I'll give you a detailed walkthrough of how to write a resume with effective examples and descriptive language.

This is going to walk you through writing a great resume. Let’s get straight into it!

HEADER

Your name should be at the top of the page and be very clear for the person reading it. Put your name in the top left and then put your personal data (i.e. Address, phone number(s) that you can be reached on, date of birth, etc.) in the top right.

SUMMARY OF COMPETENCIES
Use dot points here to tell the employer your skills. Try to keep them relevant to the job you’re applying for. These CAN include hobbies and things; they are not just limited to apprenticeships, previous jobs or work experience.

PERSONAL QUALITIES

Again, use dot points to describe this one. Try not to use single words like saying “Honest”. It is better to say a phrase that describes your value in the workplace like “Works well with team mates”. This section is essential or can be put towards the end before your hobbies. Other things like relevant training or employment can be put before this if it is better to highlight that about yourself. Try to use between three and six phrases. Some ideas for starters on your phrases could be:

Hard working

Reliable

Enthusiastic

Punctual

Team Worker

Capable

Cheerful

Confident

Courteous

Creative

Friendly

Get along well with people

Good listener

Helpful

Honest

Out-going

Organised

Quick learner

Self motivated

Trustworthy

Well organised

Willing to learn

Determined

Conscientious

Focused

EDUCATION AND TRAINING

When showing your education and training you should use the following titles:

Date:

Year completed – document senior years and the last year’s subjects for schools.

Subjects:

School

dot pointed subjects

Grades if they’re something to be proud of

A lot of employers don’t understand or need to know about “units”

If you’re part of a well known program or something you can explain quickly, write it here. (i.e. SHIP program [Students with High Intellectual Potential])

Repeat this for as many schools or courses that you are putting in.

EMPLOYMENT HISTORY

Similar to the education and training but you use these titles: Date, Organisation and Duties.

Job finding tips; the economy; the great recession.

If you are like me then you cannot believe you are still looking for a job…any decent paying job. I never thought that it would happen to me…

I grew up thinking that if I worked hard in school and beyond that a job, a good secure job, would be waiting for me someday. Turns out that I am the one waiting for it.

Out of college I didn’t need to earn much so substitute teaching for local high schools and being an assistant baseball coach at the university I graduated was “good-enough” pay. Now that I want to start a family I would like a good, dependable job. I always thought that I had a degree in that ever-so-promising dependable arena–education. Nothing is dependable any more.

So where should I look for work? (So where should you look for work?)

1. Tell everyone you know that you are looking for a job. Your best chance of finding a job is found in the people who you already know. This is often a difficult task, but a necessary one.

2. Next, what do you love to do? Maybe a career could be lurking just under your nose. If you love to ride your bicycle…what about a local bike shope. Love cars? Would you enjoy selling them? Do you play a sport? Coaches are needed at all levels.

3. What skills/education do you have? Did you earn a degree? Has a prior job given you skills that other people might not have? Are you capable of begining your own business (be advised that this takes a lot of planning and consideration, but go for it especially if it does not take much in start-up costs)?

Once you target some of these skills and loves of yours begin sending your resume to any related business or institution that is related to this skill. This takes work but it’s worth it.

4. Begin exploring additional education opportunities. If you are not qualified to do the job you want to do, find out what it will take to be qualified.

5. Finally, don’t give up. “Can’t” never did anything so don’t begin thinking, “I can’t find a job.” You can!

Just a few tips to let you know you need to keep looking.

Whenever the job market is tight, employers will aggressively challenge their current employees with extra job tasks. This is merely a strategic move in moving them into lower positions or worse, out of the company to join the ranks of an overcrowded job-hunting market. What does that mean for someone like you? I am so glad you asked.

While possibilities may open up for you, you may not only want to brush up your resume to land that interview, you may also want to be aware of the signs to look for to aid you in knowing, well, you did not have the stuff to land the job.

Here are the key signs that you need to keep pounding the pavement:

If the interviewer extends you a hug, and typically, this will come via a female, just know that you screwed up the interview, like, really bad. Not only that, but know that she pities you and think you are pretty much going to screw up on your next interview because you were just that horrible. It really is up to you as to how you receive this nontraditional conclusion of an interview. If you are desperate, you may think she really liked you and the job is yours. Though, believe me, your feelings of desperation will wear off after about three days when that much expected call never rings your phone. Let me be the first to encourage you to keep your head up. At least you got a hug and you probably needed that more than the B.S. you may have had to put up with at that job.

Should the question, “Have you applied anywhere else?” comes up somewhere in the interview, be assured that you will not be the candidate to fill the position for which you are interviewing. Not only is this an insensitive question, somebody’s mother did a poor job of raising that person who interviewed you and worse, this is the person who pretty much makes decisions within the company. How much etiquette can you envision within the company if someone is as tasteless as to ask a person who desperately needs an income whether they are still looking for employment? Do you not think that is a ridiculous question given the state of the economy? Is the interviewer some kind of narcissist to think they are so great that you would not have the intelligence to apply for positions at other companies? Should this be a question you are presented with, immediately question the professional etiquette of the company. Hold your head up high when you walk away. Someone who insults you is not worth holding your head down for.

Do not be led into thinking you are such a strong candidate when the interviewer informs you the company will continue to interview. In some cases, it is all a numbers game. Companies are required to select so many prospective job hunters to give the perception of equal opportunity. In some instances, the company may already have a candidate in mind, perhaps a neighbor or somebody’s cousin named Bob Smith, from around the corner. Be suspicious of this kind of language and again, keep your head up. Chalk it up as experience you have gained in interviewing. The job will come that is right for the particular skills you have.

I do hope this has been an eye-opener for you. If in any way, you picked up on negative connotations, this is not to discourage you. In the meantime, write out a list of what your special skills are and match them with what your passion is. Either this should direct you on a different path for your job search or bring out the entrepreneurial spirit in you. Trust me, there is something you can do to bring in a source of income with what the universe has provided you.

Signed,

Tips on how to make a good resume.

Times are hard now and everyone needs a job, and with the perfect resume what could go wrong. I look at it as a resume is a way to show people your skills and what you can do for their company. Here are just a couple of tips and information to help you feel more confident and less stressed going to an interview.

The first thing you need to know is that a resume is not just about your past jobs. It’s about YOU and what you can accomplish. One of the most common mistakes on a resume is leaving out your job objective. If you dont show a sense of direction employers will not be interested.

Here is how you can decide if you need a Chronological or a Functional resume. The Chronolgical format is widely preferred by employers, and is good if you are staying in the same field. A Functional format is if you are changing fields.

If you don’t have any work histroy then get some! Try to find a place that will let you do some volunteer work as soon as possible. You can volunteer for one day, a week, or a month just so you can get a little work history to put on the resume. Some people might ask why is there a gap in your work history. If you were doing anything valuable even if you were not getting paid you could insert that into your work history. It is never good to leave gaps in your resume. If you have a lot of jobs on your resume and do not want them to look at you as a job hopper then you can just drop some of the less important jobs. But do not drop a job if it has something to do with the job you are applying for even if it was a short peroid of time.

It is always good to put in Problem-Action-Results in the workplace. First you would put what the problem was, then describe what you did about it, and finally you explain the beneficial results. If you are a persom who worked at the same place for 20 or 30 year that is actually kind of good because the employer can see that you are dedicated to your job, but to put in on a resume and make it look good just list all of the different positions you worked while being there. One more very good tip, never fold your resume, make sure it looks presentable.

Getting a first job isn't easy, and took a while to get mine. But here's just how it works. Oh, and I live in Ontario Canada, so I'm not completely sure of what goes on in the rest of Canada.

Introduction ~ resumes and cover letters

Before you even start looking for a job, you need an idea. What idea? Idea of what you want to do, but you don’t have to limit to just one. In fact, the first job you wanted, you probably won’t get.

After you have an idea, there are two other very important things you will definitely need…take a guess? A resume and a cover letter! Without them, there’s almost not a chance of getting a job. Since I’m not a professional at writing resumes or cover letters, my advice is to go on Google and search up tips and possible formats.

My tips for resumes are:

Try to be specific to each job, and make sure you’re on topic. For example, you don’t want to say something like “I’m good at doing anything”. Also, if you’re applying for a cashier’s position, you don’t want to say “I won a soccer award” because they’re not very related…

Provide proof. For example, if you say “I excel at communicating and interacting” you should have some proof, for example a leadership/citizenship or other related award.

And you must have a cover letter to accompany your resume!!! A resume without a cover letter is like you without clothes (somewhat)!

Oh, and i know a lot of people like being honest, but avoid telling your employer that you have absolutely no experience. Instead, you should expand on the experience you’ve had from volunteering. And if you don’t have any volunteering experience…then go get some!

Applying

So you’re applying for a job, eh? (yes I’m Canadian) There basically are two ways. Search online and go face to face…(the old fashioned way).

Online. Many employers nowadays use this method since there are too many people applying. A great example of this is McDonald’s. They hire online. You just fill out their online application (usually found on their store websites) and play the waiting game…until they call you back…or reply with an Email.

Face to face (in person). This is the easiest way to apply. Just go into every store at the mall and ask the clerk or cashier if they’re hiring. Usually, they will provide you with an application form, and all you got to do is fill it out. And don’t forget the resumes and cover letters! Attach them onto the application form and you’re all set to go.

Good places to start:

First of all, I recommend being at least around 15 years old before you start. For safety, and because employers don’t usually want to hire little kids…(also they don’t want to be convicted of child labour)

1. The best place to start is the public library. They usually have positions for teens, and if not they can keep your application form for a few months so that they’ll call you if they need anyone.

2. Local grocery stores or department stores. You can apply for a job as the cashier or to work as a cleaner.

3. Restaurants are good if you want to get a job as a waitress/waiter/busboy. However these jobs can be tiresome.

4. If all else fails, you can go around the neighbourhood and see if anyone needs a babysitter/dog-walker/grocery-shopper.

So, go outside into that big world and get a job! Good luck!

Did you know? It’s illegal for a teen under age 16 to work as a window cleaner.

You might bе working аt а particular place fоr ѕоmе time; ѕuсh аѕ, а printing press, handling prepress equipment аnd CTP. Even thоugh уоu wоuld have enjoyed уоur work experience, after spending ѕоmе years’ time, уоu might become tired оf уоur job. This іѕ whеn уоu decide tо move tо а new employment.

When уоu аrе changing уоur job, уоu need tо build uр а strong resume. Most people, whеn upgrading thеіr resume fоr а new job, do nоt pay muсh attention tо references. However, thеу make uр аn important part оf уоur job profile.

Not аll jobs wіll need references; еѕресіаllу іf уоu аrе considering reference letters. Because thеу саn bе written bу аnуоnе, thеу аrе nоt аn authentic proof оf уоur раѕt credibility оr performance. Instead, many potential employers wіll bе looking fоr а live аnd self talking witness whо саn acknowledge уоur work experience.

Never include thе names оr contact numbers оn thе resume іtѕеlf. On thе job profile оnlу а sentence saying “references available uроn request wіll bе еnоugh. If thе employers require thеm, thеу wіll request уоu fоr thеm. You ѕhоuld nоt provide thеm оn уоur own. If thеу do, уоu ѕhоuld write thе names аnd contact numbers оn а separate sheet оf paper. Four tо five references wіll bе sufficient.

When уоu аrе choosing thе references, уоu need tо select thе people wisely. Mostly potential employers wіll bе looking fоr professional references rаthеr thаn personal оnеѕ. You саn include references оf уоur со-workers. However, more impressive оnеѕ wоuld bе оf thе people whо have played а supervisory role іn уоur career.

Moreover, уоu ѕhоuld nоt choose а particular reference just bесаuѕе thе designation looks impressive, оr just bесаuѕе thе person іѕ уоur friend. You need tо find people whо have bееn associated wіth уоur work, have supervised уоu, аnd know уоur capabilities, strengths аnd weaknesses wеll.

Before including peoples names аnd numbers, make sure уоu take thеіr consent. Ask thеm іf thеу аrе fine wіth уоu including thеіr names іn thе references. Many а times, people wоuld overlook thіѕ аnd еnd uр being embarrassed lаtеr.

You ѕhоuld аlѕо know thе person wеll. You аrе adding hіѕ/hеr reference іn уоur job profile, now уоu muѕt аlѕо know hіm/hеr personally. Being friendly wіth thіѕ person wіll mean thаt уоu аrе adding а positive reference tо уоur resume.

It might bе аn embarrassing situation tо have уоur new tо-bе employer call one оf thе references, аnd become frustrated bесаuѕе thе person wаѕ nоt available. To avoid ѕuсh аn awkward situation, make sure уоu give updated information. You muѕt give current email addresses аnd numbers presently іn uѕе.

Networking іѕ аn important task. After уоu have made thе references available, do nоt give uр оn networking. You nеvеr know whеn уоu might need references again. Make sure уоu stay іn touch, tо give аnd have thе latest updates.

Changing уоur job might prove tо bе helpful іf уоu аrе looking fоr а change. Your work experience аnd credibility might аlѕо bе appreciating. Make sure уоu find thе right people tо prove thіѕ acknowledgement tо уоur new boss tо-bе.
