The officer also warned that it “only takes a second or two for some individual to get into the running vehicle with the children in it and steal the car.”

Not The First Time

When the police asked why one of them did not wait inside the minivan while the other shopped, neither the mother nor the father were able to answer the question. The 3 or 4 year old could probably answer the question.

A Hustler Hollywood clerk told the police that the couple had shopped in the store before and had also left their kids in the car on that occasion. The clerk said she had called police that time as well but the couple left before the police responded.

Perhaps a just punishment would be for the couple to wear whatever garments they purchased to their court hearing and then the father would be ordered to report for Army duty dressed in the very same attire. A certain cure for this miscreant, wouldn’t you think?

A survey and research study on pornographic video was conducted to determine the effects of watching pornographic videos containing sex episodes.

A conservative citizen born in a conservative country, we often expect that viewing videos with sexual contents often result to immature sex engagement or unpleasing behaviours. With global rise of home-based media technologies, most movies and video clips today having more sexual contents are becoming more accessible and influential to today’s youths. And oftentimes, some movies present sex before marriage which is also known as pre-marital sex.

The question here is that “What will be the impact of these rampant trends to the behaviours of youth?” “Is it true that youths having highest level of exposure to porn videos are more likely to have initiated sexual intercourse than those with the lowest levels of exposure to sexual content in the media?”

It is important to study the effects of porn videos in order to solve the problem of pre-marital sex here in the Philippines. However, we only limit the study with the effects of viewing porn and if it is really one of the causes of pre-marital sex today.

II. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

In an online article by Lagorio (2006), she stated that researchers found that “teens who see and hear a lot about sex in the media were 120 percent or 2.2 times more likely to have early sexual intercourse as those who are rarely exposed to sexual content.” Another online article by Strand (2010) stated that “adolescents who have experimented first with pornography tried to do what they saw on the screen”. Some effects of porn addiction could be early sexual behaviour, early pregnancy, ever-increasing sexual lust, masturbation as the easiest way of release, and even rape. “Men consuming porn rate their real partners much less attractive” and they prefer to go online.

Princeton’s Witherspoon Institute researcher, Pamela Paul (2010) also found out that “porn today is far more violent” because it becomes a “sexual junk food” for the men as well as women. 

In the contrary, the 1970 Presidential Commission on Obscenity and Pornography conclude that “there is no relationship between exposure to erotic material and subsequent behaviour.” Defenders of pornography argue that it is not harmful and should not be regulated or banned. 

III. METHODOLOGY OF RESEACH

Among the students in Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) in Dumaguete City, 

Philippines, the registrar listed 1,160 fourth year students including graduating and non-graduating. We get the 8.6 percent of the total fourth year population in Main Campus I and II to carry out this purposive survey. Thus, this study conducted in 2011 involves only 100 respondents. 

The moment we started wandering inside the campus to look for fourth year students to be surveyed, we noticed that there are different reactions given every time the questionnaires are passed to the students. Some frowned, laughed, mostly embarrassed and commented that they are disgusted with the questions and those should have been written in a different tone or way. Also majority of the students enquired why we chose this certain topic to be studied. However, there were also students who vigorously answered the questionnaires and some got conscious about what we have found out so far. We also noticed that most of those who reacted negatively were males. 

Moreover, there is this one male student from the College of Business and Accountancy (CBA) who accused us of promoting pornographic videos in the campus. He also corrected us saying we should have changed some of the questions because these were so vulgar.

Another student from the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) turned his back the moment he read the questions on the paper and said our questions are “brutal”.

Meanwhile, the Bachelor of Science in Criminology students had reacted positively to the survey. This 24-year old female said that students should be truthful in answering our questions since this is a good and interesting study. Another criminology male student expressed that we were brave enough to conduct the survey.

We finished conducting the survey under the frequent drops of the raining sky.

IV. ANALYSIS

All the 100 respondents revealed that they have seen porn videos for the last two years. Results show that 56% of the students have seen porn videos one to five months ago while only 13% admitted they saw porn two years ago. 

Thirty four percent of the respondents admitted they have watched more than 20 videos with sexual content for the past two years while 40% answered they only have seen one to five porn videos.

Rated X movies acquired 54% viewers while rated XXX has 34% viewers. Only twelve percent of the respondents choose rated XX.

According to the survey, 65% of the students have watched pornographic videos at the age 15 to 19 years old while 16% of the youths started seeing porn at the age of 15 and below. It only shows that most of the youths, boys and girls alike, are engaging into porn video viewing. 

The students divulged that the reasons why they are into these acts are curiosity (59%), educational purposes (40%), entertainment (23%), and pleasure (14%). Thus, this study shows that for the most part, youths are driven to see porn by curiosity.

Meanwhile, this study reveals that 55% of the adolescents watch videos with sexual content whenever there is porn video available in the market or in their houses. Others watch when bored (28%), lonely (13%), and depressed (4%).

 The research proves that 38% among the youths agree that they become matured by indulging in this activity while 7% strongly disagrees. Moreover, 34% have neutral thinking whether or not porn can make someone aggressive. Only 15% agreed that it is so. There is also 15% among the respondents who answered that videos with sexual contents can bring lust to the viewer while majority answered neutrally.

Forty eight percent strongly disagree that watching porn pushes them to commit sex. They don’t think that it can drive teens into committing sexual intercourse. Only 9% agreed and thinks so. 

Porn as making them more educated acquired 44% against 5% who strongly disagrees. Thus, they believe that it gives them more knowledge and learning.

Meanwhile, most of the fourth year students surveyed are neutral about this act making them malicious. Only 10% of them agreed on the matter.

Results of the survey show, however, that majority (36%) of the respondents agreed that pornographic videos can be one of the causes of sex before marriage although 76% refuted that they actually experience premarital sex. There is only 24% of them admitted.

V. CONCLUSION

In this 2011 study on the effects of porn video viewing, we verified that videos and movies with sex scenes is one of the causes of pre-marital sex among fourth year students of NORSU Main Campus I and II and most of the respondents agreed that it is so. 

Moreover, we found out that this activity can make them mature as well as educated.

VI. RECOMMENDATION

In order to stop or at least minimize the uncontrollable number of youths committing pre-marital sex, there is a need of the society to tackle issues that might be the reason of this. Certain studies must be conducted in order to find out the real reasons of sex before marriage. 

However, pornography must also be tackled the authorities like it finally demonized smoking. The government must take an action about this “widespread virus’ called pornography since it is against the biblical standards. We must keep pure by fleeing immorality but work to remove this sexual perversion.

Most countries are putting restrictions on this to at least 18 years old. Regardless of age, should porn be watched?

During my college years, in the middle of a family discussion about incidents of rape and its causes, a question popped up. So have you watch porn? Awkward but my answer was yes. Then my defensive reasons need not be asked but yeah I pointed out that everyone is doing it and besides I’m 18. It happened on one of our project prototyping activities when my classmates got bored and opens an R18 clip online. The experience wasn’t naughty, it’s more like a joke with everyone making funny comments about the scenes. Deep inside I know porn is bad period. Right then I know I just have to save me and make believe that my actions were alright. Was I acquited? In the eyes of my brothers and sister, maybe yes but not my mom. She said, “There you are reaching higher levels of education, might have distinguished black from white but failed to choose what is right”. And I was silenced.

So why in the soundest and purest self would you watch porn? Is it necessary? Does it add value to yourself? Or does it take something from you? When I look back to that time I first watched it, was I given the choice to watch or not to watch? The answer is yes. When evaluated carefully, we will always be given a choice. So when that time comes, will you or will you not watch porn?

Some time ago, something similar was happening. Hackers have stolen a million porn sites user information YouPorn and attack the nasty site’s database. This week, Digital Playground lost 73 thousand email addresses, user names, passwords, and approximately 40 thousand credit card numbers, including numbers CCV (Card Code Verification) following expiration. As reported by Arstechnica, Sunday (11/03/2012).

Reportedly, the perpetrators of these hackers identify themselves as members of “The Consortium” and seem to be affiliated with Lulzsec and Anonymous. Adult Video News (AVN) confirmed the attack site, Esek Esek and revealed that the hacker did not do dump or remove any data.

Some still are in the list match the name of Digital Playground’s customers. It is known that the hackers are not set out to destroy the porn sites, but the site’s security credentials are weak and poor.

The hackers also claim to have occupied four of the DP and the site server wiretapping conversations at the conference by listening to these companies. Meanwhile, on March 1, 2012, Digital Playground porn site formally belongs Manwin (adult entertainment company) located in Luxembourg.

In its official statement through AVN, Digital Playground reportedly revealed that these violations may have occurred in February, overseeing all aspects of management in this situation.

While many Americans are familiar with black slavery in the South during the 19th Century and its role in igniting the nation’s great Civil War, less attention has been paid to the black experience in northern cities such as New York, where so-called “freedmen” lived.

Now, a new book, “Black Gotham,” by University of Maryland Professor Carla Peterson, shines a light on their remarkable stories.

Much of the history of black 19th-Century New York has been lost, in part because it was eclipsed in the popular imagination by the saga of southern slavery. Additionally, mostly-white academic historians minimized the contributions of African-Americans. And no comprehensive archive of black life existed until the 20th Century, when the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture was established.

Peterson’s ancestors were distinguished members of the city’s black elite and she felt theirs was a powerful story that needed to be told. She spent 11 years researching and writing her book.

“Writing this book was very important to me,” says Peterson. “It was a journey of hard work, but also of love and passion.”

Led by free blacks such as clergyman Alexander Crummell, newspaper editor Charles Ray and businessman George Downing, members of New York’s black elite tried to establish themselves as full Americans, not merely as “Africans” or “coloreds” as black slaves had once been called and called themselves.

Like members of outsider groups before and since, this African-American elite considered education to be the key to full citizenship. They also embraced values of character and responsibility.

“A good, upright moral citizen, valuing temperance, a Protestant ethic of hard work, sobriety and all those kinds of inner values. Respectability then is the outward manifestation of character,” says Peterson. “It’s in your appearance, how you dress, how you comport yourself, especially when you’re out on the streets of New York, and especially with whites. No loud, boisterous behavior but being utterly respectable and respectful.”

‘Black Gotham’ explores the history and contributions of New York’s black elite during the 19th Century.

That didn’t mean the status quo went unchallenged. Peterson’s book describes salon-style meetings in the back of James McCune Smith’s pharmacy. Smith, who was one of antebellum New York’s most important black leaders, hosted lively debates about voting rights for blacks and the abolition of slavery.

Alliances with whites were often forged. And like white New Yorkers, many in “Black Gotham” also wanted to be rich – but success could be fleeting.

“You see black New Yorkers make tremendous gains and then lose. Gains in terms of entrepreneurship, finding a trade, finding a profession, setting down roots, buying property, and feeling they were at last becoming a genuine part of city life. They would refer to ‘color-phobia’ as ‘fast disappearing in our city.’ But then there would be a loss.”

Racial violence was also an issue. Peterson cites a riot in 1834, which began in a chapel where both black and white choirs were scheduled to rehearse at the same time.

“And the white choir went nuts. It was only a pretext, but a race riot broke out, and a lot of black property was damaged. Saint Philip’s Episcopal Church, which was the church of my family, was desecrated.”  

The Draft Riots of July 1863, during the height of the Civil War, were an especially low point in the history of black New York.  When President Abraham Lincoln instituted a military draft, many immigrants, especially the Irish, thought they were being asked to fight and perhaps to die in a war being waged for the benefit of blacks. Angry mobs set out to destroy the dwellings and businesses of the city’s prosperous African-Americans.

But there was also some goodwill between the races. Peterson’s great grandfather owned a pharmacy in a largely Irish neighborhood. He was known as a kind man who gave free medicine and clothes to the poor.

“So they came to see him as a pillar of the community. So at the time of the Draft Riots he was warned to leave. A group of white merchants in the area came to him and said ‘You’d better get out. Your pharmacy is going to be attacked.’ And he said, ‘As many men who are going to come and attack me, there will be as many who come to defend me.’ And that is exactly what happened. His Irish neighbors protected his pharmacy.”

Then as now, New York was an ethnic melting pot, and Peterson says many black New Yorkers saw themselves as citizens of the world. Her own ancestors had roots in England, Haiti, Jamaica, Venezuela, American Indian territory as well as Africa.

She points out that more than a century later, many American blacks still lack the educational and economic opportunities that the mainstream enjoys. But Peterson adds that she has been gratified to learn that many black groups are inspired by the struggles and incremental successes of 19th-Century “Black Gotham.”

Many processed food products today are sweetened with high fructose corn syrup.  But concerns that corn syrup might be contributing to obesity has led many food manufacturers to turn to organic brown rice syrup, believing it to be a healthier alternative to the high fructose corn syrup.  

Now, researchers say that brown rice syrup may be an unintended source of arsenic, a highly toxic metallic element that’s been shown to increase the risk of cancer when present in drinking water.

A researcher at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences at Dartmouth University in New Hampshire, Brian Jackson, says scientists were curious about the amount of arsenic in foods consumed by babies.

“Because of their low body weight, if they are exposed to arsenic, then they are exposed to a disproportionately high exposure rate on a high kilogram body weight basis,” Jackson said.

Jackson, who led the study, and colleagues randomly purchased more than a dozen baby formulas to test them for the presence of arsenic. He says almost all the formulas contained very low or trace amounts of arsenic, including those that had rice starch.

“And then I selected two other formulas that I found in a local supermarket, brought those back to the lab, tested them and they turned out to be 20 to 30 times higher than any of the other formulas that we tested. So when we get an anomalous result like that, we retested this and got the same results again.  And at that point I turned a jar around and looked at the label and the first ingredients in that label were organic brown rice syrup,” Jackson said.

Researchers found high levels of inorganic arsenic, the most toxic form, in soy based formula.

Jackson explains that growing rice needs a mineral in soil called silica.  But Jackson says arsenic is chemically a lot like silica, and the growing rice plant takes up both silica as well as arsenic, which is also in the ground. When the rice is fermented to make organic rice syrup, Jackson says the arsenic dissolves easily in the watery brew and becomes part of the syrup.

For this reason, Jackson urges parents to read the label on baby food products and to think twice before purchasing infant foods that contain organic rice syrup.

“I would recommend that.  Obviously the amount of arsenic –  it varies in rice depending upon the cultivar of rice, where the rice is grown — so you are going to get that same variation in brown rice syrups.  It’s true that rice as a grain takes up more arsenic than other grains,” Jackson said.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a statement saying it is not aware of any baby formulas that contain organic brown rice syrup.  An agency spokeswoman said FDA regulators are studying aresenic in all rice and rice products and could issue recalls after the report is completed later this year.
