Summary of "Nothing Bad Intended: Child Discipline, Punishment and Survival in a Shantytown in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil", Donna Goldstein pg 389-415.

Goldstein, Donna

1998 Nothing Bad Intended: Child Discipline, Punishment and Survival in a Shantytown in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In Small wars : the cultural politics of childhood. N. Scheper-Hughes and C.F. Sargent, eds. Pp. 389-415. Berkeley: University of California Press.

In this reading, Donna Goldstein looks at poverty differently than the other authors have so far; she does not research street children, but looks into the lives of children living in poor matrifocal households. She begins by saying that she will talk about a poor Brazilian family and about their relations with each other and with others in order to explain how childhood and childhood discipline are socially and economically contructed. Golstein argues that childhood is lived and experienced differently by different classes in Brazil. Economic and social realities for those who are poor are different than they are for the upper classes, so childhood and discipline mean different things. Childhood is shortened for the poor. Poor mothers are able to rationalize cruel punishments because raising tough children becomes a necessity for their survival. They teach their children to behave in human and adult ways, and therefore are taking care of them; mothers’ actions make sense in context of their situations. However, attempts to raise children into strong adults also ensures that the children will be trapped in the lowest class. Favela-living is about survival of the fittest.

At one point, Goldstein mentions that, to poor mothers, upper- and middle-class children can be loved because they are helpless and spoiled, while poor children are forced to become adults early on in order to survive. Favelados working for upper class individuals often prefer the employer’s children to their own children, and Goldstein talks about this as a relationship between the colonizer and the colonized. I found it very interesting that Goldstein connected what we had learned about in a previous unit about the lasting affects of colonialization to the issue of poverty and violence in Brazil.

Along with their growth, children begin to understand the relationship between actions and consequences. At this time you can begin to communicate the basic rules that apply in the family / your home.
Explain to them what you expect of them before you punish them because of an error. For example, the first time your toddler to use colored pencils / crayons to redecorate the walls in the living room, tell him why you are not allowed and what will happen if he did it again, for example: it should help to clear the wall and are not allowed crayons to play during the day. If the act was repeated again, remind him that just used crayon on paper, and apply the consequences of your “promise”.
The earlier you apply it, the better the results. Although it is sometimes easier for parents to ignore the good behavior of children who do not follow the agreement or not punishment, it can give a bad perception of the child. Consistency is the key to effective discipline. It is important for parents to decide together as a couple what is to be at home and obey the rules.
If you are done to determine what kind of behavior should be punished, do not forget to give awards for good behavior. Do not underestimate the effect of praise you because discipline is not only punishment but also appreciate good behavior. For example: say that you are proud of your son for wanting to share a toy. Often this means is more effective than punishing a child for behavior that is not willing to share. And when you want to praise, do not just say. ”Good job!”
If your child does not continue their good behavior, then try to create a table or chart that is equipped with a column for each day of the week. Determine how many times he made a mistake until the end shall be put to good behavior, or how many times have to do to get a reward / prize. Attach a table or chart on the refrigerator door and record the behavior every day. This will give you and your child’s certainly a clear picture of your child’s developmental behavior. Once the system is able to walk, do not forget to praise him because it can control his emotions and improve stubbornness.
Timeouts can also be applied to children at this age. Determine the place of execution timeout that is free from interference and that can make your child reflect on his actions.Do not forget to consider the time / duration of the execution timeout. The experts indicated that 1 minute represent your child’s age. Have also stated that the timeout is given to your child become more calm.
It’s important to explain to children what should / well done, not just stating what is wrong behavior.

A random word.

I choose the word spanking because it is word that came up when I looked at top searchers.

Always spank with love.

Spanking is one of the most enjoyable activities in the BDSM community. I personally get spanked at least twice a week.

I have noticed that spanking is a search term that gets me a lot of views as a matter of fact the article that ha given me the most views is an article about spanking.

My article about spanking therapy has garnered over 1000 views. This is a good amount of views. I wrote that article when I had a family member that was thinking about getting spanking therapy. This person did not recieve spanking therapy. I however did recieve some and t helped me deal with a bout of depression. I still get spanked about once a month for therapuetic purposes.

Happy spanking!

The purpose of Triond is to get as many views as possible the more views you get the more money you will earn. So this article was good in principal. The more articles you have the greater your odds of recieving views are. I am nearing 1000 articles. There was a period of time where I forgot that Triond existed. Now I plan on trying to submit at least 14 articles a week. This will help me get my earnings back up. The one thing that I need to do is submit articles that are not time sensitive but I aslo need to submit articles in a timley manner about current events.

Encouraging children to always tell the truth.

For some children, depending on their age, lying to a parent can range from small fibs over who dropped the eggs on the floor and did not clean up, to big carbuncles where money has gone missing in the house and no one knows anything about it. Usually someone knows; the person who took it. In any event, a three year old knows when he tells a lie that he is doing wrong and usually the lie is to escape punishment. As he grows older and becomes more developed he may discover that telling a lie has advantages and that by telling them he not only gets what he wants, but someone else gets the blame for what he’s done. The number one disadvantage for telling a lie is that you forget what you lied about previously, and you get caught up in your own lies.

How to handle continuous and unnecessary lying

· Set strict rules with consequences for anyone stealing money from the kitty, and list the punishment which can range from a two-hour timeout to no allowance for that week. When the child is found lying, carry out the punishment and don’t veer from it. Children have to know that you mean what you say and know that there will be consequences. If you don’t act on it they will take you for granted and not pay much attention the next time you chastize them. Punishment for a toddler need not be anything greater than a two minute timeout in his room.

· As a child grows older and is more developed you can start to reason with him. Something like, “if you tell mummy a lie, I will not know when you are telling the truth and I won’t believe you again even though it might be the truth.”

· Punishment does not mean sending him for a two minute timeout where he can have the remote control to the television set. It will in fact be a reward where he can watch his own program in peace.

· Encourage a child to always tell the truth, especially when he owns up to the infraction. Always punish and reward a child without threatening that you will tell his father. That sets the father up as the bad guy.

· Don’t become frustrated and spank. Cutting into his playtime or banning him from watching television is far more effective. Don’t label your child as a liar, but work with him to improve.

Why Punishment Give to Children in Need?

Every parent can say there is not never punish their children. Within certain limits, the punishment to a child could become mandatory, and within certain limits, the punishment is not allowed. The purpose of punishment so that children can become better, more advanced, more polite and more useful for friends and the environment in which the child resides. Not a punishment that will make children worse off, sad, or even depression.

Why the penalty should be given to children? There are several reasons why the sentence should be given to an innocent child, such as:

1. That children do not repeat the same events

At a time when children make mistakes, maybe we can memakluminya and provide understanding, but if repeatedly make the same mistake then as parents we can be angry to see such behavior. In this case the penalty is a deterrent intended to children (kapok) to make the mistake of the same nature.

2. Can take the lessons and wisdom

However, the error would make the child could take a lesson about the events that it faces. By administering punishment to the child, it is expected he will be cautious at the same time if he can socialize at the same time a lack of good deeds should not be carried out to friends, relatives, or others, it means indicates that the child is able to take lessons on mistakes that .

3. Consistency An Agreement

A good punishment is essentially a consequence of the agreement we made with the child. Sentence meaning we give to children we must understand that punishment is not to satisfy our passions and emotions when children make mistakes, and our emotions wear off after it ended the punishment that we give to children.

So the punishment should be given to children because it is basically sentencing the child is expected to be influential in his life, every child will be aware that any action that he did will be held accountable.

When some people do bad or hurt others and get caught, they may reply the devil made me do it.

So they keep attacking you and doing things that they know will hurt you. You go in your room and cry and punch the walls wondering will the attacks when end. How long will it go on? You may think what are they thinking. Doe sit really make since to harass someone and mess with them everyday? Misery is so deep within people who just continue to hurt others. When you call them out they run scared and come up with the devil made me do it excuse.

The devil is getting so much credit for evil doing. He sits and laughs at us and his thankful that he did not have to put in all the hard work. You find yourself getting upset because no matter how much you cry , shout and plead for them to stop they just keep going. Perhaps they have a personality disorder and are exposed to hate and want you to feel what they feel. The fire burns in their soul and their time is spent finding new ways to attack you.

They have found something new to mess with you about. You try going back and fourth trying to keep your belongings safe but again it happens. You ask people for help but they either won’t or can not. Your thoughts are cluttered with anger and you are wondering how could people do acts of evil and get away with it. They really aren’t getting away because they are drowning in misery and hate. They want to hurt you but are only hurting themselves. So do not despair because they are being judged, not by you but by the King. He will make sure that there is punishment. They are to stupid to repent and to proud to admit that they are sorry.

Prisons are referred as ‘Correctional Centers’ in many nations but instead of reforming a prisoner and integrating him or her back to the mainstream of life it has become a place of suffering and breeding grounds for criminals in various nations across the world.

Prisons are also referred as ‘Correctional Centers’ in some countries like the U.S., as the general idea is that a prison term is not only a punishment for the crimes committed by an individual and will act as a deterrent for impending criminals but a prison term will also help in reforming a person from his or her evil status that led to the jail term in the first place, through acts of penance in form of punishment endured because of imposed restrictions on freedom and free movement and other acts of constructive service performed in the jail.

If the idea was implemented properly then it would have made better persons out of hardened criminals, but sadly, the conditions prevailing in many so-called ‘Correctional Centers’ around the world are really pathetic and they are actually breeding grounds for creating new criminals rather than reforming the bad ones.

There are countless prisons in Latin America, South-east Asia, Africa and other parts of the world that to describe in one word is a ‘Living Hell’! Inmates are made to live there in unthinkable and inhuman conditions, at times worse than even animals in small dingy cells, taking away the most basic human right of an individual person that is provided to the worst of criminals even by the “United Nations Declaration of Human Rights”. In such places not only people caught for petty crimes or under trials are herded into cells with hardened criminals, but also there is nobody to protect them from being beaten up, sexually assaulted or even killed by the more-seasoned offenders.

Countless people around the world rot in such jails without even a single trial for years, as there were none to fight their cases, until their cases come to the notice of any good NGO, fighting for the cause of such abandoned people. Many of them are even innocent and appear to have been framed by a corrupt system. Officials of such jails are mostly corrupt and at many times they work in cahoots with mafias and crime syndicates, besides being exploiters of the inmates.

In such prisons those who are physically tough, manipulative and are easily able to get into the good book of the officials by helping them carry on their depraved actions within the jail premises get lots of advantages and privileges from the authorities for their allegiance, including quality food, drugs, alcohol, gadgets, etc…for others it’s a life of terrible suffering with little food or no food.

I don’t think any average normal person would come out of such a jail reformed ever? If someone survives the full-term then it would take him or her much longer in recovering from the traumatic experiences of such a prison. Many others begin their journey of crime from these very places, as conforming appears the easy way out. History is testimony to the fact of how juvenile delinquents or first time offenders have been converted to hardened criminals by rubbing shoulders with their likes.

Amid all the darkness there is also a ray of light and all is not lost. There are honest and dedicated officers trying their best to bring about positive changes and programs within the jail premises that would help the convicts find better ways of integrating into the mainstream once they finish their jail term. Innumerable prisoners have acquired vocational training courses from such unique prison campuses and even got master degrees on various subjects. I have even read about jails where some companies were ready to hold campus interviews after initial hesitancy, for their prospective new recruits and ultimately found some fresh new talents and the concerned persons got good paying high-skilled jobs after their release.

These positive stories inspire us and will continue to do so, but it cannot take away the focus from the vast darkness that prevails in the countless jails across the world. So naturally the obvious question that arises out of all this is that, does prisons or ‘Correctional Centers’ actually create criminals rather than reforming them? Is it a place where innocents and minor offenders are persecuted while the big bad boys get away? Well the ones I mentioned above certainly creates such an atmosphere. It is time for the ‘United Nations Human Rights Council’ to pull-up the nations that allow such horror penitentiaries to function? It is a shame for humanity!

The Scarlet Letter is a book about sin, punishment, and the hope of redemption. The book is about the life in colonial Boston of Hester Prynne, Her husband Roger Chillingworth, and Hester’s lover Arthur Dimmesdale. However, Hester Prynne throughout the whole novel remains the greatest sinner of all the characters because of her continual sin and lies for purely self-gain.

Hester is the greatest sinner in The Scarlet Letter because when it comes to those that really matter in her life she would rather have them continue their sins of adultery and hatred. She is the origin of pain for all the other characters in the story; her sin’s punishment is also carried out in others and causes others to sin. She lies for Roger and this shows that she is also okay with her sin and his sin. “Breathe not the secret, above all, to the man thou wettest of…’Swear it!’ rejoined he. And she took the oath. (71)” Hester continues to keep this secret even after it is revealed that it is doing more harm to Dimmesdale, the one she loves, than the possible good that keeping the secret is doing for her. She uses Roger Chillingworth’s sin as a cover for herself throughout the story. The life of Chillingworth begins to revolve around torturing pastor Dimmesdale; this is because of Hester and Hester not revealing and continuing her charade over who she committed adultery with, Her giving into temptation and committing adultery with Dimmesdale, and her failure to disclose the true identity of Roger Chillingworth to Arthur Dimmesdale.

Image via Wikipedia

Hester also is okay with her habitual sin, her mindset is that when judgment day comes she and Dimmesdale will be able to stand together. Hester wants to keep living in sin with the pastor Dimmesdale and not have him admit his sin to the people of Boston, where they live. Hester continually denies how bad her sin actually is, Hester tells herself that Roger Chillingworth’s sin is actually worse. Hester tries to vilify her sin and say that it is not very bad. “Hester felt that the sacrifice of the clergyman’s good name, and death itself, as she had already told Roger Chillingworth, would have been infinitely preferable to the alternative which she had taken upon herself to choose (183).” This shows that Hester will not even admit that her punishment publicly was less painful then the punishment of a secret like the one carried by Arthur Dimmesdale. Hester shows that she is fine with the idea of letting anyone sin and carry secrets as long as it benefits her.

Lastly, Hester does not remorse her sin and continually lies of her scarlet letter’s nature so she does not have to face guilt brought on by others. Hester continues to protect herself by covering up the name of her partner in adultery, the true identity of Roger Chillingworth and forces herself to become an outsider in the town of Boston. “She had wandered, without rule or guidance, in a moral wilderness… The scarlet letter was her passport into regions where other women dared not tread. Shame, Despair, Solitude! These had been her teachers…” (189). Hester isolates herself so she does not have to deal with the remorse brought on by onlookers. This shows that Hester is constantly despaired even after the townspeople of Boston start to accept her and do not see her A mean Adultery as much as it means Able. Hester will not even tell her own daughter, Pearl, the true nature of the A. “’Mother,’ said she, ‘what does the scarlet letter mean?’… ‘Hold thy tongue, naughty child!’…’do not tease me; else I shall put thee into the dark closet (171)!” The fact that Hester will not even tell her daughter about the A shows how Hester continues to look out for only herself and gains by not losing the respect of Pearl in this instance. This all shows that Hester would rather not tell about the nature or lie about the nature of the letter then face the true nature of her sin and the guilt brought on by others.

Hester is the greatest sinner in the Scarlet Letter. Her deception and contortion of the truth lead to continual deception of even the people she loves makes her the cause of others sin, punishment, and torture. Hester causes so much unnecessary pain for those around her. Hester is the greatest sinner for she shows little if any remorse for her sin. She will not even tell her daughter, Pearl, the true nature of the A even though Pearl is the embodiment of the A and the reason Hester wears it. Hester sins only out of pleasure, self-gain, and the hope falsely backed up and associated with more sin.
