The right choice or the life choice. A personal view of the world today and the ongoing fight between Pro-Life and Pro-Choice. Who is responsible and why.

I am an individual that believes in pro-life. Pro-life when it comes to my own personal situation. If confronted in the off chance I got pregnant, even if it meant I would surely die going full term to give birth, or the child would have any type of birth defect, I would still have that child. Not because of any moral or religious belief that all life begins at conception but because that child had meaning to my own life and a lesson for me to garner. Although I believe in pro-life for my own situation doesn’t mean I do not believe another woman has to follow by my example. Every woman has that right to decide on her own what will happen to her body. I am one of many that hold that view. Yet, today I feel we are past the point where this issue should be a debate at all.

Medical science has advanced to a point that women should never have to consider the life altering event of abortion, except in extreme conditions, as an option. We have “come a long way baby” from being able to take a pill to prevent pregnancies (if one remembered to do so daily), invasive and rudimentary I.U.D.’s, slow acting anti-spermicidal creams, along with a variety of other methods less than effective or ultimately life threatening. Yes, we have “come a long way…”.

Everyday the media, compliments of varied pharmaceutical companies, tell the women of the world we no longer have to be burdened with the process of being women. Medication now can be taken to stave off the monthly inconvenience of a woman’s natural cycle. (Long range studies of the possible consequences and effects the body experiences by disrupting the natural process are not as yet available. To me it seems only logical there are possibly certain severe ramifications when a natural bodily process is disrupted or changed.) Shots and non-invasive implants under the skin are now the most common use of birth control. Total “no brainier”. For those who protected for any one of numerous reasons or circumstances there is the morning after pill. It almost seems like all of the bases have been covered when it comes to preventing an un-planned or un-wanted pregnancy. Almost.

People are at the fore front of this issue (of course) and are keeping it alive for no other reason than simple puritanical mentalities. Where science has given us solutions to avoid the creation and destruction of viable life. The ultra-conservative and moral majority do their utmost to prevent the information or the availability of alternative options be provided to our most vulnerable and susceptible individuals. Poor, young, uneducated, and subservient. The leaders of the pro-choice and moral majority will argue that they do no such thing. Yet, like the media that has blocks of time bought by pharmaceutical companies that advertise the convenience of being the “Modern woman”, even they blanch when it comes to advertising birth control. Regulating it to time slots that are late in the evening or focusing on life styles of women that are career driven and/or morally questionable. Granted, there are networks that fly in the face of opposition and do what is needed to give woman information on choices if only by a commercial but more side with caution when it come to feeling the wrath of the strong and influential Moral Majority. The hypocrisies here astonish even the most liberal minded people.

I understand the ideology of those that want to keep sex education out of the schools and leave it where “it belongs” in the home. Yet, many then neglect to give enough information to our youths besides “abstaining” resulting in a predicament they were trying to avoid in the first place. Full knowledge of options should never be viewed as giving permission or approval for our youth to be sexually active. Given the chance, trust, and information the youth of our culture will usually make the right choice. As a parent and a friend of other parents, I have seen and experienced first hand the consequences of denying a teenager the opportunity to prove they can be trusted to make the right decision. We underestimate our youth. More than once they have stood up and taken on more difficult issues than this. To assume we as parents need to be in control when it comes to sex or birth control, we begin to slide down a slippery slope. Give them choice and information then you’ll sleep better at night.

We then come to influential people that stand on pulpits, chair on counsels and committees, preside over communities and countries, control certain religions, or own businesses that believe their values are all that matter. Dictating what should be available regardless of the situation. The solution here lies with people themselves and if they will tolerate it or like the lemming follow the herd over the cliff. It may seem I have strayed from the topic at hand but it all ties in.

Education is essential. Be it in school, the home, medical practitioners, counselors, and yes, even at the planned parenthood clinic around the corner. Saying no to birth control in any form is ultimately saying yes to abortion. A sad last resort used by many woman and young girls because what should be available without stigma is totted as the practice of one with loose morals, lost faith, and ignorance. What a sad state of affairs when we argue about life and the right to it only to turn around and say no to the education that can prevent the last resort.

In this day of medical advancements the issue of abortion should now be at an end. Used only in extreme circumstances. Woman of all ages and types should be given the information needed to make the right choice without persecution. Those who can not afford the birth control of their choice, make it available to them.

It may seem a contradiction but in truth its just plan common sense. If women want the right to choose what happens to their bodies they must take the responsibility from the gate. Don’t wait until you have to got a clinic or doctor to end a “Mistake”. Don’t depend on the man to carry a condom or believe he had a vasectomy. It is your body, you should show the same interest and concern what is going into your body in sexual contact as you would with the food going into your mouth.

Women have so many different options today when it comes to her body and it’s reproduction of life. In this day and age there is virtually a pill for everything. Huge strides have been made with varying forms of birth control and controlling a females menstrual cycle. Making it possible for women to decide when it will be convenient to have their Periods or become pregnant. No longer are the majority of women trapped into trying to remember to take a little pill every morning to prevent an un-wanted pregnancy. Having to prepare ones self prior to intercourse. Or keeping track on calendars the days most likely to conceive. On the contrary. From implants, patches, shots, to a morning after pill the medical community pretty much has the situation covered. There really isn’t any thinking to it. It’s a total no brainier even for the most forgetful among us. Yet, millions of innocent lives are still being trashed.

In regards to Pro-Life, I find that the fundamental tenets of this organization to be out of touch, unrealistic, and to a certain degree hypercritical. To say all life has worth then to deny a woman’s voice to her own body inadvertently promotes the “Genocide of Innocence” they so vehemently oppose. For the majority of Pro-Life it is the act of abortions itself that polarizes their campaign. Individuals who respect the value of life from the inception without complications morally, ethically, or medically I have no issue with. It is the morally intrusive I buttheads with.

It is Organized Religions and those who ignorantly believe the lack of information on sex and reproduction offered to our youth in schools or other institutions some how “protects” them. Then refuse our youth educated options besides abstinence as the only true choice and taught to them in the home as the preferred location of such education. This may work for some but for the most part fails miserably. Too many refuse to even consider studies and statistics that point out this line of thinking , NOT giving all the information or options, contributes to the problem.

Then there is the idea that any type of birth control denies the intended purpose the human body was intended for by the “Creator”. Sex is for reproduction only. I find the very idea of this line of thinking not only unrealistic but offensive. “Go forth and multiply.” is the basis for the beginning of the human race (if you subscribe to that line of thought), but Not in this modern day and age of over-population, limited natural resources, and un-equal standard of life.

For all those that place great stock in that one book so many rule their life by. The Creator thought highly enough of us to give us reason. We were given CHOICE by the Creator ALONE. Individual CHOICE. Each one of us has the RIGHT to choose, good, bad, or indifferent the decisions that make or break our life. Not one person or entity has the power to take that away.

So there it is. If you want to choose, be responsible enough from the gate to earn that choice. Get educated. Review your options. Be proactive. Abortion should only be a “last resort, no hope” solution.

Believe all life has worth? Then do not place blocks and throw stones at those lives already in motion. Do not deny education and options. The more of us that lend a hand to the solution to the problem, lends a hand to a valued life yet lived.

Before either side of this issue decides to respond to what I have written I want you to know that I am a Christian. A Realistic Christian. I do not pretend or am I willing to interpret the Creator’s intent for each individual life. That is for the Creator alone. The rest is just best guessing done by fallible humans and personally, I have faith God knows what he’s doing. In my life I would never have an abortion regardless of the circumstances but I refuse to pass judgment or try to prevent another woman that chose’s otherwise.

Remember, the key word here is CHOICE. Something given to us by one greater than any one person living or lived. To intrude on one’s CHOICE is to intrude on the will of God. Only God can decide the worthyness of each individual Soul. Only each individual can save or condem their own Soul. To profess the ability to do otherwise, you place yourself above God.
