Deterioration of a person's life slowly.

Seven years ago, I was living the dream. My life was picture perfect. Had a great job at an investment bank in New York, had two children, beautiful 5-bedroom home in a country setting with a lake, had a great loving and working husband and most important had my health. I hardly had enough time to spend at my beautiful home or with my family but I had it all. In but just a short moment in my life, everything changed.

It was the day I buried my mother-in-law and I had just stopped off to drop my my daughter’s luggage at my mom’s because she was saying goodbye before she went to college. As I rolled her luggage through the beautiful marlble floor foyer, I slipped backwards and hit my head on the marble floor and was knocked out unconscious. When I opened my eyes, there was my son and another man trying to get me up off the wet floor. My head had this massive knot and I had this enormous headache. Due to the inpending death in the family, I never called an ambulance and insisted I was fine. After saying my goodbyes, dealing with the guests at the burial, I went home still with a pounding headache.

Will not go into lengths about what happened in the last five years but what I will say is my lfe and body began to deteriorate. First, I was diagnosed with a reverse whiplash, where my neckbone was flipped reverse causing issues with my spine. This issue had an affect on my job because of the time I needed to take off for doctor visits and surgery to my spine. Of course, in the corporate world, who cares what you are going through. Nonetheless, the people at my job were so unbearable. They were looking for just about anything to fire me only because I wasn’t well. Must admit, even though it was my personal and vacation time I was taking, I needed to take the days sparatically to take care of myself medically; which eventually cost me my job.

Because I wasn’t making the money I was making before, we had to get rid up two cars, gym membership, cable, and anything we didn’t need. My husband, who loves all his toys was devastated when I had to return his Lincoln truck. We were going through our savings like water but I finally landed a job with the Senate a month later. That job only lasted 5 months, again because I hurt myself at work due to the previous injury in my spine. It was a whole year before I received Workers Compensation or Social Security Disability. During that time, we sold everything in our home just to have enough money to eat and have food. Our mortgage fell behind and we were afraid of losing our home.

A year later, things began to look up. My Workers Compensation and Social Security came through the same year, my mortgage was modified to my income. By this time, both my kids were out of the house. One was married with a child and the other one took a job in California. My husband during this seven years, had a horrible car accident that almost cost him his life at work. He too had spine issues but added by knee pain and arm pain.

I though my health was getting better and I recently found out I will have permanent nerve damage to my arms and hands. Still have issues with my spine and now having issues with my feet. Oddly enough although my body feels like its deteriorating, my spirit is up. What usually gets me sad is the fact that my hands don’t function they way they did before. I’m in constant pain, my nerves in my fingers and arms twitch and hurt and I’m always dropping and breaking things. Nobody knows how important your hands and arms are.

Seven years ago I had so much but didn’t realize the material things were not important. Seven years ago I didn’t appreciate my health and body. Now I look at every day as an opportunity to get better and better. My priorities have changed for the better even though it took nerve damage.

Remembrance Day is nearlly upon us, we should all remember our War Dead with honour. Not everyone is a born Warrior, there are medical reasons why some people cannot fight. I explain why in detail.

Would you Fight ,Flight or Freeze?

Remembrance Day is nearly upon us (November the 11th) I always buy a Poppy for Remembrance Day it’s the least anyone can do to honour our fallen hero’s from the 1st world War 1914-1918. Remembrance Day is not just for the WW1 its is too remember all our fallen comrades that gave up their lives to fight for our freedom

We are still living under the safe umbrella of their bravery. I am not in the military but my family does have a long history in the services. My great grandfather served in the trenches in France in WW1. My uncle served in the Royal Navy in WW2 and my father served in the Royal Air force and with my grandfather they served in the Local Defence Volunteers during WW2.

The Military life was not something that appealed to me at school leaving age, it was a life in Engineering for me. It is a matter of recorded history that not every serving Soldier or Fighter pilot or Naval Rating has an inbuilt killer instinct and posses the where with all to fight! During my research for my blog “WW2 Historic Aircraft” I happened upon a log entry by a Fighter Pilot during the Battle Of Britain

Within this recorded log, the Fighter pilot says,

“That amongst a flight of six aircraft only two could fire their machine guns at the German aircraft in the heat of battle”

I was surprised to learn this fact? Of course it is one pilots prospective of a typical battle scenario. I did some more digging and found this account of combatants and non-combatants to be a matter or recorded history. Of the six pilots two became Ace-Pilots having shot down at least 5 aircraft each. The account further states,

“The pilots that could not pull the triggers were used for spotting the enemy and reporting the where abouts of the German aircraft for me and my No2 to engage”

Further investigations reported the same type of behaviour amongst soldiers and sailors. Some soldiers would fire their weapon over the heads of the enemy and close their eyes. Now I am not reporting this as a criticism of any kind. I have been fortunate enough to have not been put into these situations of battle. I have no idea how I would behave? So in no way could I criticize anyone else.

When the Human body is faced with battle or danger it reacts in several ways. The Heart pumps faster the lungs breath more deeply. Adrenaline is released to boost muscle strength. Senses become heightened the sense of smell and visual acuity is increased. Some people report freezing to the spot in fear and can not move. A automated nervous reaction can literally stiffen someone’s spine and shaking uncontrollably is often reported.

Much more is known of the physical reaction to battle and fear than was known a hundred years ago. In WW1 British soldiers have been unceremoniously shot for cowardice and desertion. The reaction to Fight or Flight or Freeze is not always a conscious decision. So much of our bodily functions are automated. You may not physically be able to fight your body lets you down under severe stress

On the opposite side of the coin some men and women become extraordinarily brave and show amazing acts of selfless bravery. Training does help to overcome some of the fear and the need to Flight. Please do bear in mind not everyone is a natural warrior.

We should always remember our fallen comrades and forgive the men who through no fault of their own cannot fight no matter how hard they try and how much training they have had.

Do Mental Gymnastics for Better Memory

The hippocampus, a unique structure extending across the brain’s right and left hemispheres, is responsible for memory. Keeping it active with regular mental gymnastics such as quizzes, anagrams, crossword puzzles helps reduce brain fade and forgetfulness.

Sit Up Straight

You’ll maximize your IQ by sitting up straight. Poor posture crimps the supply of oxygen- bearing blood to the brain. The brain needs up to 30 times more blood than the rest of the body. Keeping your spine straight with head high and chin in when you walk, stand, and sit can clarify your thinking by 30 percent.

Take Memory Vitamins

Lecithin, a common food supplement made from soybeans and used as an additive in a variety of foods improves memory, say neurological disorders researchers. Lecithin is a rich source of choline, a B vitamin that is a building block for the neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. The lecithin you eat releases choline into your bloodstream, which in turn replenishes your brain’s supply.
