"The FA welcomes FIFA's decision and thanks them for agreeing to this," the FA said in a statement.

“While continuing to adhere to the laws of the game, wearing the poppy on the armband does ensure the poppy will be visible throughout the game.”

World football’s governing body had initially rejected requests from the British government to allow England and Wales to wear poppies, instead permitting them to wear black armbands and observe periods of silence.

However, following statements from British Prime Minister David Cameron, who called the ban “outrageous” and “absurd”, and FA president Prince William, FIFA changed its stance.

“The Duke’s strong view is that the poppy is a universal symbol which has no political, religious or commercial connotations. The Duke has asked FIFA to apply an exception in this special circumstance,” said a spokesman for Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge and second-in-line to the throne.

England take on world champions Spain at Wembley and Wales play Norway in Cardiff on Saturday. Scotland are playing a friendly in Cyprus on Friday.

In a statement issued from his office on Wednesday morning, Cameron said: “This seems outrageous. The idea that wearing a poppy to remember those who have given their lives for our freedom is a political act is absurd.

“Wearing a poppy is an act of huge respect and national pride. I hope FIFA will reconsider.”

The British Government, backed by the English FA, asked FIFA for permission to wear the poppies, the country’s traditional way of remembering members of the armed forces who died in the line of duty.

Remembrance Day falls on November 11, the anniversary of the day the Armistice was signed marking the end of the First World War in 1918.

However, FIFA rejected the appeal in a letter to the FA.

“We regret to inform you that accepting such initiatives would open the door to similar initiatives from all over the world, jeopardising the neutrality of football,” FIFA wrote.

“Therefore, we confirm herewith that the suggested embroidery on the match shirt cannot be authorised.

“There are a variety of options where the FA can continue supporting the cause of Remembrance. One of them already was approved by FIFA, the Period of Silence.”

FIFA had agreed to allow a minute’s silence to be held before the games and for the teams to wear poppies on their training kits.

FIFA rules prevent items of a political nature being worn on shirts and although it does not regard poppies as political, FIFA is concerned it would open the door to countries wanting to wear various different emblems on their shirts.

British sports minister Hugh Robertson wrote to the sport’s world ruling body urging it to re-think the decision.

“We fully understand, and respect, FIFA’s rules on its member nations not adorning their shirts with ‘commercial’, ‘political’, or ‘religious’ symbols or messages,” Robertson wrote.

“However, the British public feel very strongly about this issue which is seen as an act of national remembrance to commemorate those who gave their lives in the service of their country. It is not religious or political in any way.”

British media reported on Wednesday that two men climbed on to the roof of FIFA headquarters in Zurich with a banner protesting against the decision to prevent the England team from wearing poppies.

The governing body of world football has rejected calls from the British Government to allow England and Wales bearing the image of the poppy, but allow them to wear black armbands and observe a minute’s silence in his place.

England plays against Spain at Wembley, while Norway is facing Wales in Cardiff on Saturday. Scotland will face in a friendly in Cyprus on Friday.

In the United States today is Memorial Day. What does it mean to you?

In the United States, today is memorial day. What does it mean to you? To some, it is just a day to relax, have a cookout with the family and enjoy a day off work. However, to many this day has a special meaning. It was one month ago that my beloved brother Jimmy passed away on an army base. Not a day goes by that I do not think of him or his wife and babies. They are still very much in my heart.

Unfortunately, this weekend in Ohio, four more families got the news that would change their lives forever. Four more soldiers from this state alone passed away and they are remembered today for their service and sacrifice. Memorial Day is not intended to be a day that is shrugged off. It is intended to be a day of remembrance for our military veterans, living or deceased who have served for our country. It is intended as a day to remember and celebrate our freedom and how it was achieved.

So today, stop and taking a moment to remember the true meaning of memorial day and thank the brave soldiers like my beloved brother Jimmy who gave so much to protect the freedoms of the United States of America.

Memorial Day or Decoration Day is a federal holiday in the United States. Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday in May Memorial Day 2008 is May 26 This day is to honor and commemorate the men and women of the U.S. military have died serving their country.

He had begun to honor the Union soldiers who died during the civil war. Too many marks the beginning of summer. Schools are often released on Memorial Day.This holiday, often people visit cemeteries and memorials. At 15 noon, Washington takes the place of national importance of Remembrance. Another traditional practice of Memorial Day is to fly the national flag at half mast from dawn until noon local time. On several cemeteries are graves of the martyrs is still misunderstood and neglected. Most people do not remember the proper flag etiquette for the day. Although there are cities that still hold Memorial Day parades, many have not held a parade in decades. As the years pass, the current generation confusion about Memorial Day is to honor all the dead, not just those fallen in service to the country. In addition, traditional practices do families take the time to go picnics, meetings and sporting events.

In 1915, inspired by the poem “In Flander’s Fields” Moina Michael replied with her own poem:

We have the red poppy

That grows in fields where the value has led

It seems to signal to the sky

This hero never dies of blood.

kilograms of Michael, then thought ’s idea that wearing a red poppy in honor of Memorial Day those who died serving the nation during the American Civil War. He was the first to use. He also sold poppies to friends and colleagues, and the money went to benefit the soldiers in distress.

Other countries have also appreciated the custom and was inspired to observe a similar Memorial Day in their own country. Some Madam Guerin from France visited America and learned from this new custom started by Michael Ms.Moina and when she returned to France, made artificial red poppies to raise money for war orphaned children and widows. This tradition spread to other countries. Indeed, France and Belgium see something like the Day of Remembrance known as marking the end of World War I. Holland fallen soldiers and civilian victims of the Second World War, but also the wars in Indonesia and other wars, May 4, a day before “Bevrijdingsdag” (Liberation Day in honor of the liberation of Germany Nazi May 5, 1945). In Ireland, the celebration of National Day of Remembrance for all Irish people who died in past wars or in service with the United Nations. In Israel, Yom Hazikaron (Remembrance Day) was observed one day before Independence Day.

Australia and New Zealand, April25 is observed in memory of those who died at Gallipoli during the First World War

We always remember a person we love, or it is a mental disease called alzheimers, which affects the memory. This month of November we remember the veterans, who remind us about the end of the First World War in 1917 with the signature of the treaty of Versailles. November 11 is the date to put on our calendars to remember the armistice.

The veterans, or vets in short are the people we remember on November 11, who encourage to liberate the world from disorder. This is very important because the industries are essential especially because of the coal mine industries. The First World War sees in the Balkans the spread all over the world of a war that leaves the peasant out of the fields. Therefore November 11, 1917 is when an armistice ends five years of disorder. It is very important to remember this date because that is how you learn that disorder does not help the economy.

As a matter of fact, remembrance day brings souvenirs to our minds when the families escape to save their lives and heritages. That is how the memory of a country is kept. You celebrate in other places how your country is and teach other population your language in case the situation comes back to normal. The First World War shows the importance of the North because the war is all over Russia with a new name Soviet Union now Federation of Russia with the situation back to normal. The problem of the coal mining industries is a problem that is recurrent. It can happen in many places, where the industries are dependent on coal mining. The United Kingdom and South Africa as well as Luxemburg are doing well because like Russia there are examples of hard work to organize the industries.

Therefore, a person that counts is not only a person that brings money but it is also a person that organizes you and that you can count on at any time. That is how you remember a person by the good things you receive from him and Christmas day is again an occasion to show to the person that you love him and that he can count on you.

Remembrance Day is nearlly upon us, we should all remember our War Dead with honour. Not everyone is a born Warrior, there are medical reasons why some people cannot fight. I explain why in detail.

Would you Fight ,Flight or Freeze?

Remembrance Day is nearly upon us (November the 11th) I always buy a Poppy for Remembrance Day it’s the least anyone can do to honour our fallen hero’s from the 1st world War 1914-1918. Remembrance Day is not just for the WW1 its is too remember all our fallen comrades that gave up their lives to fight for our freedom

We are still living under the safe umbrella of their bravery. I am not in the military but my family does have a long history in the services. My great grandfather served in the trenches in France in WW1. My uncle served in the Royal Navy in WW2 and my father served in the Royal Air force and with my grandfather they served in the Local Defence Volunteers during WW2.

The Military life was not something that appealed to me at school leaving age, it was a life in Engineering for me. It is a matter of recorded history that not every serving Soldier or Fighter pilot or Naval Rating has an inbuilt killer instinct and posses the where with all to fight! During my research for my blog “WW2 Historic Aircraft” I happened upon a log entry by a Fighter Pilot during the Battle Of Britain

Within this recorded log, the Fighter pilot says,

“That amongst a flight of six aircraft only two could fire their machine guns at the German aircraft in the heat of battle”

I was surprised to learn this fact? Of course it is one pilots prospective of a typical battle scenario. I did some more digging and found this account of combatants and non-combatants to be a matter or recorded history. Of the six pilots two became Ace-Pilots having shot down at least 5 aircraft each. The account further states,

“The pilots that could not pull the triggers were used for spotting the enemy and reporting the where abouts of the German aircraft for me and my No2 to engage”

Further investigations reported the same type of behaviour amongst soldiers and sailors. Some soldiers would fire their weapon over the heads of the enemy and close their eyes. Now I am not reporting this as a criticism of any kind. I have been fortunate enough to have not been put into these situations of battle. I have no idea how I would behave? So in no way could I criticize anyone else.

When the Human body is faced with battle or danger it reacts in several ways. The Heart pumps faster the lungs breath more deeply. Adrenaline is released to boost muscle strength. Senses become heightened the sense of smell and visual acuity is increased. Some people report freezing to the spot in fear and can not move. A automated nervous reaction can literally stiffen someone’s spine and shaking uncontrollably is often reported.

Much more is known of the physical reaction to battle and fear than was known a hundred years ago. In WW1 British soldiers have been unceremoniously shot for cowardice and desertion. The reaction to Fight or Flight or Freeze is not always a conscious decision. So much of our bodily functions are automated. You may not physically be able to fight your body lets you down under severe stress

On the opposite side of the coin some men and women become extraordinarily brave and show amazing acts of selfless bravery. Training does help to overcome some of the fear and the need to Flight. Please do bear in mind not everyone is a natural warrior.

We should always remember our fallen comrades and forgive the men who through no fault of their own cannot fight no matter how hard they try and how much training they have had.

Should Remembrance Day become a statutory holiday or not?

November 11th is Remembrance Day in Canada. It is the day we remember our veterans. It is an important day. “Lest we forget.”

We wear our red poppies with pride and put money in the Salvation Army kettles that are placed in malls around our cities.

In schools and in workplaces people stop what they are doing and pause for a moment of silence at exactly 11:11am on November 11th 11/11 to remember those that served and died for our country.

More than 1,500,000 Canadians have served our country, and more than 100,000 have died.

They make huge sacrifices. leaving their loved ones, possibly losing limb or life. They will all come back home a different person than the one that left. They experience and see things no one should see. They sacrifice a lot, sometimes unable to live a regular life. For this we shall never forget.

The debate is on here in Ontario, Canada whether to turn Remembrance Day into a statutory holiday.

My opinion is no. With no disrespect meant. I feel we need to keep it the way it is so our children will learn the meaning of Remembrance Day and the sacrifices made.

I remember as a child making large poppies out of paper plates and learning about the men and women that served for our country.

I feel if it becomes a holiday then instead of children learning the meaning and paying a silent tribute, they instead will be outside playing with their friends, watching T.V. or playing video games.

Image via Wikipedia

When I was a young boy growing up in America’s Midwest back in the 1960s, I spent a lot of time with my grandparents who lived about a mile east of LaSalle, Illinois a town approximately 90 miles southwest of Chicago.

I was there first grandchild and as all grandparents do with their first grandchild they spoiled me a lot. Not just with presents and money, but also getting to spend a lot of time with them. However, one thing that they didn’t spoil me with, as far as all those times I got to spend with them, were many of the values and traditions they instilled in me like remembering Armistice Day, or as it is also called Remembrance Day.

This date on November 11 commemorates the armistice signed by the Allies of World War I and Germany in Rethondes, France for the cessation of the hostilities on the Western Front which took place at 11:00 in the morning-the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. (Although the war might have ended on the western front, fighting still continued in other regions, especially in the former Russian Empire and parts of the Ottoman Empire.

This date was declared a national holiday in many of the allied nations to remember those who had died in “the war to end all wars.”

One of my earliest memories of commemorating Armistice Day-my grandparents always referred to it as Armistice Day-was one of those days when I was visiting them. I must have been six or seven at the time when my grandmother told me about the holiday and what I should do to commemorate it.

A few minutes before 11:00am, my grandmother and I walked outside and then exactly at 11:00, we heard a whistle blowing from the Alpha Cement Mill (it was located just outside of LaSalle) and looked to the east, toward Europe) and observed two minutes of silence for the roughly 20 million people who died in the war. (It wasn’t a holiday for my grandfather who was a refuse collector and worked six days a week.) After two minutes we went back inside and my grandmother did whatever she had been doing before, most likely fixing lunch.

Then of course there was wearing the paper red poppies handed out by Veteran’s groups. The poppies were made by disabled veterans and donations were given to veteran’s organizations.

In later years, I wouldn’t always observe those two minutes of silence exactly at 11:00am on Armistice Day which would be changed to Veteran’s Day after World War II, but I still took time out on the day to remember my nation’s war dead.

These days, Veteran’s Day in the US is similar to Memorial Day (which used to be called Decoration Day). Nonetheless, the day’s historical significance is not lost on its original intent to remember those who had given their lives in the service of our country.

One of the day’s more interesting symbols both in the US and countries like Canada, England, Australia, and New Zealand are the red poppies. The poppies significance to Armistice Day was the result of Canadian military physician John McCrae’s poem “In Flanders Fields.” When I was in the seventh grade, we had to keep a notebook with poems we had read and liked. One of the poems I wrote in my notebook was this one.

In Flanders Fields

By John McCrae, May 1915

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

The poppy emblem was chosen because of the poppies that bloomed across some of the worst battlefields of Flanders in World War I; the red color symbolized the bloodshed of that war.

This Armistice Day, Remembrance Day, or Veteran’s Day I take time out again and remember all those brave men and woman who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. And for the men and women of our armed forces serving around the world today, God Bless you all and watch over you to keep you safe and out of harms way and to come home safely to your loved ones and friends.
