When it comes to managing criticism, President Lincoln serves as a good role model. He was aware of his shortcoming and knew that many highly respected and influential people disagreed with him.

Image via Wikipedia

During his presidency, Abraham Lincoln was both greatly respected and greatly reviled. Blamed for plunging the nation into civil war, he was the president people loved to hate. Those who opposed his views regarding the war and slavery as well as his efforts to keep the nation united were vocal and uninhibited in denouncing him.

One day during the darkest period of his presidency, Lincoln was walking down a street near the Capitol building in Washington, D.C., when an acquaintance caught up with him. This man brought up the subject of the anti-Lincoln sentiment flowing in Washington and throughout the rest of the country. With brutal honesty he related many of the attacks on Lincoln and his policies.

As the man spoke, Lincoln remained completely silent and absorbed in his own thoughts. Finally, the exasperated man asked, “Mr. Lincoln, have you heard me? Are you listening to me?”

Lincoln stopped, looked directly at him, and said, “Yes, I have heard you. But let me tell you a story. You know, during the time of the full moon it is the habit of all the dogs to come out at night and bark and bark at the moon. This keeps on as long as the moon is clearly visible in the sky.”

With that, Lincoln stopped speaking and started walking again.

Confused by Lincoln’s response, his companion shouted, “Mr. Lincoln, you haven’t finished your story. Tell me the rest of it.”

Lincoln stopped walking, looked at the man, and said, “There is nothing more to tell. The moon keeps right on shining.”

When it comes to managing criticism, President Lincoln serves as a good role model. He was aware of his shortcoming and knew that many highly respected and influential people disagreed with him. He listened to the criticism – but then stuck to his course, believing that his policies would eventually bring his critics around and unify the country.

We will always have faultfinders around us – people who seldom set the good but are quick to point out the negative. Like Lincoln, all of us need to find ways of listening to their criticism without being distracted or destroyed by it.

Valentines Day is a special time, when sending out a little affection to others is okay.

The legend of the Valentine is very fine indeed. Valentine’s Day, celebrated on February 14th, is a special time when showing others heart-felt feelings, in a sweet and innocent way, is welcome. This is a day to be sentimental, to remember other people.

Have heart!

Be mine.

I love your work performance!

I like you!

You have taken my heart.

Sweetheart, be my friend.

This is to a special friend on Valentine’s Day.

Today is a sweet day for a sweet person like you.

This message is full of all the affection you need to get through today.

Electronically yours this Valentine’s Day.

Everyone at work sends you sentiments on February 14th.

Happy Valentine’s Day from the computer in the next cubicle.

Traditionally, people send flowers or candy to close friends and or family, whereas, everyone else gets a Valentine’s message, whether soft copy or printout. Cutting out a white, pink, or red paper heart might bring a person back to elementary school, which is about all a person needs to do at work or at a social group.

It’s best to be friendly without being personal to co-workers on Valentine’s Day.

This gopher sends you a Valentine’s Day greeting.

Time to go-fer a Valentine.

This Valentine greeting doubles as a reality check – you’re not going to get any at the office.

As commencement ceremonies abound across America, a college graduate who regards those years as the best of his life ponders this question.

The other day I read a report on line about how 17-year old Miley Cyrus, also known as Hannah Montana, was planning to forgo attending college.

That same day I saw a photo blog of famous people who either left their undergraduate studies without a degree or skipped the whole thing altogether. There were nearly twenty names on display in that slide show, but the one name that stood out to me was Rachael Ray, TV celebrity chef extraordinaire, who according to the blog ended her formal education after her high school graduation and set out to make a name for herself at age 18.

Reading those reports led me to think about quite a few things, such as back in the prehistoric times – 1985 to be precise – when I went to a bookstore and bought a page turner called College: A User’s Manual by Scott Edelstein, who was a tenured professor.

Being that I was about to begin my undergraduate career that fall, I thought of that tome as an quintessential guide for college life, a bible of sorts. It was the book’s first ten words, however, that has stuck in my memory after two and a half decades:

College is not for everybody. Nor does everybody need it.

At that time, I felt that kids who blew off college were, at best, nuts who were crazy to blow off higher education. I thought that they were dumb losers who weren’t smart enough or good enough to go to college, who had to join the army or go to work wearing a silly hat and saying through a microphone, “You want fries with that?”

In due time I realized how snobbish and wrong that sentiment was.

It was my academic socialization as a youngster that at least partially led me to think that everyone should go to college, and that those who didn’t were somehow lacking, if not downright stupid. In the classes I was in during high school and junior high – I was in advanced placement / honors level courses and was designated as a gifted student – post-secondary education was assumed. The question was not “Are you going to college?” but rather “Which college are you going to?” Because I slacked off and ended up having to attend junior college initially, I was on the low end of my peers in my gifted classes.

In other words, being at an institution of higher learning was like the sun rising in the morning; not pursuing an education at a university was a trillion miles from our heads, especially mine.

Indeed, as the years went by I got upset whenever I read articles about athletes like Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett skipping college to play in the NBA. My feeling was, “Who in the hell did they think they were?!”

I felt similarly about the countless entertainers and others who opted to forgo university life to seek their fortunes in the real world earlier than many of their contemporaries until roughly ten years ago, when I started seeing things in a new light and realized that Edelstein, in his book, was right when he said that not everyone is cut out for higher learning.

As it pertained to sports, I began to understand – completely – that if you’re fortunate enough to achieve superstar status in high school and a professional team drafts you and offers you millions of dollars to play, it’s pretty much impossible to turn that down, especially if you are from the inner city and your family was always struggling to get by. My thinking changed from “How could you not complete your education?” to “You can always come back and get your degree later.”

My sentiments became the same for the actors, singers, and musicians who take off for New York or Hollywood the moment their caps and gowns come off and take waitress and housecleaning jobs while going on auditions, trying to get that big break. I imagine that for many of them, the idea of sitting in a classroom for four more years after enduring the tortures of high school seems like going to prison in a straitjacket.

For still other young folks, I came to realize that perhaps they have no desire to go to college for the same reason I have no desire to be a waiter or a grocery store clerk; my natural abilities are not inclined to go in that direction. For some people, their talents lie in something other than scholastic endeavors, such as the military or in construction – there is absolutely nothing wrong with those vocations. I understand that more than ever now.

While nobody values higher education more than I do – indeed, those were the best years of my life and my bachelor’s degree from UCLA, one of the country’s elite institutions, is something I will always cherish – I also feel the same way that Edelstein felt, that formal education after the twelfth grade is not for everyone, and it’s not necessarily mandatory or essential for a person’s success, financial or otherwise.

It is safe to say that I have seen the light in this area. College is a great place to learn, grow, and achieve goals that can never be taken away, but it’s perfectly acceptable to want somethinhg outside that spectrum too, to follow a dream that doesn’t include research papers, midterms, all-night cram sessions and final exams.

The most important thing for anyone is that he or she is happy in whatever they do, whether it involves an institution of higher learning or not.

I suppose that’s the bottom line there.

Brief article about the difference between sentiment and real feeling.

Protestors, Badges, and idiots

Many years ago when I lived in Glasgow there was a man who drank in my local pub who wore a jacket covered in badges. The lapels of his jacket were literally covered in badges. What did those badges say?

Things like ;

Stop The War
Stop Whale Fishing
Ban The Bomb
Ban Abortion
Feed The World
Save The Whale
Save The Planet
Free Tibet
Free Nelson Mandela
Free Political Prisoners

I’ll not even begin to mention the wide range of T-shirts he’d sport with logos about various world complaints and pleas. When it came to pet causes this man had a whole bloody zoo full of them!

I always meant to ask him what he actually agreed with or liked about the world but he looked such a miserable cantankerous bastard that I never did.

He was probably the sort of person who cried over news reels depicting starving children in Africa (I personally thought that, rather than sending these people food, we should’ve been sending them condoms and the wherewithal to use them ) and thought that this made him sensitive and compassionate.

Yet night after night he was in this pub drinking beer. I often wondered how much of his money he gave to all these what he obviously considered worthy causes?

Perhaps he gave fuck all?

But then, if he cried at news reels showing starving kids or aborted foetuses or diminishing rain forests etc then maybe he thought that was enough? If he wore badges and T-shirts advertising this and that cause that this was enough?

Personally, I thought he was an idiot.

I give none of my money, well, except maybe a little, to charities of any kind. I have no pet cause I like to promote. Does this make me heartless?

What can I do to change the world we live in with all its injustices ( of which there are many ) and poverty?

Many people become missionaries or aid workers in remote and often dangerous parts of the world to help others less fortunate. Full kudos to them I say. Others donate money from their wages on a regular basis to salve their conscience…Oops!…I mean to help in making this world a better place in which to live.

Do you think me cynical? I’ve watched sentimental fools watching news reports of starving kids in Africa cry their eyes out and then forget all about it, go out for an expensive meal, and then on to the pub to get drunk and spend spend spend!

There is a big difference between sentiment and true feeling.

Most people don’t see this.

If you felt about something so passionately that it genuinely moved you to tears then surely you’d act? Perhaps this is what motivates certain rare individuals to risk life and limb as aid workers in dangerous regions of the planet. As I said, full kudos to them.

What do I do to change the world I live in with all its injustices ( of which there are many ) and poverty?

Well, I certainly don’t carry the weight of the world on my shoulders.

I change my mind and the world follows.

Oh. Others wear badges

Here are some of the results of the most beautiful English words, as voted for by English learners from non-English-speaking countries. Each word is accompanied by an illustration to give a visual representation of each type of beauty.

A survey conducted by the British Council among 40,000 overseas English learners revealed that “Mother” was voted as the most beautiful English word from among 70 other English words. This survey was conducted in conjunction with the celebration of the 70th anniversary of its establishment.

The British Association had sought 7,000 English learners in 46 countries to inquire about the most beautiful English words that they may have considered. Additionally, the British Council also sought the views of non-English speaking countries via its website. Over 35,000 people from the non-speaking countries participated in the online poll, including 3500 votes from China.

Below are 50 of the most beautiful English words out of a total of 70. They are arranged from the most to the fewest votes.
