Pakistan school strives to beat the Taliban trap.

The boy was 2 when his mother dumped him on the streets, 4 when he spent his first night in a tiny prison cell, being sexually assaulted by an older inmate. Prostitution for money and shelter followed, then hashish, and glue-sniffing.

Now 10 and gangly, he fidgets and stares at the ground, speaking in a near-whisper. “I’m ashamed,” he says.

Yet in this rugged frontier city in northwest Pakistan, where people carry guns as casually as they would a daily newspaper, this boy has hope. He has found refuge in what for Pakistan is relatively rare: a charity-run boarding school for homeless, drug-addicted children.

Around Peshawar, heroin sells for less than $0.20 a high. “It’s the cheapest place in the world to get heroin,” says Mazahar Ali, the school’s manager. He gestures beyond the school’s high walls. Heroin and just about every other vice are just a short walk away, he says.

The drugs all come from nearby Afghanistan which, according to a 2011 U.N. report, provides 90 percent of the world’s opium, from which heroin is made.

For Pakistan, the result is more than 4 million addicts. Some of the youngest end up in mud-walled rooms being drilled in extreme Muslim doctrine by the Taliban who roam relatively freely in Peshawar.

“Sometimes the militants take these children to North Waziristan and teach them to be suicide bombers and sometimes they give the children drugs and the child might not even know that he is going to be blown up,” says Ali.

At the school, a boy named Osama told of memorizing the Quran, Islam’s holy book, while the Taliban hovered over him. He said he was tortured. He escaped, and a month ago was found sleeping on the floor of a ramshackle hotel, said Umaima Zia, the school psychologist.

On the lawn in front of the four-story school, Osama sat cross-legged on a chair in the afternoon sun, his small body swaying as he recited Quranic verses to his fellow students in a lilting voice.

A single working woman aged 25, Zia is unusual in this conservative region where girls are often married off soon after puberty.

Quick to smile, she gently draws out the kids’ accounts of what they have endured. She brings stuffed animals to the school, and even the older boys cling to them. She gave the sexually assaulted boy a furry lion-shaped hat which he rarely takes off except for prayers.

A while ago that child’s mother was found, but she would not take him back. “She didn’t want me,” he muttered, almost inaudibly “She said I was garbage.”

The Associated Press does not identify, in text or through images, persons who say they have been sexually assaulted.

Children generally stay three months at the boarding school, long enough to detox. Run by the Dost Foundation, a family-owned charity, it has 32 boarders, all boys. A separate facility for girls is planned, because mixing of the sexes in Pakistan is shunned. Zia told of finding one little girl knocking on car windows asking 50 rupees ($0.60) to bare her chest to the occupants. She was 6.

“It’s sad, so sad that there is nothing for girls here,” she said. “Most of the girls are homeless. Not so many are drug users. Many are scavengers but they are very vulnerable to abuse.”

Eleven of the boys in the school are intravenous drug users and two have AIDS.

Dr. Sikander Khan, whose family started the charity 20 years ago, says the AIDS problem is getting worse. Pakistan is a poor country, and 70 percent of its 180 million people are under 30 years old, with more children using drugs intravenously and AIDS rates rising, Khan said.

Khan, a physician who interned in New York, estimated roughly 7,000 children were living homeless on the streets of Peshawar.

He said roughly half of Pakistan’s heroin addicts are believed to be intravenous users, a dramatic change. Discussion of sex is taboo, and although the U.N. estimates there are 97,400 HIV patients, only 4,112 are registered.

Khan’s charity also supports community-based schools and provides rehabilitation facilities for adult addicts as well as vocational training for young boys and girls. It gets money from the European Union, U.S. and U.N., but Khan says it is short of funds and has had to close some of the schools.

“There is a lot of (international) funding for infrastructure like roads, but when it comes to drugs, when it comes to street children and shelter homes, the funding is not there or it is very small,” said Khan.

But he said the trend might be changing, if only because of the fear that the neglected children will become Taliban fodder.

He said there is evidence this recruiting is happening. There’s no certainty the children are being turned into terrorists, but he sees a growing recognition that they are exploitable and need help.

Inam, 15, has been through detox at the boarding school several times. Short and squat, he is notorious as Peshawar’s most accomplished pickpocket – so notorious that he was the subject of a documentary. He has his own gang, has been in prison on attempted-murder charges, keeps police officers on his payroll and has scars on his leg from acid thrown by rivals who tried to steal his gun.

A month ago he discovered he has HIV, and his tough-guy image crumbled. He believes he got the virus from sharing needles with other drug users. As he spoke his eyes grew wet, but he quickly wiped them with his sleeve and composed himself.

On the wall of the children’s dormitory, a poster tries to offer hope with words in English written against a backdrop of hellish red flames: “I am in hell but that doesn’t mean I will stay forever.”

A true story.(Making of a Terrorist)

It is a story of Mohammad Nazir who was born on Mohammad Day 1990. His father Mr. Taufiq Nazir was a successful businessman and had extended his textile industry to almost all major Pakistani cities. He lived in a city of Peshawar. He lived in a joint family and was the only son in his extended family of 61 members. Everyone loved him and almost all of his wishes would come true within a short period of time. His father had three wives, he had 23 children’s from his three wives out of which 22 girls and one he himself. He had three uncles, five aunts, 26 cousin sisters. He was good in his studies. Everything was going on nicely with him till a day in January 2003. His life was completely changed after that day.

One day when the entire family was celebrating a family function in their home, Mohammad was asked to go to Karachi with his Uncle and Aunt where he was going to spend his one month long vacation. He was going to stay with his uncle and aunt in one of their old homes in Karachi. One night he saw something that had a mental effect on him. He was about to sleep when he realised that he had not wished good night to his aunt whom he was very close to. He went to their room and the room was open. When he entered inside he came across something he had never thought of. His uncle and aunt where totally undressed and were lost in deep lust. They were kissing each other everywhere and Nazir show his aunt with no clothes. He did not realise that even he was feeling the intimation as his organ got big and was almost coming out from his underwear’s. He went back to his room and could not sleep the whole night. He could not help himself thinking of the erotic nature of his uncle and aunt. Finally when he fell asleep, he was lost in lovemaking scenes in his dreams. He did not realise that it was the first time he had experience the so called pleasure of Orgasm. It took him a couple of days to realise that he was having orgasm every night. He started to view porn sites in the Internet and it was from there that he learnt the act of Masturbating.

One month later he was a man with exotic desire and grew up the habit of Masturbating more than two times a day. He was back to his school in Peshawar. His school dress was a half pant and shirt with tie and belts. Now even in school he started to get exotic feeling when he used to see girls with short skirt. He was no more a normal boy and soon his was caught red-handed in toilet by his friends. They started calling him a masturbating machine when they realised that he used to masturbate more than once in a day. Once during his class he suddenly felt exotic by seeing a lady teacher dressed in sari. He could not control himself. He tried a lot by not facing her but he felt an orgasm and the worst part was that he had his half-pant wet. He tried to hide his wet half-pant by his bag after the school was over but all his friends understood what he was trying to do and started teasing him. It soon became his nightmare. He was even caught masturbating by one of his aunt, while he was masturbating and watching one of his cousin sisters taking shower. He developed a feeling of shy among everyone. He developed a psychic feeling. Whenever someone would try to look towards him he felt that person knows his act and started to feel guilt. He was in a state of depression. He started to miss his school by making unwanted excuses and while at home he would watch porn sites on internet or even hire an adult movie and watch it in his own room in his computer. He was desperate and wanted to feel the lust. One day he made a decision that he will somehow go to a red-light area and enjoy the pleasure of sex. He left home for school but changed his way and was in the red-light area within no time.

Two Americans were slightly injured Friday after a bomb exploded at the passage of Taliban armored car in which they were, killing a civilian who was in the area in Peshawar (northwestern Pakistan), the first direct attack which targeted Member U.S. after the death of bin Laden AFP.

Two Americans were slightly injured Friday after a bomb exploded at the passage of Taliban armored car in which they were, killing a civilian who was in the area in Peshawar (northwestern Pakistan), the first direct attack which targeted Member U.S. after the death of bin Laden AFP.

These Islamic insurgents, who allied with al-Qaeda in 2007 and then leading a bloody campaign of bombings in Pakistan have claimed the attack to avenge the September 11 attacks the brain, killed May 2, north country, by a commando U.S. heliopurtat.

In the morning, “the U.S. consulate two cars heading for the consulate was attacked,” said Alberto Rodriguez, U.S. Embassy spokesman in Islamabad.

“A vehicle was damaged, no person of our staff was not seriously injured and none killed,” he explained.

He said that “American diplomats and the Pakistani consulate staff were on board.

“One person was killed, a man who went on a bike, and 11 are injured, including two foreigners in the armored car,” he said in turn Liaqat Ali, a Peshawar police officer, the great city of north-west country, located near the tribal areas which is the bastion of Taliban and al-Qaeda organization.

Ali said the two armored car passenger suffered “very light wounds, but have already left hospital.

According to Hukam Khan in Peshawar bomb squad unit, the 50 kilograms of low-power explosives were hidden in a car bomb was triggered remotely.

“There was explosive quality, so damage is relatively small,” he said.

4×4 armored car was hit in the back of the blast threw her into an electricity pole.

The first of the rear window glass was broken but not the second, a powerful armored glass. In the rear-right, where the bomb exploded, solid rubber, no air space to this type of armored cars, remained intact.

“Osama was our leader and Americans are the worst terrorists,” said Ehsanullah Ehsan, a spokesman for the Taliban Movement of Pakistan (TTP), claiming the attack. Death to “encourage our fighters and we will intensify our attacks will cause them (…), such losses that Americans will never forget.”

TTP is primarily responsible for a wave of about 480 attacks that killed nearly 4,400 people throughout Pakistan in the summer of 2007 when, together with bin Laden himself, have declared jihad Islamabad for supporting Washington in late 2001.

From Peshawar bombing occurred when the U.S. envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Marc Grossman, is in the country, where he met Thursday with Pakistani leaders in Islamabad.

Last Friday, a double suicide bombing outside a police training center in Shabqadar, in the northwest, killed 98 people and injured over 140 people.

TTP immediately claimed the attack “an act of revenge first death of Osama bin Laden.”

Brain attacks of 11 September was eliminated on May 2 in a villa in Abbottabad, a city-garrison in northern Pakistan, a U.S. Special Forces commando.

An article expressing the author's views on the name-changing debacle of North-Western province of Pakistan. Specifically for those interested in the backdrop for the name changing process of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa - formerly known as North-West Frontier Province.

Pakhto (Pashto) or Pakhtun?!?

By Aimal

Did you know…?

“NWFP – North-West Frontier Province – was actually born on 9th of November, 1901, whilst a Chief Commissioner reigned over the province; the then Chief Commissioner was actually the C.E (chief executive) of NWFP.”

Stated above is a fact that can be confirmed in authentic history books relevant to the subject. This is a fact that not even the most literate populace of Pakistan knows about. This is that fact which makes the name change of the province, in my humble opinion, a debacle that has been wasting the time, energy, resources, and much needed capital of a country whose economy is spiraling down the drain with each passing day. Don’t trust each and every fact and figure that this PPP-led government tells you. In the words of the famous stand-up comedian considered to be many as the god-father of comedy; Robin Williams once said in on of his live acts while mocking the end of the eight year reign of Bush Jr. on US:

“… they say that the economy is essentially sound because people are considering buying things. [C'mon!!] That’s like saying Fat people are healthy because they MIGHT exercise! …”

All of that was Robin’s satirical way of telling us how Bush handled matters related to economy and other pressing issues of his time, right before Obama came and the economy took an upturn. Imagine – Pakistanis – that the same is very true for what the former rulers did to this country, or so say many of his so-called intellectuals, current-affairs analyzers, and critics of Pakistani politics. Though the latter part – the part where Obama jumps in and saves the day for US – is just the opposite for Pakistan. The PPP-led government has so far done little to be signified against its loss of control over the economy of Pakistan.

The recent name-changing process that took place in Pakistan has a history behind it that many do not know or care about. It is primarily about the Pakhtuns having (and not having!) a sense of self-consciousness and national integrity. To bring it all into one article for the know-how of the general populace would be a matter of writing a thesis about the topic from scratch. But what I can add to the topic is that Pakhtoons are known to be a brave and gallant nation. Now saying that, being brave and gallant has its cons. It isn’t being brave when you kill your own brothers from the same ancestry that you belong to just for the cause of up keeping the honor and name of your family/tribe!

The Pakhtoons are a brave nation with a mindset that and ambition that kept at bay even the most powerful armies of the world during different times in history (read: The Mughal and the British Empire). This bravery has caused a kind of genetic malfunction in that part of brain where a sense of affection and love for your country’s soil develops. The concept of being patriot is something very different from the mainstream idea, but I won’t go into the details of that.

The sad part about all this brave and chivalrous mindset of the Pakhtuns is the fact that they have disregarded the true notion of adhering to their mother soil. The fact that Pakhtuns want to stick to a concept of patriotism that starts with being hospitable and ends with defending your home territory is just half of the picture that this nation fails to understand. What the need of the time is that there has to be created a sense of awareness and self-being.

Questions! Who are the Pakhtoons really? What does the word “Pakhtunistan” actually represent? And why is it so important for us to have a different name for the land where the majority of the world’s Pakhtun population lives in? These questions are in the minds of a handful few that have a satisfactory level of literacy and a mind capable of bearing wisdom once the stomach is filled. The remaining majority of Pakhtuns is the one which has been living off in poverty in the under-developed villages where education is something regarded as being satanic in nature, and children are taught the ways of religion while the parents stay happy at the thought of their child being versed in reading the Holy Book as the goal of their education. This majority has in fact developed its so-called backward thinking due to the past bloodshed and continuous attacks from various Empires on the Pakhtun territory during various times in history. The wars, even when won, leave lasting impressions that last for generations.; the effects of which are clearly visible in today’s Pakhtun populace.

Although it may seem that I am veering away from the topic at hand, but having a history lesson that might explain the current mindset of this nation should be helpful for some. Many don’t even know about the background of the name-changing process that took place in 2010 for the North-Western province of Pakistan. Taking you back to the very initial introductory quote for this article, the name North-West Frontier Province was actually a name given to this land by the British Empire. Even at that moment, it wasn’t the Pakhtuns who chose a name for themselves. That name took over a century to be changed to what it is right now; Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The irony is that even the new name hasn’t been chosen by the Pakhtuns. With Punjab’s 3/4th majority vote required to fulfill the voting criteria and passing the resolution in the Senate and the parliament of Pakistan, it is an ironic laughter that will be written down in the history books as the North-Western province gets to change its name to something that hasn’t been decided by its own majority vote. I mean, if Punjab and the rest of the provinces wouldn’t vote in favor of the resolution, we’d still be stuck with the 1901 name (and I wouldn’t have been writing this article at the moment!).

To summarize it all up, Pakhtuns have never had a chance to realize that what they really need is not a new name for their home-land. What is needed for them is to realize; the sense of belongingness to the nation as one; the idea that Pakhtuns can stand for their rights while the corrupt as well as selfless bureaucracy comes and goes like money in the hands of a beggar; the notion that they, too, have the right to utilize the resources that are rightfully theirs; the need to replace the feeling of extreme Pakhtun-wali in the minds of Pakhtoons with a softer, more open approach towards eminent issues at hand such as education and standing up for what should rightfully be theirs.

I hereby humbly request the Pakhtuns to stop fighting for names and wake up. Wake up, to open your eyes to the fact that there are conspiracies going on and around us that have been conspired by the most skillful of conspirators. Open your minds to the idea that there needs to be a sense of positive political awareness among the nation. And open the doors of your heart to the rest of the Pakistanis. I would like to conclude it all with some food for thought. Specifically for the Pakhtun readers out there on the web, and in the world, that might notice all of this. I’ll quote my father (who is a sea of knowledge – and an engineer) here:

“What is more important? Pakhto (Pashto) or Pakhtun?”

It is expected that the North-Western frontier province of Pakistan will be renamed as Pakhtunkhwa before the end of 2008.

To start with, I must remind the readers that Asif Ali Zardari, co-chairman of the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party recently announced a constitutional package in which it was proposed that the North Western Frontier Province of Pakistan that should be renamed as Pakhtunkhwa. This was a long-lasted demand of the Pashtoons.

Pakhtunkhwa, Pashtoonkhwa, or Pakhtoonkhwa means The Land of the Pashtoons. This name was used for the area where Pashtoons were dominant before the creation and forming of modern day Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The earliest available historical proof is Akhund Darweza’s (d. 1638) Makhzanul Islam (written between 1603 and 1612). A verse in this book reads: “Pakhtunkhwa pa misal shpa wa, dai deewa wo pa andher ke” (Translation: Pakhtunkhwa was like a night and he [Pir Baba Syed Ali Termezi] was like a candle).

Similarly, the often-quoted two lines of a poem by Ahmad Shah Abdali (1723-1773), the Founding Father of Afghan state, clearly mention Pakhtunkhwa as the land of the Pashtoons or Pakhtuns. Here are the lines:

Da Dehli takht herawoma che rayad kram
Zama da khpale Pakhtunkhwa da ghro saroona

(Translation: I forget my Dehli throne when I recall the mountain peaks of my own Pakhtunkhwa).

After him Pashto poets and writers have frequently used this name for the area which was later named as North Western Frontier Province by the Britons after they occupied and separated it from Afghanistan dividing the Pashtoons into four divisions.

Besides Pashtoons, there are many non-Pashtoons who have mentioned this name in their writings. A book by French orientalist James Darmesteter (March 28, 1849-October 10, 1894) has the title, “Da Pakhtunkhwa Bagh w Bahar”, a selection of Pashto poems with a valuable essay on this Afghan language.

So the Pashtoons are entitled historically, morally and constitutionally to have their own and original name for their province. The other province of Pakistan have the names that match to their people like: Punjab is the land of the Punjabis, Sindh is the land of the Sindhis, Baluchistan is the land of Baluchis and the Pakhtunkhwa should be the name of the land of the Pashtoons.

Pashtoons were deprived of this name by Britons who, after occupying Hindustan, named it as N.W.F.P. while Baluchistan remained as British Baluchistan.

Some important information

It is expected that the government will change the province’s name to Pakhtunkhwa before the end of this year. Its’ capital is Peshawar, official language is Pashto, Area is 74521 km, population is 19,343, 000, and have 24 districts.
