After reading the book Carrie by Stephen King I had to write a reflection paper based on the historical significance of the time. I got a 100% on it. :) enjoy! Maybe read the book!

Stephen King: the ‘king’ of horror fiction. He is the master of the gore, the wicked, and the otherworldly. Most readers have heard his name, but have never dared to read his works. Those who have been ambitious enough to look into his stories may be surprised to what they’ll find. Not every book King has written is about senseless violence and bloodshed; each story has its own meaning and it’s amazing how deep their significances will go. A fine example of a book with great implications is Stephen King’s Carrie. Even though this novel is entirely fictional, it goes deeply into both historical and social issues during America in the 1970’s.

Carrie White, a quiet seventeen-year-old girl is a social outcast because of her strange behavior, shy reputation, and her physical appearance (skin, weight, hair, etc.) She is constantly being bullied by her peers and has been bullied ever since she had entered the Chamberlain school system in Maine. Carrie has nowhere to be accepted, not even at home with her mother, Margaret White, also referred to as Momma. Carrie’s bizarre behavior at school gets her bullied, and her religious-crazy mother beats her and locks her in closets to pray for hours, and tells Carrie that she should be ashamed of every aspect of her womanhood, including menstruation. This is where we get introduced to Carrie herself. Young Carrie White starts her period one day during P.E. , completely horrified and under the impression that she is bleeding to death. Her fellow classmates throw sanitary napkins at her yelling comments like “Plug it up!” and “PER-iod” at poor Carrie, making the situation that much worse. Carrie is sent home early to recover from her traumatic experience. When Momma finds out about her daughter’s period, Carrie is scolded and forced to pray to God in ‘the closet’ for the sin her body has committed.

In the end, Sue Snell (one of Carrie’s classmates who pitied her), had set Carrie up to go to prom with her boyfriend, Tommy Ross, so Carrie would be able to have a fun night and not have to deal with her lack of a high social status. Even this wasn’t enough, for prom night was a malicious and bloody disaster, leaving hundreds of people dead and a once small but lively town left in ruins. No one would ever quite recover. While Carrie is a completely fictional novel, its theme shouldn’t be ignored. Carrie’s plot is wild, unrealistic, and scarily horrifying, and those who read the book can get a lot out of it. There is both a historical and social significance behind this horror fiction, and it’s not hard to tell what they are.

Bullying is a huge issue in schools around the world and it still happens today. Emotional and physical cruelty towards another person is never right and should be acted on at all costs before it’s too late; that’s what Stephen King was trying to portray in Carrie. Carrie White was just another teenage girl living in a small town; she wasn’t that much different aside from her horrific home life and her telekinetic powers she had been born with (Carrie). She craved the acceptance of her peers, but was denied every time. Throughout Carrie, especially in the beginning, this denial is very prominent. “In fact, King often portrays Carrie in an animalistic fashion to accentuate the horror of the students’ bullying of one so vulnerable (Mahoney 230).” This is very true and there are many examples of this cruelty all throughout the novel. A lot of times, when Carrie is asked a question, she will respond with a grunt of “Ohuh?” as a response, and she even makes animal-like noises like braying and gobbling; that definitely got King’s point across. These brutal attacks on young Carrie continue both in the story and within the book’s tone, but it’s obvious that she isn’t just some sickening, corpulent girl. She has aspects of normality in her life; it’s simply distorted by her horrendous home life. “…She could fix her hair. Buy Pantyhose and blue and green tights. Make little skirts and dresses from Butterick and Simplicity patterns. She could be, could be, could be—Alive (King 42).” Carrie knows that she has the potential to be like other girls her age, but knowing that her mother is so religiously insane, she had no hopes of normalcy. It just couldn’t happen. And that’s what’s really sad about the whole aspect of bullying really; it’s judgment. They didn’t know much about her life or how she lived, and she was socially exiled and abused because of their assumptions. It isn’t right, and it will never be right. The mental impact the bullying had on Carrie got to the extent of death (for her and others), and this also applies in real life. “As King leads us toward the apocalyptic climax, he begins to warn about the dangers of intolerance. He seems to suggest an imminent judgment day for those who victimize outsiders and misfits (Mahoney 230).” Some people are pushed to extremes when they feel like they are useless and have nowhere to go. In Carrie, there is indeed a judgment day, and a killer one at that. But the cruelty of the bullying in Carrie had an underlying layer to it due to a major movement during the 1970’s.

1970’s America: The Vietnam war was winding down and coming to an end, Americans are petitioning for peace, and technology is on the rise again. The 1970’s was a time of major change for the United States, and it’s one of these major changes that ties into the theme of Carrie. The women’s rights movement of 1970 is the historical significance in Carrie, and though it isn’t as prominent as the bullying theme, it has a large part in how the book was written and what each of the characters went though. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 made it so employers could no longer deny people jobs based on an individual’s religion, gender, or ethnicity. Seven years after that, the Supreme Court agreed that treating people unequally because of sex violated the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution (Moss and Wilson 51). Women now had won a few legal battles and had the morale to continue the fight for equal rights, trying to break the social and legal barricade so they would be seen as something more than an object and house care-taker. During the early 1970’s, the Equal Rights Amendment was being argued on whether to be passed or not. The women fought to get this law passed by doing protests, organizing feminist theater groups, and even making day-cares so mothers would be able to work and get out of the house. Also, when abortion was made legal in 1973, it gave women the power to do what they wanted with their own body (Moss and Wilson 51). These activists were fighting with all they had to lose their label that history had cursed them with: being an object. In Carrie, King weaves characteristics of the women’s rights movement throughout the novel. One of the features of the women’s rights movement was how women nationwide wanted to break away from the object label that they’ve carried with them for centuries, and sometimes it’s still battled even today.

Carrie had to grow up knowing that she would never be a beautiful and the media had portrayed other women, much like the earlier example of her comparing the models in Seventeen Magazine to her own appearance. Also, one of the characters of the novel, Chris Hargensen, was in a relationship where her boyfriend, Billy Nolan, was very rude to her and was only with her for her sexual purposes. Another example is how Sue Snell , the girl that took pity on Carrie and made prom possible for her, was with Tommy Ross, her boyfriend, and though he was a decent guy, she felt like she was obligated to have sex with him because of her battles with women’s complicated expectations in society. “There were dark things lumbering around their warm circle of light. The idea that she had let him F*ck her (do you have to say it that way yes this time i do) simply because he was Popular, for instance” (King 47). Social structure and how women fit into that status was seen as life or death to the women of this time, and even today. The women’s rights movement definitely impacted the Carrie’s theme and what the readers thought while reading the book.

Some critics claim that Carrie is a dated work, but really, it’s only dated in terms of the supernatural (Mahoney 231). There is a lot of meaning and history behind the horror-filled words Stephen King has scrawled across the pages of his very first published book. And to think, if his wife (Tabitha) had never taken the story out of the garbage can, that we would have never been exposed to King’s raw, powerful writing. Sure, Carrie is a fictional work, but his themes apply to society today just as well as it did back in the 1970’s. Bullying and equality towards women have been a problem for some time now, and issues with these things still occur. But those who read Carrie can learn something from the book that started the career of the world’s most famous horror writer. Bullying someone is always wrong, and lives can be in danger in the most extreme cases. In Carrie, hundreds of people died as well as Carrie, and though this is a bit unrealistic, bullying can lead to death if someone feels the need to take the life of someone else or themselves (Much like the Columbine school shooting on April 20th, 1999. The only difference being that Columbine was a true horror story.). The women’s rights movement has also changed how America works and made it so women are no longer discriminated for being a woman. This aspect in Carrie is more subtle but still makes itself clear from time to time. Carrie felt bad about herself because of the expectations she was expected to uphold to be an ideal American teenage girl; Sue felt like she had to have sex to maintain her social status, and Chris Hargensen (the girl who started it all) was used for her body and seen as nothing but an object. It may be difficult to imagine that these things could have happened some day, well, to some extent at least, but it probably did (aside from the supernatural and bloody content). Carrie’s hardships seem to hit the reader hard though, and that’s what keeps the reader engaged. “Carrie’s struggle strikes a painful chord in each reader; indeed, [Stephen] King seems to ask, don’t we all feel a part of Carrie, the misfit, the outsider (Mahoney 230)?”

What Do You Want To See.

Warning! Please stop reading now if you’ve haven’t seen the complete third season of this show.

Season three of the hit series was like marmite, people either loved it or hated it. My feeling about the show went up and down during the course of the season but for me at least I think it ended on a high note.

Although I’m glad Klaus isn’t dead I’m not happy about him being in Tyler’s body. I’m so excited about Elena becoming a vampire, its been a long time coming. Now Nina will have to play two vampire which should make for interesting scenes.

I also asked other people what they wanted to see from the show.

“ Elena and Damon finally having hot passionate sex.”

“ Damon and elena finally giving in and getting together permanently.”

Although I also want Elena and Damon to be together somehow I don’t think it would fit with her character. I prefer Katherine and Damon together, now thats hot!

I’m hoping the vampire diaries goes back to in roots and gets as amazing as it was in season one and early season two. I just wish we didn’t have to wait so long for every new season to begin. I never know what I’m going to do with myself until them.

Sam and Dean must locate three key items to defeat Dick Roman and the Leviathans, and Castiel aids them in their request. Meanwhile, Bobby attempts a new ghost trick that turns out to be extremely dangerous.

Sam and Dean Winchester are on a mission to track down the necessary blood to create a weapon that can do away with the Leviathan. Hence, the return of a couple of welcome faces fromthe Supernatural universe. Plus, Bobby’s vengeful tendencies are increasing in strength. How do you think he handles things whenthe Winchesters try to bench him? Let’s just say not well.

It’s the second to last episode so it’s all about dealing with the Leviathan and their quest to turnthe human population into breakfast, lunch and dinner. Dick Roman has acquired a company called Sucrocorp (remember the fake commercial from “The Girl with the Dungeons and Dragons Tattoo?”). This allows him to takehis plan to a more global level. The Leviathan have moved beyond dosing humans turducken-style in restaurants and are targeting everywhere food is sold. They are turning humans into walking slacker zombies by lacing the high fructose corn syrup with their own special recipe, which, ultimately, will make it easier to serve humans up as barbecue or whatever style of cuisine they choose.

Meanwhile, Bobby appears to Dean in the bathroom of all places. He’s not looking good. His anger is triggered way too easily. I don’t like seeing Bobby this way at all. It’s about as painful for me to see him like this as it is for Dean and Sam. I don’t really want to see Ghost Bobby go all vengeful on us. I just don’t. I want to remember him as Sam and Dean’s faithful father figure. However, he does manage to helpthe brothers out with the intel on the blood that is needed for the Leviathan-killing weapon:

Bobby: “The only way to kill the Leviathan is with a bone washed in the three bloods of the Fallen. It’s got to be from a human as light and good as the Leviathan are hungry and dark.”

Dean: “Yeah, good luck with that.”

Bobby: “The rest is doable. And doable now. You’ve already got the fallen angel blood. Next up is the blood from the ruler of fallen humanity. Now, the best I can tell, that’s Crowley. Numero tres is the Father of fallen beasts.”

Dean: “Which means?”

Bobby: “You got to bleed an Alpha.”

Dean: “But they’re all dead.”

I do find it odd that Ghost Bobby had to help Sam and Dean figure out they need Crowley’s blood as well as the blood of an Alpha. You think they’d be able to figure that part out themselves. I guessit gives Bobby a purpose as he slowly descends into vengeful mode. What the Winchesters really need help on is deciphering the “human as light and good as the Leviathan are hungry and dark” part. I guess that’ll happen in the finale. Until then, Sam and Dean have some work to do:

-They summon Crowley, who tells them he’ll be more than glad to donate his blood to the cause. Just not yet. He doesn’t want his blood out there for an unprotected amount of time. He’ll give his blood last. He also gives them a way to locate an Alpha. In this case, it’s the Alpha Vamp, who isn’t as dead as Sam and Dean had thought. The return of the Alpha Vampire means anotherRick Worthy appearance. Yay!

-Sam and Dean find the Alpha’s lair but he isn’t there. They do find a young woman who has been one of the Alpha Vamp’s”special girls” since she was eight. It’s all very creepy and disturbing. She eventually leads the brothersto the vampire.

-Apparently whenever vamps feed on the dosed-up humans they get affected and it’s easier to get rid of them as well. The Leviathan basically want to be the only game in town. So it’s notonly humans in danger of being eliminated. It’s just about everyone and everything.

-The Winchesters bench Bobby but he finds a way out anyway (he possesses a woman’s body) and he disappears. He’s probably after Dick Roman.

-Sam and Dean try to warn the Alpha Vamp about Dick and the Leviathan. He doesn’t think there’s a problem. He thinks Dick will leave him alone.

-When Roman’s henchman — Edgar — shows up, the Alpha has Sam and Dean locked up so he can confront his frenemy. They even bring up Eve — the Mother of All. Haven’t heard her name since last season.

-Sam uses his considerably awesome lock-picking skills to getthem out of their room and back into the action. They end up beheading Edgar.

-In return for disposing of this particularly evil Leviathan, the Alpha Vamp gives them his blood. Sam and Dean save a little boy aswell. He was one of the Alphas special kids.

-Dick Roman traps Crowley just when the Winchesters need him.

“There will be Blood” is a strangely low-key hour of television, with bursts of emotion here or there, mainly when Bobbygets vengeful. I would have preferred if more had happened now instead of saving it all up fornext week. Having said that, I think it’s still one of Supernatural ’s better penultimate episodes. Next stop: the Season 7 finale.

Random Thoughts

-Poor Kevin Tran, the prophet wewere introduced to in “Reading is Fundamental.” Dick threatens to kill his mom unless he translates the Word of God.

-You know how everything we’ve ever known and loved about Supernatural (the Impala, the rock aliases, Bobby and Cas) has taken a back seat for much of this season? There’s one more thing that was targeted in”There will be Blood.” Junk food. Dean’s existed on the stuff since the beginning of the series. And now, because the Leviathan are tainting the corn syrup found in food, Dean can’t have his pie. Theonly thing that’s safe to eat is natural food like fruit (the horror!). Sam’s cool with it I’m sure. He’s used to eating healthy. But, if this had to happen, can they please just give us the Impala back? It’s almost the finale!I can’t believe we’ve gone an entire season without Dean’s baby. That’s just cruel. (And, yes, I know I’m a broken record when it comes to the Impala.)

-Does Crowley not know Cas is back?

-Dean’s new leather jacket? I approve. I absolutely approve. Wow.

-I say this every episode he’s in, but I’m just full on enjoying JamesPatrick Stuart’s portrayal of Dick Roman.

-Love the dosed-up cop listening to “Why Can’t We Be Friends” and using his siren to play along.

-I think my favorite line of the entire episode is the Alpha Vamp’s “See you next season.” Classic.

Possession is a phenomenon when a person is outside the control of his own mind. Some people assume possession is caused by supernatural powers that came into my soul.

Conniption symptoms often occur when a person is in the wrong place and time. Usually a person who possessed the mind is empty, the condition of his body was tired and less strong faith.

This situation can easily be exploited by a supernatural force that usually can not be controlled by those who possessed it. In general, people who have the obsession with the strange behavior traits as below:

– A sharp gaze, straight ahead is empty.
– His voice turned flat without intonation.
– Able to answer questions that smells paranormal.
– Physical strength exceeds the actual power.
– And to a certain extent, people are possessed by spirits are able to do something unusual like a fly, throw people around it with one hand movement, and so forth.
– They usually issue a froth (foam) with eyes bulging out of her mouth until you see the whites only

How to prevent it possessed?

The most appropriate way to prevent it;
A. Do not let yourself be empty (daydreaming)
2. Avoid places that can be said to be haunted.
3. Do not have a habit of talking or yelling at random. See the place and time when you are talking or yelling (loud laugh).
4. Do not challenge nature (such as mountains, oceans, forests, etc.) or spirits. Do not boast.
5. Bring yourself to God always.

A young man is shown the gruesome side of this Earth. The monsters of our realm are all make believe to some, but then there are others…The one’s who can see. These are the one’s who defend. They keep us from paranormal harm’s way as much as they can. This is the story of one young man’s journey into the concealed mysteries of our own planet.

Come, Follow me, he says. What the heck is going on? I can’t understand a single thing that’s just happened and now I’m left having to make a decision on whether or not I follow this man or stay in my house. I want answers, but I don’t want something horrific to happen.

“Will you stop thinking to yourself and just hurry up? We have a lot of discussion that needs to be tended to.”

The man had a aged face; wrinkles fell from the sides of his nose to the corners of his lips, and then onward down his face, the lower lines being covered by a thick but well-kept goatee. His suit was nearly glowing white, and he had a small emblem of a turtle pinned to it. I supposed if anything I could at least follow him for a day, and come back home if I didn’t like what was happening.

“Okay, but where are we going?” I rightfully questioned.

He walked over to my closet door and opened it up. The inside was glowing so intensely white that I couldn’t see the other side of it.

“You first.” He said smiling.

My nerves were on edge, my heart beating through my chest. I stepped up to the door, and walked forward blindly. When I felt myself pass through the frame I reopened my eyes and what I saw I could not believe.

A giant hallway, black tiles on everything except the doors. Everything was neatly trimmed white, and at the end of the corridor seemed to be a door with a much larger room on the other side of it. As we walked I looked at the bizarre paintings of monsters even the devil wouldn’t dream of. Old Photo’s of giant sea creatures and relics such as a tooth of a dragon were displayed by every door in the hall. Each door had a number and a letter on it, much like hotel rooms.

We got to the end of the door and on the other side was a small city. I turned and looked at the building we exited; it was a hotel, named the Stran Gersp Lace Inn. The building seemed to match that of a typical earthly rural city, except the inhabitants were much stranger.

People with horns tearing through their foreheads walked around eating ice cream. Teenage Vampires walked in groups and hung out at movie stores. Ghosts and ghouls sat at shops designed specifically to materialize ghostly edibles. This place was like a backwards Earth, and it was truly incredible.

“The people here are all the monsters there.” The man said.

“That’s interesting. You know, I haven’t gotten your name yet.” I hinted politely.

“Oh, forgive me.” He stopped and put his hand out towards me. “I am Professor Jordan Limpnod. I run the recruiting services for the Supernatural Underground Nation. I make sure that people like you come to see other people like me.”

“And what exactly are we like?” I joked.

He looked at me with deep black eyes, and he said in a very serious tone,

“We’re the protectors. We make sure that everyone in the real world doesn’t have to deal with all of our troubles. On this side of the world, there’s a lot more to worry about than politics and media. We’ve come together to live, and fight, as a whole.”

It began to sink in how serious my situation was. According to this guy, I’m a protector. Not only a protector, but a protector of Earth? As I followed behind him my mind juggled every thought that entered my head around.

“Well, here we are.” The professor said.

I looked up and saw a gigantic sign, reading S.U.N.U.V. – “Teaching and Protecting“. The building was by far the biggest I had seen so far, seeming to stretch hundreds of feet in the air.

“What’s in here?” I asked as we walked in.

“We’re headed to get you some gear for training.”

“Training!? Training!? Already? What am I suppose to do? What can I do?” I began to panic.

“Relax,” he said, putting his hand on my shoulder. “Remember that hellish thing you encountered earlier? Do you remember escaping it? You teleported, William. That was your first time ever using supernatural abilities.”

“Teleported! How is that even possible?”

“Question your teacher, not me. Here, follow me.”

We turned a corridor and ended up in a hallway just like we walked into from my closet. He turned to a room and began shuffling for something in his pocket. The door read 8968, under it the professors name was engraved and painted red. Before I could step in the professor jumped back and nearly knocked me over.

“What is it, sir!?” I questioned.

I looked over to the right and saw Professor Limpnod laying on the ground, his head down and hat over his brow. I heard rumbling and stomping from inside the room. I slowly peeked around the corner and saw such a hellish creature that not even the holiest of saints would bless it.

Random,Weird and Downright bizarre. Check this out for yourself. Do leave a comment.

I am not saying this is true or anything but I just thought this was kinda interesting/weird/scary all at the same time. I just recieved this in an email the other day and thought I’d share.

>1) New York City has 11 letters
>
>2) Afghanistan has 11 letters.
>
>3) Ramsin Yuseb (The terrorist who threatened to destroy the Twin
>Towers in 1993) has 11 letters.
>
>4) George W Bush has 11 letters.
>
>This could be a mere coincidence, but this gets more interesting:
>
>1) New York is the 11th state.
>
>2) The first plane crashing against the Twin Towers was flight
>number
>11.
>
>3) Flight 11 was carrying 92 passengers. 9 + 2 = 11
>
>4) Flight 77 which also hit Twin Towers, was carrying 65 passengers.
>6+5 = 11
>
>5) The tragedy was on September 11, or 9/11 as it is now known. 9 +
>1+ 1 = 11
>
>6) The date is equal to the US emergency services telephone number
>911. 9 + 1 + 1 = 11.
>
>Sheer coincidence..?! Read on and make up your own mind:
>
>1) The total number of victims inside all the hi-jacked planes was
>254. 2 + 5 + 4 = 11.
>
>2) September 11 is day number 254 of the calendar year. Again 2 + 5
>+ 4
>= 11.
>
>3) The Madrid bombing took place on 3/11/2004. 3 + 1 + 1 + 2 + 4 =
>11.
>
>4) The tragedy of Madrid happened 911 days after the Twin Towers
>incident.
>
>Now this is where things get totally eerie:
>
>The most recognized symbol for the US, after the Stars & Stripes, is
>the Eagle. The following verse is taken from the Quran, the Islamic
>holy book:
>
>”For it is written that a son of Arabia would awaken a fearsome
>Eagle.
>The wrath of the Eagle would be felt throughout the lands of Allah
>and lo,
>while some of the people trembled in despair still more rejoiced:
>for
>the wrath of the Eagle cleansed the lands of Allah and there was
>peace.”
>
>That verse is number 9.11 of the Quran.
>
>Still uncovinced about all of this..?! Try this and see how you feel
>afterwards, it made my hair stand on end:
>
>Open Microsoft Word and do the following:
>
>1. Type in capitals Q33 NY. This is the flight number of the first
>plane to hit one of the Twin Towers.
>
>2. Highlight the Q33 NY.
>
>3. Change the font size to 48.
>
>4. Change the actual font to the WINGDINGS

I don’t really know what to think about this. I have since done a little research and there seems to be other of these kinds of things floating around the internet. There was even one about being that Bush was the Antichrist. Now I found that kinda interesting.. If you guys are interested in that I can post some links. Makes for some very interesting reads.

Warning Spoiler Alert!

So what can we expect?

True Blood season four offered as witches with a side a fairy. There was more werewolves and shape shifters. The Vampires were at war again only this time it was the witches that were the undead’s concern. So what will season five bring us?

At the end of the last episode it looks like someone decided it was a good idea to dig up crazy vampire Russell. I have no guesses to who it is or why they would do that but they must really need him. Eric had better watch out Russell will be out for his blood!

What will happen to Sookie and Eric now that he has his memory back? Will they rekindle their romance? Another relationship that needs to get back on track is Pam’s and Eric’s, the can’t go through next season not speaking to each other, they go together like peanut butter and Jelly after all.

And Now for the major one. Tara got her brains blown out last year but producers tell us she’ll be back, as a vampire! Now that I can’t wait to see Tara has always been one of my favorite characters, it will be interesting to see her as one of the undead.

Those are going to be the three major story lines for next season and personally I can’t wait.

A review of the new series of Being Human, summarising the previous three series and introducing the new characters featured in Series Four.

Being Human is a BBC television series in which a vampire, a werewolf and a ghost share a house. The fourth series has just started in the UK and, if you’ve never seen it before, bear with me, it really does work.

Series 1 took us through how the three main characters met and drifted into sharing a house together. We have Mitchell, a handsome 120-year old vampire, George a geeky newly-converted werewolf and Annie, a confused and unhappy ghost. The being human of the title concerns the efforts of our heroes to be normal, to be, as far as supernatural creatures can be, human. In Mitchell’s case this means restraining himself from the urge to rip people’s throats open and drink their blood and, for George, it is the need to avoid tearing apart anyone within reach every full moon.

All three series have given us some gripping drama, covering profound issues of life and death, good and evil, tolerance and prejudice and a pondering of what it is to be human. There’s comedy too; very dark, but also very funny. The humour comes from the frequent incongruity of the human and supernatural worlds existing alongside each other and from the mundane reality of house sharing. Would you tell a powerful, formerly murderous, vampire to do his own bloody washing up? The programme also benefits from having three central characters who are all pretty damn sexy!

Original cast: Mitchell (Aidan Turner), George (Russell Tovey) and Annie (Lenora Crichlow)

So far Being Humanhas taken us through the back-story of the three main characters and, in Series 1, shown us the attempts of the evil vampires to tempt Mitchell, their former poster boy, away from his new friends back to his old, bloodsucking ways. In Series 2 sees George falling in love with a girl called Lucy who, we later learn, is in thrall to the leader of a sinister sect that wants to destroy all supernatural beings. Meanwhile, Mitchell and Annie are falling in love. By Series 3 Mitchell and Annie are so deeply in love that he goes into purgatory, quite literally, to save her. George, meanwhile, falls in love with Nina, accidentally coverts her into a werewolf and then gets her pregnant . At the conclusion of the series, Mitchell persuades George to kill him, to save Mitchell from himself and the world from Mitchell. At the end of a very busy day for George, Nina is also killed, but their baby survives.

The opening episode of Series 4 was about moving on from the demise of three of the previous mainstays of the show: Mitchell, George’s girlfriend Nina and the evil, wise-cracking vampire leader, Herrick. We are also introduced to a new character, Hal; clearly a direct replacement for Mitchell. Played by Damien Moloney, Hal is an urbane, soft-spoken vampire and, we learn, is one of the legendary ‘old ones’. Back to the happy house-sharing trio, then? Not quite. George is still around for now, but actor Russell Tovey wants to leave the show so his character is being eased out. Cometh the hour, cometh the man, and into George’s shoes steps Tom (Michael Socha). Tom was previously best supporting werewolf in Series 3, (surely that should be a new Oscars category?). He is now the main (wolf) man. Watch out Hal, this doggie ain’t too fond of vampires.

Series 4 Cast: Hal (Damien Moloney), Annie (Lenora Crichlow) and Tom (Michael Socha).

Note that a brooding, wraith-like George (Russell Tovey) hovers at the margins

In the series opener, the vampires are on the warpath, literally. They have decided that enough is enough and it’s time they made war on humankind; killing most of us, converting some and enslaving the rest, presumably as blood donors. Not sure how they work out who goes into which category, but I assume the selection process will be equal opportunities compliant.

George and Nina’s new baby daughter will feature in this series too. It is broadly hinted that she will be the saviour of the world. George, after more brooding, calls her Eve. Pretty heavy on the biblical allegory there, one has to say. And is it just me, or is there some political comment in there too? Why else is the leader of the evil vampires, Herrick’s replacement, called Griffin?

I can’t wait to get my teeth into the rest of the series. Watch it!

Being Human plays on BBC 3 television on Sundays at 9.00 pm
