In everyday life today, gender is not a black and white subject. People are not are not always classified into the binary system of just "male" or just "female" anymore if they do not wish to be; there are many levels of gender that fall between a male identity and a female identity, and at least here at the University of Vermont, this fact is both recognized and accepted by most people. Although it is not blatantly obvious that most sports in the United States do not recognize differing gender identities, it is an issue that is at the very least, apparent to me and to my peers. It is very important to note that sports can be a great way for people to express themselves through creative expression and to showcase skill and prowess. However, certain sports have a way of only allowing people that fit the binary system to be accepted, and sports also are able to build and reinforce stereotypes.

People are able to express their gender identity mostly through their actions, decisions and style of dress or hairstyle, and in today’s world, differences in style of dress and personality are normal and widely accepted. However, there seems to be little room for these things on the field or on the court. Few sports are focused on allowing the player to show his or her own personality and style. As of now, there seems to be no place for a transgender individual in our sports. There are rules that state that men play with other men and women play against women. It is very black and white. Any person who doesn’t fit the exact mold of a man or a woman is not even considered in the rules to be eligible to play. If a transgender man tried to join a women’s tennis team, he would probably be confronted by many confused and outraged fans who think it is unfair for a man to play on a women’s team, although this individual does not necessarily consider himself a man. Similarly, if a transgender woman attempted to join a men’s football team, she would probably be confronted with many confused and angry fans who believe football is no place for a woman, even though the individual may not consider herself a woman. Unless a person fits into a completely masculine role in life or a totally feminine one, he or she will not currently be easily accepted into a sports team, but my interviewee and I have faith that our culture is shifting to become an even more accepting one.

I believe that each sport can be placed into one of three categories. There are the sports in which every person is dressed the same, looks the same and acts completely as a part of a team, and almost never as an individual; individuality seems to be lost in these sports. American football fits this mold well. The next level are those sports in which much importance is placed on personal performance, but there is still little actual personal expression. This category includes tennis. The last category includes the sports that allow their players to show their personalities in the uniform, costume or performance, and that also place emphasis on personal skill. Figure skating is the best example of this kind of sport.

There are almost no team sports that allow for any personal expression, whether it is gender identity-related or not. Team sports like football in America demand that you hand over your personality and individuality in exchange for the group personality. Sports like tennis are only slightly better because they show men and women almost as equals (uniform-wise and in the rules for games played by each sex), and allow each individual to demonstrate their personal skills. Figure skating is the only sport that we were able to think of that allows its participants to show off their personalities through costumes, music choices, and through skillful dance performances on the ice. In addition, skaters of both sexes are basically held to the same standards in competitions, so any different skill abilities between the sexes is ignored. Any sport that has rules and regulations that place an emphasis on separating male and female or require players to all dress one particular way is effectively hindering the expression of gender identity.

Every person cannot be classified using the old binary system of male or female anymore. Our society is allowing our differences to not only emerge, but be accepted or judged in today’s world. My interviewee and I feel that the people who do not fit the male-female mold are fairly accepted in everyday life, but there has not been a place established for them on the sports field. The only place someone can express their gender identity, style or skill level is in the figure skating rink. All other team sports, and even those like tennis that place more emphasis on personal performance, are not able to easily accept someone who is not purely male or female, or someone who wishes to express their personal identity.

This is the second article in the series of articles I am writing use my personal experiences to give tips and advice to those going into high school- or an one else in high school or even college that just want some tips about school and how to be a better person and student.

Freshman Year of High School: Extracurricular

This is the second article to my series about the freshman year of high school. In this article I am going to talk to you about the “extracurricular” part of high school (again this applies to pretty much everyone in high school).

I was only involved in one club /organization through my school and that was theatre. I was in all three of the plays my freshman year and stayed at school until 5:00pm pretty much every day for practice. And I loved every minute of it! I acquired some of my (if not all of my) best friends through theatre. I HIGHLY recommend getting into a club of some sort, whether its a club like anime; or sports like swim or track; or organizations like student council, GET INVOLVED. It makes you a ‘more rounded student/person’ so colleges like you a little bit more, and the even bigger plus- you get a whole bunch of really close, awesome friends who you will love!

The trick is to find something, whether it is a sport or a club, that YOU will enjoy. The rest follows. If you enjoy it and the other people there enjoy it, then more than likely ya’ll will enjoy a lot of same things, giving you some really close and great friendships that start and are connected on a little bit of a deeper level.

Tip: If you hear about or have an idea for a club that your school does not currently have, talk to your administrators about it and if they approve, find a sponsor for it and voila! You have a club, it’ll be easier if you get one or two other people to help you get it started, from there see if you can get it put on the announcements for the word gets spread fast and those who want to join, can! (P.s that will ALSO look great on college applications- “I started my freshman year and then ran the _______ club all four years of high school” ß Awesome!)

The most important thing is to HAVE FUN. Don’t NOT do something because of other people, even if those other people are your friends. Be YOU, if you want to join the swim team DO IT. If you want to join the ‘Glee club’ then DO IT. It doesn’t matter what your friends say because odds are you will find other (possibly even better) friends in the clubs you wish to join. (If they are REALLY your friends they will support you no matter what.)

Also, try out a little bit of everything, if you are slightly interested in joining something, go to a meeting or talk to someone who is in the club to see what it’s like. You may be surprised!

Being a part of something makes high school SO much more fun! Makes sure to check out the clubs at your school, you can even talk to your counselors about what clubs your school has available to you and find out who you need to contact for information about them. Don’t be that kid who goes to school and then goes home. Colleges don’t like that and honestly, YOU won’t like it. High school isn’t ALL about the academics- it’s about having FUN too, and being a more ‘well-rounded person’. So ENJOY high school while you have the chance, but don’t OVERLOAD yourself by signing up for 10 different clubs, find out how many times the clubs meet a month and on what days they meet, along with for how long. Make sure they don’t conflict OR take up all of your time. You need down time and time to keep up with your school work so I recommend joining the 3-5 you want to join THE MOST. And if you only want to join 1 or 2- that’s fine! As long as you are in something and enjoying it- that’s all that matters!

This is an employee relation update. In this article, there're six points about being a worker at a company I want you to read.

Have you ever considered what make a job? There are some important factors to consider when your working at a job.

I have found out at over-night retail jobs that employees have no night life. Their night life consist of working. There’s no time for adequate dating, sharing, or caring. An average full-time overnight-er is compensated for their time per hour than an day shift worker. Nights are not easy for everyone.

Night-shift has been found too be hard for many. Many found it hard too adjust to sleep habits. An full time over-night shift employee actually spends time each day of the week except one. Although you’re not spending totally a full eight hours on the job, you’re still working some hours on a given sixth day. An overnight-er actually has two nights off, but not a full two days off. A night-shifter may spend more time trying to recover sleep during the day off, rather than enjoying the day off shopping, cleaning, or going to the gym.

As a night-shift worker there are some important factors to remember. You need to set priorities when you estimate in your life what is important. I believe you can say, “Making money to pay bills is the most important”; Well therefore prevent from performing possible hobbies that can interfere with your job.

1. Hobbies: Have a hobby will prevent you from having a bored life. When you notice that your hobby is not appealing, maybe it’s time for another. I encountered co-workers who were excited about going to the gym. That’s a good thing, but months later, I can tell the gym performance seized. The question is why? Their answers may be, they found a relationship with someone which was the leading reasons for the gym, and not just for a work-out. Behaviour change can happen when a major event happen in their life.

I once I knew a co-worker who text-ed or called occasionally. But the phone calls seized and texts seized. The main reasons for the calls and the texts before was for reasons of boredom. But the reasons for the seized calls and texts was because the person found a mate, got married, and had children. So the modified life-style, also modified his habits and behaviour.

The human race naturally seeks completion where there’s void. Many night-shift co-workers may not have anyone at home to go home too. Many can find there life boring, time flying by fast, and single. Most employees that work at night, their spouses don’t want them missing throughout the night. But the family must work-it-out if the main source of the income is a night shift.

Try to avoid a hobby that could potential injury you or prevent you from working. Unless the hobby directly ties you to work. Example: A professional football player would be found in the gym, because it ties in with his work. But getting injured in a gym, affects his paycheck on the field, if he’s benched due to a physical injury.

2. Weekends: Another night-shift issue is working on the weekend. I found night shift workers when they’re young would wish one of the three major retail nights off. The three major weekend days are, Friday, Saturday, and Sundays. Most younger employees want one of those days off for their personal life. You will have priority if you considered all days were equal to you, and made yourself available for any day and time.

3.Sunday: The next issue about night-shift working into a Sunday, is the religious belief. Some employees want Sunday off or leave early, or get off on-time with no room for flexibility. They want to worship and go to church. A night-shift worker may find it hard to have worked that Saturday night into Sunday morning, and be back to work that night. If they go to church during that Sunday. You need to face the facts about retail businesses that operate on Sundays, the business first. They will staff the business with workers willing to work on Sunday to meet customer demands. Sometimes it requires bold steps to mention to the employer, you wish Sundays off. But the overall point is, business first, and able working bodies second.

4. Transportation: Having adequate transportation is important. You can have a job, but if you’re relying on a vehicle to get to work, it requires maintenance. I still hear workers borrowing gas money. It’s not the cost of the fuel, it’s the employees money issues. It can’t be the per hour salary, because the employee knew the pay at the hiring process. So what is it? Well it could be; #1. What kind of gas guzzling vehicle is the person driving? 2. How far does the person live? 3. Not having a gasoline budget or setting money aside for transportation issues. The list can continue if you don’t modify. Simply cut out some of the factors, example: carpool or move closer to the workplace. However carpooling means you’re relying on someone to be on time when picking you up, or leaving work at the same-time, so no ones waiting on the other. I found a retail business can careless how you get ot work, as long as you show up for your scheduled shift time. Some workplaces don’t consider your hobbies, gas, car, religious beliefs, you’re issues, or personal problems, as long as you show up to your job.

5. Manage Yourself: Truth: Most work places may not care or have time to manage your personal issues unless, it’s the workplace to care for clients businesses and issues. Most workplaces want you at work to work. However I found that co-workers in corporations wonder why you have no problems. It’s because you must manage you’re issues, so your company can manage you.

6. Stale: When you’ve worked at a place so long, sometimes you become one of the fixtures. The person knows all the gossip of every person and the different changes within the company. To me that person has become boring. I can have worked for a company the same amount of years as the other and still seem new, and revived, why? Because you need to be free from being stale or a fixture. Co-workers who continue to talk about things in front of their noses will never see the long-term goals. So their vision to me is boring. It seems like they’re bored. Even the company pacify them. But the real issue is that you’ve been working there for twenty years and nothings changed about you. You haven’t moved up, nor contributed to the company, you’ve just been there like a wart on a frog, and leaping around to nowhere. How boring! Employees like that are usually full of, “what the company should do, or this, or that” but changes never happen within that twenty year employee, I find them boring. Any co-worker can complain, but one whose been there for twenty years or more, move up, out, or shut up from complaining and boring the new hires. The unsatisfied, been working for the company twenty year co-worker is like ice cubes in your supposed to be hot soup.

Staying fit and healthy should be number one on everyone's list for the present and the future.

What do you call a person that wants to stay fit and healthy? Some people have been called exercise nuts that just muscles and have no brains. Other people especially women love the look when their men are muscle bound.

When are enough muscles enough? Enough muscles are a personal choice and the only one that can make that choice is the person doing the exercise. Getting out in the fresh air is a good thing for all ages and moving parts of the body that hasn’t been moved for quite a while is something everyone should do.

I especially love to watch men play basketball or baseball, those men are fit and they don’t have the padding on that women can’t see the man’s body. The outfits are shorts and shirt which shows off the legs of the man. Runners, such as sprinters are another sport that I love to watch in person or on the television.

I love to read articles that aren’t boring about summer and spring sports that urge people to get off the couch and out doing things. Mark Pallai of Vancouver is one of those men that urge people to get out there and improve their skills. He says that practice makes perfect usually and I am more of sit in the shadow type of person. I can’t help, but admire those athletics out there giving it their all and that is Mark Pallai of Vancouver is talking about.

Winter’s days were short. Clouds covered the sky.

The cold wind went through me when I went out.

The season’s gloomy days gave me the blues.

The sun never appeared. It was waiting

for warmer days to run the clouds away.

Winter kept me indoors for many days.

The cold season became too long for me.

I truly was becoming mad by March.

Spring was coming to my rescue in time.

The warmer days appeared more times than not.

Clocks had been changed. The sun was shining more.

As it rises each morning, the birds sing.

Flowers, grass and trees shows their colors.

Theirs and rain’s aromas is a perfume

which the wind disperses. I missed these things.

I also missed a friend which has returned.

which is Green diamonds with a shade of Brown.

I’ve longed to hear the words “Play ball” again.

Baseball has always been a part of me

as if it has been in my DNA.

I fell in love with baseball long ago

which I drew a picture about in school.

That drawing now hangs on my wall at home,

reminding me how long I’ve loved the game.

The Cubs, Mets, As and every other team

is full of hope as the season begins.

It matters not what some people predicts.

They have been wrong too many times before.

All teams have hope which is how it should be.

That is what makes them want to try again

and make their dream come true which we all have.

May dreams come true for all of us someday.

Random thoughts on sports business ethics....

News Article: Ralph Barbieri fired as radio announcer at station KNBR in San Francisco, 4/10/2012…. link to article:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2012/04/11/SP8G1O1SLU.DTL

I first heard Ralph Barbieri’s voice around 1984, when he first joined KNBR and the SF Bay Area sports scene. I have to say, right off the bat, his voice grates on my ear like fingernails across a chalkboard; there is a reason he has always been known as “Razor Voice Ralph”. It has always stood as an obstacle for me to listen to him for very long, as my nerve endings just start to vibrate along with his voice after a few minutes.

However, that being said, I also must add that I have always admired his work, in spite of his delivery. From the start of his career, he asked the tough questions, and never settled for a fluff answer from anyone, big star or not. If he believed in something, he was a passionate crusader for that cause, as indicated by his campaign to keep the Giants in SF when the team was considering a move to Florida. His involvement was a big part of the success of that campaign, during which he was tireless, making his love of sports, and particularly the Giants, plain for all to see. He always prepared and researched thoroughly, and was expert in almost any sport’s details. Though his voice and rough-hewn personality were difficult to ignore, he nonetheless remains a stalwart and professional example of a competent, and popular, sports reporter, for that is what he really is.

He was fired in a manner with which I can empathize very closely. It took my employer about 15 minutes to accomplish what his company did with him in 7, but the net results were identical, right down to the blocked voice mail. I did manage to rate an escort off-grounds by hospital police rather than management, so I guess that is one small difference. Otherwise, me an Ralph, we’re twins on this….. so, I know somewhat of what he feels right now. Given that knowledge I must commend his reasoned public response; I’m afraid that, given his media exposure quotient, I would have been a lot more forceful in my response to such chicanery, and would no doubt have caused my lawyer no end of wincing and wringing of hands at my inflammatory public ranting.

But, the saddest part of the whole affair that I found was in the comments section, printed below the article on SFGATE, wherein readers have the opportunity to sound off on the news articles on the site. One has to register to comment, but it’s free, so they have a pretty huge online community that comments on EVERYTHING.

I spent a little time after my initial comment, which rather paralleled what I wrote just above, reading over some of the other comments, and I was shocked, to say the least, by the number of responses that were not merely sympathetic to the company that did the firing, but actually expressed outright glee at what had been perpetrated on Ralph by a company where he proved his value over 28 years. In only three pages I went to to gather some numbers, the responses that were viciously petty toward Ralph, or merely resigned at the company’s behavior, were approximately 65-75% of the total number I saw….. it was absolutely astounding how many calloused, uncaring ignoramuses had spoken up to display their complete lack of humanity.

“Nadie tiene mas imaginacion que la realidad.” — Miguel de Unamuno, “El Espejo de la Muerte”, 1941

It isn’t often I’m prompted, or stimulated, to write very close to 800 words on a what is essentially a sports story. I’m a fan, yes, but it isn’t a big time-consumer in my life, just an occasional trip into vicarious thrills and fond memories of bygone days. But the sheer number of petty, self-absorbed, even downright vicious responses to the article was a surprise to me. Yes, me, the complete cynic when it comes to human stupidity and bigotry. Even I had no idea that the state of public morality had fallen into so deep a pit as is indicated in the responses to this issue, one of no particular cosmic, or even national significance.

I am now going to excuse myself, and go finish drawing up my plans for what I’m going to do when civilization comes to a crashing halt…. I have a sinking feeling I don’t have as much time to get ready as I had previously believed…. so, I’d best get to it…. I suggest you think seriously about following my lead on this. We may not have a lot of time left….. if this is any indication, very little at all…..

This should not happen, since there are usually plenty of water and electrolyte-rich liquids available at the event.

Sports are fun to watch and to perform, as long as you restrain your undesirable. To be effective at any activity, you need to create the habits that will lead to effective. A part of this is preventing certain undesirable.

Taking care of our body should be essential to anyone who wants to perform actions seriously. Using tobacco and consuming are undesirable that do not mix well with actions. Using tobacco reduces individual’s respiration features. It makes the individual gasp for air after a short exercise run.

Drinking alcohol is another bad addiction for sportsmen. It dehydrates our body and decreases control. However, consuming other liquids is necessary. Some actions gamers have the undesirable of not keeping themselves moisturized. This should not happen, since there are usually plenty of water and electrolyte-rich liquids available at the event.

Sports gamers are often created in their undesirable of not getting enough sleep. They are ended up after methods or activity titles and do not feel like going to bed beginning. They get up to begin their training on a beginning routine. If they force themselves too hard, they will find that these undesirable will end up getting them out of the overall activity.

A patient should never begin to perform without some sort of extending or warm-up workouts. Yet, undesirable often overcome. Individuals begin doing their activity without the least thought to getting ready. This is important even for an established patient. It often happens, though, that a beginner patient will be more reckless about. They do not create it their business to do everything right.

Sometimes those who perform actions sometimes think they can be sportsmen without much exercise. They have the bad addiction of doing nothing for weeks or months on end. Then, they leap in and do intense actions. They believe that they do not need to keep used and in shape. This can result in damage and tiredness.

Not using proper protection devices is a bad addiction in actions. In expert actions, this device is required. If an NFL baseball player were to create it onto the area without his safety equipment, he would be penalized intensely.

In beginner activity titles, folks are not so cautious about using protection devices. They may perform tennis in smooth sports sneakers instead of tennis sneakers. This may cause them and damage if they fall. A bicyclist may have the bad addiction of not using a headgear if she is a beginner. This can be a risky error.

One bad addiction many people have in actions is not being group gamers. If an individual tries to take all the wonder, the group comes to begrudge him and will not back him up the way they should. If the individual works with the group, the group will be a natural unit that can achieve excellent achievements.

Sports can be fun actions or an excellent way to earn an income. Either way, the way you perform yourself will create all the difference in how you enjoy the overall activity. So, fit up and depart your undesirable on the common.

Manila, Philippines - Aside from being both Filipinos, Bro. Eliseo “Eli” Soriano and Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao, have one more prominent thing in common, they’re both phenomenal and experts in their chosen fields. However, Manny Paquiao seemed to have gotten interested or had a sudden turn-around by trying to plunge into the field of expertise of Bro. Eli, the Bible.

Manny Pacquiao Bro. Eli Soriano

Recently, Manny is always visible in all forms of media as a new man in view of his alleged mastery of the Bible.

The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) thru Bishop Virgilio David cited Manny to be the perfect Bible Ambassador for making a positive impact to the Catholic Church.

The General Santos City recognizes Manny Pacquiao as a hero. The GenSan reports said, “the world-boxing champion has likewise no doubts in taking the offer as the Bible Ambassador. According to him, the Almighty gave him a message in a dream. In the dream, Pacquiao said that he found himself in a forest, where a bright light shone, believed to be God, asking the fighter why he was veering away from Him. He said, “I woke up crying. I remember I was crying in my dream and when I touched my pillow, it was wet.”

According to Jeff Schapiro, in his report dated February 12, 2012, “Manny Pacquiao, the Filipino boxer who has dominated the world rankings in multiple weight classes, may be hanging up his gloves for good after his upcoming fight with Timothy Bradley Jr., stating that is might not look good for a ‘Bible Ambassador’ like himself to beat on people in the ring.”

A Challenge For Manny

With this kind of honor, Bible Ambassador Manny may convince himself to have really known and mastered the Bible. But, how can he be sure that he is not being misled by his belief?

A question may crop up now can Manny beat Bro. Eli, the Biblical Champion, just like when he has beaten his opponents, making him a World Champion in the field of boxing? Else, Manny should better consult Bro. Eli for more advice and spiritual guidance. That is if Manny is humble enough to acknowledge his yet limited knowledge about the Bible.

There could be danger in conferring to him such honor for he might mislead the youth. Or, positively speaking, Manny’s interest in the Bible could be a commencement for knowing Christianity in the true sense of the word.

A challenge may one day confront Manny that if he could defeat Bro. Eli in a debate to be witnessed by the world, just like when he defeated his opponents in the boxing arena, then that’s the only way he could prove that he really is again a champion, beyond boxing.

Manny was now declared by his religious leaders as the Bible Ambassador for having learned to take interest in memorizing the Bible, preaching, and Bible giving. All these practices have long been and continually being done by Bro. Eli, that even the Bible Society of the Philippines has given him awards and recognition for having distributed the most number of Bibles, for free.

The Phenomenal Preacher

Bro. Eliseo (Eli) Soriano, the Presiding Minister of the Members Church of God International (MCGI) earned the moniker as “The Most Sensible Preacher.” He is a multi-awarded religious leader from the Philippines, receiving numerous awards and recognitions from different institutions worldwide. Amongst them are:

I am no avid football fan. Nor is my husband a avid horror flick fan. But yesteday I found myself yelling and cheering for his team the Giants to win. As I cheered and called the offensive teams moves wrong and the defensive teams right lol seem to get it backwards, he always smiled and helped me out.

He smiled and explained it all. During the halftime he even cooked dinner, while I watched Madonna. I realized how much fun I was having just cuddling up with him watching a game that I didnt really understand.

But that didnt matter, he watches the chiiler channel, lifetime and national geographic with me. I have come to love the history channel and hooked on CNN. Now I pass on ESPN can’t do it that much but I have learned to appreciate and gain so much knowledge sharing what he likes as he does me.

Like I pass on ESPN he passes on True TV. We all have our differences but it is a blessing to share our differences. We lie in bed sometimes talking about the days events, politics or news. Everyday we learn something new about one another.

It would be boring if we were the same. But we both love to walk on the beach and photography. He loves t play the piano and sing. I love to dance and listen to old school. But we compromise. As I read I can listen to him play and sing. I still hear music. I love to hear his voice.

It is the differences that make people special. It is the differences that people should appreciate about one another. No one should try to make someone into someone else. They should accept the differences and love them. If it isn’t hurting them they should embrace them.

The differences shouldnt drive you away, if you look at them differently you can actually learn to appreciate them. As I read my books I stop sometimes and look over at him while he plays and smile and I hear the words. Most of the time it is words he writes. Words that speak of me or us, our love our relationship. The sound is not disturbing, the sound is soothing, it relaxes me, it comforts my soul.

So embrace your differences. Be open to change. There is a whole new world out there to explore if you let yourself do it. Dont let the lil things bother you, instead smile and remember that, that is the one you love.

Even if it your child you are looking at. It makes the lil things that use to annoy you seem trivial. Now you can look at them and smile.

Now you can remember why you loved them in the first place.
