It was on Dec. 8, 1911, that a five man Norwegian led by Roald Amundsen, having been sledding south toward to the South Pole for just over six weeks realized that their goal was in sight. With good going and high spirits, they knew that they were close to hoisting the Norwegian flag over the South Pole, and becoming the first to reach that goal.

Where Scott and his ill-fated team were experiencing real problems, only 200 miles further south, Amundsen and his group were writing of very good conditions indeed, and by the evening of the 13th, they were camped only 15 miles from the Pole.

Amundsen wrote that he had, that night, felt the same things he could remember feeling as a little boy on Christmas Eve night. Next morning, they all ate breakfast quickly, were out of the tent fast, fearing all the while that Scott had got there first, as they forged doggedly onwards.

It was on December 14th, at 3 P.M. that Amundsen and his team became the first to reach the South Pole, even though to begin with it had been the North Pole the Norwegian had been drawn to, so that as he celebrated at the south pole, he will have been thinking about the north.

His life-time ambition had been achieved, even though he was honest enough to admit that he found himself in a position diametrically opposed position to his original goal centred around the North Pole, though his team did allow themselves celebration slices of seal meat for dinner, having joyously planted the Norwegian flag.

There was undoubtedly a fierce sense of national pride and affection as the flag unfurled itself, and waved over the Pole, an historic event in which this desolate spot had finally been conquered by man. Amundsen and his companions stayed in the area for several more days, expecting Scott to arrive but he never did.

The team spent time measuring, taking records of distances, and otherwise ensuring that they had proof of having reached the South Pole. Once finished, they erected a small tent beside the flag, in which they placed a letter for King Haakon along with other items, before heading homewards, to be feted for their incredible achievement all around the world, while the unfortunate Scott party were sadly mourned.

In most states, if someone commits a crime when under 18, that person is termed a juvenile delinquent and is dealt with by the legal system differently from an adult. But in some states, the age limit is 17 or just 16. Juvenile courts usually use different terminology from that used in adult courts.

Should juvenile records of teens be sealed? (Wikipedia image)

A juvenile record can have a significant impact on later life. If a convicted juvenile delinquent applies when an adult for a job, the prospective employer on discovering the applicant’s criminal background might well deny the application. Applications to college and for a professional driver’s license can also be affected adversely by a juvenile record.

Many people with juvenile records believe that once they reach adulthood these are automatically erased. In some cases, this may be so, but usually a petition must be filed with the juvenile court where the proceedings were conducted in order for the records to be sealed. This is also termed expunging, which means that the records will not be available to the public. Sometimes, the records are destroyed. A petitioner must either be legally defined as an adult or a certain number of years must have passed since his last conviction. Different states have their own laws concerning who is eligible to file such a petition.

When the record of a former juvenile delinquent is sealed or destroyed, this usually leaves the former juvenile offender free to legally answer in the negative when asked whether he has ever been in trouble with the law. This is because the offense is deemed to never have occurred. This is intended to protect youthful offenders from the lingering effects of having a criminal past so they can start life afresh with a clean slate.

But if the juvenile offender was convicted for a serious offense, such as murder, assault, assault with a deadly weapon, arson, and similar offenses, the offender’s records may not be sealable. These are offenses that are grave enough for the juvenile offender to be automatically tried as an adult. Often, such information cannot be withheld from the public in future if the state determines that it exposes a tendency in the subject towards such behavior thus serving as a possible indicator of future actions.

Even with sealed records, some information may still be accessible to certain parties, law enforcement for example, conducting background checks.

A former juvenile offender who desires that his criminal record be expunged should consult a competent attorney to ascertain what laws pertain in the petitioner’s particular state. In many cases, especially where the offenses committed are relatively minor, this can be accomplished successfully. But even with the more serious offenses, there have reportedly been cases where attorneys were able to have juvenile records sealed.

Image via Wikipedia

I wrote about Florence Ballard’s daughters still living in Detroit and their almost sad and ghoulish existence. They were on Welfare, the house was amazingly close to Hitsville USA (later Motown) and the fact that they were far too young to remember their mother. I was very candid in my approach to the Interview with her daughters and the way the movie Dream Girls had continued to exploit the memory of Florence Ballard without calling it by name and yet when Jennifer Hudson dedicated her Golden Globe for the Florence Ballard type role, to the memory of Ms. Ballard, I thought it was a cheap way of the Producers and Movie Makers saying things they AIN’T saying. I know that if we search for copyright infringements we would find out that unless these Dream Girl plays and movies call themselves even semi-biographical works of the Supremes, nothing should be ‘dedicated’ to someone that the dedicator was told to dedicate without any knowledge of Ms. Ballard’s real life.

Cover of Dreamgirls (Full Screen Edition)

Well, the show Unsung opened my eyes to a lot of things that I suspected; Florence Ballard was a good person, a complicated person (as many of us are) but she wasn’t quite the victim, even though her life spun out of control to a large degree. The truth is, some people can hang in show business and some cannot. People from Motown, including her sister and a cousin, told the story like it was and that included interviews and comments with Mary Wilson and other Motown personnel at the time. Florence formed the group called the Primettes after being propositioned by the Primes for a sister group. She called on her friend Mary Wilson who lived in the Brewster Projects with her, and also a girl named Betty and asked Mary if Diane (Diana Ross and also a resident of the Brewster Projects) would like to join as well. Like young, aspiring, attractive and talented girls, they were totally geered up to go! They were hits a the Sock Hops and performed for local shows. But during that time, something happened to Florence. She was a trusting teenager who accepted a ride from a guy or guys, thinking that they were her relative’s friends. She was raped and withdrew from her friends, didn’t call and didn’t avail herself. When she did call, her friends were true blue and clung to her side wanting to know who did this to their friend but Florence never told. In some ways, with her lovable fans and her cute one liners during the group, it was obvious that she could have some mood swings. Many attributed this rape to her mood swings.

The girls were told to come back when they finished high school by Mr. Gordy when they wanted to sign up with Hitsville, but they were so focused and so bent on becoming a successful group, they started hanging around Hitsville, flirting with the guys, getting to know people, performing little light duties like secretarial work, running errands. When they were re-named the Supremes, none of the girls liked the name and Diane said that it sounded like a ‘Guy Group’s name’. It was all so very cute. They were called the “No Hit Supremes” for a long time again but this didn’t stop their enthusiasm after they got signed after finishing high school. Their first song “Where Did Out Love Go” which was a mainstream success, wasn’t liked by any of the girls and had been rejected by the Popular Group, The Marvelettes. But this song catapulted them into stardom.

Okay, moving right along, The Supremes were enjoying a success that rivaled the other girls in the other groups. Florence had a good voice and was singing pretty much the lead. One song that she was very famous for singing had to be done by Diana when Florence had a little illness with a cold and from that time on, the song was performed by Diana. That, coupled with the fact that Diana seemed to be moving more into the forefront as the leader and she and Mary seeming more in the back, caused a lot of problems for Florence. And she did not particularly like to travel as much as they had to travel. She liked to be more grounded at home with her large family. They were all still good friends and Diana and Mary both tried to talk to Florence. Most times the girls enjoyed each other but it became obvious that a small argument could turn into somewhat of a ‘blow-out’ for Florence.

We must all understand that for the first time in America there was a Black Entreprenuer turning out hits by young, enthusiastic and talented artists. He may not have always played fair and some people call his practices of using these young people was against child labor laws and even child abuse (a concept I don’t totally agree with at all) but he could not compromise the success of the Supremes by the action of the Founder, Florence which was even attested to by her cousin. Florence was mouthy, could be a little hostile and it was obvious that she could not take what could have been constructive criticism too well. She drank and she did gain some weight. Mr. Gordy was telling her to lose a little weight and one night after a few cocktails, she poked her stomach out while on stage. This was the last time she performed with the Supremes.

Cindy Birdsong was ushered in and since she bore a bodily similarity to Florence, as well as facial, the change was subtle to some but very obvious to our community of people. Florence was told that she could never, ever use the Supremes name for any of her future ventures, she signed away her Royalties and by the standards of then even, $15,000 was no money. Still her friends did make efforts to help her and more than once, her career seemed to be revitalizable. The way Mr. Gordy did her, I am sure, led to most of her demise. We have to choose the side that seems rational to us. Florence could not hang and cause the man to lose money due to her hostility and antics and at the same time you wonder why a man would be so heartless to leave her with so little after she contributed so much to the Supremes. She did bring them together and she was beloved, even by the folks at the Copa who seldom welcomed Black folks to perform. She was statuesque, attractive and charmed them with her one-liners. True, Diana was far more ambitious, determined and focused which is a good thing and Mary was willing to understand her place in the group. This is how the cookie crumbles, some can and some cannot hang. At the same time, you can put a lot of blame of her poverty directly on Mr. Gordy. Even if he’d had given her 1 million and she squandered it, it would have been on her. But he didn’t. He denied this woman the basics. Shame on him. Not Diana Ross for making something of herself, nor Mary for being able to remain in the Background. Background singers are important as well. So wsa Florence. But I say, again, if the story cannot be told in honesty and truth, leave those lame Dream Girls alone. The actresses get younger and younger and have no clue who this woman was, nor can they afford to care. But we who loved her, will always. Peace!

This photo looks to be of a murder victim after being horrifically butchered, the victim gagged a large knife protruding from her side and covered in blood, but in fact the whole thing was set up by the hired killer to fool his client. Iranildes Araujo, the lady in question, was believed to be having an affair with the husband of Maria Simoes, who jealously paid a hit-man $500 to kill her supposed rival/

Problem was that killer Carlos de Jesus set eyes upon his target, he was smitten, told her about the contract then with the victim conjured up the staged killing to convince Maria that the job was done, but when she caught them smooching three days later the game was up.

Fashion industry language has become something of a mystery to ordinary British shoppers, according to major British retailer, fashion dictionaries a requirement nowadays. The reasons are simple, when you consider that, for instance, spants are actually harem pants, while swackets are sweater/jackets

Debenhams spokesman Ed Watson commented that some of the words used by industry commentators to describe garments are only properly understood by perhaps 5% of ordinary shoppers

When you consider that jorts are denim hot-pants; whorts are winter shorts for wearing with woollen tights, whilst mubes are maxi tube dresses, typical components of this secret fashion language, heavily criticized by linguistic purists.

It is true to say that both jeggings and mankinis, items worn in the film Borat were awarded places in the updated Oxford English Dictionary, though some kind of breakdown fashion dictionary needs to be produced, so that ordinary shoppers can get to grips with what they see on offer.

Scientists have rewritten human dispersal history around the globe, through analysis of an ancient lock of hair, piecing together Australian Aboriginal genome knowledge. DNA from it showed that other modern humans and indigenous Aboriginal Australians separated around 70,000 years ago, much earlier than anywhere else.

Existing theories that there had only been a single phase of dispersal from Africa appear to have been laid to rest, because whilst Aboriginal populations were moving into Australia, remaining humans were still in Africa and the Middle East for a further 40 to 50,000 years.

When they finally spread out and colonised Europe, indigenous Aborigines had been in Australia for 25,000 years, giving them the longest claim to the land in which they live of any other human population.

There was a new world record set on Thursday September 22nd 2011, when bride Elenia De Angelis wed in Italy with a veil on her wedding dress that measured a staggering three kilometers in length. Dozens of seamstresses spent months getting it ready, and hundreds of supporters helped out on the day, keeping the material off the ground, as they followed the slow-moving bridal car

As we all know, the United Nations is an organization of independent countries, and although it is well-known, there are those that may not be familiar with its composition. The plan of the organization was initiated in 1944, at a conference at Dumbarron Oaks, Washington, D.C. Thereafter, it was finalized and set up in San Francisco, California, in 1945, until it began operating in January, 1946. At this point, it was known as the UNO; then changed to U.N. In 1950, John D. Rockefeller donated a section of land in Manhattan, New York City, on the East River, at which time, the United States government lent the U.N. $65,000,000 to complete the construction of the buildings that were needed.

U.N. Bodies:

Security Council:

It consists of fifteen members of which five are permanent, namely, United States, United Kingdom, Russia previously USSR), France, and China. The rest of the ten members are elected by the General Assembly, for a term of two years.Any decision made by the Security Council can be opposed by the permanent members that can exercise their veto power. The duty of the Security Council is to maintain world peace, but it possesses rights and powers greater than those of the other bodies.

General Assembly:

Each member is allowed one vote in the General Assembly. It is an entity that has the jurisdiction to discuss and investigate matters, based on whatever information it can derive, in order to do so. Next to the Security Council, it is vested with secondary powers.

Economic and Social Council:

This group has twenty-seven members, elected for a term of three years by the General Assembly. It is connected with groups such as the World Health Organization and the Universal Postal Union.

Trusteeship Council:

This group deals with Trust Territories that are controlled by independent nations.

International Court of Justice:

This group has fifteen judges, each selected for a period of nine years and may be re-elected after fulfilling the term. Judges are elected by the General Assembly. The offices of this Court are located in the Hague, in the Netherlands.

Secretariat:

This group is the administrative body, preparing reports, keeping records, as well conducting other affairs of administration.

The above information is briefly put together for your information and understanding.

Some of the roads and streets that are to be found around the world are really quite astonishing in many ways.

http://www.visitingdc.com/san-francisco/lombard-street-picture.asp

Craziest bendy road on earth has to be this one, famous for the small section between Hyde and Leavenworth streets, so steep as to be too dangerous for most vehicles. Between 1922 and 1923 this was made into a much easier to navigate switchback of eight sharp bends, one-way only, going down, with a 5mph speed limit, on the quarter-mile red-brick paved section of riotous road.

http://www.inautonews.com/10-busiest-junctions-in-the-world

The broadest street on earth, putting all others into the shade, is 140 meters wide, has 14 lanes – 7 on each direction, as well as being flanked on either side by streets with four lanes extra each – and is named in honor of Argentina’s birth date. Roughly one kilometer in length, from the Río de la Plata waterfront in the north to Constitución station in the south, it is always chaotic, and needs.nerves of steel if one is to drive upon it.

http://www.swindonweb.com/index.asp?m=8&s=115&ss=289

Voted the 4th most frightening junction in the UK in 2009, built in 1972, this Swindon, UK roundabout, consisting of five mini-roundabouts in a circular arrangement, is actually far less intimidating than first appearance would suggest, and works incredibly well, even if confusing at first to the luckless motorist approaching it for the first time. Once understood, however, the feature is amazingly functional and actually designed to reduce overall congestion.

Steepest, officially that is, street on earth is to be found in Dunedin, New Zealand, called Baldwin Street and 350 meters long, it starts with a moderate slope, climbing very steeply with a maximum slope of nineteen degrees or 1:2.86,so steep that the road surface needed to be made of concrete rather than asphalt, because hot weather could melt tar and see the road surface pouring itself down the hill

This incredible structure is one of the busiest and largest interchanges in the Shanghai road network, carrying thousands of vehicles hourly, across five levels of bridges, helping to connect two of the busiest highways within the area, and doing so with little disruption, to traffic.

The most impressive, and largest roundabout in the world is often not recognized as such by the people driving around it, because Putrajaya, close by where the Prime Minister of the country has his office, is 3.4km long, and houses three major landmarks, which comprise the Istana Melawati, royal retreat, the Petra Perdana, commemorative landmark as well as the Putrajaya Shangri-La Hotel within the great circle of the surrounding road

Credited by Guinness Book of Records as shortest street on earth, at 2.06 m Ebenezer Place, in Wick, Scotland, in 2006 beat the record earlier held by Elgin Street in Lancashire, having only one address, which believe it or not is just the front door of No. 1 Bistro, the street originating in 1883, when the hotel owner, was told to give a name to the shortest side of the building, and in 1887 officially declared a street.

Welcome to Public Files Lookup – a comprehensive directory of community data providers inside the United States.
Lookup engines make cash by providing links to internet sites that the users feel answer their questions. They don’t want the same AP wire service story to show up 20 times on page one even if it’s legitimately posted on 20 subscribing news Web sites. See the tremendous power of article submissions? Just 1 article a week. Numerous posts on this blog express a preference for an entirely ‘neutral’ form of UAIN, and I beg to differ on this issue. I predict that widespread making use of UAINs will take off only if people can remember them, pass them to others on a piece of paper at conferences, and turn out to be somewhat sentimentally attached to them .

Security Considerations memo does not introduce any new security concerns, but it does attempt to identify some of the troubles inherent in a family of recurring technically naive proposals. IANA Considerations This memo isn’t intended to produce any new issues for IANA. Lookup engines have seen an index size announcement as a quick, efficient method to give the impression they had been much more relevant. In lieu of a relevancy figure, size figures could be trotted out and also the research engine using the biggest bar for the chart wins! Look for videos and images in Photo bucket’s huge library. Edit your uploaded photos with our feature-rich photo editor.

Time for the media to start doing their job and face the elephant in room.

When President Obama was on the campaign trail in 2008 he talked endlessly about government transparency and how, if elected, he would initiate a new era of unprecedented transparency and openness in government. Well, a funny thing happened on the way to the glass White House, one of President Obama’s first acts as president was to seal almost every record or transcript of any significance to his life or background, this includes all of his college transcripts including his thesis and anything he may, or may not, have written as the editor of the Harvard Law Review.

Also Obama claims that all of his records from his time in the Illinois senate are missing, including his scheduling records. Even his records from the elite prep school he attended in Hawaii have turned up missing. Now records do get lost, and especially records from the time before the digital age, but when you are the president of the united states and all of your records from birth to your ascendancy to the highest office in the land are either conveniently missing or sealed by your own hand, anyone with even a slightly curious mind would have to ask why. And one would think that would include the mainstream media, sadly it has not.

A couple of things missing in Obama’s paper trail would be one thing, but an almost complete blackout of every pertinent piece of information about the man who now holds the codes to the nuclear football is something else, especially when you consider that a majority of these records were sealed at Obama’s request or by his order. The only logical conclusion to Obama making sure his records are not seen is that there is something in those records that would be damaging to him, there could be no other reason for it.

What is needed however is for the media to quit carrying the water for Obama and the left-wing and start doing their jobs, starting with someone, anyone, standing up and directly asking Obama why he has sealed his school records and how his Illinois senate records were so conveniently misplaced.

If there was a Republican in the white house you can bet that the media would be pounding away at this question daily, one has to wonder why they are not doing the same with Obama. God knows they do their damnedest to dig up every little tidbit on Sarah Palin and last I looked she neither holds elective office or is a candidate for one. Kind of makes you wonder what they would find if the media devoted even half the resources they do on Palin to finding out even the most basic things about our current presidents background, doesn’t it?
