Roaring 20’s Portfolio

Prohibition is a great idea that will help millions upon millions of people. The laws prohibiting alcohol would stop the sale of alcohol in stores and in public places so people would stop getting drunk. It would help the people in the community and it would help addicts get unhooked from alcohol. There’s always going to be those people who rebel against the law and smuggle it illegally, but it would help at least some people so that’s the point.

Those people who get drunk in bars and go driving home have an 80% chance of crashing into someone and something. This normally doesn’t turn out very well. Prohibition would at least lower the number of people getting drunk in a public place. There is also street fights and shoot outs that are caused by drunks and innocent civilians can get injured or killed because of that. This is why prohibition would be a great idea right now.

Prohibition would put a giant obstacle in front of the people who are addicted to alcohol because it would be way harder to obtain it. This would make people’s life better and less messy. They could substitute alcohol for like water or milk or any other beverage that has a bad side effect. The only problem with making the law of prohibition would be enforcing it to these kinds of people and telling them that it is wrong to be drinking alcohol all day. That is just killing you slowly.

Modern days like these need a prohibition law. It would prevent a lot of alcohol related crimes and eventually, the alcohol would run out. Prohibition should be made or directed towards those who have a really bad problem. Making a prohibition law would help the people in the community in general. Alcoholics don’t think they need help so taking away alcohol and stopping the shipping of it in general could possibly make them stop drinking.

DBQ from the AP US History Text book Out of Many, Chapter 23.

The Roaring Twenties was a significant part of the history of the United States because of advertising, immigration, and urban and suburban growth. Advertising changed drastically from “this is what we have” to “you need this now.” Immigration increased because of the wealth that America was acquiring. Urban and suburban growth was going rampant because of the new industries popping up. However, there were several forces competing against each other: those that wanted to transform consumerism and those that were against the change.

The Committee of Public Information was originally intended to promote World War I in order to get majority of Americans to support the war. After the war however, it became in charge of advertising products. Because it used the same tactics that it used to get Americans pro-war, advertising became more aggressive and started to send the message that people needed the products that were advertised (Doc A). Since there was an increase in spending, credit was also introduced, which allowed for people to acquire items now and pay later for them, which caused consumer debt to increase until the great depression (Doc B).

Immigration increased due to the many jobs available because of the new industries, which required cheap labor, and they were concentrated major cities (Doc C). Because there was a vast abundance of immigrants, the Eighteenth Amendment was created, which banned alcoholic beverages; this was targeted at the Catholics and Jews since they were the majority of the immigrants. This did not affect the Protestants as much however since the consumption of alcoholic beverages were not part of their religion. While the Protestants, Catholics, and Jews had their quarreling, organized crime came about in order to make money by selling alcohol to those that desired it.

Due to the automobile, cities and the suburbs grew rapidly because cities contained all of the factories to build the automobiles and the suburbs were valuable real estate for cities. Because of the automobile, suburbs spread out horizontally, creating large areas of low residential density. This was because the automobile shortened the time that it took to travel, increasing the average lot size. Against this was agriculture, which seemed to be lagging behind. The South, for example, still depended on “King Cotton” and managed to flood the market with cotton, dropping the price dramatically.

This was a time period in which America was experiencing tons of wealth. Consumerism became a major aspect because Americans could afford to spend on luxuries. Immigrants came to the United States seeking their fortunes because the country was so successful. The cities promised business opportunities and personal freedom while suburbs grew twice the rate of their core cities. The Roaring Twenties was a time of prosperity.

The effect of the Roaring 20's on American Society.

After World War I, Americans faced a brief postwar depression, followed by an economic boom in which the face of American society changed. Growth took place in industries providing consumer goods, and the auto industry was among the leaders in innovation and production. With the ease of transportation, neighborhoods were being constructed farther away from cities, and the use of streetcars and railroads began to decrease.

The national per capita income rose by thirty percent during the 1920’s, which led to an increase in buying power. Installment credit programs further increased the purchasing abilities of consumers.

Electricity was brought to the majority of households by the end of the decade, and along with new appliances, made household chores easier and less time consuming.

Extra time for leisure activities was spent on new activities such as motion picture shows. The arts changed as well, with authors revealing their disdain of the new American culture of excess. Musical changes included the spread of jazz and blues. Golf, boxing, football and baseball were among the favorite sporting events. Several new dances, such as the Charleston, became popular.

Sex was no longer a taboo subject and became a topic of much discussion. Hollywood made movies and magazines published articles liberating the sexual revolution.

Lets delve into the sexual adventures of an African American superstar from the roaring 20's, Miss Josephine Baker.

In the book “The Hungry Heart” written about Josephine Baker by one of her adopted kids, suggested that Josephine may have moonlighted as a Courtesan in her early years in Paris from 1925-1930. Being that her sex appeal was so huge in Europe, men from around the globe would come to Paris to see her perform then afterwards would wisk her away to a private location for a night cap. Allegedly the Crown Prince of Sweden, to the President of France was some of her admirers and “clients”.

Josephine was noted as having an insatiable appetite for sex and would have sex with anyone who wanted her, which was practically every man in Europe. By the time she died in 1975 she was said to have had over 3,300 sex partners in her lifetime.

The first time I read these claims I was appalled. How could someone call my Goddess a prostitute or even suggest that she was promiscuous? Who would say such a thing? Then I begin to realize that not only was Josephine Baker a wonderful performer, she was also SMART!

The one thing I will give her credit for is that she had power and prestige, and was smart enough to make a fortune with it. Everyone from Bankers, Lawyers, Artist, and intellectuals followed Josephine around Europe like lovesick puppies. Hell, she even rented a castle in 1933 that she later purchased in the late 40’s.

Even Ernest Hemingway called her “The most sensational woman anyone has ever saw or ever will”, and Pablo Picasso could be seen riding around with her and her pet leopard Chiquita in her white 1925 Custom Rolls Royce that was purchased for her by one of her adoring “fans”.

How awesome is that?
