Article on what happened at Pearl Harbor.

It was Sunday on December 7, 1941. The blue-green waters of Pearl Harbor on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, lay peacefully in the bright sunlight. The powerful battleships and cruisers of the U.S. Pacific Fleet floated at anchor. Headlines in the Sunday newspaper told about Japanese occupation of areas in Indochina, but no one expected trouble in Hawaii.

Suddenly, sirens wailed. Japanese torpedo planes screeched over the fleet. In a surprise attack that lasted less than two hours, about 360 Japanese aircraft pounded five battleships into useless hulks. Japanese submarines also attacked. The attacks severely damaged 13 other vessels and destroyed 188 U.S. airplanes.

The Japanese attack came as a complete surprise. People who lived in Honolulu thought at first that the smoke and noise came from make-believe war games. But when the smoke cleared, 2,280 Americans were dead, and nearly 1,200 wounded.

December 7 marked Japan’s entry into World War II on the side of Germany and Italy. On December 8, the United States declared that a state of war had existed with Japan since the attack: “Remember Pearl Harbor” became a slogan during World War II.

Those people who are unhappy with their height would benefit so much from the secrets, techniques and 650-261 strategies to growing taller naturally. Whereas there are tons of various circumstances to mention, I will focus on the most crucial ones all: how to find a proper height gain program which could cause you to be get taller. When you begin to think until this is going to please take a lots of work and become very time intensive, without a doubt that with a good program, it doesn’t should. It may not be that tough to make a real program component of your work time-to-day lifestyle. Once you know where to begin when Oahu is the best time for you to perform certain actions, it can be surprisingly easy. You will definitely desire to make time for regular exercise, though. A great height gain program will probably supply you with a a few different exercises that can lengthen your legs plus your rachis. If you undertake them regularly, you can grow your height by several inches. But that needs someone to invest time to do these exercises often. However, it really is absolutely possible to add your height gain exercises into your everyday routine. Rest room a fantastic height gain program will probably be of such form you don’t feel as if you happen to be stopping on the many fun and freedom you’ve had to date. To higher understand, allow me to share some samples of exactly what exercises you will 646-671 probably have to do: swimming, stretching, yoga, kicking, jumping, hanging and in many cases massaging. However, an excellent height gain program really should not be approximately exercises. Although they’re going to make-up a major perhaps the whole program, it requires to be enhanced while using right diet and sleep. To ensure someone to gain height, these materials are extremely connected therefore have to be component of an excellent program. Obviously, it turned out a superb program if this increased your height. Unfortunately, you’ll be aware that only afterwards and never beforehand. This is why, upon having started a selected program, I would recommend which you stick with it for a minimum of 6 weeks before drawing a conclusion. An excellent height gain program can raise your height in 6 or 8 weeks. Hence, if after 6 weeks you haven’t made any progress in any respect, than the particular program turn up useful info or just turn up useful info available for you. However, a trustworthy height gain program also has an extensive money-back guarantee. In such cases, should the program didn’t meet your needs, you’ll receive your 650-325 money back.
While you find scores of online reads about the best places to visit in Hawaii and the best trends in the Islands, no one cautions you about what to stay away from. Well, not anymore.. Here you are with the most comprehensive guide that will set the ball rolling.

Planning a quick weekend getaway to Hawaii? We wish you ‘Bon Voyage’. You will most likely find tons of material on the Internet with sightseeing, cuisine and expedition advice. However, if you are looking for what peccadilloes to avoid in the Hawaii Islands, scroll down through this extensive list of Don’ts.

1. Do not stay ignorant about the Hawaiian dialect. By all means, learn the basic Aloha (Hello and Goodbye) and Mahalo (Thank you). Do not exercise derogatory terms like ‘tita’ for women and ‘mokes’ for men. Be sure to never, ever use the word ‘WHAT’ unless you want to be severely beaten up. (It is considered rude in Hawaii.)

2. Hawaiians do not respond to North, South, East and West. The only directions in this terrain are ‘mauka’ and ‘makai’ which mean ‘toward the hills’ and ‘toward the sea’. Refrain from calling Islands other than Oahu, the ‘Outside Islands’. You can instead, say ‘Neighboring Islands’.

3. Follow Hawaiian customs and traditions. For instance, do not add sugar to ‘poi’, a rather bland dish that the locals are extremely proud of. Also, Hawaiians do not take kindly to being laughed at, especially their dance tradition, ‘the Hula’. You must not fake the ‘pidgin’ accent. If you are unaware, steer clear of imitating it incorrectly, lest you end up with a bruised face.

4. Hawaii has monster waves that tower at over fifteen to twenty foot. Unless you are a beach person and are accustomed to the waves, do not attempt to venture into the sea alone. This can be near fatal and if one does survive, the concussions are terrible.

5. Another strict no-no would be excessive sun-bathing in the nude for several reasons. Hawaiians are strictly orthodox and do not take lightly to nude foreigners on public beaches. Even on remote locations, this is considered illegal. Also, the sun can get a bit harsh and thus, avoid getting burnt.

6. The nature trails and hiking passages can be quite isolated here. Make sure you have enough fuel in your truck, abundant consumables and a pair of extra car keys lest you lose them. The mountains may seem calm and serene but getting stranded in these places after sun-down is not as exciting, we assure you.

7. Do not encroach on private property. There are a lot of private trails and beaches and the locals take the adage ‘Trespassers will be prosecuted’ quite seriously. The worst point during a vacation would be finding yourself on the other side of the law. So stay away unless you obtain due permission.

8. Do not honk your horn, unless you are sure of a collision. Hawaiian drivers find the noise very offensive and you might encounter a couple of hostile locals with their generous share of brawn, if you do not keep your noise levels low.

9. Hawaiian heritage needs to be respected by all foreigners. You must not pollute the corals, the temples and the locales at any cost. Please read all the guidelines before you visit a place of interest. In many cases, you are not even allowed to touch monuments.

We do not mean to scare you away from Hawaii and believe us, Hawaii is Paradise on Earth. However, following a few rules and knowing where to cross the line can be helpful in having the benefit of the holiday of a lifetime.

Japan's greatest blunder in World War Two was in attacking the United States, most especially with it's brilliantly executed but foolish opening maneuver...the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Although a terrifying threat to Americans of the time, the Japanese Empire’s attack at Pearl Harbor, inaugurating World War Two, was insane.

It doesn’t take much consideration to realize that when it comes to great mistakes of World War Two, the biggest blunder ever made by the Japanese was to attack the United States, especially in the manner used at Pearl Harbor.

Why did they do it?

It helps to remember that everything the Japanese Imperial forces did in the Pacific was in support of Japan’s desire to replace Western nations as a colonial power in the region.

Further, a persuasive argument can be made that nearly every action they took was in support of their war to complete the conquest of China.

China Invasion

In 1937, the Japanese military, without consulting the civil administration in Tokyo, invaded China with spurious allegations that they were attacked first. They’d had Korea since 1910, and at that point had already held Manchuria since 1931. Manchuria was, in fact, their springboard for attack. But despite their power and years of losses, they were never able to completely absorb the entire country.

When they attacked the United States, it was in support of operations planned against Malaya and the Dutch East Indies where they sought a source of oil and other strategic supplies to continue their war in China. The Japanese thought the United States might go to war over the expansion so the Pearl Harbor attack was intended to forstall that.

Short Term Goals

It was insanity. Japan had no stockpile of critical supplies and their military experience they had was based on their war in China against a very divided people.

Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto reluctantly drew up his plan for the attack, well aware that the Japanese leadership didn’t appreciate American strengths.

Knock-Out Blow

Yamamoto knew the only chance was to strike a blow so massive that the Americans would seek peace. Japanese planners were heavily influenced by their war with the Russians in the earliest years of the 20th century when Japan achieved its goals through negotiations following a similar military victory gained through sneak attack.

They thought the United States could be forced into a similar negotiated back-down. They were partially motivatwed by a belief in their own propaganda about Western decadence and weakness. If you’ve seen the movie Midway, you may recall the Japanese officers on the ships’ bridge watching the doomed American air attacks on their fleet, quietly comparing the Yankee pilots sacrifice to that of samurai.

Negotiated Victory

Even after Pearl Harbor the attitude of negotiated victory persisted, ending at Midway. Under consideration after Pearl Harbor was a thrust into the Indian Ocean and an attack on Russia.

The third option targeting Midway won selection, partially in response to the stinging air attacks of the Doolittle raiders on the Japanese homeland, emphasizing their vulnerability from the east.

With the smashing defeat at Midway, the Japanese abruptly lost their momentum. With minor exceptions, the Japanese immediately reverted to a defensive posture they retained for the rest of the war. The invasion at Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands where a Japanese airbase was being built that would interrupt the supply line from the United States to Australia, marked the actual beginning of the reversal.

The Greatest Blunder

Much has been made of the intention of the Japanese consul to hand over to the US government before the Pearl Harbor attack began a document that formally ended relations with the US — not a declaration of war although tantamont to that. The document was delayed by a typist’s lack of skill until after the attack had begun.

Despite the attention that failure has received, it is difficult to imagine a half hour jump on the attack would really have made any difference in the public’s feelings of criminal betrayal to the sneak attack.

Ronin

The Japanese regarded the attack from an alien viewpoint. It reflected the ideals of their legends of the 47 ronin (freelance samurai) who avenged the murder of the lord to whom they owed allegiance through a crafty plan. The plan required they lay low, even to the point of becoming the town drunk, to allay suspicions until the moment to strike when they killed the lord who had ordered the hit. After that, they gathered around their victim in a circle and committed sepuku, ritual suicide, in atonement for their failure to protect their lord. Just prior to the war, a movie called The 47 Ronin was a propaganda hit in Japan, spelling out the values of loyalty, duty, honor, and sacrifice that the militarists promoted in their adoption of the bushido code of conduct.

The sneak attack on Pearl Harbor was not unlike the strategy used by the 47 Ronin, one they’d used with success in securing their goals in the war with Russia.

Strike from Desperation

At the time of Pearl Harbor, the Japanese were operating with only a few months oil supplies left. The US had earlier that year cut off its oil exports to Japan, the last of the exports to be banned, including aircraft, aviation parts, and even scrap metal for weapons manufacture.

The Japanese aircraft replacement rate was very slow, even without the pressure of a world war. They had a good navy but not one big enough to take on a fully mobilized United States. The Japanese would

ultimately be equipped with 30 aircraft carriers. several of them actually only under construction while the US would at its peak be turning out one of those a week.

To say the odds against success were long is a mind-sizzling understatement. The Japanese at least knew that in the long run they could not win, but they were unwilling to change their course, and were pressured to strike out of desperation and calculation and faith in deliverance.

No Knock-Out Blow

Without a knock-out blow at Pearl Harbor, Japan was doomed from the beginning of the war. Yamamoto said it himself. He observed that he would be able to do what he wanted for six months, but after that he couldn’t predict. And that’s pretty much how it played out.

The sneak attack on Pearl Harbor at 7:55am, Sunday, December 7, 1941, did what no one in the United States was able to do. It united the American people, even the anti-war isolationists, in what became not a war but a crusade against the Japanese, ending at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Furloughs in Hawaii have been the cause of much controversy. Just thought I'd offer up my two cents on it as a high school student.

Seventeen days. Seventeen. It could represent many things, seventeen elephants, seventeen donkeys, seventeen lollipops, or even seventeen chocolate chip cookies (yumm). But, in Hawaii seventeen seems to represent something greater. Something that many people are passionate about. Seventeen furlough days. Seventeen days of no public school education. Seventeen days lost. We’ve gone through two furloughs day so far, and already, there are efforts to put an end to those days. I however, as a student, do not think that it impacts us as much as some claim these days actually do. I have no problem with these furloughs (and that’s not because I just don’t want to go to school). I do believe that it matters whether or not our students are prepared and willing to learn. In fact, they are necessary for our state.

Let’s look at some background first, in order to put all this into context (oh so important context). On October 23, 2009, the first of these furloughs began. No longer is it “Aloha Friday,” it is now “Furlough Friday.” Hawaii’s public school teachers and 170,000 students were forced to take seventeen fridays off throughout the whole year. This has given Hawaii students the shortest school year in the nation. All of this, because of a nearly 1 billion dollar budget deficit in our state. In an attempt to patch up the leaky faucet, a 7.9% pay cut and these furlough days was proposed by the governor. It was ratified by teachers. This has ignited a flurry of protest from concerned parents, teachers, and even students. But, the fact is, that it as necessary. Everyone has been hit hard by the recession. Everyone from regular families such as mine to the big monolithic, overbearing government. Not doing these furloughs would have pulled our state further into the pit.

Along with these protest, there have a been a number of proposed alternatives to these furloughs. There have been ideas to take funds from other areas, to extended school hours, and taking less waiver or planning and collaboration days (which is probably an excellent idea seeing as we have a ton of these). There have even been lawsuits filed against furloughs. Quite hilariously, in a discussion in class about furloughs, our ultra left-wing teacher (pardon me for saying that) suggested to the class that the government should’ve “taken away money from the garbage men.” And being the amazing brain-washer that he is, the whole class agreed. That’s accounted for by our gullibility, I would guess. But, on the more serious side, I do firmly believe if the public outcry is loud enough and a feasible solution was proposed, these furloughs will go away. However, somewhere else is going to have to take the hit eventually.

As for the actual impacts on learning of these furloughs, I myself do not seeing that as being too much of a problem. I myself, as a student find my teachers rather than stagnating and doing nothing about this, increasing the pace at which class goes as well as the work load. I feel as if I still learn a substantial amount in all of my classes and that if there were no furloughs at all we’d still be learning the exact same things. The important thing is preparation. You have to go into your classes with the mindset of learning something and not goofing off. So many of my friends and classmates around me LOVE the furloughs simply for the fact that they don’t have to go to school. And yet, they still go into classes with the intent to learn (myself included). Surprisingly, others HATE the furloughs, as they do believe that they’d get a lower education. Yet, these people are the same people who consistently slack off in class and tend to goof off. Some even attended a protest against the furloughs, but can’t attend an after-school study session. These are the kids that would most likely be affected by the furloughs. One upside of the furloughs is that they make all of our students all that more determined to do better in school and work harder. However, as a collective whole you shouldn’t have to worry about kids learning any less than they would otherwise, whether it be a lot or more. However, it is true that we as a state, do rank extremely low in the national standings, but where we’re concerned, our students will not be learning any more or any less. Added work and nudging from our teachers as well as the (newly created) open-mindedness of our students to learn, especially now with the furloughs will make sure of that.

In conclusion, while some people may protest the furloughs, nothing will happen until either the lawmakers step in to do anything, spurred on the by the public, or if lawsuits stop the furloughs by declaring them unlawful. In the meantime, we’ve gone through two furloughs so far, and I don’t think much has been affected. Furloughs tomorrow, followed by a slew of holidays, and planning and collaboration days, resulting in a three day weekend and a three day weekday (at the time of this article). How enlightening… In the meantime, I’d like a quarter cup of math supplements mixed with some fresh english boosters, thank you very much. On the serious side however, our education isn’t going anywhere as long as we’re going to fight for and work hard for it. The question is where will the future take us, as the furloughs are slated for two years. One can only hope.

Do you believe in ghosts and spirits?
You might after you learn of the Hawaiian Night Marchers legend and this real experience will certainly provoke better understanding of what lies behind and ahead of us in this realm we call life.

Having just moved into a new apartment building, I was enjoying my new home office area and cleaning up a few graphic designs for clients. Having had enough of the eye strain, I leaned back and spun around in my leather chair hoping to gaze out the window and take a bit of a break. At that time, I had a newer Persian kitten named “Fatso” because he had such thick fluffy white fur. He was gorgeous and had finally been able to come to an understanding with the two others, Princess and Tommy.

Persian cats are known to be territorial and Fatso had just grown large enough to command their respect which he did by a famous choke hold during a rather loud cat fight which might have been the equivalent of a feline initiation -depending on which term you prefer.

As I gazed out the window, I saw some rather peculiar entities in what appeared to be a procession down the embankment across the narrow side street called Magazine Street. What was so bizarre is that these images were dressed in garb which resembled an ancient hula show complete with some black markings across the face between the eyes and cheek bone area. Each carried a flaming stick which varied in length from one to another. However, I tend to think they could be grouped as both long and short tiki torches. I immediately leaped from my seat to move closer to the window to peer at the curious display, knocking Fatso to the floor in my haste.

A brazen group, they were staring blankly at me as I looked upon them with both fear and curiosity. Several of the figures kneeled on one knee – those with the longer torches remained standing. Incredibly frightened I opted to run out of the office environment down a rather long corridor to the bedroom wing for a better look. Obviously, this was one time in life when I could not believe my own eyes. Even odder than the office view provided, these Hawaiians from ancient days were looking at me still and I don’t think their heads ever moved an inch. What was most curious is the images appeared to me as any other person would if I were looking thru the flames of a campfire to the other side of the marshmallow circle. Not the standard human stereotype, “in-the-flesh” but then again, didn’t seem to be the “boys next door”.

Fearing the worse, not to mention scared to death, I jumped into my bed and pulled the covers over my head. After what seemed like an hour, although only a few minutes, I peeked out from the covers and they were still staring at me but now they were joined by females in similar dress. After that, I never had the nerve to come out from hiding beneath the comforter. In what is even sadder, exactly ten days following this event, my precious “Fatso” dropped dead either exactly where I landed when I leaped from my office chair or within just inches. Fearing poison or some other harm had caused this kitten to die -realizing he was not sick a single moment or day- I had an autopsy performed on his body. Much to my surprise, there was no finding of any cause of death.

Obviously, I had forgotten about the images I had seen and was particularly sad about losing my baby so I opted to lose myself in a book. What I read was amazing. The following day, I consulted with an older Hawaiian gentleman and he confirmed my suspicions linked to the story in the book of the “Night Marchers”. While I will not go into lengthy detail, I advise anyone curious about my experience to read about “Hawaiian Legends and the Night Marchers .

Here is what he told me:

Being of Cherokee descent likely was the only saving grace I had that evening and he suggested if not for this I would be dead because I am “Haole” which translated Hawaiian to English means “white”. Legend has it anyone who dares look upon Hawaiian Royalty and not being of Royal Blood would die shortly thereafter.

I had not put together the death of Fatso until some time later so I never confirmed with the Hawaiian gentleman due to his own passing but I really believe either this kitten offered his life for mine, or he died because he too was considered “Haole” being that he was a white cat.

I am a native of Tennessee and born of Cherokee descent. Although I did not know this at the time of my experience, the Hawaiian Monarchy and Cherokee Nation leaders were great friends. In fact, the Queen of Hawaii welcomed the Cherokee leaders with open arms when they accepted an invitation to visit. It seems the plight of each group shared a common thread of oppression by the United States government. It is an interesting footnote in history that historians recognize only the Hawaiians and Cherokee Nation as true American Royalty in the United States of America. Perhaps this explains why I was spared and the reason the kitten dropped dead?

Sometimes fact is really stranger than fiction, I am not by any stretch of the imagination a creative fiction writer and this one folks is 100% true.
