With the Pirates of the Caribbean being such a successful franchise will the next movie ‘Pirates of the Caribbean 5’ be an equal success?

The script for the 5th installment of the movie was confirmed by scriptwriter Jerry Bruckheimer and is expected to be released at cinemas in 2013. Due to the success of ‘On Strangers Tides’, Director Rob Marshall is speculated to return to direct the 5th installment.

With the absence of Orlando Bloom and Keira Nightly in the 5th installment of the movie, fans are left worried about the quality of the movie; and to add more dread and confusion, it’s been speculated that Johnny Depp will also not be staring in the next installment.

Johnny Depp during an interview with THR stated he will only do a 5th Installment of the movie if he deems to script to be good enough. In his own words: ‘It boils down to story, script and filmmaker…It’s not something where I would say, ‘Let’s shoot it next month to get it out by Christmas 2012. We should hold off for a bit. They should be special, just like they are special to me.”

With all Pirates of the Caribbean films being successful at the box office, with grosses of over 600million, Let’s hope this next installment will be a success.

We all loved the first three; then they brought out a fourth- and now a fifth? Are not yet done sailing those oceans?

Ask anybody to think of the first thing that pops into their heads when you say Pirates of the Caribbean, and no doubt they’ll picture Jack Sparrows drunken-like swagger, or him pointing his compass that ‘doesn’t work’ at the helm of the Black Pearl.
And this is understandable- as that was the true Jack of the first three films. Those were epic. A confusing plot if you didn’t follow it and just dipped in and out- but filled with laughter and then tension; a perfect comedic mix.
However, compared to these epic three films; in the opinion of many movie-goers, Pirates of the Caribbean 4 was itself a let down. We all loved to see Jack back, but we didn’t have the iconic Elisabeth Turner (nee Swan) nor the handsome Will Turner himself. Then the plot got even weirder when we had BlackBeard doing magic with no explanation whatsoever (at least Davy Jones was explained) and a mermaid.
In my personal opinion- the film was a let -down. It was a revival of the characters simply for money- with not a single piece of the original three films. The lack of original characters highlighted this- as there at least could have been some mention of some of the characters instead of a complete abandonment.
And now a fifth film! Not even coming out in cinemas this year, Pirates of the Caribbean 5 is expected out in 2013. Some flying rumours say that Johnny Depp himself has jumped ship and will not be returning – at least someone has some sense!
The fans of the movies will of course be queuing up to see the film- not in excitement for a new movie- but merely to see how terrible it really will be.

Explination of the changed scheduled date for the release of Pirates of the Caribbean five.

Johnny Depp is still not officially committed to starring in Pirates of the Caribbean 5, franchise screenwriter Terry Rossi is working without his usual writing partner (Ted Elliott) on the film’s script, and it looks like Disney has failed to convince a high-profile filmmaker like Tim Burton, Sam Raimi, or Alfonso Cuarón to direct the movie.

Does that mean we might not get to see Depp as Jack Sparrow on the big screen a fifth time? Of course not. It just means that a followup to the hit fourth entry in the Pirates series, On Stranger Tides, is slowly making its way down the production pipeline and probably won’t be released until, say, Summer 2014 – which is just as well, since Depp already has a big-budget extravaganza scheduled for Summer 2013

Musings on a nice little franchise.

Given all the hype that the fifth entry into the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is generating a fuckton of traffic at the moment, I thought I’d give some musings on the franchise…

It astounded me when I left the cinema, went home, and clicked on the reviews to find that Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End was received so poorly. I thought it was brilliant, and a real return to form after the overly-long deluge of random stunts that was Dead Man’s Chest. The characters swapping allegiances all over the place, all with perfectly solid and believable motivations to be doing so, kept this viewer hooked and the storyline is just the right side of convoluted. The death and subsequent resurrection of Will Turner aboard The Flying Dutchman is fantastic stuff.

Pintel and Ragetti are a superb double-act, and Mackenzie Crook needs a role in Doctor Who.

Turning Bill Nighy into Davy Jones is modern CGI’s greatest achievement, bar none.

The greatest moment of the franchise? The climactic battle of the first film, when Jack staggers back into the moonlight…”couldn’t resist mate.” Classic.

Sod writing this, I’m off to have a Pirates marathon. Ciao.

There has been a lot of talk about a fifth pirates of the Caribbean movie, I'm here to share with you some of the facts and false's behind this.

Pirates of the Caribbean is a well known movie series starring Johnny Depp as the main character – Captain Jack Sparrow – in all four movie. The first movie “The Curse of the black Pearl” hit the screens in 2003, making more than $46.000.000 on its opening week. At first journalists thought the movie would be a big flop, but boy were they proved wrong!

The second “Dead Man’s Chest”, Third “At Worlds End” and Fourth “On stranger Tides” movies were just as big as the first ones scoring over $500.000.000 in the opening weeks, at this point I think its safe to say that this chain of movies is very popular.

As for rumours of the fifth movie, these are true. Although not much is know about the fifth movie, what we do know is that in October 2011, Jeff Bruckheimer confirmed they were working on a new script. In an interview with Kevin McNally, we found out that production could start in the summer of 2012. We also know that because of the financial success of On Stranger Tides the director “Rob Marshall” may return to direct it. Lastly, if all goes well, we are hoping for a 2013 summer release.

For now, if you see anything advertising they know the title of the movie, or the plot, I suggest you stay well away, as it could in theory bug up your computer, or it is just someone playing a joke on you.

Thanks for reading and lets hope that the 5th movie is released in 2013

The new movie?

Pirates of the Caribbean is a good film series, with a steadily growing audience. It is no surprise then that it is confirmed that the writers are working on a new script for a new movie. It is expected to be released in the summer of 2013. But who and what will be in it?

Many has speculated that Keira Knightley(Elizabeth Swann) and Orlando Bloom(Will Turner) will return as their respective characters, but i believe that is a distant possibility. The director of the last movie, Rob Marshall choose to not include those characters in the last movie, and give more way for the Johnny Depp character to expand. It is highly unlikely that he will choose to include them this time.

Director Rob Marshall who directed the last movie in the series made a good move to exclude Knightley and Bloom, but instead of working on expanding the roles of the existing characters he choose to create new characters that were equally as bad as Bloom’s and Knightley’s characters. Although the acting of the persons were not bad, they are characters were. Hopefully there will be less characters in the next movie.

The next movie’s plot is a lot to speculate about. I believe it will revolve around Captain Jack Sparrow’s stealing of those miniature bottle ships, and how he will get them out. It also highly likely that Penelope Cruz will return as her character, as it was hinted in the post credit scene that she was not done with Sparrow. I hope and do not believe that Sam Claflin returns to his role, as it was unnecessary and redundant. But i do hope that the Black Pearl’s old crew will be back in the next movie. Who could forget the wonderful performance of Pintel and Ragetti?

In short, Pirates of the Caribbean 5 has the potential of becoming a good movie, just hope for the best.

Too often cinema snobs ruin the fun of seeing an action movie.

Wow, I am tired of reading about how Jerry Bruckheimer’s newest installment of his Pirates of the Caribbean franchise will be a joke of a movie. Just settle down with all that pretentious rhetoric you movie snobs. Is the movie going to be a cinematic masterpiece? No. Will there be plenty of cheesy dialogue and an over-reliance on special effects? Undoubtedly. That doesn’t mean that it’ll be a complete time suck. I’m taken back to an episode of Beverly Hills 90210 where Brandon, in a fit of frustration, tells smarty pants Andrea that sometimes he goes to movies so that he doesn’t have to think, so that he can just escape. I echo this statement. Does everything in my life have to enrich me culturally? Is there something wrong with just wanting to escape from reality for a few hours? No and double no my priggish film friends.

What I enjoyed most about the other two Pirates of the Caribbean movies I saw was that I didn’t have to always engage with the movie. I could zone out from the plot or characters for a bit and enjoy the visceral flash and boom of the explosions. If I wanted to be intellectually chall

enged I’ll go to the local art school’s film showcase on Fridays. I’m just saying that I think some art people need to broaden their perspectives about what movies and art are about. Art is not absolute. It doesn’t have rules which dictate this is good and this is bad. In fact, a piece typically is best understood when it is judged against itself. Pirates isn’t trying to peel back the complexities of modern life. It’s just trying to be entertaining. And for me, it does that successfully.

Piracy is alive and well in the twenty first century. The problem wont go away soon and represents a real challenge for the international community.

Pirates of Penzance

If the thought of pirates conjures up the image of a bluff old seaman with one leg and a parrot on his shoulder then think again. Pirates are very much a modern phenomenon and the scourge of busy sea lanes. The seas off the coast of Somalia are rife with highly organised gangs of pirates. They use high speed skiffs to intercept commercial and private shipping. The pirates are well armed with modern automatic weapons and rocket propelled grenade launchers. By utilising mother ships as a sea base they are able to extend their operations deep into international waters. The seas surrounding the Arabian peninsular are no longer safe. Commercial shipping has responded by moving further out to sea away from the usual trade routes. However, resourceful and well organised pirate gangs have reacted by extending their sea borne operations accordingly.

Pirates off Somalia

Collapse of Government

Pirates can only operate where there exists no organised central government. After decades of civil war Somali’s central government exists in name only. Warlords control most of the country and the government lacks authority and power to establish the rule of law.The cost to the international community is staggering to contemplate and difficult to calculate with accuracy. Piracy has disrupted shipping and deliveries causing increased global trade costs to the value of $10 billion a year; this represents only one aspect of the economic burden imposed by Somalian piracy.Piracy is a lucrative, although hazardous, occupation for dispossessed young Somalian men. Pirates make their money from ransom. Valuable cargo or the lives of the captured bring in millions of dollars every year. In 2010 an estimated $230 million dollars was obtained by Somalian pirates in income. The international response to the problem has seen a rare degree of cooperation from the world’s naval forces that is historically unprecedented. The global economic burden of piracy has forged unlikely international alliances. To date, naval vessels from 28 nations are cooperating on anti-piracy patrols. Legally vessels are only able to detain and prosecute pirates if they are caught actively engaged in piracy. This has lead to the frequent release of pirates due to judicial impotence.

The Economic Cost

The Income

International Response

Generally peace time maritime regulations do not allow merchant vessels to carry weapons. The US government has recently allowed ships sailing under the American flag to carry armed security guards. Non-lethal measures and anti-pirate training is also being introduced by an increasing number of nations. Measures such as lining the deck with razor wire and high pressure hoses are being introduced to repel pirate boarders. Smaller vessels are being equipped with laser devices which dazzle and cause temporary blindness at the distance of several miles.

No End in Sight….

There are no easy solutions to the Somalian piracy problem. Combined and continued operations by multi-national forces by sea and land are needed to provide security for merchant vessels plying their trade in international waters. These measures however offer no long term solution. Ultimately the solution will come from within Somalia itself. The establishment of a strong and stable national government is needed for the effective control of its shore and territorial waters. Economic viability is also a key requirement to restore the rule of law to this war torn country. I suspect this prospect will be a long time coming and piracy will continue to be a problem in this region well into the twenty first century.
