Four ways frightened mobs flee from danger - and how you'll die if you don't escape.

Set your emotional dial, for a moment, to panic: Someone shouts “Fire!” in a crowded theater. Your hands tremble, your pulse a race, a cold sweat spreads across your back. You’re trapped with hundreds of others. What would you do to escape? Scientists and architects think they know. They have long had mathematical models that predict crowd behavior, but testing was always a problem, until now. In an article in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers simulated a mass exodus by dropping mice into a tub of water. The models held up. The mice? Don’t ask. – Thomas Hayden

Herding

•	What happens: Disaster gives voice to your inner sheep; people follow a crowd to an open door even if other exits are clog-free.
•	Cause: Most people head for the door they used to get in. The Rhode Island nightclub that burned years ago had four exits, but most of the bodies were found around the front door.

•	How you’ll die: A fleeing crowd pushes as one; the resulting pressure is like a back-walk massage from a sumo wrestler. Ribs crack, organs squish, and the air squirts out of your lungs like ketchup from a foil packet.
•	The fix: Scope out a couple of alternate escape routes before disaster strikes – why do you think the nice flight attendant shows you the exits on the airplane?

Image via Wikipedia

Pedestrian Arch Formation

•	What happens: It’s the Three Stooges effect: The door is wide enough for only one, but everyone wants to be first. More stooges give you a semicircle of gridlock as everyone seeks the shortest straight-line vector to the exit.
•	Cause: People are sticky – they wedge into the area in front of the doorway like a cork. The exit clogs, with intermittent bursts of escapees when force exceeds friction.
•	How you’ll die: Trapped behind injured neighbors or a doofus who insists others go first, you’ll be jostled in place like a grain of sand in an hourglass.
•	The fix: A column a few feet in front of the exit can help break up an arch, splitting the jam into smoothly flowing streams. Being first in line helps, too – lingering near the exits during a show isn’t just cool; it can save your life.

Disruptive Interference

•	What happens: Two doors, two pedestrian arches – if they overlap, chaos ensues at the junction.
•	Cause: Your eyes are on the exit, not the bodies in front of you.
•	How you’ll die: In a fire, if the crushing doesn’t get you, toxic gases probably will. The poisonous-fume hit parade includes carbon monoxide and super-deadly phosgene. “One or two whiffs of phosgene and you’re down,” says one firefighter.
•	The fix: Two doors are better than one, but arches can spread all the way across narrow rooms. Architects should put doors at opposite ends of the room. And if you’re in the scrum, try not to freak out. The exit throughput rate drops as the panic level climbs.

Wall Seeking

•	What happens: Some of the herds peel-off on their own; they end up creeping along the edges of the room.
•	Cause: Rugged individualists know that in the midst of a panic, the mob is the worst place to be. They also know that walls are inevitably interrupted by exits.
•	How you’ll die: Scared and alone. If you miss the exit or go the wrong way along the perimeter, whatever you’re running from will get you. If too many individualists have the same plan, you’ll bump into them, slowing your escape.
•	The fix: Better exit indicators – bright, flashing lights at exits and along floors; public address systems; and loud electric horns.

Life is what you make it.

For some singles, life is not easy. According to recent figures, 200 million adults in Europe are single. Twenty five percent of all adult men and thirty five percent of all adult women are walking through life alone. With longer life spans and the increasing divorce rate, the number is sure to rise.

Many of them don’t live alone by choice. Death, an unwanted divorce, or never having found the “right person”, has left them to face the pressures of life on their own.

Three Major Categories of those who Walk Alone

The Unmarried

Many men and women take the deliberate choice to remain single – and they are happy with it. Some choose to walk alone for physical problems, fear of sexual relationship, and apprehension about the total commitment that marriage demands the life of unmarried singles carries with it certain dangers, first is that of WITHDRAWAL. The one who withdraws himself/herself from people is inclined to lose perspective on life in general. SELFISHNESS is the second. Accustomed to making choices for herself/himself, he/she decides alone how the money and time is spent. PURPOSELESSNESS is the third, because this single has no children, no marital partner and he/she is readily able to satisfy material needs, one finds it easy to drift through life without moving toward any meaningful goals.
It’s wrong to categorize singles as losers, misfits, or abnormal. They are people with needs – just like anyone else.

The Divorced

Every person who has ever been divorced can testify to the severe pain and heartache involved. There’s anguish in being rejected by the one to whom you’ve entrusted your love and life. The loneliness, fear and hurt are deep and real. The divorced person often is convinced that he/she could never be happy again.

There are 3 stages in rebounding from a divorce:

The Shock Stage. You are numb from the experience; your emotions seem powerless to handle it. You are in no condition to make any lifelong decisions. Most of the time, you are simply going through the motions, making time until you can gather your thoughts and feelings are able to face reality once again.

The Adjustment Stage. Here, you begin to accept the realities of your situation. You have become aware that life must go on, though it seems impossible. You learn to cope with emotional wounds. You’re more realistic about finances, the educational needs of your children and your own vocation.

The Growth Stage. You become positive about managing your own affairs and do better and better at becoming the mature, well adjusted person you’d like to be.

During these 3 stage process of adjustment, you gradually became aware of the things you must do to make life meaningful and enjoyable and begin to do something about them.

The Widowed

The adjustment to living alone can be made easier by the following suggestions:

Express your Grief. For those who mourn, such emotional release brings peace and the ability to accept the loss with some degree of dignity and composure. Occasionally, however, the surviving wife or husband keep their feelings bottled up inside. They maintained composure in the memorial service. But after a few weeks or months, they go to pieces.

Acknowledge that Life goes on. When a love one is taken by death, life oftentimes, seems to lose all meaning for the survivor. This is the time that you must discipline yourself to recognize that life goes on. Each new day offers you fresh challenges. There’s work to be done, children to be cared for and nurtured, and many, many more.

Accept your New Role. The sooner the surviving spouse see and accept their new role – as walking through life alone – the sooner they can adjust to it.

Re-enter Society. Decide to become involved with your friends and relatives, to enter into society again. As you relax and enjoy such occasions, your grief will begin to fade. You’ll be soon find life more much brighter.

If you are one who walks alone, as you follow these suggestions, you will not only benefit from these, but also your loved one.

The love of money is the root of all evils. For official use only, never love it.

In modern societies, money is a basic necessity of life. Few civilized cultures function on a barter system nowadays. Consequently, we must all obtain a certain amount of money simply to survive, to buy food and clothing, to pay the rent or house payment; electric and water bills, to put gas in the car, and to pay a host of other ordinary expenses. Even if you have no desire to get rich, it still takes a substantial amount of money just to make ends meet each month, and for many people the money runs out long before the month does.

The making of money and the acquiring of material goods dominate the activities of many people during the day as well as their dreams at night. The problem is that most people can never get enough money to be satisfied. The answer to the question, “How much is enough?” invariably comes back, “Just a little more”. The term greed means simply, “a consuming desire to have more”. It has the nuance of a grasping for more, a lust to acquire. Some of the most selfish people you will ever meet are not rich people, but people who want to be rich as quickly as possible. They may not be extremely poor, middle class, or moderately wealthy, but the insatiable desire for material wealth can turn them into conniving pernicious people.

Causes of Financial Insecurity

•	Living beyond our means
Our budget must never exceed our income. The pressure of mass media advertising which says, “You just got to have this or that because life will stop if you don’t have the latest of everything.” Another pressure is keeping up with our neighbors. Our neighbor buys something and we have to have one too. The result: debt like a sinister monster creeps up on our blind side, threatening our future and our house.
•	Living unrealistically
This kind of life depends so much in debt because they didn’t have the exact amount of money to buy on cash basis. They don’t accept the reality and don’t know how much they owe or what interest they are paying. They threw away bills unopened because they don’t have the money to pay.
•	Living without help
Get help from a trusted friend, who had good friends or friend who is a good businessman or a banker who will teach you not to borrow anymore money.
• Living and not asking yourself questions
Questions like these must be answered by you truthfully:
a.	Can I afford it?
b.	Do I need it?
c.	Is it the best investment?
d.	What would I do if I can’t pay it?
e.	Am I buying items that will depreciate in value or a depreciating item?

Greed and lust for the power purchased by money can control a person’s thoughts, actions and attitudes all the way. The love of money, the quest for it, the extent to which we are willing to go for it, is a telling indicator of how just tight a hold of money has on us.

People often say there is nothing wrong with having money; it is when money has us, that the problems occur. And that is true. Yet many of us tragically miscalculate the strength of the stranglehold money has on our lives, not to mention the tightness which we clinched our fists around our money or checkbooks. We think we control money, but the truth is that money is choking the life out of us, while we foolishly continue to grasp for it.
