An inside look at Serial killers.

JOHN REGINANLD CHRISTIE
On 24 March 1953 a new tenant was moving into his flat at 10 Rillington Place in London’s Notting Hill when he discovered a naked body of a woman. Calling the police, they found six bodies of women who had been raped and strangled, including the wife of the previous tenant, the tall, balding John Reginald Christie. Soon caught, he admitted the murders and was hanged in July 1953.

Ill-treated and bullied at school, Christie became a petty thief. His father kicked him out and in 1920 he married Ethel, a passive woman. In 1943 he had an affair with a married woman. When the husband found out, he beat him up.
Still sexually inadequate, it was this that led to his killings, the semen found in the bodies suggesting he was a necrophile. His failure to communicate coupled with his sexual inadequacy led him to prefer to have sex with dead women.

TED BUNDY
The Colorado police were perplexed when they arrested Ted Bundy for the kidnapping of Carol DaRonch. He was a long way from a typical suspect. He had a degree in psychology. However, whilst in custody he was linked to the murder of one Caryn Campbell.

In December 1977, 6 months after arrest, Bundy escaped. He was caught in February 1978, but during his period of liberty he had attacked at least 5 women, 3 of them fatally. By this time, nationwide enquiries had linked him to 19 murders of young women in California, Utah, Colorado and Washington State – as well as Florida where the latest attacks had occurred.

Ted Bundy was sentenced to death and served ten years on Death Row, executed in January 1989. During this time he was studied by psychologists. One of them, a Dr Carlisle, concluded that Bundy was … a man who has no problems, or is smart enough or clever enough to appear close to the edge of normalcy.

Yet in other interviews, a dark personality emerged. He collaborated on a book, claiming total innocence, but speculated freely on the mentality of the serial killer. For motive, he spoke of genuine pleasure in killing and claimed the act must be endlessly repeated to satiate the appetite.

He also claimed that a force existed within the personality of the killer; a form of beast within. This was the real culprit, and existed side by side with the person, allowing the killer to appear normal. To use Bundy’s own words: ‘sometimes I feel like a vampire.’

SERIAL KILERS
In the early 1960s Boston was terrorized by a killer who became known as the Boston Strangler. Killing 13 women, they were left naked, raped and strangled. Eventually, a handyman called Albert Desalvo was convicted for the murders.

In March 1953 a new tenant at 10 Rillington Place, Notting Hill, discovered the first of 6 bodies hidden around the flat. Police found the previous tenant – John Reginald Christie – and he was later hanged for the crimes.
The above are typical serial killers – people who gain a thirst for killing and continue to do so over and over again. The murders are usually very personal events, the killer leaving much of his personality behind. Profilers often use the crime scene in order to understand what is going on in the killer’s mind.

As with most serial killers, Desalvo and Christie were loners. Motives vary. Christie appeared to be sexually frustrated, with evidence of having sex with the corpses. Desalvo, on the other hand, was a pervert. Before turning to murder, he had a career as a sexual molester.

This slow transition from lesser crime to murder can often be identified. Jeffrey Dahmer, who killed 15 times in America between 1978-91 began his career by killing animals. He was a walking zombie who considered himself a failure.
Sometimes, a killer can appear a confident, normal person. Homosexual John Wayne Gacy, who admitted to 33 murders of young men around Chicago in the 1970s and 80s, was a successful businessman and even entertained children as a clown.

Ted Bundy, who was executed in 1989, killed all over America. His deep frustrations were hidden behind a confident façade, and he even appeared a bit of a womanizer. Peter Sutcliffe, the Yorkshire Ripper, who killed 13 women between 1975-81, lived with a wife who had no idea what he was up to.
Sutcliffe was, infact, an evangelical killer. God spoke to him to tell him to clean prostitutes off the street. He carried out his crimes in a matter of fact way. Alternatively, Dennis Nilson, who was discovered when his drains were blocked by body parts in 1983, killed 15 young men principally, it seems, because he had taken them to his flat and he didn’t want them to go.

One worrying aspect of serial killers is that they do not appear to be insane. In court they are judged sane and sent to prison rather than a mental institution. But maybe this point may hold the key to understanding them.
That they are monsters is not in doubt, but could it be that the monster is simply a part of their make-up that only surfaces from time to time? For instance, how can a ‘monster’ successfully lead a normal life undetected? Further, in most serial killings, silly mistakes are made, and often they are happy to be caught, as if there is a ‘conscience’ working behind the scenes.

These three aspects of the serial killer – the monster, the façade and the conscience – have similarities to a phenomenon known as multiple personality, where, due to psychological problems, the mind can fragment into different characters who take it in turn to occupy the host.

I am not saying that serial killers are multiple personality sufferers, but as Ted Bundy advised, sometimes a monster takes him over. Perhaps, to understand the serial killer, we need to know more about what goes on in his head.

BEVERLEY ALLITT
Nurses have been known to become serial killers. Consider Beverley Allitt. Working in a Grantham children’s ward in 1991, within a week, baby Liam Taylor died. Over the following months, four babies would die in all, with 24 incidences of cardiac arrest or respiratory failure.

One of these was Paul Crampton, 5 months old. When his blood was analysed, it was high in insulin. Checks showed that Beverley Allitt had been on duty during all the attacks and she was arrested. Remaining in Rampton Mental Hospital, Allitt suffers from Munchenhausen’s Syndrome by Proxy, where her need for attention results in her hurting, first, herself, and then others.

BOSTON STRANGLER
On 14 June 1962 the body of Anna Slesers was found in her Boston home. She was the first of 13 women of varying ages to be found dead in their homes, naked, raped and strangled with a stocking, their bodies left in obscene poses. This was the beginning of the Boston Strangler. The reign of terror ended in October 1964 when a man entered a house and assaulted a woman before saying sorry and leaving.

The description of the assailant fitted the Measuring Man, a sexual pervert who had assaulted dozens of women. Soon, handyman Albert Desalvo was arrested, and in the Bridgewater Mental Institute he confessed to being the killer. Through plea bargaining, he received life for lesser crimes and was stabbed to death in prison in 1973.

What kind of man was Desalvo? His mother gave him little affection and his father was brutal, one day breaking his wife’s fingers one by one. Soon becoming a housebreaker, Desalvo joined the US Army in Germany, marrying a local girl who divorced him for serial adultery and a high sexual urge.

Indeed, Desalvo claimed to always have an erection – the answer to his previous crime spree as the Measuring Man, so called because he’d con women into thinking he could make them into models, his advances beginning with measuring them up. It is believed he may have committed 300 rapes before finally turning to murder.

HAROLD SHIPMAN
Harold Shipman is thought to be Britain’s worst serial killer, killing a possible 215 people, mainly elderly patients, with overdoses of diamorphine. Born in Nottingham in 1946, his mother died when he was 17. It is thought his fascination with death began here. Marrying his wife, Primrose, in 1965, he first began practicing as a GP in Hyde, Greater Manchester, in 1979. Six years later, an investigation into death rates among his patients led to no action.

Investigated again in 1998 after another GP expressed concern, he is known to have killed three patients before his arrest. With many bodies exhumed, he was tried at Preston Crown Court in 1999 and found guilty of fifteen murders. Arrogant and unrepentant, Shipman hanged himself in his cell in January 2004.

How the Craigslist killers Richard Beasley and Brogan Rafferty lured the unemployed to their deaths.

The media is calling them the Craigslist killers. They are 16-year-old Richard Beasley and 52-year-old Brogan Rafferty.

This duo is responsible for the Craigslist deaths. The duo is alleged to have used the popular classified advertising website Craigslist to lure their victims to their deaths.

What the duo did was place job adverts on Craigslist, and lure job seekers to a remote part of Ohio, where they shoot the jobseekers dead and bury them in shallow graves.

Police reports show that Beasley and Rafferty placed an advert on Craigslist with the attractive title: “Job of a Lifetime”. They were looking for applicants who would act as caretakers for a 688-acre patch of hilly farmland. The salary was $300.00 a week and accommodation in a trailer.

According to the police, over hundred people responded to the advert. And those men who were called to attend an interview were brutally killed.

Beasley and his mentor Rafferty would drive those men they have offered the fake ‘job’ to the supposed “farmland’ which in reality never existed. It was here they killed all their victims by a shot to their heads.

So far, police have discovered four bodies, but the search continues as police believe there may be more victims.

The duo managed to evade the law until one time they run out of luck with one of their victims – 48-year-old Scott Davis, who succeeded in fleeing from them when they drove him to the woods to be killed. Davis then called the police who arrived at the scene to be greeted with several recently dug shallow graves.

The duo was finally caught after FBI agents tracked them through their computers.

My paper for forensics, a college class.

A serial killer is a person who carries out a series of murders over a period of time. What causes these men and women to begin and continue their streak of awful murders? How does one cope with the “blood on their hands”? What determines their punishment for the crime they did?

Serial killers, such as Ted Bundy, Genene Jones, and Robert Hansen, follow a certain routine to qualify for the definition of a serial killer. To be a serial killer, the person needs to follow a certain routine over a period of time, with a single victim each time. These men and women are usually smart and elude detection. Though this strikes fear throughout, another type of murder creates an awareness within the community. Mass murderers usually kill several victims in an amount of time, such as minutes, hours. Their normal crime scenes are shopping malls, restaurants, and government offices. Unfortunately certain people fall to the conscienceless action, for example families, or random bystanders.

Serial killers have different motives for their actions. They could be for sex or lust. Sex murderers kills often out of fear or wanting to silence their victims‘ words. However, lust murderers harbor deep-rooted fantasies thus want to commit their inner desires. The “Southside Slayer” killed twelve women prostitutes with a small handgun, thus causing a worry in the town. Ted Bundy, a well known killer, victimized forty young women between 1964 and 1978 in the Pacific Northwest, including Utah, Idaho, Colorado and another odd spot Florida. He sexually assaulted the women before and after death, then murdered them with a blunt instrument or strangulation. Robert Hansen had a “severe inferiority complex with girls”, so he started rape and torture young women. These women included seventeen prostitutes, nude dancer, and women that made him feel weak. He was known as Alaska’s worst mass murderer.

For gratification, some murderers seek other ways such as animal torturing, or using young persons. Genene Jones seeks enjoyment by murdering six children with injections of succinylcholine, a hard to detect drug that paralyzes. Her victim that convicted her, Chelsea McClellan, a fifteen month old, revealed the rest of the victim’s evidence. Normally murderers who carry out several killings are psychologically unstable. In younger years, killers might have felt a sense of rejection, failure, and loss of autonomy. They are disoriented enough to think killing is a “recreational sport”.

In return for their wrong doings, serial killers are given a punishment. Modern thinkers believe that death is only way to deter a criminal from striking again, yet others think this option is too cruel and expensive. It’s the last resort to deter people from -committing particularly heinous crimes.

“We generally cannot incarcerate people for crimes they have to commit.” (Hickey,1991)

The decision to kill or not is not always decided by the thoughts, it could be decided if the state has the penalty. Other options for the killers are to take the plea bargains they were offered, which often lead to confessing and a lesser year sentence. Some criminals get a life sentence without parole, meaning no possible chance of being free again. Most serial killers or mass murderers are highly unlikely to have liberty to outside life. From 1995 to 2000, seventy-one executions averaged per year, a twenty-one thousand percent increase from 1966 to 1980.

In the end, most well known serial killers are captured and executed within the year or a couple of months after. If not, their actions taken in the prison will be worse than what would be produced, such as a riot, if they were still alive. Their minds are unstable for their actions they created. Thus they are either dead or not in the real world

It is a disturbing thought, just thinking about the serial killers, let alone those that have never been caught. It is very logical that we have no names of the serial killers never caught.

Serial Killers Never Caught.

Serial killers has a distinct pattern in the way that they kill, they see reality very different from you and I. They are most often very intelligent individuals (only few such as the Green River Killer are not).

A serial killer that has never been caught, is listed by the victims and other facts such as pattern and location.

Some unsolved serial murders,
some serial killers never caught.

The one most talked about serial killers never caught, is probably Jack the Ripper in the late 18 century in England.. It is defiantly with him that the world first encountered a real serial killer as we classify them today. What the police saw when they reached a crime scene of Jack the Ripper, could not possibly be describe in plain words. Jack the Ripper was more than gruesome, a horrible individual that left the world in a state of chock… how could a human being do such a thing?…

More serial killers never caught.

Axeman of New Orleans, this killer took the lives of 12 innocent people between 1918-1919. It is suspected that he was inspired by Jack the Ripper, because he taunted the police. As rapidly as these murders had begun, as rapidly they stopped, no one was ever identified..

The Kingsbury Run Murders, also known as the Cleveland Torso killer. Around 16 victims are known about and it happened around the 1930’s

Another talked about serial killers never caught, has to be the Zodiac killer. A gruesome and vengeful killer or even killers, that killed between the 1960 and 1970’s. This or these killers pattern was more to taunt than anything else, he would spontaneously kill and then in one case he called the dispatch and told them where to find the victims. He also taunted the police and media, by contacting them in different ways. He or they are believed to have killed 37 people.

Image from http://www.flickr.com/photos/seanutbutter

The Southside Slayer roamed around in Los Angeles in the middle of the 1980’s and killed at least 20 women. This crime is now believed to have been committed by four people.

Serial Killers Never Caught.

There are many unsolved murders that seem to have the same patterns. Another note to make, is that professional psychologists and other enforcement officers say that there is around 250 serial killers active on an average everyday…

Marybeth Tinning was convicted of killing her infant daughter, but did she actually kill all of her children?

Marybeth Roe was born on September 11, 1942 in Duanesburg, New York. Duanesburg is a small town not far from Schenectady, New York. Her parents were Alton and Ruth Roe. Her father, Alton, worked as a press operator for General Electric. Marybeth had one sibling, a younger brother.

Childhood

Marybeth claims to have grown up in an abusive home. She says that her father once locked beat her and locked her in a closet. Later she said that he didn’t mean her any harm.

Marybeth was an average student throughout school. She graduated from Duanesburg high school and had intentions to go on to college, but she never did.

Adulthood

After high school, Marybeth worked a few different jobs. The jobs were low in pay and she didn’t need a lot of skills to do the work. Eventually she was hired on at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady as a nurse’s aid. She did her job to the best of her ability and her performance was satisfactory. She wasn’t a happy woman, she was always seemed a bit depressed and others found her to be odd.

Marybeth met Joe Tinning on a blind date. Joe worked for General Electric. He was a quiet and shy man. They got along quite well and married a couple of years later in 1965. The couple worked hard and tried to make a good life for themselves. They were like most other married couples. Within the first five years of their marriage, the couple had two children. A boy named Joseph Jr and a girl named Barbara.

In 1971, Alton, Marybeth’s father, died from a heart attack. The following December the couple’s third child was born. Her name was Jennifer. The new baby was very sick with meningitis and died in January of 1972. Some believe that the deaths of her father and her baby, made her irritated a pre existing mental condition. She started to pull further away from the people around her.

The Children

Less than a month after Jennifer’s death, Marybeth brought her two year old son, Joseph, to the emergency claiming that he had a seizure. The medical staff observed him for a while, but couldn’t find anything wrong. They sent him home with his mother. Later that night she brought him back. He was dead. She told them that he had gotten tangled up in his sheets while he was sleeping. The cause of death was marked as unknown.

A little over a month later, Marybeth brought her four year old daughter, Barbara, to the ER. Marybeth said that her daughter had been having severe convulsions. The doctor wanted to keep the child overnight to keep an eye on her, but Marybeth took her home. A few hours later, Barbara was back at the hospital and she was unconscious. She died at the hospital. The cause of death was unknown.

On Thanksgiving of 1973, Marybeth gave birth to her fourth child. His name was Timothy. Marybeth brought him home from the hospital, and less than a month later, she brought him back. He was dead. Marybeth told the doctor that she had checked on him while he was sleeping and he was dead in his crib. The cause of death was marked as sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

Marybeth gave birth to her fifth child a couple of years later. He was an Easter baby and she named him Nathan. He died when he was five months old. She had been driving down the road with him in the passenger seat. She looked down and noticed that he wasn’t breathing. There was no medical reason why he should have died.

In 1978, the Tinnings adopted a baby boy named Michael. A couple of months later, Marybeth gave birth to her sixth child. Her name was Mary Frances. When Mary Frances was about three months old she was rushed to the hospital because she was having seizures. The hospital staff was able to save the baby. A month later, Mary Frances was brought back to the hospital. She was dead. Marybeth said didn’t know how it happened. They did an autopsy on the baby and found nothing. The death was marked as SIDS.

On November 19, 1979 Marybeth gave birth to her seventh child. He was named Jonathan. When he was about 4 months old he was brought to the hospital because he was unconscious. They were able to revive him and he was sent to a hospital in Boston, so he could have tests done. They could not find any reason for him to stop breathing. He was sent home and a few days later he was brought back to the hospital. He was dead.

About a year later, Marybeth showed up at the hospital with her adopted son, Michael. He too was dead. The doctors examined his body. They did find small traces of pneumonia, but not enough to cause the death of the child. This ordeal got people thinking that something wasn’t right. Before it was believed that there was some genetic link with the children that had caused them to die, but Michael was not a blood relative. That ruled out anything genetic.

Marybeth was 42 years old when she had her eighth child in 1985. She was a baby girl and they named her Tami Lynne. The newest member of the Tinning family was four months old when she suffered the same fate as her other siblings. Again the baby was tangled up in her blankets and found unconscious. The death of Tami Lynne sparked the police investigation.

The Arrest, Trial and Conviction

After 14 years of mysterious deaths of her children, Marybeth Tinning was taken in for questioning on February 4, 1986, at the Schenectady police station. She waived her rights and answered their questions. Marybeth admitted to suffocating three of her children (Timothy, Nathan and Tami), but said she didn’t do anything to harm the other children. She was arrested and formally charged with Tami’s death. She was charged with Tami’s death and not the others because they had the most evidence for Tami’s murder.

The trial started on June, 22, 1987. It took place at the Schenectady County Court. Marybeth did not take the witness stand in her defense. Several doctors took the stand to vouch that Tami Lynne did not die from SIDS.

On July 17, 1987, Marybeth Tinning was found guilty of murdering her baby girl, Tami Lynn. On October 2, 1987, Marybeth received a sentence of twenty years to life in prison. Later charges were brought against her for the deaths of Nathan and Timothy, but were later dropped because of the lack of evidence. Marybeth resides in Bedford Hills Prison for Woman, which is located in New York. She was denied parole in 2007 and again in 2009.

An article about five most mysterious serial killers.

It has always been very complicated to comprehend the grounds of the inhumane behaviors displayed by all those notorious criminals, by dint of brutally attacked and fiercely mutilated dead bodies. The reasons may be some kind of abnormal mental illness or a frustration which has risen through years. Myths have grown through ages about serial killers, most people believed they were all men, some believed they kept newspaper clippings with them and many other beliefs and opinions are held. Well, let us see what the following 5 of the most vicious murderers have in their profiles:

1) Iqbal, Javed:

A ruthless murderer from Lahore, Pakistan killed around 100 boys in a period of just 6 months. He lured boys, mostly beggars of ages between 6 and 16 to his home, where he molested them, throttled them to death, dissected their bodies and disposed them into barrels of acid. A peculiar fact about him is that he kept a record of all his victims, which included their names, ages and photos. He later himself surrendered to the Pakistani authorities in 1999 and claimed all the murders. When questioned, he stated that those murders were carried out as act of revenge against police, who had once badly assaulted him during one of his previous arrests. He was sentenced to death and was to be slaughtered the same way as he had done to his victims. But before he could be executed he was found dead in his prison cell.

2) Jack The Ripper:

It was during August 7 and November 10, 1888, a murderer called Jack the Ripper haunted the White chapel area near London city. During this period, he is known to have killed at least 5 people and all these murders were alike. In all 5 cases, victim was a woman, all 5 women were prostitutes, each victim’s throat was cut and body fiercely mutilated. Police received furious notes from a person who called himself Jack the Ripper and related himself to the murder. In one case he mailed a half cut human kidney to the police station. These events caused uproar among the public, in spite of vigorous tries, the killer was never caught.

3) Shipman, Harold:

Lost his mother in a very early age, as he saw her die before his own eyes while taking doses of morphine to ease the pain of her death due to lung cancer. Shipman graduated from Leeds University with a medical degree in 1970, became a general practitioner by the year 1977 in the town of Hyde in Manchester. According to a report published in 2002, by the time of his conviction in 2000 on account of forgery, he had killed at least 215 of his patients, who were between the ages 47 and 93. In most cases shipman injected his patients with a deadly dose of painkiller diamorphine. People supposed he avenged the death of his mother, others reasoned he was following euthanasia, removing the older people from society. He committed suicide by hanging himself in prison, his motives remained ambiguous.

4) Zodiac Killer:

Between 1966 and 1969 in northern California, USA, an unknown serial killer is known to have murdered 6 people. First of his noticeable victim was a college student of age 18, stabbed along a riverside in 1966. Not very long after this slaughter a local newspaper received notes from zodiac killer, who stated details about the murder and warned that this was neither first nor last. 2 years later in 1968 he shot a teenage couple in car, a year later another couple was shot in the same situation though the male survived. In 1969 police received an unexpected call from a person who claimed all the previous murders. Sometime later that year, he shot another couple, male survived this time too, also the same year he shot a taxi driver, who was last of his evident victims. The crimes stopped as mysterious as they started but crime writer, Robert Gray smith contended that he remained active in 1980’s. In 1990’s a school teacher Arthur Leigh Allen, convicted for child molesting in 1975, was suspected. But was never proved to be the Zodiac Killer.

5) Boston strangler:

A serial killer from Boston, USA killed at least 13 women between 1962 and 1964. The very first of his victims was a 55 year old woman who was sexually assaulted and put to death in her own apartment in gainsborough street in June 1962. In the following months, more women of ages ranging from 65 to 85 were found dead in the same way. During December, a young woman of age 23 was smothered to death, followed by another death of a young woman only 3 weeks later. Till January 1964, 13 women were dead. In 1965 Albert Desalvo, a patient at state mental hospital with a record of burglaries in 1950’s, confessed to the murders, but had no physical link to any of the killings. However, he was sentenced to life imprisonment on behalf of sexual assaults. He was murdered in Walpole state prison in 1973. In 2001, DNA tests proved that Desalvo was not guilty to any of those murders. The original Boston strangler was never captured.
