Prejudice - it's something that we cannot escape. It brings harm to the world, and causes homicide. To bring a stop to prejudice, we must ask ourselves "What causes prejudice?"

Prejudice plays a big role in many of the world’s problems today, and has greatly affected our lives. Many lives were lost due to prejudice, because prejudice causes discrimination which will eventually lead to war. According to Wikipedia, prejudice is “an assumption made about someone of something before having adequate knowledge to be able to do so with guaranteed accuracy.” There are many forms of prejudice in the world today; some seem ridiculous, whereas others may seem sensible to some people. One major type of prejudice is racism. Racism is the belief that one race is superior to another. There are many causes of racism, and each is interesting in its own way.

One of the main causes of racism is education. People are not born prejudiced towards other races, they gain it through life. During the age of the slave trade, young Caucasian children were taught that black people were less evolved than white people, and that black people were intellectually backward. Because of their education, they grew up to treat blacks just as badly as their ancestors had treated black people. This cycle lasted until the mid 20th century, but children from before were also affected. American children from the start of the 20th century were taught from a very young age to avoid black people and that they were superior to the black people. This has led to disturbing organizations such as the Ku Klux Klan, which is an organization which believes in white supremacy. The Ku Klux Klan is still active today, which shows us that there are still many people who are prejudiced against other races. Because of the Atlantic slave trade, people now think that black people are different from other races and treat them differently mainly because they were treated differently before. People can also be educated through life experiences. If a child was bullied by black kids while he was little, he might develop racial prejudice towards black people and think that they are all violent karate masters. If someone had one of their family members killed by a black person, he or she would probably end up thinking that all black people are serial killers. It may be just an assumption, but like boot thrown out the window, assumptions can lead to hatred and probably violence.

Another cause of racial prejudice is unfamiliarity. People who don’t receive much contact with other races tend to develop racial prejudice. Human beings fear what they do not understand, and when a person does not receive much contact with other races he or she will start to make assumptions about the other races based on the small amount of people he or she have met. As we all know it is impossible to accurately judge a large group of people just by looking at one or two people from that group, but when a person is faced with limited contact there is nothing else for that person to do. The situation becomes worse if a person was taught from a very young age to stay away from, say, black people, because they will have a higher chance of developing racial prejudice towards black people since that person did not have much contact with black people. Appearance also plays a big part in unfamiliarity. It is always somewhat scary to make contact with a different race for the first time. However, as time goes by, we will get used to the presence of a different race. However, some people will not be used to different races and will form racial prejudice against the other races because they look different. It may seem ridiculous that a person will purposely harass members of a different racial group just because they look different, but it has happened before and is happening right now. From this we can see that it is important to make contact with different kinds of people because if not enough contact is made, prejudice will be developed.

Racism can also be caused, believe it or not, by our very own instincts. It is completely natural to feel awkward around other races and feel happy and comfortable with our own race. As animals we also fear the destruction of our species and try to protect it by harming other species. This is where racism comes in. If we think that another race is going to harm our race, we will probably instinctively form prejudices about the other race. As we know, it is completely natural for a bird to fly away when something that it isn’t used to comes into view. This is the same with humans. If a stranger that looked entire different from you approached you, the first thought you will have would be a thought of defense. At this point prejudice has already been formed. This is especially true in modern society, because everyone has a fear of someone stealing their business or robbing their houses. As a natural instinct, human beings trust their own race more than they trust other races. Through this we can see that our instinct makes it even easier to form racial prejudices.

Racism can also be caused by feeling of unworthiness. If a person feels that he or she is unworthy, then consequently he or she will have the desire to feel superior to other people. One extremely easy way to make one’s self feel superior is to think that other people are unworthy. This has been the cause of many cases of racism. From this we can see that self esteem is closely related to prejudice and that a person with low self esteem is more likely to have racial prejudice than a person with high self esteem.

Last but not least, the biggest cause of racial prejudice is stereotype. With the click of a mouse button, children can watch many stereotypical videos online which will leave many deep impressions in their heads. With the touch of a button people can watch stereotypical shows and advertisements on television. With a flip of a page people can read fiction stories that include lots of stereotypes. Humans now have access to more information than ever, making stereotyping easier for them as well. This problem is especially worse with children, as sometimes the first time a child sees a black person is on an extremely stereotypical show. The child will then grow up thinking that all black men were like him. This will undoubtly lead to racial prejudice and maybe even racial discrimination. If a young girl reads a story about Chinese people eating new born babies, she will probably grow up thinking that Chinese people are horrible, ruthless creatures that practice cannibalism. This will also lead to racial prejudice. If a child reads a story about the cruel ways Columbus used to kill Native Americans, he or she may have the idea that all while people treat other races that way, and thus become afraid of them. This thought may lead to self defense related violence. Television is a very big threat. Since many children love watching television, they will undoubtly learn a lot from television. Many comedy shows today are very stereotypical, and depict, say, all black girls as divas and all white girls as cheerleaders. When a child is watching this he or she will begin to think about divas and cheerleaders and begin relating them to races. In the future, the child will have racial prejudice against blacks and whites and may think it is wrong for a black girl to become a cheerleader or for a white girl to become a diva. Therefore it is important to expose children to other races from a very young age in order to prevent these kinds of stereotypical images from blossoming in their heads. Stereotype can also be very dangerous sometimes. A person who thinks all black people are violent will be afraid of black people and perhaps take greater measures when threatened by a black person. A person who thinks all Japanese people are ninjas may carry a suitcase of weapons and a self defense tutorial book when traveling in Japan. A person who thinks all Muslims are terrorists may lead assaults on the peace loving Muslims. All of these actions are extremely dangerous, and are all caused by stereotypes. Propaganda plays a huge role in stereotypes. The Nazi propagandas state that Jews are filthy evil money suckers and cannot be trusted. Even though we now know that most of the Jewish populations are not like that, many people still believed it at the time of the Second World War. Propaganda is extremely dangerous because as we can see it even affected the people who knew many Jews well. Therefore it is important to interact with many different kinds of people to prevent the forming of stereotypes and to know when a statement is true or not.

Prejudice is a big problem in the world, and has been the cause of many violent acts. This is especially true for racial prejudice, as there are huge amounts of people in the world and only 3 races. This means that if someone starts a war because of their racial prejudice, the whole world will be in danger. Everyone has prejudices and stereotypes. Some can even be positive. However, in order to prevent negative prejudice we must try to make acquaintances and friendships with different people from different countries and races and encourage the young to do the same. If this is carried out successfully hopefully by the start of the next century, white, yellow, and black children will be able to stand together as a family, with no more myths of Chinese cannibals.

According to plans, the Spanish city of Barcelona will erect a monument to recognise gays, lesbians and transgendered people who have been persecuted and repressed “throughout history”.

The exact location of the pink, triangular stone monument, which will be unveiled in February, has not been decided yet. A spokesman for the city hall said the city’s most iconic site – the square surrounding Antonio Gaudi’s iconic Sagrada Familia church outside the Sacred Heart – “is one of the locations that has been proposed”, which means that it will be placed right opposite the basilica of the Sagrada Familia.

The announcement came just weeks after Pope Benedict XVI consecrated the city’s emblematic Antonio Gaudi-designed church as hundreds of gays and lesbians staged a mass “kiss-in” to protest the Roman Catholic Church’s stance on homosexuality.

As reported, a statement from the City Hall cited that the monument would include the inscription: “In memory of the gays, lesbians and transsexual people who have suffered persecution and repression throughout history. Barcelona 2011.”

The announcement has been welcomed by gay rights campaigners in the city as such a tribute has been demanded for some years by Spain’s LGTB gay rights association. They have sought recognition for historic crimes against gays in the city, especially those committed under the dictatorship of Francisco Franco all the way till his death in 1975. Under the regime of Francisco Franco, gays were shipped off to institutions that some activists had likened to concentration camps. Homosexuality was only legalised shortly after his death in Roman Catholic Spain in 1979.

The Spanish city of Barcelona will erect a monument to gays, lesbians and transgendered people, which is welcomed by gay rights campaigners in the city

The current government, headed by Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, has sought to promote gay rights as a major part of its liberal social agenda. The country is only the third member of the European, after Belgium and Netherlands, to allow same-sex marriage when the government passed the legislation in 2005. To date, thousands of gay marriages have since been performed in the country.

A picture of gay and lesbian couples rallying in Barcelona in 2005

The announcement has drawn the ire of the Roman Catholic Church and the leader of the opposition Partido Popular in Barcelona has demanded that the decision be reversed. Those in favour including transsexual activists and actress Carla Antonelli have questioned if the Partido Popular is arguing that the persecution and assassination of gays is somehow “less detestable than any other crime” or it is something that the party approves of.

Looking as if it is going to be turned into a huge row, council sources have indicated that the site opposite the basilica has now been ruled out. The city’s Sculpture Commission will soon make the final decision as to where the LGTB monument will be erected.

Human rights. what are they?who does it apply to?

Humanists are up in arms ,again. They reckon that school relgious based assemblies are detremental to non-believers human rights. This only applies to english schools, although those in other parts of the U.K should not become complacent.

First of all I will put my cards on the table and state that I am a Bible believing Christian. I adhere to the teachings of Jesus Christ, and if anyone who has studied thses sayings will realise that modern day religion has nothing to do with the teachings of Christ. Humanists state that they are non religious, have no allegiance to any religion, recognise and tolerate other religions, do not persecute religions and certainly do not terrorise others.Yet there is a move in schools in England to have religious assemblies banned, on the grounds of breaching non believers human rights. How can this be? humanists tolerate other religions, do they not? What about the Human rights of believers to have an assembly, or are their rights not part of Human rights? Seems that Humanists have to find out what they truly believe, or is it a trendy deal nowadays to persecute religions and Christianity in particular without having the full knowledge of what they are protesting about. I have nothing against the humanist viewpoint, in fact many of their points are mirrored in the teachings of Christ. if only they would take the time to understand them. I have recently attended a Humanist funeral and wedding. Both were very moving in their own way. What struck me especially at the wedding, was the detail of the couple that the Humanist knew about them. She took the time to get to know the couple, a lesson here perhaps for Ministers and so-called pastors. The most surprising thing about this wedding ceremony was that she finished with a Celtic blessing.

Human rights apply to everyone. We all have a right to life. A right to develop as human beings.A right to worship, peacefully, without persecution. To live in a safe environment where ever we are. Surely we have all have that right.

What happened to the homosexuals who had been sent to concentration camps by the Nazi's.

Most people know that the Nazis were just as ruthless with homosexuals as they were with Gypsies and Jewish people. The “pink triangle” was enforced for homosexuals in much the same manner as the Star of David was for the Jewish. There are several factors in the story that escape general recognition and knowledge, I do not pretend to have extensive knowledge in this area but what I recently learned makes me want to share that little knowledge.

The story line we generally hear or assume is that the Nazi’s took over Germany, began throwing everyone they hated into concentration camps where they would die until the Allies came along and put an end to this nightmare. Well yes and no. The law that made homosexuality illegal in Germany was known as “Paragraph 175” in 1871 and was amended by the Nazi’s, making it more draconian. Prior to the Nazi error, a number of sexual acts were “illegal” with relatively minor punishments. This becomes a key element later in the story.

Homosexuals had been kept on “pink lists” by the police, which were used by the Nazis to round up these “undesirables” and throw them into the concentration camps. Once a man (Aryan women were thought not to be subject to lesbianism) was arrested, his effects would be searched for address books and other clues as to where others might be found. Networks of spies were also formed to better rid the “pure Aryan” society of the homosexuals.

In the camps, those with the pink triangles faced not just the hatred of the guards, but all too frequently of their fellow prisoners also. Some were unfortunate enough to fall into multiple categories, being both Jewish and homosexual or Gypsy and homosexual. Camp prisoners were subject to experimentation, with SS physician Dr. Carl Vaernet specializing in medical procedures designed to turn homosexual men into heterosexuals. These horrendous consequences should all have ended once the camps were liberated.

Remember the mention of when the laws were passed? When the Allies were deciding who to release, those guilty of crimes that were against the law prior to the Nazi takeover were considered still criminal. Homosexuals were transferred to more conventional prisons where many were held for years to come. When other groups were compensated by the German Government financially for some of the horrors inflicted during the war, homosexuals were left out and the laws were not rescinded until 1969 in West Germany. Twenty years after the liberation of Europe from Fascist tyranny

Image via Wikipedia

, homosexuals still feared incarceration merely for being who they were. Homosexuality remained such a taboo subject, that it was not really until the late 1980’s that scholarship on the Nazi persecution of homosexuals really begun.

A documentary on this subject was released in 2009. Other sources of information on this subject:

Valentine day.

Valentine also said Valentine of Terni and Valentine of Interamna (Interamna Nahars, ca. 176 – Rome, 14 February 273) was a bishop and a Christian martyr. Revered as a saint by the Catholic Church, the Orthodox Church and later by the Anglican Church, is considered the patron saint of lovers. The oldest Valentine’s Day is an official document of the Church of secc.V-VI, where it appears his death anniversary. Still in sec. VIII another document tells us some details of the martyrdom, torture, decapitation night, the tomb by the disciples Proculo, Efebo and Apollonius, following the martyrdom of these and their burial.
Of noble family and was converted to Christianity and ordered the bishop of Terni in 197 just 25 years. Valentino was in the year 270 in Rome, came at the invitation of the speaker greek and latin craton, to preach the Gospel and convert the pagans. Invited by the Emperor Claudius II Goth to suspend the celebration of religion and to abjure their faith, refused to do so, even trying to convert the emperor to Christianity. Claudius II pardoned him from execution entrusted to a noble family. Valentino was arrested a second time under Aurelian, who succeeded Claudius II. The empire continued its persecution of Christians, and as the popularity of Valentine was growing, the Roman soldiers captured him and brought him out of town along the Via Flaminia to flagellated, fearing that the population could rise to his defense. He suffered martyrdom and beheading 14 February 273, at 98 years, at the hands of the Roman soldier Furius Placidus, the orders of Emperor Aurelian.
His remains were buried on the hill of Terni, LXIII mile of the Via Flaminia, near a cemetery. The place was built in the fourth century a basilica which now are kept enclosed in a reliquary, the relics of the saint. The relics seem to have been taken to the city by three disciples of the philosopher Craton, Apollonius, Efebo and prosecutors, converted by the future saint, and who were martyred for this theft.

HISTORY

Valentine, bishop of Terni, died in 273 AD C. during the persecution ordered by Emperor Claudius and was buried along the Via Flaminia, about two miles from Rome, and his tomb was discovered during excavations carried out in early 1900. The Church celebrates Valentine’s Day every year on February 14 a day dedicated to lovers, according to a centuries-old tradition, they exchange a symbolic gift heart-shaped to celebrate their love. In the days preceding this holiday store windows are enriched with large or small boxes, heart-shaped, brightly decorated with garlands of flowers, ready to be exchanged between lovers young and older people to celebrate the Holy protector of love. Even the sweethearts left the pen Peynet designed a little ‘help make this festival anywhere, sweet and dreamy, a desire to tender and poetic romance.

THE LEGENDS

There are many legends associated with the celebration of Valentine’s Day in England it is said that the creatures of the forest, feeling the spring to arrive around the middle of February, they began the season of love and courtship with sweet attentions, engaged couples looking these rites chose that time to exchange gifts and effusions electing their patron Saint Valentine on February 14 that met exactly. Even in ancient Rome was born a legend, a Roman centurion, a pagan love with a young Christian wife and decided to ask her to convert to the religion of his beloved, Valentine went to the Bishop to be baptized, but while preparing for the festivities first sacrament of his young girlfriend became so ill to fear for his life. Bishop Valentine called to the bedside of the girl and given the desperation of the young centurion, he raised his hands to the sky praying to the Lord that reaching up to the two young men a blissful sleep and oblivion enveloping the two hearts for eternity.

More and Bishop Valentine was in the habit, at the end of a day of prayer to get down into the garden to greet the children who came to see him, for every child Valentino gave a flower to wear, each, their mother, so was sure that children come home soon and bring a sign of love to their parents, hence the origin of small gifts you give to people we love. Bishop Valentine, feeling the two young lovers quarrel angrily and met them with words of reconciliation to two gave a rose to the tenessero together between your fingers, being careful not to prick with thorns, and the serene face and the flower did the miracle: the two young men made peace, and soon after married with the blessing of Valentino.

During the 15th and 16th centuries a craze swept across Europe, it was a craze as deadly for its tens of thousands of mostly female victims as was the plague bacillus to the population as a whole.

During the 15th and 16th centuries a craze swept across Europe, it was a craze as deadly for its tens of thousands of mostly female victims as was the plague bacillus to the population as a whole. It was not a new phenomenon, but this time it would reach the point of hysteria. It was the witch craze.

The term craze is a tendentious and provocative one, and some people prefer to use the term witch-hunt, for craze suggests that the persecution of witches was the result of some form of mental disorder, but then perhaps it was, for there is no doubt that it was primarily driven by a fear of women. This was not the only cause, as is the case with all social phenomena there were a combination of reasons: economic instability, a fear of the unknown, religious tensions, increased social paranoia. At such times someone or something has to be held to blame. During a period of history when the Devil was believed to be proactive on Earth and the war between Christ and AntiChrist was fought not in theological textbooks but everyday on every farm, in every workplace, and in every home, witchcraft was believed to be a real and prevalent menace.

The witch would invariably be a social outsider, an elderly widow, a single woman, a herbalist, an itinerant, a beggar. They would exercise their maleficia (malevolent magic) through touch, by an invisble but potent emanation from the eyes known as fascination, by prounouncing a malediction or curse meaning that the victim had been forespoken, they could also stick pins in images of their victims, bury a piece of their clothing, or write the name of the victim on a piece of paper and burn it. They could also harm a man by manipulating those parts of his being that were believed to hold his vital spirits, his hair, his excrement. Witches were thought to be responsible for failed crops, the death of farm animals, sickness and disease, and for still-born children. In time they would even be blamed for the weather, and male impotence.

Witchcraft, or magic, was widely practised and believed in during the middle ages. At a time when the medical profession seemed to hold few answers, and the use of narcotics and mind-altering agencies was high, people would regularly visit herbalists for a cure, sorceresses for a spell, and fortune-tellers for a prediction. This White Witchcraft was highly regarded and part and parcel of life particularly in the countryside. However, when times were hard, and when any area or village might be undergoing a local trauma, witchcraft would often be blamed. So the persecution of witches would often come in great waves of activity but then quickly die out. All this changed, however, with the increased activity of the Church. It was when witchcraft ceased merely to be malevolent and instead became diabolic, and associated with the work of the Devil, that local persecutions would become a continent wide, judicial, pogrom. So the witch persecutions that started around 1420 wouldn’t die out but instead increase in vehemence and ferocity for another 200 years.

On 9 December, 1484, Pope Innocent VIII published the Papal Bull Sumnis Disiderantes (Desiring With Supreme Ardour) demanding the hunting down and prosecution of all witches in northern Germany. This followed fast in the wake of his appointment of two Domincan Friars Heinrich Kramer and James Sprenger to produce a manual for the right and proper prosecution of witches according to the law and based upon the Biblical pronouncement taken from Exodus 22.18, “thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.” The fact that God had acknowledged their existence by making reference to them in the Bible and had proscribed against them was all the justification and legitimacy the Church needed to unleash a storm of persecution, torture, and execution. Kramer and Sprenger were to provide the legal framework for these persecutions.

The Malleus Malificarum was one of the most hateful and overtly misogynistic books ever written. Women it was said were vulnerable to Satan and prone to witchcraft. They are unreliable and mercurial creatures, weak, distracted by vanities, and superstitious; they are naturally spiteful; they are more concerned with matters of the flesh than men, and they use sex to cast a spell over men so they can do the Devil’s work. They then went on to establish rules to be followed for the identification of a witch and how they should be tried. For example, prior to trial the witch should be shaved of all hair because the hair held magical properties, they should then be stripped naked and made to walk backwards towards the judges so they were unable to give them the evil eye.

By the end of the 15th century witches had ceased to be the peddlers of magical potions, harmless eccentrics, or merely wicked old women, and had become devil worshippers who had committed heresy by denouncing God and who attended nocturnal meetings, the “Witches Sabbath” where they would copulate with the Devil. This Covenant with Satan soon became the essence of witchcraft and as such all witches had to be killed without exception.

Most witches were denounced by their neighbours, once the denunciation had been made they would be arrested by the Authorities and the process of compiling evidence against them would begin. Did she have animal familiars, a cat or a dog for these would be agents of the Devil, did she possess a broomstick for witches were believed to use them to fly, did she have the “Witches Mark” on her body, a wart or a pimple from which her familiars would suck her blood. Did it bleed when pricked. if not she was a witch. Did she possess needles or other sharp objects that were the instruments of the Devils work. If so then she would be put to the torture to force a confession. One of the most common ways of discovering the truth, so to speak, was ”Swimming.” The witch would be taken to a river or lake where she would be tied to a chair and immersed in the water. If she drowned she was innocent, if she survived, escaped, or managed to swim away, she was a witch and would be put to death.

The Witch Craze, which was to spread from northern Europe to very corner of the continent, was between 1420 and 1650 believed to have taken as many as 250,000 lives. It was always at its most ferocious at times of social dislocation, religious schism, and economic uncertainty. In Britain the persecutions peaked during the Civil War when the self-appointed Witchfinder- General Matthew Hopkins and his assistant John Stearne, executed some 300 witches between 1645 and 1647, mostly in Essex.

The hysterical response of a male dominated society to the possibility of witches in their midst was just another manifestation of a fear of women. That fear of women that has for so long kept them as second class citizens, and tried to reduce them to no more than the placid, child-bearing helpmates of man. A fear even to this day to be found eloquently expressed in legal statutes, and in religious texts that demand women remain at home, cover themselves up, or have no need of education.

From Hero or Villain: More Prisoners of Eternity.

Jack Johnson, was the first black Heavyweight Champion of the World and white people hated him for it. He battered white men around the ring, he knocked them out, he dated white women, and he demanded recognition and respect for doing so. He got neither, instead he became the focus of villification and a subject worthy of the attention of the law.

The World Heavyweight Boxing Championship was the premier sporting title in the World, and in 1908, it was not allowed to be held by a black man. But the finest boxer in the world was a black man, Arthur John Johnson, called Jack, born in Texas, and known as the “Galveston Giant.”

There was no doubt that he was the finest boxer of his generation but this cut little ice with the white men who ran the sport. A black man had never fought for the Heavyweight Championship before, and it was a title that was held in such high esteem that the very idea of a black man holding it was to many unthinkable. So he had to wait a long time for his opportunity. James J Jeffries, the champion at the time refused to defend his title against him because he was black. But he was a difficult man to ignore, especially when he knocked out the previous champion, Bob Fitzsimmons, in just 2 rounds.

Johnson was to get his opportunity and it was all to be of his own making. James J Jeffries, the last recognised great champion, had retired four years earlier and his crown had been inherited by the Canadian Tommy Burns, who at only 5′8 was the smallest ever champion at that weight. Johnson, who knew no fear and was not in the least intimidated by his socially inferior status in crypto-aparthied America, followed Burns everywhere harassing him at every turn. name-calling and bad-mouthing him, until Burns agreed to put his title on the line. They finally fought in Sydney, Australia, on 26 December, 1908. It was an embarrassingly one-sided affair and was all over in 10 rounds with Burns taking a fearsome beating. The fight had been filmed and it provided a traumatic experience for the viewing white public, as the much larger Johnson seemed to hold Burns up so as to continue beating him, and appeared to mock and abuse his corner-men. The cameras were switched off before the end to save the public from witnessing Burns’s defeat.

The white population in America were outraged and dumbfounded. How could this happen? But then Burns was not a proper champion, he was too small, and he had never actually won the title. The cry went out for the white man to put the black man in his place. Even such a noted liberal as the novelist Jack London, asked where was The Great White Hope. But Johnson continued to beat his white opponents including the middleweight champion Stanley Ketchel, and the future actor Victor McLaglen.

The pressure on James J Jeffries to come out of retirement and reassert the racial superiority of the white man became intense. In 1910, he yielded, announcing that he he’d had a change of heart and had decided to come out of retirement, ” to prove that a white man is better than a negro.” The public were sure he would win, after all he was unbeaten and had never even been knocked down, but he had also not fought for 6 years.

The fight took place in Reno, Nevada, on 4 July, 1910. in a specially built arena with a sell-out crowd of 22,000, and racial tensions ran high. The band played, ” All coons look alike to me “, and the the crowd chanted, ” Kill the nigger.” But the animosity and the white heat of racial hatred, didn’t seem to affect Johnson at all and he boxed superbly, fighting on the defensive, using his jab, and wearing down his opponent with vicious punches to the body. Jeffries appeared unable to land a significant blow. These were later described by the press as cowardly and devious tactics on the part of Johnson. But whatever they said later made no difference to the outcome of the fight. It was all over in the 15th round when Jeffries corner-men threw in the towel to save the ex-champion, who had already been knocked to the canvass twice, further punishment. The Fight of the Century, as it had been dubbed, had been won by the negro, who had danced and jabbed his way to a resounding victory.

The fight had made Johnson a rich man and overnight one of the most famous and notorious in the world. White America did not take the outcome well and as news of the result filtered through race-riots broke out the length and breadth of the the country which were to leave 23 black and 2 white men dead, with many hundreds more injured; and still the search went on for the Great White Hope. But Johnson was to remain champion for another 7 years.

Jack Johnson had two great passions, white women and fast cars. The former would ruin his life, the latter would end it. In 1911, he had met and married, Etta Duryea, and the relationship scandalised America. She was not just a white woman but a socialite who came from the upper-echelons of American society, and their relationship was a stormy and violent one rarely out of the newspapers and gossip columns. They often rowed in public and Johnson wasn’t shy in taking his fists to her. Suffering from depression, Etta took her own life just a year into their marriage. Within three months of her death, Johnson had re-married, this time to a white prostitute by the name of Lucille Cameron. Johnson would regularly cavort with prostitutes throughout his life and at one time even bank-rolled a brothel. The entire country white and black was outraged by his behaviour but he didn’t care and he wasn’t afraid, he would live his life as he wished. He was arrested a number of times but released. The White American Establishment continued to hound him however, and were determined to get him on a charge that would stick. On 18 October, 1912, Johnson was arrested for violation of the Mann Act, that is transporting a woman across State lines for immoral purposes. Lucille Cameron, who was soon to be his second wife, refused to testify against him and he was cleared of all charges. But the Authorities had found a charge they knew one day would stick. A little over a month later Johnson was again arrested on violation of the same Act. This time the prostitute involved, Belle Schreiber, did testify against him and he was found guilty by the all-white jury and sentenced to just over a year in prison. Johnson, who had no intention of serving his sentence, skipped bail and fled abroad. For 7 years, he and Lucille lived a celebrity lifestyle in Europe and South America. But he still needed money and he still needed to fight. On 15 April, 1915, Johnson put his title on the line against the 6′7″ cowboy, Jess Willard. Because Johnson could not return to America the fight had to take place in the sweltering heat of Havana, Cuba. After winning many of the early rounds Johnson began to visibly tire and Willard’s punches were taking their toll. He was finally ko’d in the 26th round, it had been coming. Johnson later claimed that he had thrown the fight so sick was he of all the hatred and animosity being champion brought him. But the fact is that he was 37 and passed his prime, and as Willard said, “If he threw the fight I wish he had done so earlier, it was as hot as hell out there.”

White America was delighted, as indeed were many in the black community, who resented his attraction to white women and saw his perceived adoption of white ways as a denial of his African-American roots. After many years abroad, Johnson returned to America and surrendered himself to the Federal authorities to complete his sentence. He was released from Leavenworth prison on 9 July, 1921, having served every single day of it. Johnson’s bubble had been burst and he was now short of money, so he continued to fight. But he would never fight for the world title again and his appeal at the box office diminished with every passing year. He did not have his last bout until 1937, when he was already in his sixtieth year by which time he was being regularly beaten. He was killed in a car crash in Franklinton, North Carolina, on 10 June, 1946, after angrily speeding away from a restaurant that had refused to serve him because he was black.

For much of his life Jack Johnson, was without doubt the most hated man in America. Though such animosity was in large part unmerited and centred solely around the colour of his skin and his racial background there is also little doubt, much like another negro champion some 50 years later, that he courted such bad feeling. He deliberately maintained a high profile, openly flouted convention, boasted of his physical prowess both in and out of the ring, and regularly defied authority. Once, when he was pulled over for speeding and fined $50 he handed the officer a $100 bill saying that he intended to make the return journey the same way. He was boastful, arrogant, and cocky, and he was hated for that almost as much as he was for his colour. The two combined made for a combustible mix. But could he have been who he was, achieved what he did, and survived the backlash, had he been any other way. When his third wife, Irene Pineau, was asked what she loved about her husband she replied, ” I loved him because of his courage. He faced the world unafraid. There wasn’t anyone or anything he feared.”
