It was recently reported that Fox’s on & off again, in development superhero follow up to 2009’s “X-Men Origin’s Wolverine”, simply titled, “The Wolverine” will be shot in Sydney, Australia, even though the movie is set in Japan. Today, 20th Century Fox president Tom Rothman, also confirmed that they will film on location in Japan in the coming months ahead.

He goes on to say,”We’re doing the stage work in Australia. The main location work will be in Japan. It’s set in Japan. A great number of Japanese actors will be in it, and it’s based on the very famous run of the comic books. We’re all very excited about it. “

Tom Rothman also revealed production will begin as early as this August, although it isn’t known if they will shoot in Sydney or Japan first. The studio executive also commented on Mr. Hugh Jackman’s ongoing commitment to this big follow-up sequel.

“The script is excellent, and Hugh Jackman is 100% committed to the film and the role. He has kept himself in relentless condition between the shoots! He’s very, very determined, and feels very personally committed to the fans. I can just tell you on behalf of him, his goal is to make the ultimate, bad ass, berserker rage Wolverine.”

It’s nice to finally here some confirmation and news on this project, much less that it has been put on the fast track to start shooting soon. I don’t think I have been the only one looking forward to seeing Jackman revise his role as the the ageless anti-hero.

We have been told from many sources in the past that this will not be a sequel to the last movie, so I think many fans who were slightly taken back a few yrs ago by “X-Men Origin’s Wolverine”, will be curious to see how the movie finally shapes up in the end. So hold on to your claws kids, “The Wolverine” comes scratching it’s way into theaters July 26th, 2013 and stars Hugh Jackman. The film is directed by James Mangold.

The television series The Cape follows the usual standards of superhero stories to disappointing and tedious effect. In common with nearly all superhero stories, The Cape features a society facing various foes and threats – organized crime, vulture capitalism, ill-intentioned people with apparently supernatural powers and so forth. Alas, it appears that only a small number of outsiders, their identities hidden from public scrutiny, are able to take direct action against these threats. There is not a single suggestion that community organisation or, better still, voting for candidates with a clear manifesto for change and improvement of society is even a possibility – the only politician on show also adheres to the desire to keep secrets from his constituents and avoids any attempt to foster social solidarity or create better policies for inclusive communities.

However, The Cape goes further than this usual nonsense. There are two particular issues of which it is guilty: the fetishization of the family and misogyny.

The eponymous hero is estranged from his family (he has been framed by a malicious police officer, who turns out to be a man easily forgiven) and spends part of every episode emoting about how terrible it all is. He is quite willing to break the laws in order to protect his family at the expense of anyone else. This continued fixation with the family is symptomatic of the desire of the right to minimize the role of society and social solidarity. If the only people a person can rely on are his or her direct family members, then that individual will have much less of an incentive to stand up against injustices and indignities inflicted on other members of society (e.g. using mandatory humiliating invasive procedures on women obliged to seek an abortion, racially motivated murder of young men, state execution of blatantly innocent prisoners etc).

The misogyny of the programme is evident in the fetishization of the hero’s relationship with his son – an only child. The dreams and aspirations of the son are treated as being of paramount importance. The mother is cast as a minor character whose principal roles are to try to compensate for the lack of the father (in a revealing scene, she notably fails to read out the cartoon adventures of The Cape in the proper, manly way) and also to be a vulnerable victim (she is required to take a job, having previously lived as a supportive housewife, and her new boss makes a sexual approach with the connivance of a female co-worker). The only other woman who takes an important role is the supposedly fierce blogger/community agent known as Orwell, who turns out to be a young woman. Orwell is effective when her identity as a woman is not known: in real life, despite her physical and intellectual prowess, she very soon becomes a victim of her emotions and ends up, quite literally, paralysed with desire for not one but two unattainable men.

                                                                      SUPERHEROES IN THE STREETS!

                       Growing up in New York City, I was fascinated with Superheroes. My all time favorite was Superman. Who can remember the old 1950’s TV series with the unforgettable George Reeves? It used to amaze me how Superman could use his X-ray vision to see thru walls. How bullets wouldn’t hurt him and he would wind up saving the day. As a kid, I used to emulate him, wearing a cape around the house. The tragic thing was that this Superman character, indirectly, contributed to many a kid’s death. Not knowing truth from reality, kids would get killed thinking they could fly. Throwing themselves from tenement buildings, many jumped to their deaths. 

           A similar thing can be happening in the USA. We are having Superhero vigilantes who are fighting crime in the streets. While I applaud this noble endeavour, my concern is that these well-meaning citizens could get hurt or killed in the line of duty. Take for example, Phoenix Jones. He dresses up in a bright yellow and blue outfit. He has prevented a car-jacking and other crimes in the neighborhood, but in the midst of it all, he has had a broken nose and has been stabbed.

          What is so amazing is that his wife is, also, a crime fighter who is called by the name of Purple Reign. Crime fighting is nothing new. In fact, years ago, we had the Guardian Angels in New York City. This was a gang of teen-agers who did some good fighting crime, especially in the subways. The Guardian Angels, eventually, expanded to some local chapters in some cities. Will this Superhero trend expand as well? We are seeing some in Boston, Milwaukee and San Francisco to name a few.

                       While many welcome this change in the inner, the Police are not too pleased. Many Police officers would prefer to see them off the streets and let them take care of the problem. Truth of the matter, the public is tired of seeing the police not do anything. A call to the police can take hours and, God help you, if you live in a bad neighborhood. Who knows? Maybe the Superhero trend will be the begininng of a good change down the road. One can, only, hope so.

This amazing suit is then attuned to the wearer’s natural strength. This helps the weak to wear this technology easily. This was created as a rehabilitation tool that will bring strength and mobility to physically disabled people and the older ones. Nevertheless, availability for this suit is still limited in the market. Even the upper-body units are not that popular in the fashion market yet. “Unlike cars, HAL wasn’t developed in a one-sided fashion, but by incorporating the views of many people, including end-users,” Yoshi-yuki Sankai, Cyberdyne Chief Executive said in a statement. 

You might be excited to own one of these super-suites to become the next superhero, but you might also want to consider how much it will cost you to become a strong person. This suit is indeed amazing, but wearing one isn’t the only way to make you a superhero. Helping others in your own little way will make you a modern-day hero, too.

This was a great idea or a Cap’ America story and for the most part it works, but author, Jason Aaron spoils it in the end by having Steve Rogers saved by what he takes to be a miracle and becoming a born again Christian in the closing pages.

The opening borrows shamelessly from The Manchurian Candidate movie from the 1950’s with a group of prisoners of war being brainwashed into trying to kill a man who has been made virtually bullet proof by new batches of the secret soldier type of serum that made Captain America super-powered in the first place (though he was never bullet proof). 

The Captain himself, and a team of British SAS soldiers attack the compound and close down the operation, but the bullet proof man is killed before their eyes and his remains burnt by another apparent super-serum soldier, called Frank Simpson. He sees himself as the new and true Captain America, and even has the Stars & Stripes tattooed on his head. He attacks Captain America, injuring him badly, and escapes.

Steve Rogers recovers in Paris, to learn that Simpson was a botched attempt to make a new Super Soldier to replace him during his many years absent frozen in the arctic ice when he vanished towards the close of WW2. As the original super-soldier formula was lost, the work was complimented by cybernetics and steroid drug treatments that drove the new Captain America figure insane. Simpson had last been seen on a one-man rampage in Vietnam, before having turned up trying to sell the new secret soldier serums to the Koreans (the operation Rogers had stopped).

Rogers escapes (actually beating a woman up with her permission to help her cover for him), and goes to Cambodia to search for Simpson. There, he finds that ordinary men, women and children have been given the serum, and they beat the original Captain to a pulp. He wakes to find himself a prisoner of Simpson, who tries to brainwash him, and torture him into converting to his cause. He tells Captain America a great deal about the history America should be less proud of Vietnam, Watergate, etc, though Captain America knows of all this already from books and briefings by his allies. 

There are some good touches here. Simpson waterboards Captain America and tells him that this is what Americans do to their captives but fails to notice how he has become what he opposes, namely all that is bad in America.

Pushed to breaking point by the Apocalypse Now Captain Kurtz like Simpson, Steve Rogers is reduced to praying for a way out of the mess he is in.  The escape comes in the timely arrival in the cell of a poisonous snake, which Rogers exploits to help him over-power Simpson, beating him to a pulp before having him taken away by Shield agents as a prisoner.

Rogers argues theology with a sceptical Hawkman (one of his allies in The Avengers), before going to visit the incarcerated Simpson. The final panel shows Rogers reading the Bible to the prisoner, starting literally from the opening lines of Genesis (though the Bible is open half way through as Rogers reads this).

The conversion idea really angers me. Such heroes deserve to stay secular. Hopefully his newfound faith won’t be allowed to interfere with Rogers’s mentality in future Captain America adventures.

Aside from being able to crawl up walls and sling-shot himself through New York’s notorious traffic congestion, this guy is a real wimp!  Maybe the movies have spoiled this super hero’s copybook, but anyone who has to create so much angst over getting it on with Mary-Jane needs to be stepped on!

That and this guy still lives with his aging Aunt May.  Jeez fella!

Move out, get yourself your own place and quit mooching off aging relatives!

The Thing (Fantastic Four)

This guy would be better off dead because he simply doesn’t get that today, it’s OK for a guy to take care of his skin with lotion!

I mean, if you had the Thing’s skin disorder would you baulk at a face pack or a facial massage?

The Thing deserves to shuffle off the mortal coil for the same angst Spidey creates with his love interest, and in any event, I can’t forgive the picture created by The Thing getting romantic at anytime.  I don’t care that the love interest was a blind girl because I bet he has bad breath too!

This guy is such a putz!  Whoever heard of getting duped by Adolf Hitler?

OK, OK – the British, the French, the Belgians, the Dutch, the Russians, but for crying out loud this dude is supposed to be a superhero!

Thor is also a wiener because he let “Dad” mess up his romance with an absolute, goddess of a babe in the shape of Jane Foster.  So Thor’s dad is Odin; who cares if he’s the supreme god because, unless you’re prepared to step out from under daddy’s shadow you’ll always be a little boy.

Plus he has blond hair which explains why he opens doors with a great big hammer to open doors when he can just ring the doorbell!

Judge Dredd

Anyone who claims, “Democracy is not for the people!” should be put up against a wall and shot.

That and he called his personal, domestic robot, Walter the Wobot.  I bet he sleeps with a teddy bear and twill PJ’s too.

Not so much Judge Dredd as Judge Dudd – sentence has been passed!

Batman

There has to be something severely wrong with a guy who likes dressing up as a Flying Rat with an underage sidekick called Robin.  Robin may be a Boy Wonder but personally, I’m not wondering about Robin at all.

Again, it’s the angst that does it – this dude is mega-rich and has all the boy toys you can shake a stick at but he still has qualms over confronting his feelings for his true love interest.

Grow a back-bone, quit being such a girl and go find some self-confidence instead of hiding yourself behind a mask!
