None should be offended by the word "no".It takes a lot to say it, people have their own reasons about refusal.

I recall an incident in youth when we kept swearing at a person who said no to us. All we wished to do was to buy some stuff from outside and have it elsewhere and skip dinner with the rest at the refectory. According to us then, we were only trying to be thoroughly honest for having asked permission, we could have sneaked out otherwise. To hell with the kill joy who had to spoil our plans then.

There are many such instances a when we were refused permission, but now when I think of them I realise what it took for them to utter the ‘no’. In the above case it would become a habit and everybody would have gone in for this, follow our example and begin partying among themselves: which meant flouting rules in those days. The person in charge would have got into trouble.

Within organizations, the necessity of refusing arises so often. It really frustrates to differ, but if saying no has its benefits, or rather, saying yes hampers your progress in the long run it is better to say it. There are various ways of saying no after all. Amidst superiors, subordinates even kids a reason has to accompany the word ‘no.’ A point blank ‘no’ should be reserved only for ones who do not see reason.

In society, there is no dearth of people asking you to become ‘birds of a feather’ saying ‘no’ becomes trying. We should understand it takes some effort to say the word, but once to succeed, you are at peace with yourself.

No matter how long is the process by which you have to get up to be hired and no matter how well did you get along with potential colleagues, it's never too late to refuse a job offer.

There were several good reasons why you should politely decline to an “opportunity” given that the financial situation allows you to do that.

Unfavorable rumors. If you hear the company’s shares are in free fall, or if there is a rumor that follows a merger, these things can be clear indicators that follow a series of layoffs and job that you accept him today could disappear in a few months.

Talking to experts in the field and analyzes the situation with people of faith, and if we accept a final offer, make sure you have a serious employment contract.

Company employees can not keep for long. A certain percentage of staff turnover in a company there is absolutely normal. However, a high fluctuation of staff should raise question marks for any candidate.

On Do your company before you accept this offer and listen carefully what is discussed during the interview. If the interviewer talks more about people who have left the company, could mean that people can go faster than the company to find replacements.

Study: In a world growing number of people who deliberately refuse sex.

On the eve of St. Valentine’s Day edition of the German Tageszeitung reported that according to studies, the number of people without regular sexual partner, is greatly reduced. However, despite the common myth about rough sex life singles aged 20 to 30, sex in their lives is present less frequently than those living with a partner.

According to the Federal Statistical Office Germany, rows of single Germans every year adds half a million people. As the polls, most Germans considered sex a necessary part of fulfilling life.

“But do not claim that one simply must maintain an active sex life for normal functioning, only dogma imposed by society?” - Asks journalist Tageszeitung.

The publication cites the example of people who consciously oppose itself norms accepted in society. Yes, 23-year-old Sandra began to perceive themselves differently from the time that deliberately refused to have sexual intercourse. ”I am no longer obsessed with this” – she admits. It turns out that sex alone is not only refuse, but even those who have a permanent partner. Over 27 years of stories Mona, she and the guy there was no sex for two years. Thus it is not about betrayal.

Such behavior has no connection with detention in relation to religion, continues to release. People who refuse sex, argue that there are many other ways to show their closeness in the relationship.

According to American Mike, was not easy at first, but over time – he refused to have sex. ”Two months ago – at the forefront of my life came out good food, chatting with interesting people and Meditation” – said Mike.

Most of us find it hard to say no at times, but there are times when it is necessary to say no, so it is important to have the confidence to say no very clearly without feeling guilty about it.

There are all sorts of circumstances when you will need to say no, being unable to do so clearly and confidently will make things difficult for you and in some circumstances could put you at risk. Surprisingly many of us find it hard to say no especially when dealing with pushy people, so here are some tips.

It is OK to Say No

If someone wants you to do something that you either don’t want to do or don’t have time to do say no clearly and pleasantly. There is no need for you to justify your decision, it is your life and your time you have the right to refuse. In fact it is better not to explain because that invites the other person to argue or to be pushy and it will make it more difficult for you to say no. If the person will not accept your decision and tries to argue or even to use emotional blackmail, smile pleasantly and tell them not to push the issue because you have given your answer and you are not going to change your mind. Then take yourself away from the conversation so that the person can’t keep pestering you.

If you are asked to take on another responsibility at work be realistic, if you are already overloaded with work it is better to say so rather than take on something that you can’t possibly fit into your schedule. Be constructive, say that you would be willing to take on that responsibility, but it will only be possible for you to do it if a colleague can take on some of your other responsibilities. You know your workload best, so suggest which responsibilities you could pass on and which colleague would be best suited to that task. The worse possible thing you could do would be to take on extra work and then be unable to meet your deadlines.

Don’t Put Off Saying No

It is very tempting to put off saying no by saying that you will think about it. It will make it harder to say no in the long run and it will give the other person false hope, so they will be more unhappy when you say no. If you know that you intend to say no, say so from the very beginning.

If you really do need time to make a decision tell the person that you will get back to them and specify a time. Make it very clear that you haven’t agreed and that there is a strong possibility that you will not be able to do what is being asked of you. Make your decision as quickly as possible and tel the person in a straight forward manner, you do not need to apologise for saying no.

Value Your Time

Your time is valuable, don’t wast it and don’t take on responsibilities that will encroach on family time. If you are a parent, nothing (except the need to earn money) should come between you and your children, they need your time and attention, do not feel guilty for putting them first. If you have a partner or spouse remember that they need your time too. It is also important to have time to recharge your batteries and to take care of yourself, people do that in different ways, but you should protect that time, it is good for your mental and emotional well-being.

Watch Your Body Language

When you need to be firm and say no, back up your words with appropriate body language. Gestures, facial expression and such things as shaking your head will help to make your meaning clear and will show the other person that your mind is made up, so there is little point in arguing.

Rapid urbanization has its price.

A scavenger feeds on what was left from a fastfood delivery.

Scavenging as a Way of Life

The above scene has become increasingly much more common during the last five years in the once sleepy town of Puerto Princesa. Feeding themselves on the trash of other people, scavengers come alone, in pairs, even together as a family. People pushing pushcarts with junks in them became a way of life for many of the poor in the city. I have never seen this scene more than a decade ago. Is this the price of urbanization?

Rapid Urbanization

I recalled the time in 1986 while I was waiting for a tricycle along a curb just downtown where I took this shot. It would take about 2-5 minutes before I could see a tricycle go by. Transportation was so sparse it would take forever to get from one place to another. Now, the city is bustling with all sorts of vehicles, many of them new. I heard from a reliable source that many of Filipino retirees come to Puerto Princesa to spend the rest of their lives, enjoying the many attractions and the relative peace in the province. They must have put in a lot of money that brought prosperity to the once isolated place of the Philippines. And of course, many tourists come to see the many wonders of nature in the province.

As any other developing city, a lot of immigrants from all over the country entrenched themselves in the ever increasing price of real estate all over the province. I once went around to scout for a beach lot for my sister’s friend. I discovered that almost all of the beaches were either bought by the wealthy foreigners married to Filipino wives or the local rich businessmen. And the price is way up more than six times its price in the 1990s. An ordinary Filipino could not afford such prices and would content themselves in either the marginal portions of the bay or in unlikely places near the sanitary landfill. Or those who have better income would content themselves in congested subdivisions with very limited space.

Houses on stilts mark the landscape in one portion of Puerto Princesa Bay.

A Bleak Future

Many governments have tried to eliminate the ill effects of urbanization through various policy formulations that aim to curb poverty. In the process, however, almost always these measures have failed. Slums, squatters, criminality, among other ills of society have emerged and continued to stay. Is there really a solution to these problems of urbanization?

I believe that unless the issue of equity is unresolved, there will always be polarity in society. The rich will become richer and the poor will become poorer, the gap ever expanding with more “progress”. Equal opportunities should be given to everyone to be able to live a decent life. But this, I believe, will never happen as long as there are people who keep on grabbing what is not theirs and taking advantage of people who cannot either defend or assert themselves through means established by the society which appears to be designed to cater for the rich or those in position.

If the above premise is true, then a truly democratic government is not in existence. With the ongoing scenario, it would be more appropriately described as a government of the rich people, by the rich people, and for the rich people.

1. You have to turn down an invitation

“Thank you for the invitation. I’m sorry I can’t go.”
Just the tell the truth. if you already made plans, say that you would love to see them some other time.

2. You are served food that turns you off.

“No. Thank you.”
While the default is that you sample everything, it’s okay to politely refuse food that you don’t eat. There’s no need to get into details. Make up for it by eating something else, and let them know how great their cooking is.

3. A suitor gives you a gift that is too expensive.

“Thank you, but I’m afraid it’s a bit too much. I can’t accept this.”
Some gifts, especially those from an about-to-be-rejected suitor are inappropriate to accept. Smile and tell them you appreciate the gesture but a gift isn’t necessary.

Earth Day 2009 is here and no rallying cry for better management of the planet is louder than the one to stop the use of disposable plastic bags and bottles.

Before Plastic Bags

Products bought in stores, delis and meat markets used to be wrapped in yesterday’s newspaper or plain brown bag wrap. The environmentalists cried over the death of the trees that produced the paper pulp that became paper bags not to mention the little dweeby bug-owl that nobody has ever seen before, and then only in a black & white handbill image that made it look sad staring out of a knothole in some dead pine tree. They said these owls would become extinct in our lifetime as a result. The switch to plastic bags was deemed an eco-friendly move. So, -what happened?

Paper is Bio-Degradable and Therefore, Better?

I hear this excuse all the time and let me identify some problems with this fallacy. True, paper will decompose and become mulch over time but you would not want a lot of this in your garden any more than you’d want bagfuls chipped houseboards. Paper cellulose is not really a good fertilizer until it has completely broken-down, -which can take several years.

Buried in landfills where there is little oxygen (because it is buried) and very little movement in the water table, paper survives for decades. Landfills are placed exactly where they are because of these factors, little to no water-movement. This prevents any leachate from contaminating streams, lakes and other potable ground water.

It was a common practice decades ago for disposing of daily newspapers to roll them tightly and bind with a string or cord before burial in the landfill. This action actually preserves the paper and some of the best excavated newsprint papers have come from converted landfills going back into the 60s, 50s and even earlier. Have you ever seen those ads where you can buy a framed front-page newspaper from your hometown from the day you were born? Usually in fair-to-good condition? Yes, -those are reclaimed-from-a-landfill newspapers that someone salvaged (possibly by the hundreds or thousands for any particular day and any particular town or city) and found a very entrepreneurial way to profit from them.

The Switch to Plastic Bags, Bottles & Plastic Packaging

They use less material than cardboard boxes and bag combinations so it conserves disposable volume. Less mass to truck means saving over-the-road costs, fuel, and less space required for inventory. Reduced and minimized packing costs are an effective inducement for having switched to plastic bags, bottles and containers.

Image via Wikipedia

Plastic bag containers are more sanitary than paper equivalents for many types of foods. They keep foods fresh longer, are more lightweight and can be formed to have handle for ease of carrying that surpass the ability of paper. Concerns of a more recent nature are that of the possibility of malicious product tampering. Product tampering measures often involve a plastic seal that is created at the point of production and in not broken until the end consumer uses it.

A plastic bag or other product that uses plastic sealing methods cannot be maliciously accessed without visible damage showing whereas paper by its nature, would have been folded and taped to some degree. The non-permeability of plastics alone makes its use for food and food products safer than paper which could absorb poisonous, toxic or any other liquid substances it could come in contact with. And of course if the plastic is of the right type, it can be incinerated in any waste-to-energy facility just like paper.

Lastly, if all else fails plastic bags buried in landfills would be stable and inert. The ultimate ‘do no harm’ would be achieved. It behaves more like paper and it would remain ’stable’ for a very long time.

But the Problem with Plastic is…

…Improper disposal!

Thrown onto the ground and left alone, it will not decay or break down easily and could lay there for hundreds or perhaps even thousands of years. Often, garbage that includes plastic bags, bottles and related plastic products ends up in the world’s oceans where they entangle and kill marine animals and birds. Sea Turtles will mistakenly eat plastic bags, probably thinking they are jellyfish or sea kelp. Doing so will in all likelihood cause bindage in their stomach, causing the animal to die.

Image via Wikipedia

Whales too could ingest the plastic items and become impacted and die from the obstruction in their intestinal tract. Birds will rest upon floating piles of plastic garbage seeking food and become ensnared, eventually drowning for the lack of ability to escape, die of hunger.

Reports cite as many as ‘one-hundred thousand deaths’ but there was never any scientific data to support this number given. Not for plastic bags, anyway. -Lost fishing gears (nets, ropes, etc.) was the subject of that report.

Fish seeking shelter will hide amongst the plastic flotsam and become entangled, often carrying pieces of plastic string around their bodies which become tighter as the fish gains girth. The entangled plastic string, nylon rope or shards becomes a virtual plastic garrote which becomes tighter and tighter as the fish grows in size, torturing and maiming, eventually causing death.

A fish or marine mammal such as a whale or dolphin might fail to mate under such an unnatural condition, depriving a future progeny. Or at least this is the oft-cited over-exaggerated claims. It is more a matter of discarded fishing nets and banding straps that do the actual killing, and not ‘plastic bags.’ We could still err on the side of correctness and not fill our oceans and cover our beaches with discarded plastic water bottles, though.

Waste Not or Have Not

We can blame plastic for a multitude of environmental sins. But plastic is not the problem. People are the problem. With conscientious environmental awareness we are gradually moving away from plastic bags, but let’s not break an arm patting ourselves on the back just yet. The reusable products that are replacing plastic bags are, -plastic cloth-like bags!

Reusable Bags Made from Plastic Bottles!

Plastic bottles and recycled plastics are being spun into new ‘eco-friendly’ carry-all totes, sandals and clothes but let’s not forget that these are still plastic. What are we going to do with these when they have outlived their useful life? Why, -throw them away of course! And then buy more, believing that because we are buying ‘recycled plastics’ again, we’re making a positive difference.
