What are the functions of language?

Language shapes man’s life. He acquires and transmits knowledge through words. On the sentimental level , he uses it to express his feelings, thoughts, emotions , and sentiments; on the instrumental level, he uses it as a tool for advancement.

Language is what separates man from beasts. This is explained by Bertrand Russell: “No matter how eloquently a dog may bark, he cannot tell you that his parents were poor but honest.”

To understand humanity, we must know the functions or uses of language, the language that makes us human. Among the various functions of language are the referential, conative, emotive, and poetic functions.

The referential function establishes the relationship between language and the world (as in science and history). Here, one has to verify whether the statements are true or false , a distinction between fact and fancy.

The conative function aims to find out the effect/s of the language upon the reader or listener (as in political conviction or persuasion). Conation means endeavor to affect someone with the power of language.

The emotive function establishes the relationship between language and the speaker (as in autobiography, diary, confession). The statements have to be verified to find out if the speaker or writer is sincere or not.

The poetic function is interested in the artistic nature of the language (beauty of expression and truth). How does language work as verbal art? The chief orientation of the poetic function of language is “toward the message” , and so one has to focus on the message for its own sake. Poetic function thus makes verbal art meaningful without reducing it to a referential representation of the real world.

There is no justification for attempts to confine such poetic conventions as meter, alliteration, or rhyme to the sound level alone. Sound and meaning should prevail. The poetic function should form as foreground to the material nature of words rather as windows into the world.

Some say woman cheat more than men,but here is some signs that say she is cheating.

Scent of another man:

If she suddenly starts wearing a new fragrance, the alarm bells need not sound off. If you smell another man’s cologne on her clothes, hands or neck, then she may be planting her lips where she shouldn’t. Watch out.

Number 9

She doesn’t criticise you anymore:

There was a time when she cared about what you did or said. Now, it seems that she couldn’t care less if you were dead or alive. She might have simply given up on trying to convert you or she finally accepted your faults, but she could have just as easily met someone else who does not have your faults and bad qualities.

Number 8

You caught her in a lie:

Catching her in a flat-out lie is a key sign that she is cheating on you or doing something wicked. When you discover that the person you’re supposed to trust has been lying to you, your feelings will surely run the gamut — from anger to rage, and from frustration to sadness.

Number 7

Your sex life is non-existent:

In the past, the two of you went at it like wild animals in heat, but now she gives you the cold shoulder when you try to initiate sexual relations, and intimacy is non-existent. Either she has lost interest in you, which is not good, or she is getting her kicks elsewhere.

Number 6

She has a new wardrobe:

She has an entirely new wardrobe, her lingerie has taken a cue from Victoria’s Secret and her hair looks great. She could be cheating on you, but here is a warning to the paranoid: if she started a new job, forexample, she is probably not cheating. If she is doing this all for you, wake up and please her as she is not cheating on you … at least not yet.

Number 5

She’s getting in shape:

She hits the gym, eats healthier and she has her eyes set on becoming fit in a short time span. Again, she might be looking to improve her health and lifestyle or she might be doing the extra laps for you. But if she gets home from the gym, showers and runs out (without telling you where she’s off to), then something is up.

Number 4

She works longer hours:

A surprising number of women have admitted that if they were to cheat, it would likely be with a colleague. So unless she was just promoted, has a project to close or she’s in the midst of a busy season, her work hours should remain stable. If she suddenly starts working 60 hours a week instead of 40, she might just be ‘logging’ in those 20 extra hours on someone else’s pay sheet.

Number 3

She likes her new colleague:

Your girlfriend might be cheating if she was, at one time, constantly talking about her new male colleague, pal or friend and suddenly stopped. This guy, who at first seemed to be the centre of the universe, suddenly disappeared from the radar. Actually, he only disappeared from your radar, as he has become the number-one bogey on hers. If you see your girlfriend showing any form of affection towards another man, alarm bells should start ringing.

Number 2

You’re cut off from her family:

Her family is now exactly that: her family. One reason for the extra barrier might be to facilitate the eventual separation caused by her cheating or she needs her family to cover up for her. Perhaps the in-laws are in the dark as much as you, and would not condone her actions.

Number 1

She has become defensive and paranoid

She thinks that you are out to get her when you are genuinely clueless about her cheating ways. She stutters and worries excessively when you ask her innocent questions. She answers some phone calls and reacts awkwardly, while she completely avoids other calls.

Engineering is one of the most "lucrative, secure and popular" career choices out there; that's why many people pursue this path. But, be on the lookout for symptoms that may suggest that Engineering is not suitable.

Choosing a degree course is one of the major decisions we made in life. It is not something to be taken lightly, it determines not only your career path but also your status in society. It is hardly a surprise that parents, particularly Asians, would push their children to aim for certain career paths like medical, accounting, law and the most notorious of all, engineering.

Of course, the consequences of pursuing the wrong course is as painful as suffering a terrible disease. And just like a disease, there are symptoms you need to be on the lookout that may suggest engineering isn’t for you.

(Note: These points are all based on my own personal experience and also, some of these same points may not be only for engineering per se.)

#1. YOU COULD NOT GRASP EVEN THE SO-CALLED “EASIEST CONCEPT”

Let’s say, you have no idea what trigonometry is. The lecture notes don’t make sense. You asked the lecturer for clarity but you still feel like you’re trying to unlock the Da Vinci Code. What an idiot you must have felt when you realized that you’re the only one in class that still struggles with it. Even asking your ‘clever’ friends didn’t make any difference at all. I will not be surprised if Google won’t do you any good. If that happens, good luck on your final exams, then. WHY, TRIGONOMETRY. WWWHHHHYYYYYYYYY???????????????

#2. YOU JUST DON’T FEEL INSPIRED

Not even the most enthusiastic lecturers can get that light-bulb in your brain to light up. Regardless of how many times you were shown real-life, practical applications of whatever it is you’re learning, no matter how many so-called ‘cool’ experiment you made, it just won’t benefit you in any way if you don’t have any interest in them. Another reason to lose or not having any interest at all – OUTDATED INFORMATION. Why would anyone want to waste their time learning things that no longer have any practical value just for the sake of ‘passing final exams’? Well, be prepared to see your CGPA going down consistently every semester.

#3. YOU OVER-COMMIT YOURSELF TO SOMETHING OTHER THAN YOUR STUDIES (i.e., DRAMA CLUB)

Everybody will get stressed over something at some point. Be it that annoying assignment that needs to be finished by the end of the semester, or some tutorial questions that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, or maybe, some annoying dude who thinks that he’s smarter than Einstein walking around campus, showing off his ‘intelligence’ to just about anyone. Whatever it is, we need something to wind down or take our focus away from the stress such as joining a club you like. But, let’s say, because whatever it is that you do beside studies seem to be something you feel worthy of your entire time, you over-commit yourself into spending time doing whatever it is you like. You’d even forgot your purpose of attending university in the first place which is to study until about, two weeks before the finals and you don’t even remember the 1st chapter of a lot of subjects. Well, congratulations. You’re now qualified to participate in a lecture-cramming marathon.

#4. YOU ENJOYED AT LEAST ONE NON-ENGINEERING SUBJECT (i.e., ENGLISH) MORE THAN ALMOST ALL OF THE ENGINEERING SUBJECTS COMBINED

Similar to #3, except that this one’s technically involving studies. I’d be lying to you right now if I don’t have at least one favourite subject. But trust me, if you hate engineering and there’s one non-engineering subject you need to take in order to pass, chances are, you’ll end up over-studying yourself over the other, more important engineering subjects. If not, God bless your soul, then.

#5. YOU HATE YOUR PARENTS FOR FORCING YOU TO PURSUE ENGINEERING IN THE FIRST PLACE

Also known as “The Asian Dilemma”, where one is torn between personal choice and filial piety. Remember when you wanted to be a musician, only to have your dad ridicule your ambition, just because ‘everyone’ says that there’s no future in music? Yet, he forced you to take engineering, not because you’ll like it but because it is a very prospective career that pays very, very well and also it gives your parents some bragging rights to some other families. You reluctantly agreed to give it a try, only to find that you’re gradually hating every single moment of it because YOU can’t foresee your future as an engineer. So, your contempt for your parents grows stronger, even though you love them and you’re trying your best to make it. This clash of conflicting emotions will eventally get a hold of you when you are clinically depressed.

There you have it. If any of these points resemble your problem, I say you’d better get out of there. Remember, it is best that you pursue a career that suits your passion.

Everyone has problems with relationships, but not everyone knows how to deal with them and keep them healthy and strong. This article will help you better understand what happens with your partner.

Anyone who has ever been in a relationship knows how much troubles it can bring for couples. When you start to give your confidence, heart and attention to another person, and visa versa, changes will start to occur in your relationship whether you like it or not. Which problems to expect due to this change depends on you and your partner but the sooner you understand how to build back up your relationship, the easier it will be to maintain or save it. The relationship between two people is like a flower. You have to water it and take care of it so that it can grow and flourish. If you don’t, the flower will vanish, just like your relationship. So the main key for a healthy relationship is, working on it constantly, build it up as much as you can and nurture it. You remember those small signs of attention like unexpected kisses, little gifts, which you give at the beginning of the relationship? Well, those are the things that make your partner smile and which should never fade away. Another key to a happy relationship is to talk when something bothers you. Talk to you partner about this dissatisfaction and do this using a normal tone of voice. In stead of blaming each other, offer a deal/compromise. Remember that if you keep quite about the problem it will not disappear but will instead accumulate until it erupts into a argument which is then much harder to solve. Another advice is not to play games with the feelings of your partner. He is not an opponent but like the word itself says “PARTNER”.

Do not be afraid to show your vulnerability. Maybe you believe that big boys don’t cry or that only cold blooded women succeed in this world. This is probably true when it comes to your attitude towards the world but not when your partner is concerned. Another key thing to a happy relationship is “acceptance”. You have to adjust to each other and accept him/her with all of his or her faults. Of course, this does not mean you have to put up with his laziness or messiness. Also try to find common interests so that you can spend as much possible time together. Find some time during the week which is reserved just for you two.

Remember, your satisfaction with the relationship, as well as the satisfaction of your partner will contribute to mutual satisfaction and successful relationship.

Love and signs.

10 Tested Signs He’s in Love

He’s forgotten his ex- for most of us, more than not, a breakup is followed by a significant amount of time spent about our ex and wondering whether or not we made the right decision in going our separate ways. Depending on how long the two of you were together, these doubts can resurface again and again. A man is most likely sure he made the right decision however when the thought of getting back together with his ex is the furthest thing from his mind

He can’t stop thinking about you- he is consumed by thoughts of you. You are the last thing on his mind when he wakes up

He cares about you- when a man is in love with a woman, he wants to know all about her. Who she is, thinks, what makes her laugh and happy. He truly cares about her and her feelings. If a man truly loves a woman, he feels bad if she had a bad day or upset about something

You have great chemistry- you can’t be in love with someone with whom you have no chemistry. If you seem to always be on the same wave length, and think in similar ways, that’s a great sign

He doesn’t notice other women as much- although he can’t help noticing a beautiful woman when one walks by, when he’s in love, some of them tend to slip under the radar, while others just place in comparison to you. Furthermore, he doesn’t seem to be flirting half as much used to do. He is slowly realizing that you are often the only woman in the room who matters

He doesn’t mind compromising- there are times when he wants his way, but with you it’s different. Not that you ask him to, but he doesn’t mind missing his friends to be with you. And he finds himself trying to incorporate you into his plans or altering them to accommodate you

Others priorities take a back seat- his interest in work, and workaholic tendency of bringing his work on weekends to get ahead now seems a bit excessive to him. He ever-important to do list seems quiet stagnant these days, being with you always manages to render his other plans and obligations

He love spending time with you- he looks forward to seeing you, and doesn’t care much about what the two of you will be doing. He goes for a walk with you, in the evening.

Furthermore, when you are not together, he misses you and wishes you were spending time together

He starts thinking about the future and you are in it- it used to be that the future with a woman meant his date on weekends, but, with you, the future seems infinite. Not only does he plans to see you this weekend, but he wants to see you a year from now as well

You are his thoughts- he calls you during the day just because he was thinking of you or picks up something at the spur of the moment because he thought you’d like it or it reminded him of you

Ever wonder if someone you were talking to was lying? Here are some telltale signs to show you if they are.

Ever wonder if someone you were talking to was lying? Most people, when they are sitting across from someone they care about, want to know if said person is lying about something. Or if you are trying to get information from someone or solve a crime, you must know who is lying and who isn’t. Here are some telltale signs to show you if they are.

1. Repeating certain things unecessarily. Sometimes, if someone is lying, they feel the need to keep repeating something, because in their mind, that gets the point across. Plus, they are most likely already feeling guilty, and they want to feel innocent. Repeating it makes them feel that they did nothing wrong, and that you believe they did nothing wrong.

2. Never using the word “I”. More often than not, if you ask someone a question and they tell you a fabricated story that is a lie, they will avoid using personal pronouns that refer to them selves (I, me, myself).

3. A non-consistent story. Once you have heard there story, move onto something else for a couple of minutes then ask them to repeat their story. Or you can ask them to repeat it right away; it doesn’t usually matter that much. Oftentimes, the liar will add or take out details that he/she thinks will make him look more innocent, or he will change his story a lot. You asking him for his story again makes him think you are suspicious of him, and he wants to fix that.

4. Unecessary movement. Some people when they lie tend to move around a lot or fidget, often repeating one movement continuously. However, I don’t like to rely on this because some people are naturally very fidgety. I myself find it very hard to sit completely still, even when not lying or under interrogation.

5. Darting eyes. More often than not, a lying person wil find it difficult to meet your eyes. Therefore, he will probably look around the room a lot, meet your eyes for a second, then keep darting his eyes around the room again. Some people, however, are very good at lying, and can meet your eyes no matter what they say.

6. I don’t really know what to call this one, but pretty much all people do something every time they lie, no matter what. Some people smallow a lot, some people’s adam’s apple bobs. Some people’s mouths or eyebrows or ears twitch. It all depends on the person, and unless you are incredibly good at what you do (interrogating and studying people) or you know them very well, I’m not gonna lie (no pun intended), you probably won’t notice their strange habit.

There you have it. Six signs that someone is lying. However, some people, as said before, are very good liars and you won’t notice any of these with them. Most people are not that good, though, and you will see at least one or two of the above signs when they lie. Just keep practicing weeding out the liars and the innocents. Good luck!
