Cellphones have changed the way we interact with people and allow us to stay connected anywhere and anytime. Is it always a good thing or does it make people selfish?

Gone are the days when we had to be home to hear from family and friends. Long car trips with the family meant we were disconnected from others besides our family and grocery shopping could be done without a phone call from a friend while browsing the aisles.

Have you ever been visiting with a friend and been interrupted by a cell phone call? Or had to shush a cell phone user at a social function? A new study by Robert H. Smith a researcher at the University of Maryland has found that technology like cell and iphones can make people selfish.

According to the study people are less likely to exhibit prosocial behaviour in a way that benefits others once they have a cellphone in their hands. People distracted by phones were found to volunteer for community service less, or participate in activities that would benefit charity.

The study also found that cellphone use brings to mind our basic human need to feel like we belong, evoking feelings of connectivity to others. The phone essentially replaces a person’s need to participate in good works and connect with others.

While cellphone use mimics a feeling of connectivity to others it can actually pull us apart and make us selfish to the needs of others around us. By putting our cellphones on hold once in awhile we can begin to reconnect with people and events around us.

Confused about what to do in college? How to figure out the right degree or the right combination of degrees to take in college? This article might help start the thinking process.

As we graduate from high-school, we are preparing ourselves to meet the challenges of the world. Some of us are ambitious to go into science and technology, while others have ambitions of running their own business. So, how do we determine which is the right degree for us?

Our brain is made up of two sides: Right Brain and Left Brain. The Right side is random, intuitive, holistic, synthesizing and subjective. The Left side is logical, sequential, rational, analytical and objective. Both sides of the brain are important to us. Using both sides of the brain yields optimum output as we are making informed decisions and observations of the world around us.

Therefore, the right university degree/s should involve both sides of the brain. For example, if you are taking Bachelor of Business Administration, then take a minor in Mathematics or Statistics; or take a master’s degree in Statistics. Similarly, if you are doing Bachelor of Engineering, take minors in Management or Communication. You get the picture. The reason for this amalgamation of different subjects is because the curriculum within these disciplines requires the application of both sides of the brain.

Now the argument could be that each degree on its own includes a certain level of logical and intuitive cognitive processing. Thus, another smaller degree in another discipline is not required. However, the cognitive balance provided by one degree is tipped in favor of one side of the brain; soft sciences towards the Right side and Science degrees to the Left side. While this may be convenient, it may pose challenges in the future. For example, as important it is to make logical derivations of a problem, right communication strategies could help in effective and efficient delivery of an idea or theory. The core idea is to make use of both sides of the brain when looking at things and obtaining a degree/s that does this is a crucial characteristic of the right university degree.

Another argument could be that courses under the soft sciences can be learned by practice. Why should I go to the university and take Communication or Management, for instance, as part of my major? True story. It could absolutely be learned by handling tricky situations and socializing. But a degree from a university speeds up this process and helps you to socialize effectively and reduces the amount of bad eggs you encounter.

I hope this alleviates the problem a little. Sure, the ultimate combination of degrees depends entirely on your interests and passion. But, it is ideal and beneficial if you chose a combination that made you think logically and intuitively. You will be an asset to any institution you decide to work for. Good luck in your endeavors.

The adopters of these interaction methods connect intensely on the everyday living and enhancement of the used method, as it must continue to include things like the developments of other methods and constantly be modified.

Since these lately implemented technology-based methods experience incredible good results, especially among young person categories, their ownership requires possibilities and risks similar to types. Modern technological innovation evangelists support the expansion of technological innovation, along with the comprehensive using these new types of technological innovation, essentially by the whole community, to be able to fulfill the individuals pursuit for interconnectivity and belongingness. On the other hand, competitors of this view recommend that these technical improvements are just another type of “imprisonment” and that will further reduce pleasurable, reduce immediate face-to-face contact, and will make individuals “islands.”

Evaluating the effects of modifying interaction varieties and the progression of additional programs over the modern times, along with how these improvements have changed your comprehension about ourselves, has been the subject of research in a wide range of research. History is full of numerous illustrations of fight and incorporation through which a more innovative functionality was created. Thus, the issue continues to be not to stop the pondering and the judgments so as to avoid the unpleasant “battle location,” but rather to use this judgments successfully and analyze the new technical evolutions under the opportunity that they actually represent the new resources to assess the future effects of present-day individuals praxis.

Nebraska – unmanned aircraft or drones, not just the monopolyThe government’s or military. Human rights activists (HAM), environmental, and journalists, are now beginning to adopt drone appears, to uncover violations.

As proclaimed Voice of America onFriday (3/2/2012), a site called Future Journalism Project highlight the adoption of these drones. This site also reveals an experimental laboratory at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln are investigating the possibility to conduct drone journalism, that is to fly a camera with a global positioning device to the news moments for video recording.

Andrew Stobo Sniderman, co-founder of the Genocide Intervention Network has recently published an article entitled Drones for Human Rights, in The New York Times, believes the drone can be used to take a lot of information fromthe conflict areas, such as Syria or the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo .

“We can imagine some situations where this tool can be used to retrieve detailed information about something that happened, for example, when the government killed a large number of its own citizens,” said Sniderman.

“Technology can be used for good or bad. And we all suggest that human rights groups shouldseriously consider using this newtechnology to help document a violation. Human rights groups have always done this. Question is whether we can use the drones to do this is even better,”he said.

Sniderman said the video footage of air containing the human rights violations are taken by unmanned aircraft, andnot obtainable by other means, can make the response more effectively with the situation occurs.

Both students and educators should be careful when participating in online classes.

While online classes can make the learning experience much more convienient and expedient, there are a few things that should be considered in order to make them truly worthwhile, and not a headache.

1. Technology should be airtight: As we all know, computers sometimes don’t work the way they should. Generally, if you invest in cheap technology, you will get more erroneous technology. Educators should consider this when deciding what programs they will use to administer education, or who they hire to build their websites. Someone’s grade may depend on whether the software or web page is running up to speed.

2. Instructors should know how to use the technology: Even if the technology provided is airtight, an online course’s instructor needs to know it inside and out. First of all, if a student does have a problem with an aspect of the technology, the instructor should be able to help. Second, if the instructor cannot correctly implement the technology, it is more likely that mistakes will be made, or students won’t be able to find what they need.

3. Students must be up to the task of being self-taught: It’s not just the instructors that need to go the extra mile when it comes to online classes. Such classes require a good amount of self-discipline, something that many students do not have. Students must be willing to read the assignments and manage their time well, something that is much easier in a structured classroom setting.

4. Student-Instructor communication must be upheld: It is much harder to ask someone questions and communicate when you do not see them on a regular basis. Thus, an instructor of an online course must keep the channels of communication wide open at all times. Also, the students must be proactive about this communication and willing to ask questions. Much of this ties into the teacher knowing the technology, as well as the students having self-discipline.

This is not to say that online courses are an outright bad idea. If implemented correctly, they can accellerate learning for able and motivated students. The problem occurs when the educators involved to not take great care to maintain a level of communication on par with the classroom setting, and that they are also proficient, as well as provided, with airtight technology.

Technology has made it possible to do things 50 years ago we never would have dreamed of.

Technology
Destroys Our World

We
are dependent upon technology in today’s world to make our lives easier. Advances
in technology have made it possible to communicate and socialize with people
all around the world. In retrospect, many people are angered at the fact of
losing Internet connection for a few minutes, while in places like Africa the
majority of the population hasn’t even been introduced to the idea of an
Internet. We have become dependent on technology to aid in our everyday lives. Technology
has had both positive and negative results on our society through its power,
voice, and adaptation because it has changed how we communicate, socialize, and
interact with the world around us.

Technology
has influenced the rise in power for today’s youth with the use of social communication.
The invention of the Internet has revolutionized the way people live. Either
through communicating via Face Book on the web or using face time on the new Ipad,
the use of technology is power. In a study on the usage of cell phones it is
said that, “More than half of teens (54%) are daily texters” (FCC). Because so
many teens can communicate through a cell phone, being social has now become
much easier. Through the influence of texting, many teens are becoming subject
to Multimedia advertising. In these advertisements there is a lot of power to
influence teens and young adults to buy certain items, and in that sense you can
become a promoter of ads you see. Multimedia influences teens today much more
than it does to adults (Mrs. Lewsadder being an exception). Instead of kids
playing outside, they are interacting through the use of electronics. Play
dates in elementary school now consist of two children playing games separately
on I-phones. It seems strange to watch my brother try to play with a friend
when he is involved with Angry Birds. If this powerful tool continues to
advance, I wonder if we will become a closer generation or one that is
fragmented into separate interests depending on the dominant technology of the
time. Technology is key today and will play powerful role in the future.

.

Another
important aspect in the rise of technology and communication is adaptation.
These days it is harder for older people to adapt to a communication advanced
society. In many cases, life has changed from life on the homefront in a war to
having an unrealistic economies for the older generations. In the first couple
years of your life you learn how to learn. But becoming as easily adaptive
isn’t as simple as it once was and you gradually lose your ability to keep up. For
example, whenever my grandma wanted to write a research paper she had to look
up her topic on the cards, read books, and take notes. She was required to have
knowledge of how a library worked and the reference materials she needed. This
goes to show that maybe the last generation is more literate and we are becoming
less educationally skilled in some areas. She has a difficult time even turning
on a computer. Today computers help facilitate research and aid writing
instantly. Having to adapt to technology has become even harder for older
people because the technology is advancing so quickly. With that, this is a
variation of Darwinism, where only the best and the able can survive in a
future society. Power is a huge aspect in the world of communication and can
influence the old timers, even though they have to adapt.

The
physical result of advancements in technology is that people do not exercise as
much and are becoming less social. Partly due to the new sensation of Wii
sports men and women alike don’t go out as much. This is a good promoter for a
dating website like E-Harmony. And because you can play these games in your own
home people become restricted and human interaction with each other is at an
all time low. Also, my mom can watch TV while exercising on the treadmill.
Neither of these requires interaction with others. While playing traditional
sports, you communicate, make connections, and gain friends. I have to build a
partnership with my teammates on my soccer team. I will always compete to the
best of my ability if I know that my team needs me. (I doubt my mom competes
with her treadmill.) This can only be accomplished if I am physically present
at games and practices. Technology, while supporting the need for physical
exercise, does not build the relationships between individuals and breaks down
the need for sportsmanship and human association.

The
new multimedia sensation is to own an electronic device to socialize with
people instantly. This advancement has inspired the concept of a single world
culture. In Egypt and Syria protestors are using social communication, such as Face
Book or Twitter to spread their ideas of the opposition. This is important
because now the government cannot limit the ability of its citizens to provide Intel
and show what’s really going on in their country. We have also grown impatient
with communication that is not spread quickly. In India, it would take months
to send mail and communicate with people. Today, people are angered when it
takes more than a few minutes to send a text message. Society is demanding
communication be sent and delivered at the moment of occurrence. There are
still some areas that are hard to reach through geography however; with our
advanced communication we can access them.

Our
lives are much simpler thanks to the innovation of technology which has led the
way for communication. Because we are becoming more dependent on the use of
technology it might hurt us in the long run. We now have the ability to
communicate with people thousands of miles apart in the comfort of your room.
This effect has led to social isolation in our world. Yet it has unified us in
a single mass world culture. Technology will always continue to exist and
advance and is an inevitable force that can’t be stopped.

This is an article on career path. It focuses on how we can prepare our children for their future. In this fast paced changing world, we need to equip them and ready when they reach their maturity.

THE WORLD IS CHANGING fast. Economy is erratic, technology is constantly changing, demography and climate is shifting and national security needs manpower that is internationally competent and expert in foreign languages and culture.

In this current climate of globalization, new skills are needed to cope with changes and to achieve professional success. If one would wish to rise above as a leader, or be able to survive the trend, he or she must be able to develop the following **skills:

Work in teams and be able to collaborate in international settings,

Be creative, innovative and able to speak other languages,

Think critically and communicate clearly.

(**Reference: Article on Preparing the Next Generation for the Global Age by Vivien Stewart)

Also required for an employee or a professional is having the ability to think globally, being flexible in a changing world, and being able to develop appropriate strategies. These are skills, which are not learned from our current educational system because not all curriculum cater to this need nor are programs designed to meet this need.

So what can the new graduates do to develop above requirements? We must learn to take the initiative in developing ourselves. One keyword is to READ voraciously. Reading materials on areas of our interest will provide us insights of the current set-up and envision where it is being headed. Reading also provides us an opportunity to expand our analytical skills and digest information that are factual and those, which are merely myths. It also provides us an understanding of past records or how things came about. In reading, we learn to discern which are real and which are not.

Let us explore possibilities of being able to practice through training. We can volunteer on projects not for the purpose of gaining monetary pay but for the sole purpose of learning. When one learns to work without expecting compensation, his faculties start to process and see more possibilities because it is not restrained by the expectation of a monetary reward.

In general, let us teach our youths to be more creative, innovative, hardworking, analytical, and be an effective communicator through reading and exploration. Let us start with ourselves and become role models as well.

Why the government does NOT have the right to control the internet.

Last week, hundreds of very famous (and infamous) blogs and websites went “dark” in protest of the SOPA/PIPA laws that congress is currently debating. But do you know why these laws are being protested?

These laws, although aiming to target and put an end to piracy, may shut down many well-known websites that you use every day. This may cause damage to thousands of American corporations. Americans constantly criticize the Chinese government for controlling their internet usage, while slowly but surely, the government has began taken away our freedoms online.

The reason: money. That’s right. Lobbeyists across the nation are rooting to make sure that television networks and movie production companies get their “fair share” of earnings. That’s a pretty bold statement to make, especially considering a large majority of the American population is on minimum wage. I think these large companies already get their fair share, and much more.

We are being asked to pay for more and more every day. The cost of going to a University is now way outweighing the benefits of having a degree. We have to pay for things that should be easily accessible and free by the companies that make the products that need these tools: antiviruses, game add-ons, network tools, etc. Unfortunately, the corporations in America have done everything they can to take away our access to free movies, games, videos, e-books, and now they are trying to take away our ability to even access websites that DON’T engage in these illegal activities. I mean, I understand the threat of piracy to some (very specific) large corporations, but there is a much bigger issue at play here. Americans can’t afford entertainment. We can’t afford to pay $20 for a DVD on top of rent payments, internet access, bills, gas, and a new cell phone every time your “battery gets wet” because most phone companies won’t just replace the damn battery. Our government lets us get cheated by corporation everywhere, and then punishes us when we cheat back?

If the government was willing to protect its citizens from being charged fees for every small detail of our lives (many of them necessary), maybe people wouldn’t be stealing entertainment from the internet, because they could actually afford to buy the things they enjoy. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather own the DVD then have a bad theatre rip on my computer any day.
