Socialization: Socialization is a process where individuals learn the culture of their society, is that the social learning process and as such is a continuous process. Without undergoing this process, a person like no human being is defined as normal by the standards of their society, such as the so-called “wolf children Midnapore” two women aged between two and eight years was found in a cave by wolves in Bengali in 1920. They walked on all fours, prefer a diet of raw meat, howling like wolves and lacked any form of expression. An example shows that socialization involving prolonged interaction with adults is important not only for the installation of new members of society, but also the process of being truly human.Culture: Ralph Linton, “The culture of a society is the lifestyle of its members, the collection of ideas and habits to learn, share and transmit from generation to generation.Because humans have the instinct to guide their actions, their behavior should be based on guidelines that are taught. But for a society to function effectively, these guidelines are shared by its members. Culture has two important features: first you learn, the second place shared. Without it there would be no human society.Culture defines accepted forms of behavior for members of a particular society. These definitions differ from one society to another. All societies have to deal with common problems such as the problem of employees, as the very young and the elderly. However, solutions to these problems, culturally determined. It should be noted that the solutions offered by a company may well be regarded as unsustainable by members of other companies, for example, in certain circumstances, “child murder and geronticide” was practiced by some groups of Australian Aborigines Caribou Eskimos and Indians.

Standards: The rules are the guidelines that take place directly in specific situations. There is a specific action that defines acceptable and appropriate behavior in various situations, such as dress rules that vary from one society to another.

The rules enforced by positive and negative sanctions than rewards and punishments. Sanctions can be informal, such as approval or disapproval vision, or formally, as a reward or a penalty imposed by a government agency.Generally, the threat of negative sanctions is sufficient to impose a normative behavior. But an admiring gaze of a word of praise or an encouraging smile provides rewards for conformity to social norms.Values: In contrast to the rules on the establishment of specific guidelines for behavior, Valu es provide more general guidance.A value is a belief that something is good and desirable. It defines what is important, interesting and worth fighting for. In the West, for example, the value of materialism motivates people to invest time and energy to produce and acquire property.Sioux in the form of assets to appreciate the bounty, would Western societies for individuals to buy, at best, be regarded as special and will probably be condemned as selfish and antisocial catch. Norms and values are essential for human functioning.Primary socialization, probably the most important aspect of socialization takes place in childhood, usually in the family. With family, the child learns the language and many basic patterns in their society.

Finally, agents of socialization system of family education, peer group, the Working Group and the media.

There are a lot of schools that have great after school programs that can benefit your kid(s).

Children grow up in a society that demands expertise in everything. You really cannot sit back and decide that learning from textbooks is enough for the overall development of your child. It’s the age of specialization and your child cannot afford to miss out on this window of opportunity. So, scour your locality for the most advantageous programs and enroll them for the ones you think are the best.

After school programs are basically designed to develop a talent or a skill that is ignored by regular schools. These programs could be educational or recreational in nature. Whatever type they are, they basically aim to keep the child active and interested.

The most important advantage of a good after school program is that it widens your child’s area of interests. He or she is introduced to new things, sometimes interesting, sometimes challenging. Mastering a new art form or a new skill increases the child’s self-esteem. It also allows you to introduce your child to new career options. A child attending a music class may decide that she likes it so much that she wants to make a career out of it in the long run.

Socialization is another great advantage of after school programs. Children get to meet others who share their interests and make new friendships. An acting class or a soccer class can be lots of fun. Many of these programs coach children for performances or matches. Performing on stage or playing a match can be a great experience for a young child.

After school programs keep your teenager busy. He or she thus has some amount of protection from destructive habits like drugs and alcohol. Surveys indicate that children who are kept busy through diverse absorbing activities are less prone to abuse, depression and burnout. Significant increase in achievement and attendance and a reduction in drop out rates are other advantages of a good after school programs.

Most after school programs have children interacting with one or more adult. This allows them to benefit from positive relationships with adults. Children often find it difficult to confide in parents and teachers, but may open up with other adults.

Many children are put into recreational after school programs so that they reduce weight and remain healthy. A newly emerging trend shows that about 15% children below the age of 16 are obese. Parents who cannot put their children on a strict diet resort to sports and games to burn fat. With cases of child diabetes on the increase, this has become a prime focus of many after school programs.

A good after school program has many benefits. It keeps the child entertained as well as busy, and thus prevents children from becoming addicted to TVs and PCs. By giving them ways to burn up their excess energy and explore their creativity, after school programs help to shape the overall personality of the child.

Viewing PDA – Public Display of Affection.

You’re at cinema then the couple sits down in front of you. The girl rests her head on the guy’s shoulder. He kisses her hair, they hold hands and soon show more interest as the movie ends.

Yes, we have witnessed. Some may even have participated. We consider it sweet when two doves cuddling. But how do we react when the issue of cuddling concerns our own specie?

To address is the definition of the matter. What exactly Public Display of Affection is? Or more appropriately, where does the boundary of public etiquette lie in this manner? PDA can range everywhere. It may range from a whisper to a shout, from a touch of the hands to a touch somewhere else. Yes, it is a way of showing affection to your partner as a couple; it could be as simple as a mother hugging her son or two friends holding hands. However, we usually think of PDA in more sexual sense. Holding hands, hugging, petting, and kissing are all forms of attachment but did the question “am I setting a good example to the people around me especially to the youth?” ever came up to your head?

I am a 24 year-old educator, and one who is aware of my surroundings. I have seen this act in malls, streets and even in some campuses I am supervising and yes, I view it as an inappropriate behavior. Why? Let’s cite these following reasons.

It can be a distraction which can be very intimidating. Children that may witness such behavior tend to imitate or possibly do the same thing in their teenage years. Their juvenile minds are fed up with such physical interaction towards the opposite sex and often seem to echo their school years into adult life creating uncomfortable feelings at sight of PDA. No wonder why schools band pairing to avoid such effect? Another thing is that the school, a park, or even a mall is not a place for hugging, kissing, or holding hands but places for learning and relaxing respectively. The uncomfortable feeling some people experience at the sight of PDA can also cross cultural boundaries. What is acceptable to people in one culture may not be acceptable to other.

We all know what PDA is. We all have seen it. We all have done it: When we held an aunt’s hand in the supermarket; when, as children, we kissed each other and goodbye in the middle of the street; when, as adolescents, we let our boyfriends (or girlfriend) hold our hands in the theatres; and when, as adults, we kiss our lovers before they board a plane. We have all committed the act of PDA. So how much is too much? It depends on how we were raised. Did we see our parents commit act of PDA? And what were our school guidelines regarding PDA? These are all important in determining how much is too much when it comes to PDA. In the end, it seems the question of how much is too much is better put another way. So next time you are sitting in the theatre and that couple mentioned earlier sits down beside you, see how long it take for you to get uncomfortable. Now you know how much is too much that this matter has to be done at the right place at the right time.

How technology sometimes causes a disconnect between the younger generations and the older ones.

Technology has greatly evolved over time. This is especially true in the last ten to fifteen years. Up until this point people would communicate face to face in person, as opposed to over the internet. Written communication would take days to travel across the world rather than just a few seconds. Many of the older generations became accustomed to these older methods of communication and socialization while the younger generations know only these newer, instant forms of communication. Here lies the disconnect between not only many children and their parents, but between entire age groups.

Some people say that technology has isolated the world, when in fact it has broadened many social horizons. For instance, people with uncommon hobbies can easily find an online forum where they can meet a population of people that share similar interests. Another fine example is the passive socialization that online games can bring, while some people take video gaming too seriously, many people use it as a tool to simply relax and have some friendly competition with their friends while in the comfort of their own homes. The internet has also helped many friends that may be living vast distances apart keep in touch by using a variety of social networks to share opinions as well as photos. These uses of technology are often overlooked by an older generation, or simply rejected because they are different than they socialization methods that they grew up with.

There are downsides to this technological revolution though. For example, all of the positive reasons listed above can be taken too extremely and have the inverse effect on people. Technology, while giving people to the ability to connect over long distances, can also cause people to cut themselves off from the real world. Digital audio players are the most effective tool at isolating individuals. Everyone has seen that person walking down the street or sitting in a public place with earbuds in, completely ignoring what is going on around them, or that person who interrupts conversation with someone to reply to a text message. It is these reasons that older generations tend to look down on the current one, as well as the present technology revolution. It causes people to completely ignore the basic social skills that they have learned through interacting with society.

In this rapidly moving world where people rarely pause simply to stay hello, we need to keep in mind that technology is an extension of your social life, not the basis of it. Hopefully the older generations will learn this and become a little more comfortable with the way that younger generations communicate and spend their time, otherwise technology is simply having the opposite effect of what it was intended to do.

Early this morning, I posted a new thread at a forum. It’s all about my secret crush. The thread was published automatically. And then I logged out and proceeded to my other forum groups. An hour later, I went back to that forum but what surprised me - I found my item was removed off from the list. The next thing I did I sent off a message to our administrator for his explanation.

And G, our administrator replied, “I removed your post about your Secret Crush. I don’t think it’s a good idea to announce that to people and I also think it would make the person very uncomfortable. It’s okay to be friendly to people but please keep it at that.” Thank you, G.

Image via Wikipedia

I reread my thread that I saved in a folder to look for what’s wrong for this item. What I found actually was this thread was all about reality. In fact I never mentioned for a name as it against the rule in the forum. Inside me was a question, “Are we really growing up for reality? How much we could deal with it?”

After that rejection, I found myself uncomfortable thinking about for my next postings… they might be all rejected as well. Anyway, the show must go on. The below was my thread.

My Secret Crush

I suppose the admin would consider this topic to be discussed here and I invite the members in the forum to participate in the discussion for their honest views, opinions and advise and share the fun! My secret crush started in my first week here.

I understand that to get crush for someone here is just a normal feelings for a normal person. I like her. But this one is different. I can’t see her or speak to her in person but she’s always with us.

Honestly, I would admit, she’s my crush. But one thing I can’t tell you is “Who is this woman?” I know a lot about her. She’s good, honest, and thoughtful and she’s friendly person based from her postings.

I have feelings that most of you in the forum knew her so well. This is now the problem… It’s really hard to tell her that she’s really my crush. And this has troubled me so much. What should I do? Should I tell her? Or I should not tell her?

What roles do the family, the peer group, the school, the church, mass media and the workplace play in the process of socialization?

Chapter 5: Process of Socialization

What roles do the family, the peer group, the school, the church, mass media and the workplace play in the process of socialization?

The Family is the most influential group in child’s life. The parent give the moral guidance and discipline to the children. The child’s first experiences of affection, love, sense of belongingness, kindness, sympathy and courtesy comes from the family. The child can learn engagement in competitive, conflicting and cooperatives relationships with others, Decision-making, engagement in activities involving self-expression. Experimenting new ways of thinking, feeling and behaving, develop self-sufficiency and learn to be flexible and to get along with others in a hanging world. Sir Gil gave an example that a man cannot tell to her mother that he think that his girlfriend got pregnant. Instead of telling to parents, he would consult his peers for advice.

The School as a second home, teach the child to read, to write, to do arithmetic, rational thinking and right conduct. It is also in school where child develop their emotion and intellect. It is responsible for inculcating knowledge and skills which prepare them for adulthood and become productive and effective citizens of country. They aim to inculcate love of country, teach the duties of citizenship and develop moral character, personal discipline and scientific, technological and vocational efficiency.

In Church, the right and wrong are delineated and prescriptions of rewards and punishment are established. People are motivated to do what is good in order to be at peace with God. Children are taught to pray and lessons in fostering loving and harmonious relations with others in the family, neighborhood, school and the wider community are given.

Mass Media function to inform, entertain and educate. Children may imitate values which emphasize wealth, success or good looks. People learn to appreciate cultural products like language, arts, and literature through watching televisions. Our great professor explains the effect of telenovelas in the life of Filipinos. Most of the watcher can relate on the life of the protagonist and so the hope that they would somehow prevail at the end makes watching worthwhile. Filipinos use it as escape mechanism in the real life. It makes the personal problem lighter to handle because of the hope given by the show.

The Work Place is almost the final stage of learning and socializing to some. They learn the skills, knowledge and techniques needed in the job. People learn to be committing themselves in their work. The responsibilities are shouldered by people and knowing how to manage things correctly makes the people more productive and competitive.

...Just a blurb about my night out before Thanksgiving...

My Thanksgiving was a rather unexpected turn of events. My mom ruined the thought of turkey two days before and so I was in a turkey-less funk. I was all a blur as to what I was going to do. So in my daze I had decided to just work. I was going to work all day getting everything done so as not to have a single thing else to do the rest of the week. Apparently this was not the case.

The night before, being Wednesday I was asked to partake in fun and frolic. Yea, did I. I was not going to pass up a chance at doing anything that involved adult human interaction. As always, the day before a holiday, people go out to celebrate with their peeps before getting back to reality. So I was whisked away to the local bar around the corner. Mind you, I do not drink, but the company was worth it.

Walking through those well worn doors was like opening a present. You quite didn’t know what was behind it all, but the excitement of finding out was thrilling. With me, it was more like fear though. I don’t frequent bars or clubs…never have. I had only been to this particular place once before and that was to play a ridiculous game of pool. Oh, not that I think pool is ridiculous, just me playing pool is. Well, to my surprise, it looked far different than it had before. Maybe that was due to the day of the week or that there was karaoke going on, who knows. I was just pleasantly surprised. And that was a good thing.

I made my way to a little seating area right up front and hung on to the back of a tall chair. As is with me when my nerves set in…I just sort of stand around before snagging a seat. Tall chairs are my downfall. I always have an issue with them. I either can not get into them or out of them quite right, but somehow I manage. This chair was a breeze to maneuver and I plopped my short self into it. Beside me sat a semi familiar face. It was the very pregnant wife of my “captor’s” friend. I had met some of these folks previously at another corner bar. So it was not like I was going into a dark cave unknowing. Oh, I must have made a total fool of myself poking at her stomach and talking about crazy baby stuff. At some point she got up and sat some place else. I do wonder if she talked me up to be an annoying type.

Not that I was bored, because how would one be with karaoke going on. It was entertaining. And the driver of the chariot that brought me there was just the socialite…Singing, playing video bowling, downing the rounds and talking to friends, etc… I just hope I was not too much of an embarrassment to him. I don’t ever want to be “that” person. It is a strange balance one must keep together when adjusting to situations that you are not used to but willing to get used to. Being that I am pretty much the loner type, the social outcast, the weirdo…you would figure that I would be used to being ignored and left alone. But, no one wants to be invisible in a crowd. I just sat quietly and texted on my cell, actually doing work. That was my saving grace, but in retrospect I may have come off as rude. I hope that was not the case.

After much singing, none of which I did, and “hanging out”, we left. I hope we did not leave because of me. i would have stayed as long as need be. Just being out was nice. I so often do not get a chance to be social. Even if social means me just sitting in a bar watching everyone else doing their thing. I refuse to be a total hermit, maybe just a partial on

My perception on social Mirror and how we as individuals are affected by what the society thinks of us.

Social Mirror theory is yet another western concept. But I think it holds true as well even in Philippine Society.

This theory holds that we cannot have mirrors in the mind unless there are mirrors in society (Whitehead,2008). In a world of objects, we become aware of ourselves as an object among objects, of our bodies in contradistinction to other bodies (Gregory, 1970). Simply put, Social mirror suggests that what we think about ourselves and others were the result of what the society or what others think about each one of us.

This, I observe, applies to us Filipinos. But I would not speak in broad and comprehensive terms here. Although there could be discussion on profound societal issues i.e gender issues this is not really my purpose. I just like to point out that although it happens in our society this should not be the way to go. We should define who we really are and we should make a difference even in our own little microscopic way.

That said allow me relate some of my experience. I have a friend who always would worry about her flabby physical structure. She would say “I’m so fat” and this pronouncement unconsciously affected her lifestyle. She never played sports, and never ate her favorite foods. Apparently, her concept of being fat was the result of seeing slim women in television and other media. Her idea that playing sports is not for her, was the effect of certain instances wherein athletic buds would laugh at her, would tease her and would even tell her directly that “it does not look good on you.” While her self-imposed ban on eating her favorites was brought about by her relatives saying she should not eat ice cream, chocolate, and spaghetti because those foods will only make her a pig.

This example is relevant to other women’s quandary like “do I look fat, have I gained weight, how to loose sagging arms and alike.” Their notions were the effect of socialization, of what others by and large think about them.

Then I’ve read an irritating statement saying that a true guy should have a vice to be considered a real man. Honestly, this idea prompted me to write this. Probably that concept came from the idea of the society of what constitutes gender identity—what is considered masculine or feminine. I cannot blame him; he maybe has this delusion that a man must be alcoholic, chain-smoker, drug addict or womanizer to be a REAL MAN. His notion was the result of others’ idea of what a real man should be. In that line of thinking, since the society itself defines a vice to be a practice or habit considered immoral, is it alright then to assume that others require us to be immoral first to be a man…To be a real man? For not drinking alcohols or smoking cigarettes, are we to receive scornful derision?

NO! This is where I find it useful to know who you really are and to be different from what the society conceives about you. I agree that we cannot control external factors like what other people think. But we have an absolute power to control what we should think. After assessing or learning certain ideas, notions from others, we can put those in a sieve and choose what to believe in or better yet have your own idea. In this case, I am sure that having a vice is not my idea of being a real man.

As social mirror theory applies to us, there is no logical reason why we should not learn to perceive our own thoughts and feelings by living in a public world of thoughts and feelings. After all, it is all in the mind.
