Unless Christ Himself has visibly and physically returned to our planet, most likely you have heard of something to worry about in the past twenty-four hours. Whether you read this article in 2012, 2015, etc., you are also aware of war somewhere, non-Christian religious fanatics torturing and killing those that do not believe as they do, a country with a financial crisis, and the list can go on. And, it will go on, to a point.

As I write this, there is a satellite about to disintegrate and drop debris to the earth, another country is considering creating nuclear weapons, another war looks likely, at least one nation is facing a dire financial crisis, and more. That sentence is quite generic and probably fits closely to what you know no matter when you read this unless Christ has returned.

Regardless, you might be fearing some personal things common to most of us: future bills, an impending death of a loved one or friend, family disappointments and so on.

I once knew a young boy forty-two years ago that was terribly worried and nervous about a nuclear strike near his home, social unrest, rising costs, an ongoing war he might be part of, and a very uncertain future. That tyke was me when I lived in Kearny, New Jersey where, if I walked a few blocks, I could see the New York City skyline, a prime target for nuclear attack.

However, now when I hear about blended terrorist threats and that the Doomsday Clock was moved to five minutes before midnight, I have peace in my heart. What happened was I asked the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6) to live within me.

I had also asked God to forgive me of my sins. That in itself removed some fear since I figured I was not ready for anything in this life or the next after repeatedly reading The Revelation of Jesus Christ.

As He mentally healed me over the years I learned “not to cross bridges before you get to them,” much of what can be feared never happens and some of what does happen is not as bad as you had thought it might be, and a percentage of fearful reports were rumors a way to get money from people.

I was going to title this article “There Will Always Be Something To Fear,” but I soon realized that was not absolutely true. More accurate would be to add the words, “for some,” for that definitely is true.

For those that personally know God through an active relationship with Christ, the vulnerability to fear ends at physical death when we graduate into the final stages of Eternal Life. Those not surrendered to Christ have much to fear in this life and the next (Revelation 5 to 20). The only hope there is is to have one’s name written in the Lamb’s Book of Life which is done by being in, staying in, and overcoming through Christ: “Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy. He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.”-Revelation 3:4-5

Notes:

Lord willing, this article will be citrine009 in my Bible GemLight series. The planned secondary release of this devotional is to occur January 25, 2012, the forty-second anniversary of my commitment to Christ.

We’re living at a time where violence invades man’s life; many wonder if the world will end and when it will happen. With the amount of movies coming out about Armageddon people want to know how they can survive this war.

A lot of people are naïve to think things have always been
bad. I’ve heard them say there have always been wars and this is just a
continuation of life, but on a global scale it’s never been like it is now, so
when people fall into that mindset they’re making a huge mistake; their very
life depends on what they do.

We’ve gone from one government to another and we’re well
aware of the consequences, none have been able to bring the stability, peace
and security we need. When things get to the point that there seems to be no
relief in sight something has to give against the very ones that are making it
unbearable for others, and that is God’s War or Armageddon.

When the very ones who are in power can’t seem to come to an
agreement you know they can’t rule. With all of the governments that have taken
place and have not been able to solve anything you hear many people grumble
about what they’re doing; no one seems to be satisfied and the scriptures talk
about that. “When the righteous become many, the people rejoice; but when
anyone wicked bears rule, the people sigh.” Proverbs 29:2

For many years people think the earth will end by means of a
nuclear war but that’s not true. The Bible gives us the assurance that we’re at
the very brink of things ceasing and thus entering into a new world. What
better consolation than that to think things will never be like this and sooner
more than later all of us will be relieved.

Do you recognize the signs? On a global scale there are
earthquakes, pestilences, food shortages, violence, crime and immorality; life
as we know it is extremely corrupt and getting worse.

Many are also afraid of the future and think they
will not survive. The newspaper The Globe
and Mail said, “Some of the most respected thinkers about science and society
are issuing alarming prognostications about humanity coming to an end.
However, one thing that will not end is mankind and planet Earth.

The war of Armageddon as described in Revelation is a
symbolic war but when it does take place, it’s going to be literal. Armageddon will
remove all those that oppose God putting an end to human rulership. There will no longer be governments where man
elects another person only to deal with a situation they can’t solve.

Man has refused to accept Jehovah God’s sovereignty
proclaiming their own; you have presidents, kings, queens, popes and priests
that people acknowledge, but the creator of heaven and earth they frown upon
and don’t give him the credit he deserves, therefore he has a right to step in.
“To Jehovah belong the earth and that which fills it, The productive land and
those dwelling in it.” Psalms 24:1

A person buys smoke detectors to protect their house from
fire, alarms in case someone tries to break in, when it comes to Armageddon we
don’t have an exact day but the prophecies are signs headed to the culmination
when this wicked system will be wiped out, and many do wonder about it or else you wouldn’t have the amount of movies coming out about the end of the world. “Concerning that day and hour nobody knows,
neither the angels of the heavens nor the Son, but only the Father.” Matthew
24:36

Who will survive Armageddon? Not everyone, only those who
live according to God’s principles; we’re wise to act on it and recognize Jehovah God’s sovereignty
before it’s too late.

“And those slain by Jehovah will certainly come to be in
that day from one end of the earth clear to the other end of the earth. They
will not be bewailed, neither will they be gathered up or be buried. As manure
on the surface of the ground they will become.” Jeremiah 25:33

When you think of all the wars that have happened I’m sure many of you can start naming them. Maybe some were alive when earlier wars broke out or know people that can relate what happened. But what were they really like and do they have anything to do with what’s upon us?

When we turn on the news, a day never goes by without us hearing something about war; there are many people who live in war torn countries that makes it difficult for them to enjoy life, their children are in jeopardy as well as and unfortunately lack the proper medical attention and food to be able to survive.

One of the presidents of the United States who served between 1913-1921 was Woodrow Wilson, when World War I broke out he said, “I promise you that this will be the final war, the war to end all wars.”

All of us know that wasn’t true because 20 years after he made that promise, World War II broke out. This brought more death and destruction than the first, and it was true to the fact that the hope of reining in peace as stated by the president was wrong. The advances that were made resulted in vain and mankind was set on killing each other. At the end of World War II, world leaders realized that war was bigger than ever. They knew they couldn’t continue to fool themselves because what they saw before their eyes was alarming.

In 1945 General MacArthur stated, “We have had our last chance. If we do not devise some greater and more equitable system, Armageddon will be at out our door.” He knew that the atomic bombs that were dropped in the final days of World War II on Nagasaki and Hiroshima had devastated those cities. The destruction added a new meaning to the word “Armageddon.” The nuclear aftermath could possibly be the end of life on planet earth.

Image via Wikipedia

Image via Wikipedia

Image via Wikipedia

When the leaders started thinking about this by the 1960’s, they had put together a strategy of “mutually assured destruction.” They wanted to make sure they had enough missiles that would guarantee the demise of at least 25% of their enemy’s civilian population and 50% of their industrial capacity. They didn’t care who started the conflict, they were set on accomplishing it.

Ever since that happened, man has been worried about people killing each other with nuclear weapons. Nowadays almost every country has them and despite saying they’re allies, they will not give them up in case they need them to wage war against the other, leaving people to be concerned about a nuclear holocaust that could end mankind. Few have been reassured in political leaders’ strategy for world peace. It brings little comfort to know a madman has nuclear weapons at his disposal and can use it any minute.

All of us know the anguish the Japanese suffered with the Fukishima plants, they put their own lives at stake when they decided to build them and have others live in close proximity. Today many are in the same situation.

People don’t believe nuclear weapons will bring peace for mankind, if anything they’re afraid of what it can do because they know what it’s done. Since it seems that so many countries have already acquired nuclear missiles, the political systems are prepared to use them if they have to. Is this the way to finally establish peace for many that long for it, what is the definition of “Armageddon” and how will it come about? Part 2 will explain this.

The world, since the inception of human intelligence, has been through various phases of disaster and relief. All this got a new meaning when in 1947, the concept of a doomsday clock was created in order to signify the struggles of mankind against nature and also mainly against each other.

Doom. Something about that word has a finality to it. A shuddering end to what had been once thriving. To be able to signify that, to be able to picture that in the form of numbers is a difficult task. But the board of directors of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists in the University of Chicago have been doing that since 1947. They are the original creators of the Doomsday clock, an idea which encapsulates the closeness of humanity to the abyss that is mutual destruction.

It was initially created to monitor the atomic war situation. Recently, it was adopted to include climatic and technological changes that influence the life of people on Earth.

The Clock

The clock was started in 1947, during the Cold War. Its initial setting was seven minutes to midnight. The idea is that the clock is moved closer to midnight when the world changes for the worse, and moves away when the opposite happens.

The setting of the clock is not governed by any rules, and is arbitrary, decided between the board of directors of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists. Also, the clock is not changed at once to reflect current events, an example of which is the Cuban Missile Crisis. The clock was not changed through the crisis, and before it could be changed, the issue had blown over.

Changes to the clock

A graph showing the positions of the doomsday clock with respect to the year since its inception

The clock has been changed a total of 19 times since its inception, and has varied from just 2 minutes to midnight, to 17 minutes to midnight.

The clock was created with 7 minutes to midnight on its face, coinciding with the start of the Cold war. It was then changed to 3 minuted to 00:00, with the USSR testing its first atomic bomb, triggering the arms race. Then, in 1953, the clock was changed to 2 minutes to 00:00, with the USA and the USSR testing thermonuclear devices. This still remains the closest approach to midnight.

In 1960, increased awareness about nuclear devices, agreement on the 1956 Suez Crisis, meetings between Soviet and American scientists pushed the clock back by 5 minutes. 3 years later, the clock was pushed back another 5 minutes, reflecting the signing of the Partial Test Ban Treaty by the USA and the USSR.

The Vietnam War, the Indo Pakistan war of 1965, and the nuclear tests by France and China send the clock 5 minutes towards midnight, making the doomsday time 11:53 PM. But then, a series of treaties and agreements, like the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty 1 work to push the clock back by 3 and then 2 minutes.

India tested a nuclear device, The Smiling Buddha, in 1974. In addition, talks for SALT 2 stalled. These two events worked to push the clock 3 minutes towards doomsday. But after this, there was no respite for about a decade. Talks between USA and USSR stalled again, with Russia invading Afghanistan. USA withdrew from the 1980 Olympics in protest. 6 years later, Reagan became president and scraps any possibility of further arms control treaties and declares that the USA are aiming to win the Cold War. These incidents worked to push the Doomsday clock a further 2 and 3 minutes towards midnight.

Although in 1984, there was further movement with the clock moving 1 more minute towards midnight with both sides building arms, there was improvement in the position with the Intermediate Nuclear Forces Treaty, improving relations on both sides in 1988, creating a 6 minute gap. The Berlin Wall was also destroyed, and the Iron Curtain was brought down. This resulted in a further 4 minute push away from midnight.

In 1991 came the largest push towards or away, with the signing of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, making the clock 17 minutes away from midnight, which has been, to date, the earliest setting of the clock.

But this proved to be a relatively false dawn (no pun intended), with Soviet spending on military unchecked since the Cold War. This resulted in a 3 minute push towards midnight. In 1998, India and Pakistan tested nuclear missiles in a show of aggression which resulted in another 5 minute negative push.

Global nuclear disarmament fails to pick up momentum as USA decides to withdraw from the Anti Ballistic Missile treaty. There are also increased concerns on the availability of unaccounted nuclear weapons to terrorists, causing a 2 minute advance towards midnight.

Half a decade later, things do not simmer down. Iran and North Korea decide to advance their nuclear ambitions, while the scientists at the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists decide to add environmental and climatic change to the list of threats covered by the Doomsday clock.

The latest change to the clock was in 2010. Worldwide awareness of environmental concerns and climatic change causes a change which results in the final position of 6 minutes from midnight.

Final Word

The Doomsday clock has managed to accurately capture the sentiments of people and scientists all over the world. Climatic change and nuclear warfare have single handedly threatened the existence of mankind, and the Doomsday clock serves as a reminder of the struggles which have defined the danger that we have waded through to create the world as it is today, and as a warning to us to preserve the environment as it is.

Archaeological Expedition that conducted in the early 1900s, excavations near the Indian settlement Moheidzho Daro, found the ruins of the great old city, which belonged to a civilization which was one of the most advanced in the world and has been for two – three thousand years. But the main mystery metropolis, which arose before the scientists, was not in his heyday, and with death.

Researchers tried to explain why the “dead” town, pushing a variety of assumptions. But all the hypotheses were scattered like a house of cards: the ruins of buildings is not seen no sign of raging water element, and there was numerous bodies of humans and animals, as well as fragments and traces of weapons of destruction. None of the skeletons found no damage was characteristic of injury and cold steel. The obvious fact was the only one – the accident occurred suddenly and lasted for long.

Finally, an Englishman and an Italian Jace Davenport Enrico Vincenti put forward a hypothesis stunning – they stated categorically that the ancient city suffered the fate of Hiroshima and Nagasaki …! In other words, the ancient metropolis was destroyed by a nuclear explosion! It is confirmed, in particular, scattered among the ruins of pieces of clay and green glass (whole layers!). In all likelihood, sand and clay under high temperature at first melted and then solidified instantly. The same layers of green glass appear in the Nevada desert (USA) every time after a nuclear explosion.

Since the excavations at Mohenjodaro was a century. Modern analysis has shown that the fusion of fragments of the ancient city was under tremendous temperature – not less than 1500 degrees Celsius. Researchers have also identified a clearly defined area of ??the epicenter, where all the houses razed to the ground. From the center to the periphery of the fracture is gradually reduced. And another thing: it is in the area of ??Mohenjodaro found dozens of skeletons, the radioactivity which exceeded ‘normal … in 50 times!

Incidentally, in the ancient Indian epic “Mahabharata” fixed a lot of stories about the strange power of the unknown weapon, would confirm that more than a hypothesis. For example, in one chapter describes the shell, “shone like fire, but did not have smoke.” After his fall to the ground “deep darkness delayed the entire sky. Hurricanes and tornadoes rose, bearing distress and ruin. Thousands of domestic and wild animals and tens of thousands of people incinerated terrible explosion, farmers, townspeople and soldiers rushed into the waters of the river to wash away the poisonous dust … “

But this does not exhaust the mystery of ancient times in India. In the settlement Shivapur opposite the local temple are two mysterious boulder. One weighs 55 pounds, the other – 41. If, before the great stone touching fingers eleven men, and to a smaller – nine all together strictly on a certain note chorus utter the magic phrase, which is stamped on the wall of the temple, both the boulder … rise in air to a height of two meters and hang in for two seconds if there is no gravity at all!

This surprising phenomenon was recorded more than a dozen times by many scientists and researchers from Europe and Asia.

We modern people, we divide the day into 24 hours, an hour – 60 minutes, a minute – up to 60 seconds. Ancient Hindus divided the day up to 60 periods of 24 minutes duration each, and then another 60 and more. The smallest period of time, which reached up to the ancient Hindus made up one … trehsotmillionnuyu in seconds!

Effects that chemical, nuclear and biological weapons have on the humans and other living beings is devastating.

In the time when we face a real possibility of a major war it’s important that we know how to survive.

Chemical, nuclear and biological warfare survival basics:

The best protection from nuclear fall out is the earth.

In the case of nuclear attack you should hide in a cave or a shelter or just try to dig in.

If you’re in the open when the attack happens you should jump on the ground, with your face down, eyes closed and your hands under your body.

Biological and chemical attacks may be harder to notice but you will need a gas mask and protective clothing, including gloves and covers for your feet.

Your overall survival in the case of nuclear, biological and chemical attack would depend on the quality of your shelter, gas mask, protective clothes, uncontaminated supplies of water and food, your immunity and proper first aid kit.

Let us hope that we will never need to use the tips included in this article.

We need a nuclear aftermath treaty to protect us in the aftermath of a nuclear war. So far,no country has created a nuclear aftermath treaty.

Have you ever wondered what would happen to you if you were a survivor of a nuclear war? Suppose you lived in the suburbs of a large city, and an atomic bomb was dropped on the urban core of your city, destroying it. If you were still alive afterwards, what would happen to you? My proposal for a nuclear aftermath treaty includes several items that would provide a basic framework to protect people in the aftermath of a nuclear war.

1. Rent and debt amnesty. Capitalists should not be permitted to collect rent or to collect on other debts in the aftermath of a nuclear war. If the apartment building you live in is still standing after a nuclear war, you should not be required to pay rent.

2. Capitalists should be prohibited from charging excessive prices for food, water, or other commodities in the aftermath of a nuclear war. A nuclear aftermath treaty should outlaw all forms of profiteering so the surviors of a nuclear war will not be exploited.

3. The area where any nuclear explosion has occurred should be designated as the ‘blast zone’, and the blast zone should be a demilitarized zone.

4. The blast zone (also called the demilitarized zone) should not have any soldiers based in it. Military activity should be prohibited in the blast zone. This would apply to all forms of military activity, including occupation, patrols, training, and recruiting.

5. Humanitarian organizations should be permitted to operate in the blast zone. This includes medical and charitable organizations.

6. News reporters should be permitted to operate in the blast zone. This includes television reporters, and other journalists.

7. Junk yards near the blast zone should be prohibited from buying any scrap metal, unless it can be verified that the scrap metal is not radioactive. People may scavenge the ruins near a nuclear blast, and they may collect scrap metal which they may try to sell to junkyards. Because of the possibility that radioactive scrap metal may be accidentally mixed in with other metals, all junk yards and scrap yards near a nuclear blast zone should develop a means of detecting radiation, or close their operations until a means of detecting radiation can be established.

I urge diplomats around the world to work together to establish a nuclear aftermathe treaty.

Anthony Ratkov,February 22,2011.

Aflockalypse. It’s a word that people are actually using. As silly as it sounds… again, we see that in today’s society, we have to coin a cute little moniker for every damn thing… it is a legitimate incident that has scientists shaking their heads. Birds falling from the sky by the thousands. But it’s not just birds:

Scientists have tried to assign reason; fireworks in Arkansas, drunk birds elsewhere (Google it). But as the map shows, this isn’t an isolated incident.

Meanwhile, in Australia, sudden Tsunami devastated deep into the heart of the country; not on the coast, but in the interior, and now an area bigger than Texas is beneath water.

And while these are the most media driven stories, the number of natural catastrophes in our world is, in recent weeks, on a frantic pace.

Earthquakes have been shooting off like popcorn, and have become so common we barely pay attention….

And they’re pooping up in odd place; the midwest of the United States, England, Central Europe.

Epic cold weather and snow storms have ravaged the Northern Hemisphere.

So the question is this…. should we be worried? We’ve all hear the talk of 2012, apocalypse, end of the world. Are these really signs of the end? Let’s take a look.

According to the Bible, there are seven signs of the eventual apocalypse.

#1 Increase In Knowledge

Daniel 12:4

But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.

It’s kind of vague, but if you’re talking about an increase of knowledge, I’m thinking this could be a reference to the internet. No way to deny that it has, in just a few years, literally altered mankind on a fundamental level. And technology has definitely made our world a smaller place, which could reference the to and fro thing. Remember, these prophesies were written more than 2,000 years ago.

#2 Terrorism, Violence, Evil, Loss of Faith

Shouldn’t need to even explain this one. Watch the news.

#3 Tension in the Middle East

It could be said, in all fairness, that this has been the case for centuries. But things have certainly heated up recently over there.

Zechariah 12:2-3

Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem. And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.

#4 Wars of fire

There are a lot of different interpretations of this, but the most likely (assuming, for the sake of argument, that there is validity to this series of clues) seems to be a reference to nuclear war. With Kim Young Douche waving his military Phallus around over in Korea, and Bin Ladin still running rampant, it’s far from impossible.

#5 The Revival of the Roman Empire

Again, many interpretations. If there is a consensus, it’s that it will be a collection of nations, and will try to control the Middle East.

Again, watch the news.

#6 Returning of the Jews to their homeland.

Covered that about 60 years ago.

#7 Israel as a nation, Jerusalem as the capital.

Yup.

So again…. should we be worried? Hell, I don’t know. Either way, it’s interesting to observe; one thing that’s certain… the world is falling apart. The big question is how much. I guess we all just stay tuned; CNN and Fox News will no doubt keep us abreast. God help us.

As natural resources are declining, we are hoping that renewable sources of energy develop enough to meet our huge needs, but it is inevitable that we will have to rely on a new generation of nuclear power stations to help during the transitional stage. Nuclear power is very controversial, the main worry obviously is the potential tragedy that should arise if an accident occurs. As more nations seek to build their nuclear capacity, some for military purposes the risk is all too real. Here is a quick guide to the worst nuclear accidents that have happened to date.

Nuclear Power will be an essential replacement for fossil fuels when they inevitably run out in the future. Not that it’s the most desirable though, it’s just that forms of renewable energy are not advanced enough to meet the planets needs in the manner we have became accustomed too in the age of oil. So most countries are increasing their nuclear power resources if only for a temporary measure hopefully.

The process of nuclear fission carried out at nuclear power plants obviously carries some risk and just as worryingly is our apparent lack of ideas of how to get rid of the dangerous waste left over, because it remains harmful for hundreds of thousand of years, so will probably still be radioactive long after our civilisation ends.

Surprisingly and fortunately, accidents involving nuclear power process are quite rare, but the potential horrors that could be afflicted if a severe accident were to occur is enough to keep many people opposed to the idea of nuclear power, especially in their own back yard.

Here is a quick guide to the worst disasters that have happened within the nuclear power industry and the military:

1. Chernobyl , Ukraine

Chernobyl power-station located near Chernobyl in the Ukraine (part of the Soviet Union then). At least 4050 perished in a well-documented disaster that happened in April 1986 when one of the four reactors exploded. Seven Billion US dollars worth of damage was caused to property. The Soviet government were very secretive about what happened there and different estimates for the true number affected are bandied about that greatly exceed the official number. People are still dying today as a result of the radioactive fallout that forced 350,000 people to be evacuated from part of Belarus, Ukraine and Eastern Russia. Traces of the radioactive dust were found all across Europe in the months following the disaster, dispersed as it was by the weather system. Recently, the Ukraine government have announced that they will allow tourists to visit the infamous area, now deemed safe enough for short visits.

2. Mayak Nuclear Waste Storage Area, Chelyabinksi, Soviet Union

The Mayak Nuclear installation is based in the remote Ural Mountains area in Southern Russia, it is the largest nuclear complex on earth. It has a huge wastage tank depository there, still in use today, with the Russian government offering to dispose of other countries nuclear waste even today. Between 1948 and 1956, waste from the plant was just dumped into a local river which was the source for thousands of local peoples water supply. Lakes in west Siberia were also used. In total around 125,000 people were exposed to harmful levels of radiation during this reckless time. In 1957, one of the cooling towers exploded releasing radioactive particles in the air exposing around a quarter of a million people to harmful levels over an area of 15,000 square miles. Over 200 people died shortly afterwards but it is unknown how many victims there have been in the years since.

3. Windscale, United Kingdom

In 1957 a fire in a plutonium production reactor caused the first ever significant release of radioactive material from a nuclear reactor at Windscale in Cumbria, England (now known as Sellafield) killing 33 people. The reactor was originally built in 1946 to help Britain produce the material required for it’s nuclear weapon program. Several years later, the facility changed purpose to produce energy. No-one was evacuated following the fire but authorities were worried about milk produced in the area and millions of litres were destroyed to stop it getting into the system.

4. Soviet submarine K-431, Chazhma Bay, Vladivostock

10 people died and 49 suffered radiation injuries following an accident whilst the Soviet submarine K-431 was refuelling at Chazhma Bay in August 1985. A reactor in the nuclear-powered submarine exploded following a mistake whilst replacing the lid. The resulting explosion caused a fire which raged for four hours and radiation was dispersed up to six miles away. A successful clean-up operation meant that levels of radiation in the docks area was deemed normal just six months later.

6. Testing Site, Moruroa and Fangataufa (Pacific islands)

Moruroa and Fangataufa are Polynesian islands in the Pacific and French territories. When the French military were testing their nuclear weapons they chose these remote areas for that purpose and more than 80 explosions were made between 1966 and 1981. It has been suggested that the French showed little regard for the local Polynesians and taking no notice of when the wind was blowing in an unfavourable direction. Also the Polynesian islands health reporting system which prior to 1966 was released monthly detailing deaths and illnesses amongst their people suddenly ceased publishing altogether once the nuclear tests commenced. All of this continued despite widespread international outrage and Greenpeace demonstrations during the early 1970s. Various accidents also occurred, mostly due to negligence and recklessness. One explosion caused material to dislodge into the ocean that caused a tsunami across the local region, injuring seven. Between 1966 and 1981 many thousands of people have been affected by radiation, mostly local Polynesians.

7. Testing Site, Bikini Atoll, Marshall Islands (Pacific Ocean)

Bikini Atoll was captured from the Japanese by the Americans towards the end of WW2. At the end of the war, the Americans chose to use the islands as nuclear test areas, after removing the native islanders under false pretenses and telling them that they would be allowed to move back within a few months. The US military placed equipment and machinery on the island such as tanks and planes in addition to naval ships (some containing various animals to see how the blast and radiation would affect them. Twenty tests were carried out between 1946 and 1968. The most infamous test codenamed castle bravo took place in 1954 and was the largest ever test carried out by the US. The fallout from the huge blast contaminated an area of 7000 square miles affecting many more Pacific Islands. 154 islanders, 28 US personnel and 23 Japanese fisherman were victims of radiation, at least one of the fishermen died as a result. Still today the area is still classified as unsafe for habitation, despite some of the islanders returning to the island which the Americans handed back to them in 1968.

So much happened in the period, 2000 to 2010. It was quite a remarkable decade.

It is time to look back at the past decade, see how we all fared and then step into the next with the lessons of the past. Nature taught us several lessons about our helplessness in the face of natural disasters. From the Asian tsunami, where several thousands of lives were lost, to Katrina wild storms that submerged New Orleans in the US, nature never failed to confront every one of us with the grim reality that it is smarter than us. We were all made aware of the fact that the fear of nature is the beginning of wisdom.

The decade began with wars and it is about to end with more wars and conflicts. The middle east remains a cauldron it has always been. For ten years there has been no respite. Either the Hezbollas are firing rockets into Israel, the Israelis retaliating or the Palestinians are firing rockets into Israel and the Israelis are pummelling them with sulphur bombs. The Iranians threathining extermination of Jews, suicide bombers in Pakistan maiming themselves and others in the name of Allah, Afghan Tallibans bombing and killing every one in sight and the Coalition forces out to help the citicizens of these hellish nations , have become despicable chapter in the decade about to end. The decade saw war, conflicts, deaths, arson and woes. Saddam Hussein died, within the decade.

Many nations saw their capitalist leanings collapse like a pack of cards. Strange terminologies were coined in a bid to repair the mess in the financial sector. Bail had “out” added to it and it became the sing song of Europe and America. The new word became the toast of every economist and it was generously applied to solve the financial puzzle that undermined the foundations of capitalist democracies except that it did not quite help the Irish. Who knows whether the Irish were allergic to the word “bailout”

In all these uncertainties China remained untouched. The decade saw them triumph and communism seemed to say to capitalism, hey! didn,t I tell you? The decade just past had laurels for China. Not so for North Korea. This enclave remained fixed in its only past time. futher and further acquisition of arms and armaments and no efforts at feeding its people.

The decade saw a black American called Barak Oboma emerge as the President of the most powerful nation on earth. Lucky Obama , his trajectory has remained on the high side inspite of what Fox News people want us to believe. Oboma is an outstanding President, very cerebral and most accomodating.

In the developing world the decade did not witness any radical change or departure from undemocratic tendencies which have remained an albatross on their necks. In Nigeria there has been hanging in the shelf of the National Assembly one freedom of information bill, FOI, for the past decade . The legislators avoid the bill and treat it with disdain. They have rendered it stillborn and for that long corruption has remained alive and well. They know that with an FOI alive, corruption would begin to die because every Nigerian will begin to know their real earnings. In this context, Wikileaks has added pep to press freedom globally. Whether or not the leaking has gone beyond the limits of press freedom will be answered in the next decade.

The most worrisome spillovers in the new decade are , Ivory Coast elections, the no war no peace situation in the Korean peninsular, Israeli Palestinian conflicts, Afghan wars, Iranian nuclear debacle and not the least, wikileaks. A peaceful world is achievable. It is the ultimate desire of all civilized nations of the world. The next decade must be approached with hope and sincere commitment on the part of every one to usher in genuine template of building together a peaceful new world.
