Freud’s Anal Personality – is It Real?

The anal personality was defined by Freud in 1908. Since then, it has been changed and developed, and some, such as Levy and Scott (2006), propose that the obsessive-compulsive personality is the anal personality. Indeed, the DMS-IV’s description of Obsessive-Compulsive disorder contains many personality traits similar to those defining the anal personality. This essay will discuss this transition and the evidence for and against Freud’s theory.
