It is clear that social order is breaking down, prefaced by the State’s inability or unwillingness to repair the infrastructure, provide decent education, promote meaningful universally accessible and affordable health care, control its debt, or do much else that is socially positive. Shrill voices call for limited government, and such will not work in this age of complexity. Increasing numbers of people perceive the U.S. government in paralysis, surely at least the forerunner of a failed State. Given this, there is the legitimate question of whether need to rely upon themselves for protection, i.e., the need to carry weapons. This article discusses the issues involved.
