Nowadays the paddlesteamers carry more tourists than they do working paddlesteamers, many of them are restored 19th century riverboats. The bustling country town of Echuca in Victoria claims to be the paddlesteamer capital of Australia. Australian Pelican’s are among the most magical birds to be seen along the River Murray, there are many other species, too. The threatened hairy nose wombat has its complex system of burrows along the river rarely seen in daylight.

The forest of river gums follow the river along with the red cliffs that reflect along the river at down forming beautiful colors for the photographer or artist. Eucalypt forests along the waters edge are sometimes flooded when the river is at its peak.

In 1930 the Hume Dam was completed.
