This is, to me, a more poetic version of the quote that Jaime Escalante made famous in the movie Stand and Deliver “All we need is ganas (desire)”. While it is possible to force people to do things, it is better to get them to want to do things. If you use force, then people learn that force is useful; if you use force, then when the force is removed, the action stops. If you use force, you sow resentment. But if you make people want to do something, it becomes hard to stop them.

And one of the best ways to get people to want to do something is to get them to dream, to long for something. Once that happens, it becomes hard to stop them. Instead of sowing resentment, you sow desire. Instead of grudgingly doing what you want, people become eager to do it – and they become better at it, as well.

Antoine du Saint Exupery knew this; many others know it as well. But Saint Exupery said it so beautifully!

The author of the quote

Antoine du Saint Exupery was born on June 29, 1900 and died on July 31, 1944. He is probably best known as the author of The Little Prince, a truly wonderful book that all should read. But Saint Exupery also wrote many other books. In addition, he was a successful commercial aviator prior to World War II and a member of the French air force in the war (initially with the official French force, later with the Free French). His last flight disappeard in June, 1944 and he is presumed to have died at that time.
