When Star Wars was released in 1977, it became a massive sci-fi hit, and has so far amassed a staggering $775 million in box office takings throughout the world. 

In addition to introducing us to the wonderful, colourful characters, it also introduced us to Jedi Knights and Masters, and their use of the Force. 

Surprisingly it appears that the concept of being a Jedi, is what has secured the films longevity with success and popularity.  There are many individuals who believe in the principals of being a Jedi, and that the Force really does exist.  Their belief in the Force and being a real Jedi, was so strong, that many tried to have Jediism, recognised as a religion.

Whilst Jediism, unfortunately did not become recognised as a religion, I believe that it is possible to learn some of the basic skills associated with being a Jedi and their use of the Force.

Embracing The Force

The Force appears to be based on similar principles of that of Eastern religions such as Taoism & Buddhism.  Eastern religions refer to Qi, Ki or Chi, which, is an invisible, universal life energy (just like the Force).  By harnessing the power of Qi, Ki or Chi, it is believed that you will be able to heal yourself or others or apply the principal to martial arts to greater effect for attack or defence.

Jedi Mind Tricks

A very memorable part of the Star Wars movie was where Obi Wan used a Jedi mind trick, to get past the Stormtroopers stating “these aren’t the droids you are looking for”.   He also advised “the Force can have an influence on the weak minded.”

Jedi mind tricks can be likened to hypnosis, whereby planting subtle suggestions or “seeds” of information into someone’s mind, can help influence or manipulate that person to your way of thinking.

A lot of people make the point that people who dress up or hide behind a costume are either lacking in self confidence or not happy with themselves. I’m not endorsing pathological, chronic costume-wearing, just advocating the fun of mixing up the routine and escaping reality for a little bit. Also, dressing up allows you to experience the company or someone who you’ll never meet in the comfort and safety of your own home. Like if you have a thing for Batman, you can just talk your boyfriend into wearing the outfit And if you happen to be wearing a Joker costume, where’s the harm?

Sorry if I deeply disturbed anyone with that last example, it’s a subject close to my heart. That may not be your fantasy, but everyone has then and it’s healthy to explore them. If you want to experience something different, out of the realm of the ordinary, them you can – safely.

I also believe that the outfits we choose to dress up in say a lot about ourselves. That’s why halloween is such a great night, you find out a lot about your friends. There’ll always be hoardes of young women in skin-tight cat outfits (which I’m not complaining about by the way) but I love seeing really unique outfits.

Essentially, role playing is a fun and exciting option which is open to all of us to expand our realm of experience outside the ordinary; escape the square we live in every day - just for a little while.
