She could be, but of course it all depends on her husband. Certainly not many people would begin to compare Mitt Romney with Ronald Reagan. As personalities they're very different - but so are the times. Maybe they call for a different kind of Republican President.

[youtube=

Not long ago Robert DeNiro, on the campaign trail for President Obama, made a joke. That can be dangerous in politics unless your name is Ronald Reagan but speaking in front of Michelle Obama he said, “America’s not ready for a white First Lady.” Naturally, this being an election year, Republicans everywhere could be heard pretending to be very angry.

On his show Piers Morgan asked Ann Romney if she was annoyed at the remark. She said “I laughed, I took it for what it was, a joke. Everybody gets too serious in politics.”

What a brilliant answer and better than anything her husband could have come up with. That’s just one area where he’s very different from Reagan, the born communicator. With his faintly bumbling charm Reagan came over as the nice guy - even when he was doing nasty things.

Shining City on the hill

But when Reagan needed to be serious he was totally believable and credible. He talked about America being “The shining city on the hill” and he made the phrase more than a line in a speech. It was a vision – and he was going to take American there. Following Reagan was a hard act and George Bush Sr didn’t get the “vision” thing at all, especially when he was asked to come up with one. It was one reason why he was a one term President.

The biggest reason of course was that Bill Clinton was right when he told his campaign team what the election was all about, “It’s the economy, stupid.” President Reagan’s two terms are remembered fondly by many voters but they are also the time when many of today’s economic problems were born. At least that’s what many independent economicsts believe.

During the Reagan years in the US, and the Thatcher years in the UK, monetary policy was relaxed, regulations dropped and the perfect climate for banking excess was created. Then on top of that, spending got out of control – but the problems were hidden by the credit bubble. Consumers as well as government spent too much and now everyone’s in debt.

Confronted by that kind of problem it’s difficult to see what Reagan would have done. He was certainly no businessman and had never created an enterprise. Romney has, and prospered mightily.

Maybe that’s the kind of experience needed today. But a few good jokes would help too.

This is an article about the 1981 assassination attempt by John Hinckley on the then President, Ronald Reagan. It gives a background to the motives of obsession of actress Jodie Foster, what happened after the attack took place and who played key roles on that awful day.

The Ronald Reagan assassination attempt took place on Monday, March 30, 1981. This was just 69 days into his presidency. President Reagan and three others were shot and wounded by 25 year-old John Hinckley, Jr while they were leaving a speaking engagement at the Washington Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C. Reagan suffered a punctured lung in the attack but he was able to recover quickly due to prompt medical attention. There was no formal invocation of presidential succession but while Vice President George H.W. Bush returned to Washington, Secretary of State Alexander Haig controversially stated that he was “in control here.” Hinckley remains confined to a psychiatric facility after being found not guilty by reason of insanity.

Mental Illness and Motivation
Hinckley’s obsession with actress Jodie Foster due to ertomania was his motivation behind the attack. He saw the film Taxi Driver at least 15 times while living in Hollywood and apparently identified strongly with the lead character – Travis Bickle. The basis of the story involves Bickle’s attempts to protect the character played by Jodie Foster who is a 12-year-old child prostitute. Bickle makes an attempt to assassinate a United States Senator who is running for presidency. Hinckley trailed Jodie Foster around the country over the following years. He even went so far as to enroll in a writing course ay Yale University in 1980 after he read in People’s magazine that she was a student there. In late 1980 he wrote many letters and notes to her. He rang her twice and refused to give up even after she indicated that she had no interest in him.

Hinckley became convinced that he would be Foster’s equal if he became a national figure. He started to stalk President Jimmy Carter in order to imitate Bickle. He was surprised at how easy he was able to get close to the president. At one event he was only one foot away from him. In October 1980 he was arrested at Nashville International Airport for illegal possession of firearms. Carter made a campaign stop there but the FBI did not connect the arrest to the president and the United States Secret Service was not informed.

Hinckley’s parents put him under the treatment of a psychiatrist briefly and he then turned his attention to Ronald Reagan. He told his parents that Reagan’s election would be good for the country. In early March 1981 he wrote Foster three or four more notes. She gave these notes to her dean and he handed them to the Yale police department. They sought to track Hinckley down but were unsuccessful.

Assassination Attempt
Ronald Reagan, the new president of the United States and his wife Nancy, visited Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C. for a fundraising event on March 21, 1981. He later recalled, “I lloked up at the presidential box above the stage where Abe Lincolm had been sitting the night he was shot and felt a curious sensation… I thought that even with all the Secret Service protection we now had, it was probably still possible for someone who had enough determination to get close enough to a president to shoot him.”

On Sunday, March 29, 1980, Hinckley arrived in Washington on a Greyhound Lines bus and checked the Park Central Hotel. He noticed Reagan’s schedule on page A4 of the Washington Star while eating breakfast at Macdonald’s the next morning and decided it was time to act. About two hours before the assassination attempt, he wrote a latter to Foster because he knew he may not survive shooting the president. In it he said the he hoped to impress her with the magnitude of his action and that he would “abandon the idea of getting Reagn in a second if I could only win your heart and live out the rest of my life with you.” However, he did not mail the letter.

Reagan delivered a luncheon address to AFL-CIO representatives at the Washington Hilton Hotel on March 30. In the election he had done well among blue-collar workers and the administration hoped to build support among “Reagan Democrats.” Reagan entered the building around 1:45 as he waved to a crowd of news media and citizens. The Secret Service made Reagan wear a bulletproof vest for some events but he did not wear one for the speech because his only public exposure would be the 30 feet between the hotel and the limousine. Hinckley was not seen to be behaving in an unusual way that day. Witnesses had reported him as “agitated” and “fidgety” but they had apparently confused him with another person there who was being monitored by the Secret Service.

Reagan walked out of the hotel’s T Street NW exit towards his limousine at 2:27 pm. Hinckley was waiting within the crowd of admirers. The Secret Service had extensively screened those attending the president’s speech but in a “colossal mistake” an unscreened group was able to stand within 15 feet of him, behind a rope line. Regan unexpectedly passed right in front of Hinckley. He knew he would never get a better chance and fired a Rohm RG-14 .22 cal blue steel revolver six times in 1.7 seconds. All six shots missed the president. White House Press Secretary, James Brady was hit in the head by the first bullet. District of Columbia police officer Thomas Delahanty was hit in the back of the neck by the second bullet as he turned to protect Reagan. Now Hinckley had a clear shot at the president but the third bullet overshot him and instead hit a building’s window. The fourth bullet hit Secret Service agent Timothy McCarthy in the abdomen as he spread his body over the president’s to make himself a target and as Special Agent In Charge Jerry Parr quickly pushed Reagan into the limousine. The bullet-resistant glass of the window on the open side door of the limousine was hit by the fifth bullet. The sixth bullet hit the president in his left underarm as it ricocheted off the armored side of the limousine. It grazed a rib and lodged in his lung, stopping almost an inch from his heart. The president would likely have been hit in the head if Parr had hesitated for a moment.

Alfred Antenucci, a Cleveland, Ohio, labor official who stood by Hinckley, was the first to respond after the shooting. He hit Hinckley in the head when he saw the gun, pulling him down to the ground. Agent Dennis McCarthy drove into Hinckley within two seconds as others threw him to the ground; intent on protecting Hinckley in order to avoid what had happened to Lee Harvey Oswald. He had to “strike two citizens” in order to force them to release him. Agent Robert Wanko took an Uzi from a briefcase to deter a potential group attack and cover the president’s evacuation.

Sixteen minutes after the attack, the ATF discovered that the gun had been bought at Rocky’s Pawn Shop in Dallas, Texas. It has been loaded with six “Devastator”-brand cartridges that contained small aluminum and lead azide explosive charges designed to explode on contact. The bullet which hit Brady likely exploded in his skull. After learning that the other bullets could explode at any time, volunteer doctors wore bullet proof vests and removed the bullet from Delahanty’s neck on April 2nd.

“Shots fired” was announced by the Secret Service over its radio network at 2:27 pm. Agents took Reagan – codename “Rawhide” away in his limousine (”Stagecoach”). No one knew that he had been shot at first and Parr stated that “Rawhide is OK… we’re going to Crown.” (the White House). This was because he preferred the medical facilities at the White House rather than an unsecured hopsital.

The president was in great pain from the bullet hitting a rib and he believed that it had cracked. Agent Parr checked him for gunshot wounds after he pushed him into the limousine and Reagan coughed up bright, frothy blood. Regan believed that he had cut his lip but Parr believed that the cracked lung had punctured his lung and ordered the motorcade to divert to the George Washington University Hospital, which the Secret Service periodically inspected for use.

Parr had requested a stretcher but none was ready at the hospital and one was not usually kept at the entrance to the emergency room. Reagan got out of the limousine and insisted on walking. He entered the hospital unassisted and once inside he complained of having trouble breathing. His knees then buckled and he went down on one knee. Parr and others helped him into the emergency room. The Physician to the President, Daniel Ruge, arrived with Reagan and believed that he may have had a heart attack. Ruge insisted that the trauma team at the hospital operate on Reagan, not himself or specialists from elsewhere. Reagan aide Michael Deaver was asked by a hospital employee for the patient’s name and address. It was only when Deaver stated “1600 Pennsylvania” that the worker realized that the President of the United States was in the emergency room.

The team which was led by Joseph Giordano, cut off the president’s “thousand dollar” custom-made suit and this angered Reagan. Military officers unsuccessfully attempted to prevent FBI agents from confiscating the suit, Reagan’s wallet (which contained the Gold Codes card) and other possessions as evidence. The FBI did not return the evidence until two days later.

Reagan’s systolic blood pressure was found to be 60 versus the normal 140. This indicated that he was in shock and the medical personnel knew that most 70 year-olds in this condition did not make it. However, Reagan was in excellent physical health, with “a physique like a 30 year-old muscle builder.” He also benefited from being shot with a “tiny” .22 caliber rather than the larger .38. He was treated with oxygen, intravenous fluids, tetanus toxoid and chest tubes. Parr was surprised when staff found the entrance gunshot would because he still believed that he had cracked the president’s rib. The quick action of the team and the decision of Parr to drive to the hospital rather than the White House, likely saved the life of the president and he was able to leave the emergency room for surgery with a normal blood pressure within 30 minutes.

Benjamin L. Aaron, the chief of thoracic surgery, performed a thoracotomy. It took 105 minutes because the bleeding continued. Regan lost over half of his blood volume in the emergency room and during surgery. The bullet was removed but the operating staff were unaware that the round was explosive or that it could have gone off at any time. Regan removed his oxygen mask in the operating theatre to joke, “I hope you are all Republicans.” The doctors and nurses laughed at this and a Giodanao, who was a liberal Democrat, said, “Today, Mr, President, we are all Republicans.” Multiple antibiotics were used to treat the fever that complicated Reagan’s post-operative course. Doctors predicted that he would be well enough to leave the hospital in two weeks and return to within a month to work at the Oval Office.

Public Reaction to the Assassination Attempt
Several cameras, including those belonging to the Big Three television networks captured the assassination attempt. Footage from ABC began airing at 2:42 pm. All three networks incorrectly reported that Brady had been killed. Shocked Americans gathered around TV sets in homes and shopping centers. Extra editions were printed by newspapers, the United States Senate adjourned and prayer services were held by churches.

The arresting officers were asked by Hinckley if that night’s Academy Awards ceremony would be postponed because of the shooting. The president had recorded a message for the ceremony and it was postponed until the next evening. The 1981 NCAA Men’s Division Basket ball Tournament championship game was not postponed because the president surgery with a good prognosis. However, the audience of 18,000 in Philadelphia held a moment of silence before the game took place. ABC temporarily renamed the lead character in The Greatest American Hero from “Ralph Hinkley” to “Ralph Hanley.” A forthcoming episode of Walking Tall titled “Hit Man” was postponed by NBC.

Aftermath
Members of Reagan’s staff were anxious for him to appear to be recovering quickly. He was the first serving President of the United States to survive being shot in an assassination attempt. After leaving hospital, Regan initially worked two hours a day in the residential quarters of the White House. Meetings were held there rather than the Oval Office. The president did not lead a Cabinet meeting until day 26, did not leave Washington until day 49 and a press conference was not held until day 79. Plans for the month after the shooting were canceled.

The attempt on his life had great influence on Reagan’s popularity. His approval rating was indicated to be around 73% according to polls. He believed that God had spared his life so that he may go on to fulfill a greater purpose. Meetings with Mother Teresa, Cardinal Terence Cooke and fellow shooting survivor Pope John Paul II reinforced this belief despite the president not being a Catholic. Agent Parr went on to become a pastor after believing that God had directed his life to save the president.

On April 25th, Reagan returned to the Oval Office. He received a standing ovation from staff and Cabinet members. His first public appearance was on April 28th when he made a speech before the joint houses of Congress to introduce his planned spending cuts. He received “two thunderous standing ovations” and these were deemed “a salute to his good health” by the New York Times.

The two law enforcement officers recovered from their wounds. However, Delahanty was forced to retire due to his injuries. The President’s Press Secretary, John Brady was seriously wounded in the attack. He sustained a serious head wound and became permanently disabled. He remained Press Secretary for the remainder of Reagan’s administration but mainly in a titular role. He and his wife later became leading advocated of gun control and other actions to lessen the amount of gun violence in the United States. The became active in the lobbying organization Handgun Control Inc. – which was later renamed the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. They also founded the non-profit Brady Center to prevent Gun Violence. The Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act was passed in 1993.

Insanity?
Hinckley was put on trial in 1982 for attempting to assassinate the President of the United States. His guilt was obvious due to the entire attempt being caught on film and him being captured at the scene. Thus, his lawyer tried using the insanity plea.

On June 21, 1982, Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity. He had been found to be insane by the defense psychiatric reports but the prosecution reports declared him to be legally sane. Hinckley declined to take the stand in his own defense following advice from his lawyers. He was confined at St Elizabeth’s Hospital in Washington, D.C. and still remains there now. He wrote, after the trial. that shooting was “the greatest love offering in the history of the world,” and he not indicate any regrets about carrying out the attack.

Widespread dismay met the verdict of not-guilty and laws regarding the insanity defense were rewritten by the U.S. Congress and a number of states. A test which shifts the burden of proof regarding a defendant’s sanity from the prosecution to the defendant, replaced the old Model Penal Code test. The defense has been abolished altogether by three states.

Due to being Hinckley’s target of obsession, Jodie Foster was persistently hounded by media in early 1981. She has commented on him on three occasions; a press conference a few days after the attack happened, an article in 1982 that she wrote and in an interview with Charlie Rose on 60 Minutes II. On other occasions she has ended interviews after the event was mentioned.

In the media
The 2001 film, The Day Reagan was Shot, portrayed the assassination attempt and James Brady’s recovery was dramatized in a made-for-television film called Without Warning: The James Brady Story in 1991.

Soon after the shooting, Alfred Antenucci (the Ohio labor official who was the first to respond) almost had a heart attack and was hospitalized. He had a private meeting with the president who gave him cufflinks with the Presidential Seal and a Presidential Honor. A street called Antenucci Boulevard was named after him by his hometown of Garfield Heights, Ohio. Antenucci died of a heart attack in his home in 1984. The cufflinks given to him by Reagan are displayed by the Garfield Heights Historical Society.

Isn't Mitt boring enough already? The good professor didn't say whether this was friendly advice, or something the White House asked him to pass on. But as it happens, Romney is having problems choosing a Vice President.

Republicans will never see it this way - but Romney is actually the only sensible candidate amongst the entire bunch who tried for the nomination.

Just picking a few at random, Santorum came across as a fanatic obsessed about sex, Rick Perry forgot his own policy, Herman Cain couldn’t keep his hands to himself, Trump and his hair were in there for a while, and Gingrich thinks the wisdom of the world, not a horny old goat, lives inside his head.

That may make them sound interesting, but worrying too, and hardly Presidential. For many voters the fact that a candidate is not Obama is enough. But that’s a big part of the problem. Because millions of others who can think for themselves, but don’t shout so much, want more from a President.

Once Romney secures the nomination and escapes from the wild eyed fantasists of his own party he’ll probably come up with a decent, if dull, campaign. So surely he needs someone with a sprinkling of wit and charisma to energise the package?

Here comes the first problem. Romney can only pick one running mate so top politicians, being the creatures they are, have to guard against not being the chosen one. They pre-empt the situation by saying – they don’t want to be on the ticket. They can be polite about it and they won’t lose face by not being chosen.

Florida Senator Marco Rubio who could add Hispanic appeal, has said no thanks. So has Susanna Martinez, Governor of New Mexico, who could do the same and possibly win the women’s vote. Bob McDonnell is happy being Governor of Virginia. Chris Christie of New Jersey and former Governor of Minnesota Tim Pawlenty have said no thanks, together with Nikki Haley Governor of South Carolina and Ohio Senator Rob Portman. There will be more when the hopefuls discover they aren’t in the running.

It was Professor Julian Zelizer from Princeton who said Romney should go for a boring VP. His evidence is a list of successful tickets, Dick Cheney with George Bush, Al Gore with Bill Clinton and surely the clincher, George HW Bush with Ronald Reagan. The big snag of course is that Romney doesn’t have the persuasive charm of a Clinton or Reagan – and unlike Dubya he doesn’t have a brother to count the votes for him in Florida!

So he probably does need a partner with a sparkle. A smarter Sarah Palin would do nicely. Perhaps there’s one out there.

Former Mexican president dies,Former Mexican President Miguel de la Madrid, died at the age of 77 years, Sunday (1/4). Announcement of the Mexican leader in times of crisis and natural disasters in 1982-1988 was submitted by President Felipe Calderon. The statement reported by the Associated Press on Monday (2/4).

Former Mexican president dies, In announcing the death of de la Madrid, Calderon called it a leader who is very committed to his country.
Essentially the most common themes among categories of addiction are the place trust is broken. As a way to maintain your addiction shades of truth are told plus they grow into outright lies.

Essentially the most common themes among categories of addiction are the place trust is broken. As a way to maintain your addiction shades of truth are told plus they grow into outright lies. Since you know already, it will take a genius or a sociopath to become a good liar. hp2-k23 Multiple versions on the untruth are told to person after person until the addict does indeed not remember what was believed to whom.

What are you to definitely do if trust has been broken? Listed below are 3 techniques to rebuild trust.

Observe Behavior

I learned long since to check out what someone does as an alternative to what they say. No doubt you’ve had someone tell you they weren’t angry when they were turning red and gritting their teeth. Instantly, you knew there was something not congruent between words and their behavior. The key reason why I encourage you to definitely be a student of behavior rests within the assurance the behavior might be more truthful as opposed to words. Each time a person’s words and behaviors go with you’ll have some confidence in what on earth is being said. If on the other hand there’re contrary to one another trust is just not warranted.

Trust, but Verify

Past president Ronald Reagan when controlling the Soviet Union near the end in the cold war used the concept of trust with the small caveat… but verify. 1z0-531 This concept works well when you’re working with an alcoholic or addict who has told more stories than you possibly can count. You may need the perfect time to have a look at precisely what is being asked convince yourself what’s the truth. When you’ve got determined it happens to be reality you can utilize the occasion to be a positive substitute rebuilding trust.

Consistent Behavior As time passes

Regardless if you may well ask for or perhaps demand items to change it is likely it will have continued use of alcohol and/or drugs. It might even increase. You will continue to become told reasons for using which simply aren’t true. The consistency of that behavior can be something you could have revive trust in even though you would favor it to change.

And of course simple, each time a behavior is repeated frequently enough you can start to rely upon it. That is a source for trust. One other element is really a need to see a given behavior over time. Any addict or alcoholic supply you with an expected behavior occasionally or a quick period of time. It is the long-term you are trying for from them. Each time a pattern of repeated behavior happens more than a significant period of time it become less difficult to trust

Once you relate with an addict or alcoholic they’re planning to want trust to be given simply because are now neat and sober. It can be rare so they can volunteer a superb duration where behaviors can be observed and evaluated. 220-702 This really is asking these phones earn your trust as opposed to expecting it. In the end you’ve got experienced, this may be the least you ask to rebuild trust having an alcoholic or addict.

No one seems to remember that there were cheers when Reagan left office, accusing him of senility in the decisions he made as President. The critics blamed his “trickle down economics’ as disaster for the U.S. When he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, the crowds used it as proof that he had been senile in his decisions. However, in the past ten years, he has practically been sainted by both Democrats and Republicans. There was talk of blasting another space on Mt. Rushmore for his likeness. Newt Gingrich claims it was he who balanced the budget under Reagon and Clinton. Yet, Clinton rode on the back of the Reagan policies and while he left the U.S. debt free, we had an army without bullets, destruction of entitlement programs sorely needed, and behavior that embarrassed our country. What Gingrich forgets is that he was pushed out of Washington by a Congress that labeled him as unfit. Though the exact charges were eventually dismissed, the accusations remained, as well as those who spoke of his inability to get along with other members. As Bob Dole stated this weekend; “it was his way or the highway”. One of the noted problems with the Obama Administration is his inability to effectively communicate with the Congress. While Newt Gingrich may be a knowledgeable historian, it is not 1985, 1995, or 2005. It is 2012 and we live in a global economy where the U.S. is entwined with markets around the world. What worked in the past may not be the answer. We can read the history books but that does not guarantee success in the future.
