Pro poor Globalization an approach and retrospect

Globalisation paved the ways for international flow of capital, trade and technologies, which have profound impact on international integration and worlds economy. . To respond to the emerging challenge an urgent need to enhance the reach and benefit of Globalisation especially to the poor, down trodden, underprivileged, excluded, class of the society is necessitated, so as to enable them to achieve minimum acceptable quality of life. Despite growth resulting from various measures of reform and restructure the fact is being realized that poverty, social and gender inequality and gap between rich and poor are increasing day by day world wide

Poor suffers from a large number of deprivation and one of the most important deprivation is lack of purchasing power even to obtain a minimum necessities of life. To tackle the crisis what matters, is the economic access by the poor to food and services and not the extra production of food and services.

In order to make globalization work for the poor to enable them to increase their income, the prerequisites to be worked out carefully are as given below.

Size of the poor population to be covered in phase.

Regional concentration with urban and rural bifurcation

Profile of the poor

Availability of natural resources, economic activities etc.

Based on the general spectrum of the scenarios particularly in the context of India, the thirst Area needed to be paid special attention includes the following, to take advantage of the globalization movement

Strengthening the foundation of rural economy

Modernizing Traditional industries

Strengthening rural economy

In the rural India the economic activities is deeply rooted in agricultural production, it increases direct employment on land and ensure the availability of food. Priority to commercial crops should be ensured. For generation of more livelihood and income through productivity and profitability in order to enable the poor the purchase their essential requirements, it is also needed to strengthen the on farm and off farm sector simultaneously, through intensified and diversified farming and through market driven micro enterprises

Eco farming by substituting the chemicals with biological inputs like bio-fertilizer and bio-pesticides will intern create jobs in villages

Investment in the regeneration of natural capital for much larger economic return and pursing a forestation of wasteland will go a long way in solving the purpose

Animal husbandry , Dairying , Poultry ,Forestry , Fisheries , and others agriculture based industries are to be promoted for quality production at par with international standard

Modern food processing industries should be setup proper training of workforce , developing the modern management skill coupled with advertisement and adopting sophisticated know how to compete world standard of quality products is proposed to be promoted. Foreign direct investment in this sector is sought.

Facilitating the urban informal sector to training , credit , better technology and creating supportive environment would have large impact on urban poor deprived from benefit of globalization.

Modernizing small scale industries

Indian industries are exposed to global and indigenous competitiveness. To meet this challenge industries needs modernization, up gradation of the competence of skill at par with world standard. With new investment pattern and by adopting new technologies through strong linkage with market quality goods in abundance are propose to be produced in manufacturing sector and the surplus are for export . To compete the foreign products in the market , necessary expertise , skill development of the work force employed in this sector is to be ensured through well tailored systematic design

India has the abundant resource potential needed for the industrial growth .It is needed only to orient the region in the utilization or augmentation of dormant resources available in planned way aimed for industrial development .The possibilities are innumerable ,all that we need a change of attitude and will to work hard to gear up the available resources of the region . For the scientific industrialization a comprehensive survey of the existing facilities available for industrial development would be required

It is also suggested to find out the new deposits of ores and minerals. For this intensive geological survey of the region should be extensively conducted, to meet the potential of industrial development. This will also hide out the mineral resources and industrial prospect for employment generation and lively hood of the poor of the region and simultaneously contribute to the national growth and development.

Virus is often relates to disease and illness such as AIDS and H1N1. However, the scope of impact is actually larger, and may effect a nation economically.

Economy of a country is very important as it is the factor that moves the country. From the economic aspect, viruses have contributed in many ways. For example, because of viruses many research and development has been done in order to understand even further about the viruses. Therefore, this research and development has opened up a new window of opportunity as they provide work in the area.

Not only in the research and development field, but it could be extended in many ways as research and development is a huge area and it has become an industry where a lot of task force is needed from the production line until the marketing force. Thus, lots of jobs opportunity is provided from the research and development field alone.

Furthermore, virus has also helped improved the economy in agriculture as viruses are also being used to fight against pests and also used as vectors in order to genetically modify the plant so as to produce better strain of the plants. Examples of viral vectors used are adenovirus, lentivirus and retrovirus. Thus, agriculture production can be increased and contribute to the economy strength.

It cannot be denied that from the economic aspects, there are disadvantages of virus. Although viruses are used in order to fight against pests and as vectors in plant biotechnology, they have also caused lots of damage in the agriculture industry. Many viruses of not only plants, but also animal viruses have brought millions of losses to a country.

A clear example is during the SARS outbreak a few years back. Millions of poultry were destroyed due to the virus spread in order to prevent further outbreak. Not only that, the foot and mouth disease caused by virus has caused many losses to farmers as they attack many domestic animals such as cows, goats, and sheeps. This has happened all over the world with billions of loss in estimation. Also, the iconic plant tobacco mosaic virus and other plant viruses has caused an estimated US$60 billion loss in crop yields worldwide each year.

Other disadvantage of virus in the economic aspect is that many economic resources had been wasted in the research and development area of virus especially in the production of vaccines against these viruses. These economic resources that could have mount up to hundreds of billions could instead be used in other important area such as education and public amenities and not forgetting to fight poverty in certain country.

These areas are also very important as they serve the people who are the backbone of the country. Besides that, virus of course has caused many diseases to lots of people who are considered work labor and are very valuable resources to a nation. Thus, an outbreak of virus would cause a huge loss of nation resource.

An article about factory farming and its implications on health.

What is factory farming?

It is the rearing of animals like cattle, poultry and other farm animals in closed buildings. The animals do not have space to move about. They are not left out to graze. The animals are treated cruelly and are numbered instead of named. These animals are given high doses of antibiotic injections which are harmful also for the people who consume the dairy products.

The animal waste is a huge problem. Lack of space leads to improper disposal and thus causes diseases like swine flu, bird flu, etc;. Transportation between farms can cause diseases to spread easily. In the past few years, so many people have died due to these diseases which are actually brought about by inhuman practices.

People should try to buy local farm produce or grow their own poultry if it is possible. People can also demand products which are grown on natural farms. It may be costly, but at least the health will not be at stake.

Eliminate poultry

If you haven’t been eating a vegetarian diet for years, and want to make the shift, it’s best to do so gradually, in stages. A good way to start is to eliminate red meat and substitute fish or poultry for the red meat you’ve been eating. While it’s not eating more vegetarian, you’re at least eliminating the biggest offender in disease-enhancing foods, red meat.

After you’ve successfully eliminated red meat, then start reducing the amount of poultry you eat. While it’s not as bad for you as red meat, because it’s not as high in fat, it’s still meat that’s been raised on a farm in terrible, cramped and inhumane conditions. Poultry is so laden with growth hormones and antibiotics that’s it’s nothing like a chicken or turkey that we might have hunted for food centuries ago. Chickens are raised in horrible conditions, overfed and then slaughtered. In the grand scheme of things, it’s just as detrimental to our physical and spiritual health as eating red meat. It’s also fairly easy to eliminate poultry from our diets because let’s face it – it’s like eating wood pulp, it’s so tasteless. All the antibiotics and abnormal living conditions have processed any natural flavor that poultry ever had in the first place.

Add more fish and seafood, if you’re not quite ready to replace poultry with grains and vegetables and legumes yet. While there is risk in eating fish and seafood, because of the high levels of mercury they contain, it’s a better alternative to poultry and red meat. This may be as far as you ever get in moving towards vegetarianism, or at least eliminating meat from your diet. Give yourself time to get used to this. You won’t miss poultry for a minute. We usually eat chicken and chicken breasts because it’s lower in fat and calories, but it’s also lower in any kind of nutritional value. When we’re not getting essential proteins and vitamins, we’re still starving our bodies, regardless of how healthy we think we’re being. Eliminating poultry is one of the most positive steps you can take towards a healthy diet and a healthy planet.

Does having less money effect our ethics when in the supermarket?

We’ve all done it, walked into the supermarket, done the majority of our shopping and reached the egg aisle. We’ve seen the offers, the cheap prices and gone to pick up some eggs only to realise that they are from caged hens. If you are like me then you will hastily shove them back on the shelf with a feeling of disgust and go for the slightly more expensive free range eggs.

In this time where people are struggling for money, losing their jobs and cutting back on everything can we really start buying anything other than free range just to save a few pennies? I’m sure that if you bought eggs from caged hens every week for a year then the savings would certainly mount up but is it worth it when your mind trickles back to what it actually means to be a caged hen.

The world would be a better place if free range eggs were the cheaper option however, they are not and I’ve been through the financial difficulty, getting made redundant, cutting back and yet when I go into the supermarket I can’t for the life of me bear to pick up any food other than free range food. Of course this has put strain on my budgeting but there are so many other ways to cut back, buy supermarket value crisps instead of the brand name ones. You probably should be eating apples in stead of crisps anyway.

Keep picking up those free range foods and feel proud that even in these times you are making a difference and taking a stand against battery farms every where.

In 1996, ADM was the subject of the largest price-fixing investigation in history.

In 1902, George A. Archer and John W. Daniels began a linseed crushing business. In 1923, Archer-Daniels Linseed Company acquired Midland Linseed Products Company to form Archer-Daniels-Midland (ADM) Company. Today, ADMbills itself as the “supermarket to the world.” ADM is in the business of procuring, transporting, storing, processing, and merchandising agricultural commodities and related products. Some of ADM’s major divisions include corn processing, oils, produce, and grains. With processing plants on four continents and in forty-three countries, ADM is one of the largest transnational corporations operating in the agrifood sector.

ADM operated several price-fixing schemes that cost consumers millions through inflated prices for soft drinks, detergents, poultry, and many other products. Senior executives were indicted on criminal charges for engaging in price-fixing in the international lysine market. Lysine is one of the twenty amino acids normally found in proteins. It is an essential amino acid-that is, the human body cannot make it from other substances. A deficiency in lysine can result in a deficiency in niacin (a B vitamin). Therefore, lysine has emerged as one of the most widely used feed supplements worldwide.

ADM and four other companies, two each from Japan (Kyowa Hakko and Ajinomoto) and Korea (Sewon and Cheil Jedang Ltd.), produced lysine for the global market. Instead of competing with each other, two executives at ADM talked competitors into forming an “amino acids association.” The five companies agreed among themselves how much to charge their customers for lysine and how much each producer was permitted to sell annually. These agreements are illegal under U.S. antitrust laws as well as similar laws in many other countries. The businessmen within these five companies knew that they were doing was criminal. They did everything possible to keep the price-fixing conversations and meetings secret. An FBI informant, Mark Whitacre, former president of ADM’s bioproducts division, secretly made audio and video tapes of ADM meetings over the course of a two-and-a-half-year period. Michael Andreas, vice-chairman; Terrance Wilson, ADM executive; and Whitacre were each fined $350,000. Ironically, Whitacre, who pleaded guilty in 1997 to money laundering and tax fraud, received a much more severe sentence than those he exposed.

He was sentenced to nine years in prison, whereas Andreas was sentenced to three years in prison and Wilson received a 30-month sentence following appeals to the Supreme Court. Whitacre also had to pay $11.4 million in restitution to ADM and was sentenced to serve 30 months for price-fixing on top of his 9-year sentence for fraud. ADM was fined $100 million, the largest antitrust fine ever. ADM also paid $400 million to settle a class-action antitrust suit. Neither the CEO nor the president of ADM was pursued criminally. Judge Blanche Manning ruled that Whitacre was in charge of the price-fixing conspiracy, but the government’s investigation identified over forty-nine executives who had participated in the price-fixing conspiracy. The Japanese and Korean corporations were sentenced to pay fines ranging from $1.25 million to $10 million. Three executives from the Japanese and Korean corporations were sentenced to pay fines ranging from $50,000 to $75,000.

Is there really no alternative to veganism? The facts and critically examines common arguments in favor of veganism.

I’m often frustrated by the claims of vegans about meat and am further appalled by their bad logic. Often vegans fail to acknowledge multiple causes and solutions to the issues they present, simplifying their logic to eating meat makes you sick, and not eating meat solves the problems. Without attacking Veganism itself, I’ll point out some of gaps in logic below:

Eating meat is bad for you

This is a miserable argument because it refuses to take into account American over-eating. Yes, if people stuff their faces with huge, frequent portions of meat, they will have horrible problems with their organ systems, including cholesterol increases and rising body fat percentages. If people eat modest portions of meat once every other day, there are no horrible health impacts and you have access to a fantastic source of raw materials necessary for your body. Except for fish. Fish is great for you. Eat lots of fish. Fish is still a form of meat.

The counterargument to this is claiming that eating meat dumps massive amounts of harmful chemicals, antibiotics, and even concentrated amounts of chemicals into your body. This is typically paired with slideshows of animals in horrible conditions, fifteen to a cage in a room full of five hundred cages, all full of chickens with two heads. Everyone seems to recognize this, but I’ll give you a hint. The solution is not veganism.

If you want to combat or even just avoid the mass farming of meat (including fish farms), buy free-range and organic meat. Animals raised by the standards of these two labels grow up in much better conditions and are not stuffed full of growth hormones and antibiotics. The price tag will help you keep in step with the portions suggested above. The meat tastes better, it’s much healthier, and you are supporting a fight against polluted meat raised in miserable conditions. Better than depriving the growing industry from a source of income by not eating meat at all.

This is a huge issue, especially when it comes to fish, as fish farming programs typically do not address the dangerous buildup of chemicals in their stocks. Buying wild fish will help encourage the strength of those programs and their ability to ensure the continued protection of their territories. Clean waters, for example, are necessary for the raising of healthy fish. Supporting the budding wild fish industry will both encourage competitors to clean up their acts and may even begin the expansion of the industry into over fished areas. Wouldn’t it be great if a company decided to clean up an area like the Chesapeake Bay for the purpose of raising a healthy fish and shellfish population? Supporting the wild fish industry will ultimately help rejuvenate rich coastal areas, under the protection of companies with the health of the area in the interests of their consumers.

Also, if the chemical/antibiotics /hormone issue is the reason you switched to veganism, you’d better buy organic plants. Otherwise, you’re still likely to have pesticides and antibiotics dumped into your system, as well as the issue of genetically modified organisms to confront.

The Doozy

Eating meat is immoral and/or unnatural. What a terrible argument to put on a brochure. The argument from immorality is underplayed by vegans- it would certainly take up the entire brochure, and follows a long train of logic that many people would find conflict with. In short, most mainstream modern religions don’t support the argument from veganism.

The argument from unnaturalism has always bugged me. At eight, I would open my mouth and point frantically at my canine teeth in response. Humans are omnivores. Meat tastes particularly good to us because it helped us to keep our populations high, as it is a source of much sought after fats, proteins and certain vitamins. You just couldn’t get that from plants when we were evolving. We’re conditioned to eat meat by our very genetics. And you know what we ate most of the time? That’s right. Plants. We ate plants most of the time, supplemented by scavenged meat, at a rate above our ancestors, the chimpanzees. Probably in the proportions suggested in part one. And it kept us alive.

In Short

The right types of meat, in the right proportions, are a fantastic asset to your health. Humans have been conditioned by the process of evolution to benefit from meat in these proportions. If you want to make a difference in the meat industry, don’t boycott it. Support the industries that address your concerns, and you’ll help them grow to confront the industries to which you are opposed.
