Scariest And Most Haunted Places In Italy

==============================

- Catacombs of the Capuchins (Sicily, Italy)
 —————————————–
The catacombs contain thousands of mummified bodies. Even creepier, the bodies are dressed in their typical clothes and arranged in poses. In 1920 the last person was mummified and put on display here in the catacombs of the Capuchins.

- Lucedio Abbey (Vercelli, Italy)
 ———————-
The Abbey of Lucedio was built in 1123 in Northern Italy. It was once the home to good god fearing religious monks. Apparently in 1684 many young girls who lived in the area met the devil. After the devil seduced them he sent them to visit the monks at the Lucedio Abbey. The girls managed to corrupt the abbey and convert the monks to Satanism. Things went downhill after that. The monks held rituals to call on satan, and during these rituals the monks sacrificed people by bashing their heads in until their heads were flat. The dead were then pushed to the side and another victim was dragged in and killed the exact same way. The Roman army was sent in by the Catholic church and all of the monks were captured and then executed in and around the Abbey of Lucedio. Since then many strange paranormal things have taken place here.
Many people have witnessed paranormal activity taking place here at the Lucedio. In 1950, a construction company was brought in to fix the place up and do some work to rehab to place from crumbling away. As soon as work began, the men started to see their tools moving on their own. A few days later, one of the marble statues fell over and almost crushed one of the men working near it. The man was greatful for being spared and said that a miracle saved his life. Even though the man went home after the incident and never came back to the Lucedio, he unexpectantly was found dead at his home two days later. Word of this got back to his fellow co-workers and the rest of the men quit and the rehad work at the Abbey of Lucedio was halted and never started again.
Recently the TV shows “Scariest Places On Earth” and “Ghost Hunters International” visited the site. Strange activity was captured taking place at the Lucedio by both shows. The two families that visited here during the tapeing of the “Scariest Places On Earth” show were both convinced that they witnessed paranormal activity and neither family would ever return to this evil place. The TAPS crew from “Ghost Hunters International” also had their share of activity and they managed to catch some pretty good evidence on tape.
In Italy, throughout Europe, In the world, the Lucedio is definately a scary place and it is one of the most haunted places on earth.

- Poveglia Island (Venetian Lagoon between Venice and Lido)
 ———————-
Poveglia Island near Venice is so scary that no tourists are allowed to step foot on it.
When the plague hit Italy in 1576, thousands of dead bodies and some still living victims were dumped on the island to be buried or left to rot and die. During Roman times it was used to isolate thousands of plague victims and during the three occasions when the black death spread through Europe, the island was effectively used as a plague pit — it was considered an efficient way of keeping the infected people separated from the healthy. It is believed that over 160,000 people died on the island throughout its history.
Centuries later, in 1922 a psychiatric hospital was built on the island by a doctor who tortured and possibly killed some of his patients there. It is rumoured that many of the patients claimed to see the tormented spirits of the plague victims soon after their arrival to the hospital on Poveglia Island. The doctor there investigated this phenomenon by conducting crude lobotomies and medical experiments on his patients. He supposedly began seeing the ghosts himself soon after, and he commited suicide by jumping to his death from the roof of the hospital steeple. After this, the hospital was abandoned and remains so to this day.
Today the island is only used for farming vineyards. The hospital, the doctors office, a church building, and the crematorium building still stand on Poveglia Island, but unfortunately no tourists are permitted here at anytime.

The island known by Venetians as the place of no return.

Welcome to the island of no return. The place is known as Poveglia, and to local Venetians, many believe that the island is almost a living, breathing, evil entity. While the island is beautiful by day, many are fearful to enter at night.

About five miles of the coast of Italy is an island that sits much like Alcatraz. More than 100,000 people have perished here. With that many deaths, the souls have nowhere to be free but here.

As you walk through much of the trails, it seems as if the trees are consuming your world. For whatever reason, it’s as if the earth wants to consume you and take you with it. Many Venetians are fearful of speaking about such a place. The atmosphere is very much suffocating, and at times you feel as if you’re unwanted.

The Peste Nera, or “Black Death consumed much of Europe during the 13th century. More than one third of Venice’s population was decimated by it. Within five days, many victims were dead. The bodies began to pile up in the streets. The swollen decay of the dying would be bricked up within their own homes. Anyone who tried to escape would be murdered on the spot.

Victims would be buried in graves called Plague Pits. So many victims began to pile up, that many were hauled into pits, some while still alive. They would then be burned. Since there were so many victims, the solution was to bring the victims to the island of Poveglia.

People were taking against their will. Some alive, some dead. The living were amongst the dead, and even if they were healthy, one would soon die. Because of the piles of dead, many Venetians believed that the dead reached all the way to hell.

Without proper burials, the spirits of these lost souls still linger. Many Venetians are respectful of the dead, and will usually not step foot on this island. In fact, many refuse to go here. Even to ask a Venetian to take you to the island, they not only look at you as if you’re mad, but almost with curiosity. The waters surrounding the island still dredges up the bones of the dead by fishermen.

To make matters worse, a hospital was built on the island for the ill in 1922. The doctor of the hospital performed cruel experiments on the patients because they began to see the dead. The doctor was then pushed from the top of the bell tower by unseen hands. Going by at night, you can actually hear that bell tower toll, though not a single soul is on the creepy land of death.

To step foot on the island is to bring fear to your senses. You walk amongst ash, or what many believe to be human ash. You feel breaths upon your neck; feel your hair stand on end. And at times you often wonder if that’s really screaming that you hear. You also feel an impending danger, and a need to get off the island. At one point you see moving shadows that make you wonder, ”Did I just see that? I sure enough did, and now I need to change my soiled pants.” Needless to say, to go to that place takes immense cojones, and a reserve. You may not believe in ghosts, but there is something about the island that is unnerving and will make you believe in something.

In the quiet town of Villisca, Iowa, a family of six and two young friends were brutally murdered. Since their deaths, strange happenings take place within the home.

In the early morning of June 1912, Mary Peckham noticed that her neighbor’s home, the Moore’s was eerily quiet. She was used to hearing Sarah Moore’s children while Sarah set about her chores. Mary approached the house and knocked on the door. No one answered. She knocked again expecting someone to come to the door, but once again she was met with silence.

Mary tried the door, but found it was locked. Concerned Mary decided to call J.B. Moore’s brother, Ross. When Ross finally came to check on his brother, what was found would become one of the biggest unsolved crimes in history.

Upon further inspection of the house, Ross would find two bloody bodies in one of the children’s bedrooms. These would be the bodies of Lena and Ina Stillinger, friends of the family’s children, who had come over the night before after a program ended at their church.

Ross screamed at Mary to call for the sheriff. When the sheriff arrived, six more bodies would be discovered. In the upstairs bedrooms were the bodies of J.B., Sarah, and their four children; Herman, Catherine, Boyd, and Paul.

The massacre of the Moore family and Stillinger girls came as a shock to the quiet Villisca, Iowa town. Everyone had been brutally hacked to death with an axe. The force of the trauma to J.B. and his wife, left hack marks upon the ceiling of their bed. The brutality of the attacks was prevalent on the complete crushing of some of the victim’s skulls.

Such a macabre murder left the town speechless. And to this day, the murders of these people have gone unsolved. Due to such heinous atrocities, the spirits seem to haunt the house. Since the deaths, people who have stayed in the house have reported creepy disturbances.

Children seem to laugh or cry, while tiny hands playfully tap at your legs and feet. Objects seem to move about on their own or fall. Doors seem to shut as if someone does not want them open. Light breezes fall upon the skin when windows are drawn. Curtains move. For those of you who are brave enough to stay within the renovated home or go on a ghostly tour, one can. But many are unwilling to stay for the night as sometime blankets are tugged on or completely yanked off. Personally, I prefer the tour.

One of the most haunted places in England, with fourteen ghosts still wanting to play with the living.

(Image courtesy of friend Alfred Cooper)

Upon looking at this lovely, seemingly peaceful manor, one can’t help but take in the tranquility. Of course, looks can be deceiving. Built in the 1600’s, this quaint abode houses spirits that are not only unruly, but downright frightening. Surprisingly dubbed one of the most haunted places in England, fourteen ghosts call this place home.

One ghost is of a farmer. Legend has it that the farmer hung himself within one of the rooms from a trap door. Though the trapdoor no longer exists, the forlorn farmer is seen walking about the grounds. Sometimes he is wearing a white cloak, or floating about the grass.

A sinister ghost of a footman preys on unsuspecting female occupants of the manor. When he manifests, he appears to be seven feet tall, and is menacing. When alive, he used to play sport with the maids of the house and have his way with them. This is one of the more malevolent spirits of the manor.

Another spirit is of a priest, who killed his master. He seems to enjoy harming his victims. As they lay asleep, people startle awake while feeling as if they are being smothered by some unseen object. Some have seen a man hovering about them while taking his cape and pressing it upon their face.

Ghosts of women and of a little girl have also been spotted. The most famous ghost is of a crazed young man. He killed a fellow cadet, and was returned home to the manor. He was imprisoned, and when he passed, his body was buried within the walls of his room. Many have reported hearing him banging and screaming to be let out. His howls are worse on a full moon.

Loud banging noises and voices can be heard. Sometimes hands can be felt upon you, or music can be heard lingering through the manor. The gargoyles who are meant to guard the tops of the manor, carry a most disturbing look upon their faces at first glance. A gypsy woman is often said to be seen wearing a cloak. When you follow her, she mysteriously vanishes, but her cloak can be found hanging in the garden shed.

Another spirit committed murder within the house, but only haunts during a certain time of the year. The spirit of a lady dressed in red has also been seen. She is described as being one of the lady’s in a portrait seen in the manor. One room associated with this lady is always locked, for if it is opened, items are strewn about in disarray as if the lady is upset with the intrusion. Voices of children and a spinning wheel have often been heard in this room.

Many spirits reside here, behaving as though they are upset with all the hustle and bustle of today’s era. But if you are strong of heart, then the beautiful manor offers tours as well as lodgings.

Some of the scariest places in America reviewed.

An hour outside Denver in Estes, Colorado you can find one of the scariest hotels in American history, The Stanley Hotel. The real life hotel was the basis for Steven King’s “The Shining.”

After a very interesting stay in the hotel King decided to write his third book based upon his experience. The hotel was built by F.O. Stanley, the designer of the “Stanley Steam” engines. There are numerous reports that he and his wife still room the hotel, where he frequents the front desk and she can be heard playing the piano in the lobby. There have been thousands of reports of children playing in the fourth floor hall, even when no children are in the hotel.

A visit Decatur, Illinois will bring you to the Lincoln Theatre, considered the most haunted theatre in America.

The Lincoln was built in the 1916 in classic horror film style, on top of a Native American burial ground. Worse yet, the site was built over the scene of a large hotel fire only a year before the theatre opened. Here many people report seeing people across the open auditorium, which has long been closed for safety reasons. behind the stage people believe the have been followed up a spiral staircase. Literally hundreds of accounts of unexplained incidents make the Lincoln the most haunted theatre in America.

The scariest real haunted house in America can be found in a small Iowa town called Villisca. Here the fomre home of J. Moore is simply know as “The Villisca Axe Murder House”.

The Moores came home from a church function with two house guests in June, 1912. Somewhere between midnight and 5am, J.Moore, his wife, their four children and the two house guest were brutally axe murdered by unknown assailants believed to have been hiding in the attic. All 8 were found dead the next morning. The case was never solved. The house was bought in 1994, and restored to the historical state of the 1912 axe murders. The owners here say they constantly find childrens rubber ball rolling in the hall, and though they remove them they always come back. The door opening to the hall opens and closes by itself, usually around dinner time.

I’m a person who’s always up for a good ghost story. I can often recall going to old abandoned homes with my brother or some friends of mine that were supposedly haunted. Then a game of who’s the bravest would ensue. It all came down to who could make it to the door, who could open the door, and who could stay in the house the longest. None of us were ever brave enough. I don’t think it had so much to do with the places ever being really “haunted.’ I think it had more to do with the idea, and all the built up angst of what if. Stories of such occurrences have become so common place, that you can never go without ever meeting at least one person who has said they’ve seen a ghost. Because of these stories, hearing about them have now become a part of our culture. Here are five stories that I’ve grown up with since I can remember.

Mina dos Estrellas, Mexico (Mine of Two Stars)

Mina dos Estrellas is now an abandoned gold mine in the mountains of Michoacan, Mexico. During its peak, it had employed 5,000 workers. In 1903 when European settlers heard of gold being in the surrounding mountains of Tlalpujahhua, they began excavation plans. Villagers believed that the settlers had disturbed the Nagual, an ancient animal controlled by the devil. The Nagual was a sorcerer who was believed to be part wolf. The villagers warned against mining, but 10 miles of tunnel were dug into the mountain. Strange accidents, deaths, and suicides began to occur. In 1937, torrential floods washed through the mines killing 400 miners. The mine was shut down permanently. Sometime after the flood, gruesome deaths began to occur, children began to disappear, and livestock were found mutilated. The Nagual was once again blamed. Desperate, the local villagers turned to a folk magic practioner who instructed them to seal off the tunnel with large boulders and never open the mine again. Recently villagers have begun to hear strange cries, and animal mutilations have resumed.

Ballyboley Forest, Ireland

Supposedly this was an ancient Druid site. Between the 15th-17th centuries, many people disappeared. People have reported hearing voices and seeing shadowy figures wave between the trees. The forest was open as a public park, but few people rarely venture here, especially off the paths. People feel as if they’re being watched, and some have reported feeling a heavy sensation upon their body. Two men in 1997 reported that while in the forest they could hear the cries of a woman. They went to search for her, but only found blood smeared on the trees. They fled in terror, and one man looked back to see 4 robed individuals where none had previously been.

Wilson Hall, Ohio

Athens, Ohio is one of the most haunted places in the United States. Ohio University purportedly has the most hauntings of any university. Wilson Hall is one of the oldest campuses on Athens, and rumors speculate that it was built on an ancient burial ground. Adding to the stories of ghost hauntings is the belief that a girl committed suicide on the fourth floor. Although, no records have indicated that any student committed suicide at Wilson Hall. The girl supposedly practiced the black arts, and before dying, she had written symbols on the walls in her own blood. Despite the walls having been painted numerous times, blood still seeps through the walls. The room was finally sealed and shut. According to stories that have recently circulated, the face of a demon can now be seen on the door.

Changi Beach, Singapore

Singapore is thought to be Asia’s most haunted city. Changi Beach is a beautiful coast, with pristine white beaches. While the destination is lovely, it was once the sight of many unfortunate and brutal executions during World War II. Thousands of Chinese civilians were mercilessly tortured and murdered. After the war, 135 war criminals were executed on the same beaches. People often report hearing screams and cries. Some have seen mysterious bloodstains appear and disappear. Headless bodies are seen walking the beaches in search of their heads. Families that have rented huts along the shoreline leave because of sleepless nights and because of being slapped by unseen hands.

Carlton House, Arizona

Okay, this one I threw in because I’ve actually been here. Plus I used to live off Fort Huachuca, and this house was just one of those places us kids used to go to on Halloween. Carlton House is one of the oldest structures on Fort Huachuca. It was originally a morgue in the 1880’s. In the 1900’s it became the residence for officers. Supposedly a woman by the name of Charlotte died in the house after having given birth to a stillborn boy. She haunts the house, angry that her child did not receive a proper burial. Officers and their families who have lived in the house have reported strange sightings of a blond woman, objects moving about, doors slamming, lights turning on and off, and weird electrical disturbances.
