A new Captain America tries to brainwash the original one.

GRAPHIC NOVEL REVIEW ULTIMATE CAPTAIN AMERICA 2011 MARVEL

spoiler warnings

This was a great idea or a Cap’ America story and for the most part it works, but author, Jason Aaron spoils it in the end by having Steve Rogers saved by what he takes to be a miracle and becoming a born again Christian in the closing pages.

The opening borrows shamelessly from The Manchurian Candidate movie from the 1950’s with a group of prisoners of war being brainwashed into trying to kill a man who has been made virtually bullet proof by new batches of the secret soldier type of serum that made Captain America super-powered in the first place (though he was never bullet proof).

The Captain himself, and a team of British SAS soldiers attack the compound and close down the operation, but the bullet proof man is killed before their eyes and his remains burnt by another apparent super-serum soldier, called Frank Simpson. He sees himself as the new and true Captain America, and even has the Stars & Stripes tattooed on his head. He attacks Captain America, injuring him badly, and escapes.

Steve Rogers recovers in Paris, to learn that Simpson was a botched attempt to make a new Super Soldier to replace him during his many years absent frozen in the arctic ice when he vanished towards the close of WW2. As the original super-soldier formula was lost, the work was complimented by cybernetics and steroid drug treatments that drove the new Captain America figure insane. Simpson had last been seen on a one-man rampage in Vietnam, before having turned up trying to sell the new secret soldier serums to the Koreans (the operation Rogers had stopped).

Rogers escapes (actually beating a woman up with her permission to help her cover for him), and goes to Cambodia to search for Simpson. There, he finds that ordinary men, women and children have been given the serum, and they beat the original Captain to a pulp. He wakes to find himself a prisoner of Simpson, who tries to brainwash him, and torture him into converting to his cause. He tells Captain America a great deal about the history America should be less proud of Vietnam, Watergate, etc, though Captain America knows of all this already from books and briefings by his allies.

There are some good touches here. Simpson waterboards Captain America and tells him that this is what Americans do to their captives but fails to notice how he has become what he opposes, namely all that is bad in America.

Pushed to breaking point by the Apocalypse Now Captain Kurtz like Simpson, Steve Rogers is reduced to praying for a way out of the mess he is in. The escape comes in the timely arrival in the cell of a poisonous snake, which Rogers exploits to help him over-power Simpson, beating him to a pulp before having him taken away by Shield agents as a prisoner.

Rogers argues theology with a sceptical Hawkman (one of his allies in The Avengers), before going to visit the incarcerated Simpson. The final panel shows Rogers reading the Bible to the prisoner, starting literally from the opening lines of Genesis (though the Bible is open half way through as Rogers reads this).

The conversion idea really angers me. Such heroes deserve to stay secular. Hopefully his newfound faith won’t be allowed to interfere with Rogers’s mentality in future Captain America adventures.

The artwork by Ron Garney is magnificent.

Arthur Chappell

This is a review of this popular comic book series. Please comment and like!

The Calvin and Hobbes series is by Bill Watterson. It is about a boy named Calvin who has a stuffed tiger named Hobbes. In most of the book, Hobbes is shown as an actual tiger, because in Calvin’s imagination, he is real. Calvin often daydreams and pretends he is a spaceman named Spiff, a superhero named Stupendous Man or a private detective named Tracer Bullet. There are occasional poems by the author. He often annoys his parents and his neighbour, a girl named Susie. He even creates a club named G.R.O.S.S (Get Rid Of Slimy Girls) to harass her further. Occasionally, he harasses his babysitter and his teacher. He also makes a number of imaginary gadgets such as a 3D duplicator, transformer, etc. Almost everything takes place in Calvin’s imagination. The artwork is great, the punch lines brilliant and overall, Calvin and Hobbes is stupendous. A must read series of comic books.

Comic book characters who really don't deserve to be alive.

Comic book heroes are a staple for kids of all ages from 5 to 100, especially amongst the boys but, you can’t rule out the girls in this. For generations, there have been comic book tales of super heroes ranging from Dan Dare to Judge Dredd, Superman to Spiderman and the Fantastic Four to the Silver Surfer.

But when does a Super Hero become a Super Zero? Which super heroes would be better off dead?

Spiderman

Aside from being able to crawl up walls and sling-shot himself through New York’s notorious traffic congestion, this guy is a real wimp! Maybe the movies have spoiled this super hero’s copybook, but anyone who has to create so much angst over getting it on with Mary-Jane needs to be stepped on!

That and this guy still lives with his aging Aunt May. Jeez fella!

Move out, get yourself your own place and quit mooching off aging relatives!

The Thing (Fantastic Four)

This guy would be better off dead because he simply doesn’t get that today, it’s OK for a guy to take care of his skin with lotion!

I mean, if you had the Thing’s skin disorder would you baulk at a face pack or a facial massage?

The Thing deserves to shuffle off the mortal coil for the same angst Spidey creates with his love interest, and in any event, I can’t forgive the picture created by The Thing getting romantic at anytime. I don’t care that the love interest was a blind girl because I bet he has bad breath too!

It’s Clobberin’ Time!

Thor

This guy is such a putz! Whoever heard of getting duped by Adolf Hitler?

OK, OK – the British, the French, the Belgians, the Dutch, the Russians, but for crying out loud this dude is supposed to be a superhero!

Thor is also a wiener because he let “Dad” mess up his romance with an absolute, goddess of a babe in the shape of Jane Foster. So Thor’s dad is Odin; who cares if he’s the supreme god because, unless you’re prepared to step out from under daddy’s shadow you’ll always be a little boy.

Plus he has blond hair which explains why he opens doors with a great big hammer to open doors when he can just ring the doorbell!

Judge Dredd

Anyone who claims, “Democracy is not for the people!” should be put up against a wall and shot.

That and he called his personal, domestic robot, Walter the Wobot. I bet he sleeps with a teddy bear and twill PJ’s too.

Not so much Judge Dredd as Judge Dudd – sentence has been passed!

Batman

There has to be something severely wrong with a guy who likes dressing up as a Flying Rat with an underage sidekick called Robin. Robin may be a Boy Wonder but personally, I’m not wondering about Robin at all.

Again, it’s the angst that does it – this dude is mega-rich and has all the boy toys you can shake a stick at but he still has qualms over confronting his feelings for his true love interest.

Grow a back-bone, quit being such a girl and go find some self-confidence instead of hiding yourself behind a mask!

Female Super Heroes Costumes This Halloween - five Alternatives to the Popular Wonder Woman Costume.

Female super heroes outfit this halloween – 5 choice to the common wonder woman outfit

The wonder woman outfit is definitely a halloween party preference and quite justly so. Ever since lynda carter swagger her stuff back in the seventies, while beating bad guys with hardly a hair out of place, wonder woman outfit have been very common.

However, you don’t have to go as the amazon champ if you fancy acting the superhero for the day. There are many choice female super heroes outfit valid that will allow any women to live out her fancy at the all pompous party.

*supergirl*

Supergirl, also known as kara zor-el, is superman’s cousin and a fellow kryptonian survivor. Superman’s female spouse was make in the fifties, but had to wait until 1969 for her first bring role in dare comedian. The supergirl outfit is an clear choice to spouse a superman outfit.

*batgirl*

If your spouse is going to the party as batman then the clear choice of outfit might be to go as robin, but maybe far more praising would be for you to go as batgirl. The first incarnation of the nature was the batgirl betty kane, which debuted in batman #139, in 1961. However, the batgirl outfit most of us apparently unite with the nature was the one worn by yvonne craig, in the 1960s batman television series.

*emma frost*

Since the fame of the x-men film, there has been a new fancy dress outfit that has been bring more and more common, that of emma frost. Modelly a marvel comedian nature, emma grace frost was initially known as the white queen and is famous for her showing white attire as much as her telepathic powers.

*spider-girl*

Not nearly as well known as her male spouse, spider-girl first seem in the eighties in an rotate future of marvel comedian’ shared world. As she is a comparatively new superhero, this is one of the most model of the female super heroes outfit presently valid.

*catwoman*

The best has been saved to last and although not technically a superhero in the truest sense of the word, more of a super scoundrel, the cat woman halloween outfit has got to be in the most exciting. This is one outfit that will be a joy to wear at the imminenting party.

Tells what it is like in Liberia for the real life superhero Lion Heart.

Being a Superhero is super hard. It is rewarding but it can be dangerous and thankless. Its not a life most people will lead. I am Lion Heart a real life superhero in Liberia Africa and this is my story about what a day in the life is like for me as a real life superhero in Liberia.

I have to take off work every week to take a long, dangerous, and expensive bus ride to the local villages. Liberia had been facing its second Civil War less then a decade ago and there are still many problems and safety concerns especially out in the interior of the country where I go to help the villagers. There are many risks associated with going out to the Interior. Besides possibly being stopped by bandits there are many health concerns too. Once I contracted malaria and had to be hospitalized when I returned. I almost died and it is something that is going to affect my health the rest of my life but I keep going. I have to, seeing what I see every week I can not stop going back to help.

Because of the risks I try to go with others when I can. Anyone who comes with me has to pay their bus fare just like I do. In a country with the second highest unemployment in the world paying for a bus trip to help others is a luxury.

When I go to the villages I sometimes find it difficult at first to talk with people. Because of the wars people are not trusting. I hear many stories from the people I help of supposed missionaries who tricked the people into giving their children away to human traffickers. I have even heard of people who work for NGOs that have done the same because people trusted them since they worked for these organizations. I would guess half the villages I see have had problems with the slave trade. The other half that has not experienced it I tell about it and how to avoid it. Because of my work fighting the slave trade I have put my life at risk. The human traffickers are very bad people who do not like people hurting their business.

When I go out to the villages I often bring small gifts which I have to buy and bring with me. Candy is a popular and cheap gift for me to bring. After I have gained the villagers trust I begin to teach them many different things. I teach what the people need most. If they have no clean water I teach about boiling water. If they are farmers I teach them how to make their own fertilizer or other helpful farming techniques to improve production. I even try to learn about problems I do not know about and then find solutions later.

One problem I saw was diarrhea. I found many kids dying from it and eventually learned it is the second largest cause of death of kids under 5 and one of the top 10 causes of death in the world. I found the solution for it and have since taught others and even been able to save some kids lives by using it while visiting the villages.

While doing this work is hard and dangerous it is also very rewarding. People are very grateful for the help I give them. Many people have volunteered to help. People often tell me I have given them hope.

What has been hard though is knowing that what I teach can be used by people around the world. It is frustrating knowing if just some of the things I teach were told to the world millions of lives could be saved. It would only take one celebrity to come to the cause and the whole world would learn quickly about the solutions to these problems that face most of the world. I have tried to get attention to the work so others may benefit by it. Even in Liberia I have been unsuccessful, after talking with a large local paper they made it clear I would need to pay them to get the story printed. Unfortunately that is how things are here.

While the dangers I face from disease and bad people may be real physical dangers the pain I fill thinking of those that die every day and could have been saved if they just had been given some simple information is terrible.

I wish that I could reach everyone in the world and let everyone know what I teach. I think if people saw the things I see every day like the tears of a mother as she talks of her dead children, or looked into the eyes of the husband who lost his young bride they would understand the importance of this work and fill the way I do. Though it seems this may never happen I take solace in the work I do every day and the knowledge that I am making a difference to everyone I do teach.

This article was not written by Lion Heart but based off what he does and conversations with him. He has read the article beforehand and while he fills a little uncomfortable sharing some things such as his near death from Malaria he thinks that this conveys what he does and how he fills better then he can in writing and he approved the publication of it. For more information about Lion Heart and his work you can go to his website found here.

Tells about how Lion Heart the real life Liberian superhero is teaming with the NGO Generosity Water to build wells in Liberia.

Lion Heart the real life African Superhero is a one man NGO. So it is not surprising that he is now working with a real NGO Generosity Water. One of the main things that Lion Heart teaches villagers when he visits villages is about water. Water borne ailments are one of the top causes of death in the world and simply by teaching people to boil the water before using it millions of lives could be saved each year from these diseases.

Not only does Generosity Water eliminate the problem of people having unclean water it also saves the people time going to fetch water. Often children have to spend all day going to get water from far away for their family. These children then do not get to go to school. A well in their village means that kids will have safe clean water and have time to go to school. Each well can provide clean safe drinking water for 300 people and will last decades. In that time an entire generation will be able to grow up with safe clean drinking water and the ability to get an education.

When Lion Heart first started out as a superhero he had no idea that there were others. Now he is working with other real life superheros to help Generosity Water.Lion Heart has appreciated the help and support of other real life superheros. The job of a superhero can be lonely.
You too can help out like Lion Heart and his super friends by going to the link and making a donation. The money goes to Generosity Water not Lion Heart. When enough money has been raised Lion Heart will help them locate a village for a well and help them build it. For more information on Lion Heart, Generosity Water, other real life superheros, and this project you can follow this link.

A short piece about real life costume vigilantes.

What comes to mind when someone mentions the word “superhero”? Do your thoughts

automatically resort to comics and movies? If so, then it would probably shock

most of you to know that right now, here in the U.S., there are 300 registered

real life “superheroes”. I know, sounds like something right off of the silver

screen right? Well thanks to comics, and more recently, movies, the popularity

of putting on a costume and fighting crime has entered the realm of everyday life.

I wouldn’t call these people Superheroes, exactly, seeing as how in order to be an

actual superhero, you have to possess super human abilities. Masked Vigilantes is

a more appropriate term, and that is exactly what these people are. The premise

of this will remind you of a certain comic/movie, Kick Ass, in which a teenage boy

grows tired of being bullied, and watching others being pushed around, so he decides

to take matters into his own hands by putting on a costume and going out into

the streets to fight crime. But, as the movie shows, it is not as easy as it might

sound. You can not simply put on a costume and call yourself a hero. Without the

proper amount of training and practice, you could end up causing more damage

than good. The lead character of Kick Ass found that out the hard way, when he did,

in fact, get his Ass Kicked. In real life, there more than likely will not be a Hit

Girl around to save you. Take Batman, for example, as a young man he seen the chaos

and despair caused by criminals first hand the day his parents were killed right in front of his

very eyes, and he vowed to take revenge on his parents’ killer, and every other

criminal in his city. Like any other masked vigilante, Batman owned no super human

abilities, so he spent his life training and gaining the proper skills needed to be

better than the authorities who make a living going after criminals everyday. But,

just like anyone else who chooses to become a costumed crime fighter, taking a

beating in the beginning is inevitable. The point is, unless you have access to the

proper resources, and unless you are willing to devote your life to “the cause”, then

don’t bother putting on that costume.

I personally think that this cultural revolution of costumed vigilantes is an

excellent idea, as long as these undercover crime fighters know what they are in

for. Criminals are ruthless, especially if you are not wearing a badge. I am rather

interested in seeing how this all unfolds, and I will be on the lookout for the first

costumed villain. Because, after all, you can’t have heroes without villains, right?

Furthermore, I hope that the idea of these real life “superheroes” will inspire

Are superheroes' really protecting Seattle? Can vigilantes be the answer to lowering crime in our big cities?

A group of real life superheroes’ really have been hitting the streets of Seattle at night trying to protect innocent people like you and I from crime and violence. They call themselves the “Rain City Super Hero Movement” and yes they do wear masks and costumes. This is supposed to be a national movement in the making so don’t be surprised if a caped crusader shows up somewhere in your hometown very soon.

What is local law enforcement saying about all of this? Well for starters they haven’t broken any laws, but they are lucky that none of them has been hurt yet…well seriously. There have been reports that one or more of the heroes have received knife wounds in tussles with thugs. One crusader was nearly shot by police when he ran out of a dark park at night. He was dressed all in black and wearing a mask so go figure.

These guys do seem pretty strange for doing the things they do but according to the police they have actually helped some people. Law officers seem to be warming up to the masked crusaders and some actually stop and talk to them at night when they see them. You know if I were getting mugged at knife or gun point and the only person willing to stop and help was wearing a funny suit and a mask…I would probably not mind one bit.

This is all very interesting to me and I will begin to do more research on this “do good movement” and get back to you soon with whatever I can find. Until then, keep your eyes open wide for there’s no telling what you might see. Have a great day!

A writer's thoughts.

Writing to many may seem to be

just holding up a pen and placing it on paper,

sprouting words from your head.

However, for those who has been to the magical realm of ink and paper, would say otherwise.

Writing is a gift.

An ability to connect with people far and wide.

Regardless race, religion and age.

To touch their souls with our own.

Here’s a little something I put together for fancy~

I believe I have a power.

I’m not a secret superhero.

But I reckon this is awesomely wicked too.

I have the ability to bend ink into words.

Words that flow with emotions,

the language of the hearts.

I speak better with my pen.

I know I could do wonders with my words.

I could persuade, convince and tap into people’s minds.

My words have a way to sink into your head.

With a remarkable fluency which no language could match.

Perhaps its because I’m not just writing to you,

but reaching straight for your heart.
