An American poet and soldier Joyce Kilmer wrote a poem entitled “Trees” sometime in 1914. It was his most popular poem which was included in his collection “Trees and other poems (1914)”. Joyce Kilmer was born on December 6, 1886 in New Brunswick, New Jersey. When the United States declared war against Germany in the Second World War in 1917 Kilmer enlisted in the Seventh Regiment in New York National Guard. He died from a sniper bullet in France in July 30, 1918 at a young age of 31. Below is Joyce Kilmer’s poem “Trees”.

“I think that I shall never see

A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest

                                            Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,

                                            And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in Summer wear

                                            A nest of robins in her hair;

                                            Upon whose bosom snow has lain;

                                             Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,

But only God can make a tree.”

The tree is one of God’s most beautiful creations. The greens that we see in our surroundings are sign of life. Trees and other plants sustain life, and without them no life can exist on earth. Trees and plant need water, sunlight and carbon dioxide in order to survive. The plants harness the energy of the sunlight to turn water and carbon dioxide into glucose, its food. That process is called photosynthesis on which a waste product called oxygen is created. The plants and trees play an important role for our survival by absorbing carbon dioxide, the waste gas, and giving us oxygen, the fresh air that we breathe.

The earth at present is experiencing a phenomenon called global warming. It is caused by the accumulation of greenhouse gases such as water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and ozone in the atmosphere. Solar radiation penetrates the earth. Some amount of the re-radiated heat escapes into space while remaining re-radiated heat is reflected back to earth. If there is too much accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, there is less re-radiated heat that escapes into the atmosphere and more amount of re-radiated heat is reflected back to earth which causes its surface temperature to rise. As a result there is a change in climate, and the weather pattern is altered which will result in coastal flooding and more frequent and severe storms.

Some of the significant causes of global warming are the excessive use of fossil fuel and deforestation. These activities added so much greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Global warming or its effect could have been averted or minimized had man not destroyed much of the earth’s forest cover. Lesser trees and plants and too much dependence of fossil fuel means more carbon dioxide that will accumulate as greenhouse gas in the atmosphere.

At present there is less remaining forest cover on earth. Areas devastated by typhoons and flashfloods are usually places where trees in the nearby forests and mountains are destroyed. Trees prevent flashflood by absorbing rain water into the soil and prevent soil erosion that causes siltation in the river. Deforestation also destroys the ecosystem and as a result of it some plants and animals die and others will eventually become extinct.

People can make amazing inventions and make their city become economically prosperous. But if they do not take care for the environment and protect and preserve what God has given them like the trees in the forest, then they are bound to experience bad things to happen like climate change and other destructive phenomena.

Explanation to why we yawn.

THE TRUTH IS that nobody completely understands why people, or even animals for that matter, yawn.

It is assumed that we yawn out of boredom or because we are tired. However, there isn’t really any evidence to suggest these beliefs.

Scientists are no where close to knowing all of the biological mechanisms attributed to the yawn, but they all usually tend to agree that yawning is an involuntary respiratory reflex, which serves to regulate the carbon-dioxide and oxygen levels in our blood.

A yawn is technically the reflex opening of the mouth which is then followed by the deep inhalation and then the slow exhalation of oxygen.

The act of yawning is but one of a large number of involuntary reflexes that are controlled by the spinal and nerve centers.

Scientists theorize that the onrush of a yawn is sparked either by exhaustion and fatigue, or by sheer boredom as, at those very times, breathing is usually flat and shallow, and little oxygen is being carried to the lungs by the cardiovascular system.

Whenever one yawns, his/her attentiveness is increased, the sudden intake of oxygen increases the pulse rate, gets rid of carbon dioxide buildup in the bloodstream, and forces the oxygen through blood vessels located in the brain, all this while restoring normal breathing as well as ventilating the lungs.

This is a quite reasonable theory about yawning, but it falls short of explaining many aspects about yawning. Scientists explain away the “contagious” nature of yawning, that is when one person’s yawn incites another person nearby to yawn, is most likely due to the power of suggestion, but scientists are at a loss when attempting to explain why it is that yawning occurs excessively in patients that have lower brain stem damage or patients with multiple sclerosis.

Other mysteries puzzling scientist’s include why individuals with substantial concentrations of oxygen in their blood streams yawn and why it is that unborn fetuses still in the womb yawn, when it’s a clearly well-known fact that fetuses do not intake oxygen into their lungs until after their birth.

Until all of the questions mentioned above are answered, you’d be best not to assume that a person who is yawning in your presence is simply bored silly with what it is that you are saying, or suffers from exhaustion. It is best to simply be pleased that he/she is not bored to death.

Oxygen helps to drain the blood throughout the body.

This will keep your organs to stay alive. Optimize the use of oxygen is not only logical, it can also make you reach orgasm.

How to optimize the oxygen in the breathing techniques. This technique is often referred to as “sexual yoga”, because this technique is to educate the region’s femininity. Here are some types of breathing techniques are useful for your sex life, as cited in health.

Shortness of breath, fast and rhythmic, with a nose for 1-3 minutes will increase your sexual desire, especially if you have difficulty having an orgasm. You can do this exercise before or during sex.

The second way is slightly different, but the benefits as the first. This method can be done before making love.

First you have to do is lie on your back with knees bent and legs wide enough. Begin to breathe deeply until you feel the film is expanding. Imagine all the air power brings to the genitals. When you breathe out, to throw as to remove all the oxygen in the body.

After a few deep breaths, breathing fast with abdominal breathing and mouth open. Make as much as 10 to 20 times, then return to breathe a deep breath through your nose and throw it out the mouth. In this way, you will feel increased libido.

After doing some deep breaths, breathe rapidly with abdominal breathing and with the mouth open. Do as much as 10 to 20 times, then breathe in again with a deep breath through your nose and throw it through the mouth. That way, you will feel increased sex drive.

Trees and other plants sustain life on earth. Without them no life can ever exist.

The occurrence of global warming brings about such phenomena as floods, rise of sea level, drought, extinction of some plants and animal species and the disappearance of coral reefs. Some people blame it on deforestation. However, destruction of trees is not the only cause of global warming. There are other causes too such as too much use of fossil fuel to run vehicles and factories, methane emission from animals, and agricultural and other activities. These activities cause greenhouse gasses of being trapped in the atmosphere instead of going into space. This situation results in the heating of earth’s surface.

We need to regulate activities that are harmful to the earth’s capability to sustain life. And we need to come up with solutions too. In this article I would like to limit my discussion to tree planting. Plants and trees are important to our existence. But over the past centuries man has destroyed so much forest covers so that this action has contributed to detrimental effects on the environment such as climate change. It is difficult to restore the world’s destroyed rainforests to their original state as a result of logging, urban, industrial and agricultural developments and construction of government infrastructure projects. We can make up for the lost of our vast rainforest by reforestation or the planting of trees. By doing so, we can mitigate the ill effects of global warming. Other lasting or long-term benefits of tree planting are as follows:

Trees absorb waste gasses and give us fresh air. To sustain their life, trees and plants undergo a process called photosynthesis on which they use sunlight, water and carbon dioxide to produce glucose which is their food. In this food production process the plants release their waste product which is oxygen, the air that we breath. Without photosynthesis life in this earth will not exist. Through photosynthesis trees and plants maintain the ideal balance of carbon dioxide and oxygen in the air. Too much or too little of either is harmful to us. Fewer trees mean that there will be excess carbon dioxide that will be emitted into the atmosphere which will contribute to global warming.

Trees enrich the ecosystems in our environment and promote biodiversity. When there are trees they become the habitat of birds, insects and other animals that feed on their leaves, flowers and fruits; and smaller plants co-exist with trees. Thus an ecosystem is developed. Plants, animals and humans need each other in order to survive. If the earth were to lose all of its forest covers, most plants and animals would become extinct.

Trees help prevent floods and soil erosion. During rain some of the raindrops are collected on the leaves so that some amount of water does not fall on the ground. Later these raindrops are evaporated into the air. Leaves also serve as cushion to lighten the impact of water that is falling on the ground, and this prevents soil erosion. In addition, the roots of the trees absorb some water in the ground during rain thus reducing the amount of water on the ground surface. Roots of trees also hold soil so that it is not easily eroded during rain and cause landslides. Lack of trees causes soil to be washed away into the water course causing sediments to be deposited in low lying channels which overflow during heavy rains.

Trees help provide us clean water. The roots of the trees absorb rain water thus storing supply of fresh and clean ground water. In addition the ability of the roots to hold soil prevents soil erosion which causes sediments to accumulate in the water channels. Sediments carried by rainwater pollute rivers or creeks. Trees therefore help make the water in the rivers clear and clean.

Trees beautify our environment and boost our wellbeing. Garbage in our backyard and in the landfills is eyesore. On the other hand the view of plants and trees is aesthetically pleasant. The sight of green surrounding somehow protects us from the glare of sunlight. Green surrounding is associated with life. The sight of trees and other plants at our house together with the birds and insects that hang around them makes our surroundings lively and beautiful. Trees provide shade for us and moderate the heat of the sun in summer.

We know the benefits that trees give us. The right time to plant them is now. We can do it in our own backyard or along the city streets or in wildlife conservation area. Planting trees in a wide area requires coordinated effort with non-government organization, government agencies and civic groups. We need trees and plant for our survival and for the protection of our mother earth.

MYTH
The science of worldwide warming is just too unsure to act on.
FACT
There is no discussion among scientists concerning the fundamental facts of worldwide warming.

The most revered scientific bodies have stated unequivocally that international warming is happening, and folks are inflicting it by burning fossil fuels (like coal, oil and natural gas) and scaling down forests. The U.S. National Academy of Sciences, that in 2005 the White House ”the scientific understanding of climate modification is currently sufficiently clear to justify nations taking prompt action. it’s important that each one nations determine cost-effective steps that they’ll take currently, to contribute to substantial and long-term reduction in internet international greenhouse gas emissions.” (Joint Statement of Science Academies: international Response to Climate modification [PDF], 2005)

The only discussion within the science community concerning international warming is concerning what quantity and the way quick warming can continue as a results of heat-trapping emissions. Scientists have given a transparent warning concerning international warming, and that we have quite enough facts — concerning causes and fixes — to implement solutions right away.

MYTH

Even if international warming may be a downside, addressing it’ll hurt yank trade and employees.

FACT

A elegant trading program can harness yank ingenuity to decrease heat-trapping pollution cost-effectively, jumpstarting a brand new carbon economy.

Claims that fighting international warming can cripple the economy and value many thousands of jobs are unfounded. In fact, firms that are already reducing their heat-trapping emissions have discovered that cutting pollution will save cash. the value of a comprehensive national greenhouse gas reduction program can rely on the precise emissions targets, the timing for the reductions and also the suggests that of implementation. An freelance MIT study found that a modest cap-and-trade system would value but $20 per household annually and don’t have any negative impact on employment.

Experience has shown that properly designed emissions trading programs will scale back compliance prices considerably compared with different regulatory approaches. as an example, the U.S. acid rain program reduced sulfur dioxide emissions by quite thirty p.c from 1990 levels and value trade a fraction of what the govt originally estimated, in step with EPA. Furthermore, a compulsory cap on emissions may spur technological innovation that might produce jobs and wealth. Letting international warming continue till we tend to are forced to handle it on an emergency basis may disrupt and severely injury our economy. it’s way wiser and less expensive to act currently.

MYTH

Water vapor is that the most significant, abundant greenhouse gas. therefore if we’re getting to management a greenhouse gas, why don’t we tend to management it rather than carbon dioxide (CO2)?

FACT

Although water vapor traps additional heat than CO2, owing to the relationships among CO2, water vapor and climate, to fight international warming nations should specialise in controlling CO2.

Atmospheric levels of CO2 are determined by what quantity coal, natural gas and oil we tend to burn and the way several trees we tend to bog down, further as by natural processes like plant growth. Atmospheric levels of water vapor, on the opposite hand, can’t be directly controlled by people; rather, they’re determined by temperatures. the hotter the atmosphere, the additional water vapor it will hold. As a result, water vapor is an element of an amplifying impact. Greenhouse gases like CO2 heat the air, that in flip adds to the stock of water vapor, that in flip traps additional heat and accelerates warming. Scientists apprehend this owing to satellite measurements documenting an increase in water vapor concentrations because the globe has warmed.

The best thanks to lower temperature and therefore scale back water vapor levels is to scale back CO2 emissions.

MYTH

Global warming and additional CO2 can truly be helpful — they scale back cold-related deaths and stimulate crop growth.

FACT

Any helpful effects are way outweighed by injury and disruption.

Even a warming in only the center vary of scientific projections would have devastating impacts on several sectors of the economy. Rising seas would inundate coastal communities, contaminate water provides with salt and increase the chance of flooding by storm surge, affecting tens of numerous individuals globally. Moreover, extreme weather events, together with heat waves, droughts and floods, are predicted to extend in frequency and intensity, inflicting loss of lives and property and throwing agriculture into turmoil.

Even though higher levels of CO2 will act as a plant fertilizer beneath some conditions, scientists currently assume that the “CO2 fertilization” impact on crops has been overstated; in natural ecosystems, the fertilization impact will diminish when a number of years as plants acclimate. Furthermore, increased CO2 might profit undesirable, weedy species quite fascinating species.

Higher levels of CO2 have already caused ocean acidification, and scientists are warning of probably devastating effects on marine life and fisheries. Moreover, higher levels of regional ozone (smog), a results of hotter temperatures, may worsen respiratory diseases. Less developed countries and natural ecosystems might not have the capability to adapt.

The notion that there’ll be regional “winners” and “losers” in international warming is predicated on a world-view from the 1950’s. we tend to live during a international community. Never mind the ethical implications — when an environmental catastrophe creates numerous refugees half-way round the world, Americans are affected.

MYTH

Global warming is simply a part of a natural cycle. The Arctic has warmed up within the past.

FACT

The global warming we tend to are experiencing isn’t natural. individuals are inflicting it.

People are inflicting international warming by burning fossil fuels (like oil, coal and natural gas) and scaling down forests. Scientists have shown that these activities are pumping much more CO2 into the atmosphere than was ever released in many thousands of years. This buildup of CO2 is that the biggest reason behind international warming. Since 1895, scientists have known that CO2 and different greenhouse gases entice heat and heat the planet. because the warming has intensified over the past 3 decades, scientific scrutiny has increased along side it. Scientists have thought-about and dominated out different, natural explanations like daylight, volcanic eruptions and cosmic rays. (IPCC 2001)

Though natural amounts of CO2 have varied from one hundred eighty to three hundred components per million (ppm), today’s CO2 levels are around 380 ppm. that is twenty fifth quite the very best natural levels over the past 650,000 years. Increased CO2 levels have contributed to periods of upper average temperatures throughout that long record. (Boden, Carbon Dioxide info Analysis Center)

As for previous Arctic warming, it’s true that there have been stretches of heat periods over the Arctic earlier within the twentieth century. The restricted records out there for that point amount indicate that heat|the heat} failed to have an effect on as several areas or persist from year to year the maximum amount because the current warmth. however that episode, but heat it had been, isn’t relevant to the problem at hand. Why? For one, a short regional trend doesn’t discount a extended international phenomenon.

We know that the earth has been warming over the past many decades and Arctic ice has been melting persistently. and in contrast to the sooner periods of Arctic heat, there’s no expectation that the present upward trend in Arctic temperatures can reverse; the rising concentrations of greenhouse gases can forestall that from happening.

MYTH

We can adapt to climate modification — civilization has survived droughts and temperature shifts before.

FACT

Although humans as a full have survived the vagaries of drought, stretches of heat and cold and additional, entire societies have collapsed from dramatic climatic shifts.

The current warming of our climate can bring major hardships and economic dislocations — untold human suffering, particularly for our kids and grandchildren. we tend to are already seeing vital prices from today’s international warming that is caused by greenhouse gas pollution. Climate has modified within the past and human societies have survived, however nowadays six billion individuals rely on interconnected ecosystems and complicated technological infrastructure.

What’s additional, unless we tend to limit the quantity of heat-trapping gases we tend to are putting into the atmosphere, we’ll face a warming trend unseen since human civilization began ten,000 years ago. (IPCC 2001)

The consequences of continued warming at current rates are probably to be dire. several densely populated areas, like low-lying coastal regions, are highly liable to climate shifts. A middle-of-the-range projection is that the homes of thirteen to eighty eight million individuals round the world would be flooded by the ocean every year within the 2080s. Poorer countries and little island nations can have the toughest time adapting. (McLean et al. 2001)

In what seems to be the primary forced move ensuing from climate modification, one hundred residents of Tegua island within the Pacific Ocean were evacuated by the govt as a result of rising ocean levels were flooding their island. Some 2,000 different islanders arrange the same move to flee rising waters. within the us, the village of Shishmaref in Alaska, that has been inhabited for four hundred years, is collapsing from melting permafrost. Relocation plans are within the works.

Scarcity of water and food may lead to major conflicts with broad ripple effects throughout the world. even though individuals notice some way to adapt, the wildlife and plants on that we rely could also be unable to adapt to speedy climate modification. whereas the planet itself won’t finish, the planet as we all know it’s going to disappear.

MYTH

Recent cold winters and funky summers don’t feel like international warming to me.

FACT

While totally different pockets of the country have experienced some cold winters here and there, the general trend is hotter winters.

Measurements show that over the last century the Earth’s climate has warmed overall, in all seasons, and in most regions. Climate skeptics mislead the general public after they claim that the winter of 2003–2004 was the coldest ever within the northeastern us. That winter was solely the thirty third coldest within the region since records began in 1896. Furthermore, one year of cold weather in one region of the world isn’t a sign of a trend within the international climate, that refers to a long-term average over the whole planet.

MYTH

Global warming can’t be happening as a result of some glaciers and ice sheets are growing, not shrinking.

FACT

In most components of the planet, the retreat of glaciers has been dramatic. the simplest out there scientific information indicate that Greenland’s huge ice sheet is shrinking.

Between 1961 and 1997, the world’s glaciers lost 890 cubic miles of ice. The consensus among scientists is that rising air temperatures are the foremost necessary issue behind the retreat of glaciers on a world scale over long-standing periods. Some glaciers in western Norway, Iceland and New Zealand are expanding throughout the past few decades. That enlargement may be a results of regional will increase in storm frequency and snowfall instead of colder temperatures — not the least bit incompatible with a world warming trend.

In Greenland, a NASA satellite which will live the ice mass over the complete continent has found that though there’s variation from month to month, over the long run, the ice is disappearing. In fact, there are worrisome signs that melting is accelerating: glaciers are stepping into the ocean twice as quick as a decade ago, and, over time, additional and additional glaciers have began to accelerate. what’s most alarming is that the prediction, primarily based on model calculations and historical proof, that an approximately five.4 degree Fahrenheit increase in native Greenland temperatures can cause irreversible meltdown and a sea-level rise of over twenty feet. Since the Arctic is warming 2-3 times faster than the world average, this tipping purpose isn’t isolated.

The solely study that has shown increasing ice mass in Greenland only checked out the inside of the ice sheet, not at the sides where melting happens. this is often truly in line with climate model predictions that international warming would cause a short-term accumulation of ice within the cold interior attributable to heavier snowfall. (Similarly, scientists have predicted that Antarctica overall can gain ice within the close to future attributable to heavier snowfall.) The scientists who revealed the study were careful to entails that their results shouldn’t be used to conclude that Greenland’s ice mass as a full is growing. additionally, their information advised that the buildup of snow within the middle of the continent is probably going to decrease over time as international warming continues.

MYTH

Accurate weather predictions a number of days beforehand are onerous to come back by. Why on earth ought to we’ve got confidence in climate projections decades from now?

FACT

Climate prediction is essentially totally different from weather prediction, simply as climate is totally different from weather.

It is typically tougher to create an correct weather forecast than a climate prediction. The accuracy of weather forecasting is critically dependent upon having the ability to precisely and comprehensively characterize this state of the world atmosphere. Climate prediction depends on different, longer ranging factors. for example, we’d not apprehend if it’ll be below freezing on a selected December day in New England, however we all know from our understanding of the region’s climate that the temperatures throughout the month can typically be low. Similarly, climate tells us that Seattle and London tend to be rainy, Florida and southern California are typically heat, and also the Southwest is commonly dry and hot.

Today’s climate models will currently reproduce the observed international average climates over the past century and beyond. Such findings have bolstered scientist’s confidence within the capability of models to provide reliable projections of future climate. Current climate assessments generally think about the results from {a vary|a variety|a spread} of models and situations for future heat-trapping emissions so as to spot the foremost probably range for future climatic modification.

MYTH

As the ozone hole shrinks, international warming can now not be a drag.

FACT

Global warming and also the ozone hole are 2 totally different issues.

The ozone hole may be a thinning of the stratosphere’s ozone layer, that is roughly nine to thirty one miles higher than the earth’s surface. The depletion of the ozone is attributable to man-made chemicals like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). A thinner ozone layer lets additional harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation to succeed in the earth’s surface.

Global warming, on the opposite hand, is that the increase within the earth’s average temperature attributable to the buildup of CO2 and different greenhouse gases within the atmosphere from human activities.

This article explains the symptoms, causes, diagnosis and treatment for carbon monoxide poisoning which happens if you breathe in carbon monoxide gas. Crabon monoxide gas is created by fuel not burning properly.

Carbon monoxide (CO) gas is created by the incomplete burning of fuel. It is a poisonous gas and breathing in just a small amount can cause loss of consciousness and death. More than 50 people in the UK die from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning each year and over 200 people are injured seriously.

Carbon monoxide has no smell, taste or colour. This makes it hard to detect and also means that it is easy to inhale without realising you are doing so.

Carbon monoxide is made when fuels such as oil, gas, wood and coal fail to burn fully. The oxygen in the room is gradually used up and replaced with carbon dioxide when a fire burns in an enclosed room. After a build-up of carbon dioxide in the air, the fuel is stopped from fully burning and it begins to release carbon monoxide.

Symptoms of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
The most common symptom of carbon monoxide poisoning is a headache. Other common symptoms are:

nausea and dizziness
tiredness and confusion
stomach pain and being sick
difficulty breathing and shortness of breath

The symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning can be similar to those of flu and food poisoning. However, it does not cause a fever, unlike flu.

You might notice that your symptoms are not as bad at times when you are away from the source of the carbon monoxide.

Your symptoms will get worse the longer your breathe in carbon monoxide gas. You might lose your vision, balance and memory and eventually you may lose consciousness. If there is a lot of carbon monoxide in the air, this can happen within two hours. However, sometimes the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning can happen a number of days or even months after breathing in the carbon monoxide.

The symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning which develop later include:

memory loss
confusion
c-ordination problems

The symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning can be a lot more severe if you have breathed in high levels of carbon monoxide and can include:

vertigo – the sensation that you or the environment around you, are spinning
intoxication – the effects of poisoning, e.g. an impaired mental state and changes to personality
breathlessness and tachycardia – a heart rate or over 100 beats a minute
ataxia – a loss of physical co-ordination caused by underlying damage to the nervous system and brain
chest pain due to heart attack or angina
seizures- muscle twitches, tongue biting and total body shaking caused by an uncontrollable burst of electrical activity in the brain
loss of consciousness – death may occur within a few minutes in cases where there ate very high levels of carbon monoxide

Causes of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Gas, oil wood and coal are fuel sources which many household appliances use:

gas fires
open fires
boilers
central heating systems
water heaters
cookers

Carbon monoxide gas is produced if the fuel in these appliance fails to burn fully. Running cars, burning charcoal and smoking cigarettes also causes the production of carbon monoxide gas.

Here the main causes of carbon monoxide poisoning are outlined.

Poorly Installed or Maintained Appliances
The main causes of accidental exposure to carbon monoxide are incorrectly installed and badly maintained household appliances, such as heating and cooking devices.

Household appliances should produce very little carbon monoxide gas provided that they are fitted correctly, used safely and well maintained.

Blocked Flues and Chimneys
Another potential cause of carbon monoxide poisoning are blocked flues and chimneys because they can prevent carbon monoxide gas from escaping and therefore allow it to build up to dangerous levels in a room.

Enclosed or Unventilated Spaces
The risk of carbon monoxide poisoning is increased by burning fuel in an enclosed or unventilated space, where there are no air vents, windows or doors left open or ajar. Examples of these would be a car engine which is left running inside a garage or a faulty heating boiler in a poorly ventilated kitchen.

Paint Fumes
Fumes from paint removers and cleaning fluids which contain methylene chloride can also cause carbon monoxide poisoning. Methylene chloride is converted into carbon monoxide when it is inhaled.

Diagnosis of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Diagnosis of carbon monoxide poisoning can be done by you GP based on a combination of your physical symptoms and the environment around you.

A blood sample will be taken if you have the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning. Your blood will be checked for carboxyhaemoglobin and if there is a level of 30%, this indicates severe exposure.

An electrocardiogram (ECG) might also be done to check how well you heart is pumping blood around your body.

It is important that you are aware of the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning and that you look out for the warning signs.

As well as the symptoms explained earlier, the following situations may also be signs of carbon monoxide poisoning:

other people in your house, flat, workplace etc have similar symptoms
your symptoms go away when you go away on holiday and come back when you return
your symptoms tend to be seasonal, e.g. you have more headaches in the winter time when the central heating is used more often.

Other possible signs to look out for are:

sooty marks on the wall around stoves, boilers or fires
sooty marks on the front cover of gas fires
smoke building up in rooms due to faulty flues
yellow rather than blue flames coming from gas appliances

If you or anyone else in your home or workplace develops flu-like symptoms with no temperature and you think it may be linked to a carbon monoxide leak you should:

stop using all the cooking and heating appliances which use fuel rather than electricity
open all of the windows
call the Health and Safety Executive Gas Safety Advice Line for advice. 0800 300 363
visit your GP as soon as you can

If you have a carbon monoxide leak you should make sure that a suitable qualified engineer inspects your cooking appliances and central heating and water appliances.

Treatment for Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
If you think that you have carbon monoxide poisoning you should move away from the possible source of the gas so your symptoms can be assessed.

You should consult your GP straightaway. You will probably not need to go to hospital if you have mild poisoning but it is still important that you seek medical advice.

You will be treated in hospital if you have been exposed to a high amount of carbon monoxide poisoning and given 100% oxygen through a tight fitting mask. Breathing in concentrated oxygen allows your body to replace carboxyhaemoglobin more quickly. You will carry on oxygen therapy until the levels of carboxyhaemoglobin decrease to a level below 10%.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a treatment which floods the body with pure oxygen and helps it to overcome the oxygen shortage that carbon monoxide poisoning causes.

Currently there is insufficient evidence with regards to the long-term effectiveness of HBOT for treating severe cases of carbon monoxide poisoning. Therefore, standard oxygen therapy is typically the treatment option.

In certain situations however, HBOT might be recommended. It may be used in cases of extensive carbon monoxide exposure and if there is suspected nerve damage. The decision to carry out this treatment is decided on a case by case basis.

The adult body has trillions of cells teeming with activity. A cell the basic unit of life can take in food, get rid of waste, and grow. Cells have three main parts.

The most important chemical elements of the body are carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and hydrogen. There are others that are important also. Every element is made up of units called atoms, two or more atoms combine to a structure called molecule. Some are made of atoms of only one element and if they combine with another element compounds are formed. Water would be an example of this. Water is the most basic compound in the human body.

There are four other main compounds of the body carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. These compounds are complex structures containing an element of carbon. Each have a job in the body. The bodies carbohydrates provide energy for activities. Proteins perform several jobs such as building cells and important chemical functions. Lipids store extra fuel and as building material for cells. The nucleic acids carry instructions for the traits of the next generation.

A cell the basic unit of life can take in food, get rid of waste, and grow. In the human body there are trillions of cells. Cells are alive. The body replaces cells as they wear out or die. Cells have three main parts. The covering which is skin like called cell membrane. The inside cytoplasm resembles soft jelly. The nucleus inside the cytoplasm referred to as the control center of a cell.

The membrane lets some materials in and keeps others out. Food and oxygen are allowed through the membrane. Wastes are given off and carried away by the blood. Making up most of the cell the cytoplasm filled with organelles or organs of the cell. The mitochondrion is an organelle that changes food to energy so it can be used. The lysosome gets rid of waste.

The nucleus a solid ball in center of cells. The chromosomes the rod like structures are contained in the nucleus. There are 46 sets of chromosomes inherited half from mother and half from father.

Chromosomes are made up of genes. Genes carry the inherited characteristics of the parents. They carry the genetic code. This code is formed by a chemical substance called DNA. This is the master plan making all living things different.

Cells not only grow but they reproduce. New cells replace dead cells after they complete the growing process. Cells divide into two cells, two cells into four, four cells into eight so on and on. When a cell divides each daughter cell is exactly like the parent cell.

Cells get food from blood. They covert food to energy called energy metabolism. They also use some food to make new cell materials. Some cells store fat for later use.

The adult body has trillions of cells teeming with activity. They are all different. Yet share some traits like basic structure and characteristics parts. The cells are life’s building blocks. Many kinds of different cells make up the human body in different sizes and shapes. Each cell has a special form that makes it fit for the special job it has to perform.

See what may happen in the Baltic Sea...

Images taken from the European Space Agency satellites show a huge area of the Baltic Sea (over 377,000 square kilometers) covered by a massive blanket of algae. The danger is even greater as algae significantly reduce oxygen levels in water, threatening all species live in this absolutely great.

Algae blanket stretches from Finland to Germany and Poland, and is the biggest phenomenon of its kind seen in the last five years. Experts say the blame fertilizers used in agriculture reached the Baltic Sea, and rapid heating of water and no wind. Algae grow rapidly and consume huge amounts of oxygen, threatening marine life and animals destabilising Baltic ecosystem balance. Researchers hope that these days, strong wind and big waves to cool water and reduce algae invasion.

Forestation is very much essential to us for living safely in the earth.

A large area of land abounding with trees, bushes etc is called forest. And deforestation means cutting down trees in large numbers. Trees are useful to us in various ways. They provide us with wood, food and other products, they give us shade and they help to prevent drought and floods. But the third of these services of trees is the most important. To draw quick profit from trees, men cut them down in large numbers. Trees are destroyed mostly for being used as fire wood. This destruction disturbs our ecological balance. It leads to soil erosion and deprives us of fruit and timber and causes economic loss. So, we have to realize thebad effects of deforestation.
