By Joan Whetzel

Superstitions and Old Wives’Tales have been around since time immemorial. Superstitions are seen as beliefs with no logical or sound foundation and Old Wives’Tales, once based in truth, are now considered merely unproven, time-honored beliefs. Read on to find out if some of your beliefs might actually fall under the categories of Superstitions or Old Wives’ Tales. Following a description of each is a list of some of the more popular Superstitions and Old Wives’ Tales.

What Are Superstitions?

Some of the superstitions we hold are just for fun (e.g. an itchy palm means you’ll have luck or you have money coming your way) while others can be so deep-seated that they affect the way a person lives his or her life. For example, the superstition that if a person doesn’t get out of the bed on the same side he or she got in on, they will suffer bad luck, could lead to a compulsive need to always get into and out of bed on the same side. Why tempt fate?

Superstition can be defined as a belief in supernatural or mystical causes for certain events or occurrences. In other words, certain things happen (good luck or bad luck) because of some uncanny, unexplainable, magical intervention, events or occurrences that could be described as nothing short of miraculous because there was no other way of explaining them. During the “Age of Enlightenment in the 1700s, Christian doctrine scorned belief in miracles, reducing them to superstitions and equating belief in miracles with belief in magic, which was considered sinful. In fact the Catechism of the Catholic Church deems superstition to sinful because it demonstrates a lack of faith in Divine Providence, which breaks the First Commandment.

While some superstitions may be suggest or represent religious practices (Voodoo for instance), most apply to views and customs about good or bad luck, the prophesying on the prospects of things that will happen based on previous events that are totally unconnected, and to spiritual beings.

What Are Old Wives Tales?

In the olden days, way before modern technology and modern medicine evolved into what it is today, women were the keepers of medical wisdom which was passed on from generation to generation. Women – especially the Old Wives who were the town’s mothers, grandmothers, midwives and healers – were responsible for delivering babies, healing sick family members and neighbors, were considered experts in nutrition, experts in children, folk medicine, herbs and even death.

Many of the Old Wives’ Tales developed from the wealth of their experience. Some of the Old Wives’ Tales, though were based in superstition, such as the Tale that eating bread crusts would make your hair curly. Many Old Wives’Tales developed from folk cures for every day ailments (toothaches, colds), or were aimed at teaching about things like deathand natural life changes (explaining pregnancy to kids, beginning of menstruation, or menopause), or to teach children about which behaviors to avoid by associating those behaviors with dire consequences (if you touch a toad you’ll get warts).

Whole books could be written about the Old Wives’ Tales concerning pregnancy (e.g. if you carry the baby high it’s a girl, but if you carry it low it’s a boy). There are way too many pregnancy related Old Wives’ Tales to go into here, but some of the other aspects of life still offer up some really intriguing examples. When reading through this list, you may discover that many of these Old Wives’ Tales sound suspiciously like superstitions.

Are we going to believe these myths?

There are many superstitions that filipinos still believe at present. What attracted me are beliefs during the wake of a dead person. During the wake there are certain actions that we can’t do, foods that we can’t eat, etc.. We can’t sweep our house, all we can do is to wipe away the dirt. We can’t take a bath in the house where the dead is being laid however, we can take our bath in another place. We can’t wash our clothes but it can be done in another house.

For the foods, we can’t eat foods that came from plants that crawl. We can’t roast foods. We can’t transport food and things from the place of the wake to another house. Once food and other things are brought to the house of the dead, these things must remain there until the dead is buried. And there are still others which I can’t anymore remember as of this time.

We just can’t say that these are true but it’s only God who knows everything and it’s only Him whom we shall believe.

Here are 20 of the most famous Filipino superstitions that are rarely heard or practiced today.

It’s crazy, some people may call it. I have my fair share of considering that superstitions don’t make sense because they have no scientific evidence. I guess it is crazier to simply ignore them. Those beliefs came out for some reasons. Some things in life are complicated enough for our mind to easily accept and understand. A lot of people claim to have experienced or observed them. True or not, it is something worth our respect. Here are 20 of the most famous Filipino superstitions that are rarely heard or practiced today:

1. Eating chicken on New Year’s Day or during birthdays is discouraged. It will make you poor and live like a chicken the whole year. I don’t think it is true but I used to avoid eating chicken on my birthdays for the same reason. Instead I would eat noodles for a longer life.

2. Whatever you do on the New Year’s Day will determine what you will do the entire year.

3. It is not good to take pictures in 3s or 13s; otherwise the one at the center will die.

4. Sweeping the floor at night brings bad luck.

5. Whistling in the evening is considered a curse for someone to die. Sometimes it is considered a call for the bad spirits.

6. Breaking a mirror means bad luck.

7. The visitor should not stand at the door of a house with pregnant woman inside.

8. Sleeping after taking a bath will result blindness. Oh I have done this many times.

9. A menstruating woman is not allowed to take a bath or else she will become crazy.

10. After circumcision, a boy should not step on a mortar or pestle or go near tomatoes. His wounds will get worse.

11. Circumcision should be done during low tide. Doing it during high tide will increase the flow of blood.

12. Extracted teeth should be placed in between strong foundation. It will make the teeth strong, too.

12. Sore eyes can be cured by washing with the first urine early in the morning.

13. Parents who make fun of those who have physical disabilities will have children with similar disabilities.

14. Parents who eat conjoined fruits will bear conjoined twins.

15. Brides are not allowed to try their wedding dress before the wedding day or the wedding will not push through.

16. A lingering black butterfly is a sign of death of a relative.

17. Having a dream of falling teeth means death of a family member.

18. A person with mole on his foot is considered a wanderer. Those with mole on the hands are considered creative.

19. Those with big ears will have long life.

20. Taking a bath at night with cause anemia.

Cruel hold of superstitious belief in caste system makes many people in India roll on the plantain leaves, containing leftover meals eaten by people of higher caste. This ritual, called “Made Snana”, is believed to cure skin diseases. Intellectuals in the country ask if it can cure skin diseases, what is the need for hospitals.

It is sad that even in this twenty-first century, the cruel caste system is oppressing people in India. Caste system has deep roots in every field of life. Caste plays a vital part also in health. Some people in India believe that caste was instituted by God. They think that birth in a particular caste and certain diseases are the consequences of “Karma” in the previous birth. They also believe that serving the higher caste people, particularly people of Brahmin caste, can free the low caste people from the sufferings of diseases. Their belief has led to many superstitions and rituals which are practised in India.

“Made Snana”, which literally means “bathing on leftovers,” is one of those blind superstitions. It is a kind of bathing by rolling on the leftovers on plantain leaves, left by the Brahmins. It is believed that this rolling on leftovers can heal many skin diseases. This is said to be a tribal ritual 1,500-year old, still alive among the people in Karnataka State, in South India. Recently this ritual has become the subject of fierce debate, demanding ban or continuation.

“Bathing on leftovers” is believed to cure skin diseases

“Bathing on leftovers” is an annual ritual performed at Champa Shasti festival, held in December at the Kukke Subramanya temple in Karnataka. This temple exists on a hill at a distance of 110 kilometers away from Mangalore. The festival is conducted by people of a tribe called Malekudiyas. Champa Shasti festival is celebrated for three days. Most important ritual of the festival is serving meals to Shivalli Brahmins in the temple premises. The caste of the Brahmins is supposed to be the highest caste. They are supposed to be given preference in the society. They would be served dinner during the temple festival. The Brahmins are expected to eat and leave some food as leftover on the plantain leaves, on which they are served meals. When the Brahmins leave the dining hall, the low caste people would enter and roll on the leftovers on the plantain leaves.

Rolling on the leftover on the plantain leaves is believed to cure skin-related diseases. People believe that this ritual fulfills the “wish” of the deity who grants cure.

Why do people want to continue this ritual?

Devotees say that the ritual gives them strength. VS Acharya, the state higher education minister of Karnataka, is a strong supporter of this traditional ritual. He says that the ritual can produce antibodies and help improve health. (Unfortunately this minister passed awy recently.)
Indian people believe that most of the skin diseases are caused by some reptile poison which is generally called “Nagadosha.” It is interesting to note that, after the ritual, many people get relief from their skin afflictions. People who got cured include some popular stars of the country.

Voice against the ritual of “Made Snana”

Recent years have seen the call for banning this controversial practice. Intellectuals demand to ban the ritual, saying that it is inhuman. Few weeks ago, heads of some Hindu religious institutions across Karnataka state condemned this ritual. They ask if this ritual can cure diseases of skin or skin cancer.

Although the government of Karnataka State had banned this ritual, it had to revoke the ban recently due to the pressure from devotees. Caste is a cruel system in India. Public awareness has to be created among the public about the ritual. Then only selfish people will not dare to exploit the downtrodden.

erdosed partially or wholly.in my memories from childhood i can count on fingers the number of moments where i have seen peoples belief on such superstitions, i remember how a small crossover of a cat on road made people worried and horrify them too.

i have seen how people halt their important journey only because of the “dimnished light” which is lit recently. one reason must have been the fear of losing valuables, (like a small gold earring).these spicious sings and symbols made the nerves thrives of the invinduals who believe them blindly.

Their are occassion when i have heard asupicious omen to like Dream of running: a sign of a big change in your life. If you catch a falling leaf on the first day of autumn you will not catch a cold all winter.

With so many thoughts pooped into my mind. some times i think. Do superstitions decimate a person intellect and attitude?then answering myself thats……….

it is illitracy and that can decimate a persons intellect and attitude….no everybody has some type of simple superstitions .main thing is that they should not be overpwering the person to much to the extent that he and his attitude. If such education is overwhelmed by superstitions, the person concerned has not earned the advantages of education. Thus superstitions affecting the intellect.

Read this article and find out whether this superstition is valid or not.

New Year’s Superstitions about Round Shape Fruits

Filipino sub-urban superstition tells us that, during New Year, fruits of different kinds and smells are necessary to display on the tables on the New Year’s Day. The concept is really to believe that Filipino people would do this for abundance and prosperity for the next year and onwards. It is said that preparing these fruits on the 31st of December may bring a myriad of luck for the coming years. Also, it is said that round shape fruits must be displayed because they symbolize money or simply the coin plates of currency. It is funny to think then that people rely on the superstitions in which they never understand other things except the luck given out and informed with that superstition. Indeed, it is only a superstition and it is out of the truth.

Though this superstition is quite comical, there is nothing to worry about it. It may be good or better and bad or worse. The preparation of round shape fruits has nothing to do with our luck or success. The concept maybe of preparing fruits during New Year’s Day is simply a Thanksgiving to God to the whole year round. It shows that the blessings are presented through the food displays and through inviting people and friends to come for the New Year’s Day.

Finally, I would like to remind that round shape fruits have nothing to do with anything else in luck and in success. The luck and success can be achieved through hard labor and diligence towards work plus prayer to the Almighty Father who is the Source of life and the Giver of everything. In contrast, I did not say I go against with this superstition because there is no wrong with it. What I say is this. If you display everything just like those – round shape fruits, you need to work and improve also your jobs with prayer to God. That is the key, and not on the round shapes of the fruits found in the fruit stands.

This is a horrible account of a degrading ritual followed by backward class devotees at Kukke Subrahmanya temple run by state government.

India is a land that was inhabited by kings, emperors, sages, saints, seers, rishis, and monks in the past. It is also the land where great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Swami Vivekananda were born, strove for the welfare of the neglected strata of society, and enlightened them on the need to bring about social reforms in daily life. While Mahatma Gandhi led a movement to allow members of the dalit community into the temples, Swami Vivekananda fought against blind superstitions with a view to bringing about dynamic spirituality in place of rigid religious practices prevailing at the time. He laid emphasis on man-making and nation-building activities as well as on practising the twin principle of service and sacrifice to uplift humanity. Another great stalwart to appear on the horizon was Dr B.R.Ambedkar who spearheaded a movement to secure freedom from exploitation of various kinds, to the dalit (oppressed) masses that were steeped in poverty, ignorance, superstitions, and were discriminated against by the upper strata of society.

Now the question is: how far India has progressed in terms of the changed mindset brought about by the above leaders? Today we have an enlightened society that welcomes foreign direct investment (FDI), modern technology in science and medicine, western outfits, music, pizzas, and internet connectivity. In other words, we live in a globalised world where caste, race, religion, and gender are no longer the hot topics of discussion in our daily life. In this scenario, let us take note of what happened at Kukke Subrahmanya on 28th, 29th and 30th of November 2011.

Kukke Subrahmanya Temple: Karnataka.

Image via http://s3.amazonaws.com/readers/2010/06/17/dsc01570_1.jpg

Kukke Subrahmanya temple at Subrahmanya is one of the famous temples of Karnataka, being run by the state government. The temple is visited by devotees from all parts of India including presidents, prime ministers, chief ministers, cricketers, actors, and business tycoons. Unfortunately, no eminent persons had ever visited the temple during the annual festival called Champa Shasthi held in November/December every year, who could have been witness to a strange ritual called ‘Made Snana’ undertaken by a large number of devotees (around 6,000 this year). If they were witness to this event, perhaps they would have felt deep anguish, agony, disgust or mere shock at the nasty ritual undertaken here with the support of local swamiji and the Minister of Endowment.

Now let me tell you what this ‘made snana’ ritual is all about. ‘Made snana’ ritual has been in practice at the temple for about 400 years or more. People (mostly being dalits and backward classes) who take a vow on their own to get rid of their skin ailments go to the temple during the Champa Shashti fair (also called jathre in Kannada) and roll over the left-overs of food (lunch) served to Brahmins (who claim to belong to the superior caste) on banana leaves, around the precincts of the temple (see the picture elsewhere and also the links to videos on YouTube).

Made snana in progress at Kukke Subrahmanya temple.

Image via http://s3.amazonaws.com/readers/2011/12/10/kukke20subramanya201_1.jpg

Video on made snana: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8U6QmeSnYLY

This is one of the most demeaning, humiliating, shocking and shameful religious practices undertaken in India, especially in Karnataka, year after year. It may be noted here that last year (2010) there was a hue and cry about this obnoxious and degrading ritual as a result of which the local authorities had issued a notification in the local newspapers banning Made Snana, citing objections to the inhuman practice from the public earlier. However, when the festivities began, a few people belonging to a particular community insisted that the ritual should continue this year as well, and the local authorities permitted the ritual to go on due to the intervention of the Minister of Endowment. As a result, the ritual went on for three days to the dismay of the general public who had opposed this practice tooth-and-nail last year. What is distressing to note is that the Minister concerned was himself a practising doctor earlier whose medical practice prohibits him to prescribe made snana to his patients for skin-ailments, which is against the medical ethics.

What shocked the nation most was the argument put forth by the local swamiji who declared that made snana was an age-old practice undertaken by devotees on their own and that the practice should continue. (Wasn’t he aware that the Master-Saint Swami Vivekananda had advocated a scientific outlook and dynamic spirituality to the masses over a century ago?) It is strange that even when dharma and religious practices have undergone numerous changes in all parts of India over the years, this swamiji still advocated the obnoxious practice citing the sanctity of individual beliefs.

Worst of all, the incident that took place on the 30th of November 2011 served as a climax to the ritual of made snana. A group of activists from Mysore who had visited Kukke Subrahmanya to study the ritual of made snana and convince the devotees practising the ritual, not to undertake such demeaning rituals in this modern age, was assaulted temple staff in the presence of police who were mute spectators. It is pertinent to note here that the leader of the group, Mr K S Shivaram, who is the State President of Karnataka Rajyada Hindulida Vargagala Jagrutha Vedike – Karnataka State Backward Classes Awareness Forum- ((KRHVJV) had taken permission from the local authorities previously to visit the temple and also to collect details of made snana from the devotees concerned. In spite of it, the local police did not provide the required security to the group.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sx8TAYac4M4

Fact-finding team on made snana being attacked outside the Kukke Subrahmanya temple.

Kukke Subrahmanya temple, as mentioned earlier, is run by the Muzrai department of the Government of Karnataka and there are many kinds of sevas (kinds of pujas) available to the devotees for a certain fee. It may be noted that these sevas take care of all the needs of the devotees including relief from their skin-related problems, fertility-related problems of couples and the like. When this is the case, devotees should have been educated by the temple authorities not to undertake made snana as the same benefits of made snana are said to accrue to the devotees by performing these sevas. Moreover, the moot question is why the Brahmins alone should be served food exclusively in the precincts of the temple, which means giving them exclusive rights over other backward communities, thereby violating the principle of equality guaranteed under the Constitution. In India, Constitution is supreme and discrimination on the basis of caste, race, or colour is prohibited. Needless to say that if backward classes could get rid of their ailments by rolling over the left-overs of food served on plantain leaves to Brahmins, the opposite of it, i.e. Brahmins rolling over the left-overs of food served to the backward class people should also give them the same benefits. However, the Brahmins, on their part, are not inclined to undertake such a ritual.

Time will only tell when India would come out of the shackles of blind beliefs and exploitation of ignorant and vulnerable sections of society in the name of religion.

In various cultures there is a huge mass of various omens and superstitions. Some of them have ancient roots and their foundations laid down in folklore. Others have appeared recently. Many of the latter-day take and superstitions associated with modern technology, the Internet and computers. Naturally, the question naturally arises – where do folk omens and superstitions.

Well, let’s try to understand this question.
How are superstitious?

Superstitions do not arise for a reason. Many generations have passed it from hand to hand. They retold by our grandmothers. Then we see firsthand that they work, begin to transfer them to your children and grandchildren. Believe me, it can not be superstition, which do not justify its essence. Most people would just laugh and forget about the existence of some sort of beliefs. But this does not happen. We stubbornly continue to keep this folk wisdom.

So how are all the same superstition? First, a person notices the strangeness is that under certain circumstances, always inevitably happens is an event. He once confronted with this, the second one. The third time he begins to see a pattern. Attempts to avoid this set of circumstances. He then shared with their loved ones suspected by these facts. They begin to turn in their own lives and to search for data matches. Find and conclude that there are actually some obscure relationship.

Further spreading superstition human mass. And for centuries they always justify their existence by the fact that people who believe and have taken certain steps, are protected from the negative impact of energy fields in your life.

At its core, superstition – is nothing more than close observation of the order of things in nature and human life. Scientists have proved the existence of biological energy field of the Earth and the individual. Each of our action has a negative or positively charged. Accordingly, we can not help every one of its thought or deed are making oscillatory movements in the overall aura. So do other sentient beings, including flowers, grass and trees. So, if you wilt or front of the flowers, lush bloom color, it means only one thing. Do you have a home energy changes. Grasp the relationship with that dog howling and a person near death is possible only under constant close observation of wildlife. We have not reached that level of development, which would be able to see with the naked eye changes in energy fields around us. It is possible that the dog as an animal predator by nature, is quite capable of catching these negative destructive changes. You can even suggest that in the past that allowed her more successful hunt those animals that were close to lethal limits. The same can be said of the distant relatives of dogs – wolves. They howl only when hungry and looking for prey. Their howl is likely to notify the school of that, near the place where they are located, will soon be a dead man among the animals. This will allow them to get more easy prey. That’s worth thinking about why we believe in superstition. Maybe they can help us navigate in space, which we do not see?
As there are signs?

Signs are significantly different from superstition. It is rather a reference book of folk wisdom. There are hidden secret knowledge of how a change of the seasons, which portends a particular natural phenomenon, which leads to change in a particular plan.

The root of the origin and will take approximately the same superstitions. Both there and here are the basis of centuries of observation. No one specifically focuses on research, does not explain the mechanism of action people take. But most of us are confident that the signs of coming true.

More proof of this is the past winter and a subsequent summer. In winter 2009 – 2010, on the whole territory of the European part of the country were severe frosts. Old-timers say that it will be very hot summer. And so it happened.

Why the signs are almost always true? And by the way, this is a scientific signs from an astronomical point of view, the explanation. All the matter in Earth orbit. If the winter she went a little farther from the sun, it is natural

That observed in the cold and frost. But this inevitably leads to the fact that in passing to the opposite point of the orbit in the summer, the planet will be closer to the sun is at such a distance that it was removed in the winter. Logical? Absolutely.

There is nothing supernatural in popular superstitions is not and can not be. Only experience and observation. Take for example the calendar marks. Folk wisdom says that the summer and its yield can be determined in the spring. What’s so special? Indeed, the earlier spring and united, the greater the likelihood that sow all the necessary people have time to much earlier. Extended for a period of plant vegetation, fruits and berries will be much greater. Take a huge amount due to the birds. These creatures are still not fully understood by scientists. We do not know the mechanism that makes the birds fly south in the spring and return to their homes. It would seem, well, flew away, so there would have remained. What causes them to break away from the places where sufficient food and favorable climatic conditions? What mysterious force moves them every year in space. Why are they behind the centuries-old evolution has not managed to adapt to the conditions of the climate zone in which they derive their young.

All these questions have no answers for scientists. But people say the signs of the behavior of birds very much. For example, if a dove flew into the window sign says that the house is bad luck. And most importantly, all the signs in different people say about about the same. Discrepancies of various events are very rare. In most cases they are related to differences in cultural traditions.
Modern signs and superstitions

Today, with the development of technological progress folk omens and superstitions continue to occur. People are still watching the current events and display the slender theory. And all this is very quickly gaining a certain power and starts to really work. Do you know the secret of the rapid spread of modern superstitions and adopt? In the advanced technologies of communication networks.

It is in our time we can share and exchange information almost instantaneously. We have a unique opportunity to pass it over vast distances. All this makes it very quick to inform many people. Each of which contributes its share of power in the new omen and superstition. So it becomes energetically powerful enough and can actively intervene in the life of any person.
