And the names keep rolling out...

As we all know, the 14th season of ABC’s slam dunk reality TV show, Dancing with the Stars is slated to commence on March 19, 2012, but this time the show promises to be totally different – bigger and better than ever before!

Why, recent years have seen fans complain about the quality/popularity (or lack thereof) of some of the stars they have so far been seeing on airings of the show’s previous seasons. And indeed, it would appear that there is a significant need for more celebrities who are world famous and still well known, and not just has-beens, people popular because of their past associations and families, or folks who are merely famous… for being famous. So, this time, the producers of the show have decided that they are going to make this one bigger and better than ever before.

Yep, there’s a ‘wow’-er lineup this year, just as the producers promised – big and bigger names than ever before, becuase what they want to do this time is please the ever growing community of fans of the show. That’s why March 19th first of all will have Tom Bergeron and Brooke Burke Charvet returning as hosts, and Len Goodman will again team up with Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli as the mean, nice, and not-so-nice judges. Rumors that have surfaced recently that the show plans to bring back Season 1 co-host Lisa Canning and Samantha Harris from seasons 2 through 9 appear untrue as the February 28, 2012 release date for the announcement of the new cast memebers draws closer.

Whatever happens, it will be a good morning indeed on Good Morning America when the list finally does come out. Rumored participants and hopefuls already include big names such as Tina Fey and Courtney Cox – you know them: the Sarah Palin mimicking star formerly of SNL (Saturday Night Live), and the former Friends TV show actress. Fey is reportedly a good dancer in her own right, and Cox isn’t too shabby either.

And then, we have impressive names like comedy/action movie actor Vince Vaughn as well, not to mention singer-songwriter-dancer-model-and-English-reocrding-artist Cheryl Ann Cole, supermodel Elle MacPherson, actor Rob Lowe, and others yet to be announced. Truth be told, these are mostly just fan hopefuls for the show, but we all agree that a reality show airing on ABC in the United States, and CTV in Canada sporting stars that own these names and many others like them would be totally awesome… certainly a lot bigger than its British television parent Strictly Come Dancing could ever hope attain.

I mean, other names of stars who have been approached already include Jersey Shore actress Jenni Farely, former 2012 presidential hopeful Michele Bachman, also called JWoWW, was approached by the producers to join the cast for Season 14. She is a star on Jersey Shore, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, and… wow, what a wishlist!

And so we look forward to that day only days from today when the producers of Dancing With the Stars will bless us with the names of this year’s celebrity participants of the show – A-list actors, singers, models… STARS in every respect. One cannot deny the fact that this reality show has been assembling a wild bunch of celebrities, so this season the producers are aiming to get some A-lists stars. For Season 14, they are hoping to get some of the celebrities who have created some of the most popular headlines.

A review of the new series of Being Human, summarising the previous three series and introducing the new characters featured in Series Four.

Being Human is a BBC television series in which a vampire, a werewolf and a ghost share a house. The fourth series has just started in the UK and, if you’ve never seen it before, bear with me, it really does work.

Series 1 took us through how the three main characters met and drifted into sharing a house together. We have Mitchell, a handsome 120-year old vampire, George a geeky newly-converted werewolf and Annie, a confused and unhappy ghost. The being human of the title concerns the efforts of our heroes to be normal, to be, as far as supernatural creatures can be, human. In Mitchell’s case this means restraining himself from the urge to rip people’s throats open and drink their blood and, for George, it is the need to avoid tearing apart anyone within reach every full moon.

All three series have given us some gripping drama, covering profound issues of life and death, good and evil, tolerance and prejudice and a pondering of what it is to be human. There’s comedy too; very dark, but also very funny. The humour comes from the frequent incongruity of the human and supernatural worlds existing alongside each other and from the mundane reality of house sharing. Would you tell a powerful, formerly murderous, vampire to do his own bloody washing up? The programme also benefits from having three central characters who are all pretty damn sexy!

Original cast: Mitchell (Aidan Turner), George (Russell Tovey) and Annie (Lenora Crichlow)

So far Being Humanhas taken us through the back-story of the three main characters and, in Series 1, shown us the attempts of the evil vampires to tempt Mitchell, their former poster boy, away from his new friends back to his old, bloodsucking ways. In Series 2 sees George falling in love with a girl called Lucy who, we later learn, is in thrall to the leader of a sinister sect that wants to destroy all supernatural beings. Meanwhile, Mitchell and Annie are falling in love. By Series 3 Mitchell and Annie are so deeply in love that he goes into purgatory, quite literally, to save her. George, meanwhile, falls in love with Nina, accidentally coverts her into a werewolf and then gets her pregnant . At the conclusion of the series, Mitchell persuades George to kill him, to save Mitchell from himself and the world from Mitchell. At the end of a very busy day for George, Nina is also killed, but their baby survives.

The opening episode of Series 4 was about moving on from the demise of three of the previous mainstays of the show: Mitchell, George’s girlfriend Nina and the evil, wise-cracking vampire leader, Herrick. We are also introduced to a new character, Hal; clearly a direct replacement for Mitchell. Played by Damien Moloney, Hal is an urbane, soft-spoken vampire and, we learn, is one of the legendary ‘old ones’. Back to the happy house-sharing trio, then? Not quite. George is still around for now, but actor Russell Tovey wants to leave the show so his character is being eased out. Cometh the hour, cometh the man, and into George’s shoes steps Tom (Michael Socha). Tom was previously best supporting werewolf in Series 3, (surely that should be a new Oscars category?). He is now the main (wolf) man. Watch out Hal, this doggie ain’t too fond of vampires.

Series 4 Cast: Hal (Damien Moloney), Annie (Lenora Crichlow) and Tom (Michael Socha).

Note that a brooding, wraith-like George (Russell Tovey) hovers at the margins

In the series opener, the vampires are on the warpath, literally. They have decided that enough is enough and it’s time they made war on humankind; killing most of us, converting some and enslaving the rest, presumably as blood donors. Not sure how they work out who goes into which category, but I assume the selection process will be equal opportunities compliant.

George and Nina’s new baby daughter will feature in this series too. It is broadly hinted that she will be the saviour of the world. George, after more brooding, calls her Eve. Pretty heavy on the biblical allegory there, one has to say. And is it just me, or is there some political comment in there too? Why else is the leader of the evil vampires, Herrick’s replacement, called Griffin?

I can’t wait to get my teeth into the rest of the series. Watch it!

Being Human plays on BBC 3 television on Sundays at 9.00 pm

Dramatized Biography based on real events in Cass Pennant's life.

Cass Pennant

Cass Pennant: (Narrating-directly to audience) Abandoned when I was six weeks old. The leader of one of the most notorious football hooligan firms by the age of twenty, jailed for four years just years later and shot three times and I am still alive to tell the tale. My name’s Cass.

Cass Pennant: (Narrating) As ya can tell, my life hasn’t exactly been plain sailing. Being the only black boy in my home town of Slade Green, I experienced racism day after day. In fact I was beaten constantly, sometimes by random passers-by. My real parents threw me into care just weeks after I was born. Even to this day I do not know who they are, or their reasons for abandoning me. But, Doll Chambers bless her heart and her husband Cecil, decided to foster me, a black baby from Dr Barnado’s orphanage.

Cass Pennant: (Narrating) It was at the age of ten when I started suffering the full consequences of being the only black boy in the Slade Green. I only had one wish, and that was to look like everyone else. Every morning, I awoke, dreading another day at school. The violence started as soon as I stepped out the house. The lady I called Mum, Doll, would make me my favourite breakfast, but I always left it lying on the table. I had to make sure I was early so I could escape the brutal beating from the boys who would wait for me on the bridge.

(Sound of knife and folks clattering)

Doll Chambers: Come on son, you’re gonna’ be late again! Come eat ya breakie?

Cass Pennant: I ain’t hungry.

Doll Chambers: You’re never hungry in the morning. I do worry about you son.

Cass Pennant: I’ll be late, I’ve got to go.

Cass Pennant: (Narrating) However, I wasn’t always that lucky; more often than not they would be there, waiting. It came part of my daily routine. The bullying wasn’t just because of my skin colour. There was a problem with my name as well. I was given the name Carol when I was at Dr Barnado’s. That was another reason why I was tormented daily. Imagine if you were growing up on the outskirts of London with the name Carol! Then, one day, I found myself watching a boxing match, Cassius Clay vs. Henry Cooper. Clay was the best fighter I had ever seen. That’s how I adopted the name Cass.

(Sound of bath filling up)

Doll Chambers: Violence isn’t going to get you anywhere Carol.

Cass Pennant: Stop f**king calling me Carol!

Doll Chambers: (Angrily) Don’t you dare talk to your mother like that!

Cass Pennant: It’s a girl’s name! Why can’t you call me Cass? That’s what my mates call me.

Cass Pennant: (Narrating) And that’s how it happened. At the age of 16, my old man, Cecil decided to take me to see his beloved football team, West Ham. His pre-match rituals involved a double helping of cash (pie and mash), and a few pints in the Boleyn pub in Upton Park. I remember it like it was yesterday. From outside, I could hear the wonderful noise of West Ham fans in full voice. However, as soon as I walked in the pub, everything changed.

(Football chants followed by an awkward silence)

West Ham Fan: Who the hell is this Pat Boom (Coon) that you’ve brought into the pub?

Cecil: Easy mate, he’s just a kid.

West Ham Fan: (Rudely) Country’s gone to pot if you ask me.

Cecil: Don’t worry son, ignore him.

Cass Pennant: (Narrating) The whole place went quiet. I could feel everyone’s eyes staring at me, almost like I was an alien. But no matter how bad it got, my Dad was always there to pat me on the back and reassure me I would be alright.

Cass Pennant: (Narrating) Two years later, I returned to Upton Park to see West Ham with a couple of mates. Wolverhampton Wanderers at home. A 3-3 draw meant both teams had to take a share of the points. We were walking back to the train station after the match, when we decided to take a short cut down a back road. In the distance we could see a blur of figures accompanied by the noise of intimidating chants. We walked a little closer, and discovered the Wolverhampton fans had bumped into West ham after the game. I promised my Mum I would not get in any more trouble, and walked off in the opposite direction. We turned the corner, and saw another group of men, who looked familiar.

Hooligan 1: Oi are you Wolves scum?

Cass Pennant: No no, look at our shirts! We’re West Ham. They’ve brought a proper naughty firm mate.

Hooligan 2: In that case follow us or p*ss off home!

Cass Pennant: (Narrating) I knew I shouldn’t have followed them, but never being able to walk away from a good scrap, I did. This was the moment that changed my whole life.

Cass Pennant: (Narrating) Now, I had been in fights before, but this was different. You could feel the pure hatred in the air. Grown men determined to prove a point to the opposition through violence. However, after the violence had finished, members of West Ham United’s hooligan firm, the ICF, shook my hand. For the first time in my life I felt accepted. It was the months and years that followed that my life was completely transformed. I no longer experienced constant racist abuse. I had earned respect. In fact I became the leading figure in West Ham’s hooligan firm who travelled around the country visiting football grounds. Unfortunately it wasn’t the game that we remembered. All we remembered was our weekly fix of football violence that every ‘ooligan lived for.

(Sound of cameras taking pictures)

Margaret Thatcher: I wish we could get those responsible, and give them stiff sentences to prevent anyone else from ruining the wonderful game.

Cass Pennant: (Narrating) Then Thatcher came into office. She promised to crack down on football hooliganism. She wanted to put an end to our ‘little games’. It was only weeks after that I found myself making one of the biggest jaffa’s [cake] (mistakes) I have ever made in my life. Me and the ICF boys didn’t think we were getting enough recognition for the ‘work’ we was doing at the weekend. We completely forgot that what we were doing was actually illegal. We agreed to appear on national television to talk about football hooliganism. Even though we remained nameless, our faces were being beamed into every living room in England. It wasn’t until I arrived home that night, I realised how much of a mug I had been.

(Sound of key unlocking door)

Cass Pennant: Alright Mum, did you see me on the Television?

Doll Chambers: Yes I did! The whole of England did! What was you thinking!

Cass Pennant: Give me a break mum, I got paid good bee’s (money) for that!

Doll Chambers: You’ve gotta break out of this stupid habit or you’ll be locked up Cass!

Cass Pennant: (Narrating) Then came the big one, Leeds United Away. This was the game that would separate the men from the kids. The perfect opportunity to prove to the footballing world that we were the top firm in England. Me and the boys met outside the pub to prepare for the fight of our lives…

Cass Pennant: This is the one lads. No going back now. We go for the top boys first, and the rest will crumble. This has got to be clean, and quick. If anyone of us gets caught, we all go down.

Cass Pennant: (Narrating) Old Bill somehow knew about our plans. They were waiting for us after the attack. Being six foot, and the only black man in the firm, it wasn’t hard for them to find me. I was arrested, and sentenced to 4 years,

Cass Pennant: (Narrating) Anyone who says they liked prison is lying. It was terrifying, even for me. I had a lot of free time to think about what I had done. I decided to write an autobiography to keep my brain active. I always fancied myself as an author in school. On my day of release, I returned to the main office to receive my belongings. I had 6 notepads in my hand which I had used to write my autobiography. Like everything in my life, taking the books out of the prison would not be as easy as I first thought.

Cass Pennant: Cass Pennant…

Police Attendant: Here you go, Carol Pennant. Excuse me, what’s that you’ve got there?

Cass Pennant: Just a few things I’ve just been writing

Police Attendant: Prison rules state you cannot take anything out of here that you did not have when you entered

Cass Pennant: Come on mate, that’s my future.

Police Attendant: What future is there for a pathetic football hooligan like you?

Cass Pennant: (Narrating) Luckily for me, someone from the prison read what I had written, and managed to get the books back to me. I hoped to try to publish them in the future. I decided my days in the ICF were over, and managed to get a job as a bouncer at a local club. I met a girl, Elaine, who later became my wife. We even had a child together. However, my past as a football ‘ooligan never seemed to disappear. I had made many enemies in my time, who wanted revenge. When word got around that I was working as a bouncer I was literally a sitting duck. On a cold November night, my life took another dramatic turn…

Cass Pennant: Alright lads, we expecting another full house here then?

Bouncer 1: Cass, behind you!

Arsenal Hooligan: Oi! black West Ham b*stard! (Sound of three gunshots)

Cass Pennant: (Narrating) Shot three times in the chest. The doctors said I should ‘ave been brown bread (dead) but I believe the love from my wife Elaine helped me to pull through. The shooting hadn’t just affected me physically. I suffered many mental problems. I continuously had visions of my attacker pointing a gun at me. It was driving me insane. I had to do something about it and when one of my old mates phoned me to tell me he knew who my attacker was, something inside made me wanna kill him to put an end to the torture.

Cass Pennant: (Narrating) I had tracked my attacker, an Arsenal fan down to a pub in North London. I had got hold of a gun, and made the short journey from the East End. I entered the pub and immediately recognized my target. The boys followed me in, all armed with weapons. I pointed the gun at the mug’s head…

Cass Pennant: You alright mate? You look a bit scared.

Arsenal Hooligan: Please Cass, kill me and you’ll be straight back in prison again!

Cass Pennant: Get on your knees and beg.

West Ham Hooligan: What you waiting for Cass, take the pr*cks head off!

Arsenal Hooligan: Please Cass, Please!

Cass Pennant: (Narrating) But I didn’t pull the trigger. Standing in that pub made me realise that all the sh*t I’d been through was caused by me. I wanted to see my child grow up. I felt like I was responsible to guide him on the right path in life, like my mother had tried to do with me. I’ve spent my spare time finishing my autobiography which I released in 2002. I’ve also published many other books as well as setting up my own publishing company.

Cass Pennant: (Narrating) In my life, I had experienced more violence than you would ever want in one thousand lifetimes. I had been beaten, stabbed and shot, but I handed out my fair share as well. I have learnt there are better things to enjoy in life rather than kicking someone’s loaf’a bread (head) in over a football match. This has been the story of a reformed hooligan, me, Carol Pennant.

Mass media are means of communication that are used to reach the general public for the purpose of creating audiences for information, artistic expression, and other kinds of messages.

Mass media are means of communication that are used to reach the general public for the purpose of creating audiences for information, artistic expression, and other kinds of messages. The word mass suggests large numbers of people. Yet the term is subjective, with standards of measurement relative to the normal capabilities of a given medium; 1 million books sold nationally is more impressive than a national television audience of 1 million viewers. The word media is also commonly used as an aggregate noun to refer to the entire industry. A perceived homogeneity or sameness of point of view is often the reason for this.

The ability to reach large segments of the public is of great value in commerce, politics, and a society’s culture. The mass media are usually controlled by corporations (as in the United States) or by national governments (as in China). The mass-media industry employs professionals to conceive, produce, promote, and deliver communication products that are specifically designed to meet the goal of attracting large audiences. These products may be sold as objects (such as books—or downloaded e-books—or digital videodiscs [DVDs]) or exhibited for the price of a ticket or subscription (such as movies shown in cinemas or on premium or pay-for-view cable TV channels). Some services may be offered at no cash cost to consumers so as to create an audience for paid advertising (such as commercial television or radio broadcasts or Internet sites). Most newspapers and magazines are sold directly to the reader but depend on selling advertisements for their profitability. A growing number of newspapers and magazines are available online for no fee; this “freebie” has proved to be a challenge for the cash-strapped print media.

No communication technology is inherently a mass medium. Rather, it becomes such a medium through usage. Radio was invented at the end of the 19th century primarily for use as a two-way communication system to serve industrial shipping and naval operations. In the 1920s corporate decisions were made by several major electronics manufacturers to mass-produce inexpensive radio receivers for retail sale and to operate radio stations as incentives for consumers to buy those receivers. Thus radio broadcasting—a mass medium—was born; it quickly grew into the primary use of that medium. Television developed in the opposite way. It was first introduced to the general public as a mass medium in the late 1940s. Decades later the development of such supplementary appliances as the videocassette recorder and the home video camera allowed for its use as an interpersonal medium. The telephone has been an example of a medium of interpersonal communication that remained, primarily, just that. It was only occasionally used as a mass medium; telemarketers use computers to automatically dial thousands of phone numbers for the purpose of reaching a potential customer or playing recorded messages. Letter writing has historically been an interpersonal medium. Yet direct mailing of millions of letters of solicitation by post or by e-mail constitutes the use of the letter as a mass medium.

History

Mass media are essentially an industrial-era phenomenon. The first commercial printing industry during the early 18th century sprang up around London’s Grub Street. This is often cited as a beginning for mass media because of the recognizable economic system that was put into place. It was there that publishing found its early commercial applications; hand-operated printing presses were used to produce and reproduce thousands of copies of inexpensive literary products—including novels (”penny-dreadfuls”) and magazines. These were sold for profit to a growing audience of rudimentary readers. Publishing had previously depended on the clergy or the aristocracy for funding rather than on retail marketing.

A string of communication technologies were introduced during the 19th century and accelerated the development of the mass media. The invention of the steam-powered printing press (along with increasing literacy rates) gave rise to mass circulation of newspapers and magazines. These types of mass-produced print products—as well as books—were commonly available for sale in Europe and North America by the 1860s. Photography was invented in the 1820s. Methods for reproducing photographs in the print media were improved throughout the century and made such media ever more attractive to consumers. The development of still photography led to the invention of the motion picture. The cinema was an entirely new means of communication that showed great potential for mass-media application.

In the 1830s the telegraph was invented and was in practical use by the late 1840s. It was perhaps the single most important invention in the history of mass communication. It revolutionized existing media by supplying newspapers and magazines with a continuous stream of news dispatches from the region and even the nation. The Atlantic cable was completed in 1863; newspapers could then acquire information from around the world. Newspapers and magazines were bolstered by the resources of the telegraphic wire services and eventually achieved circulations numbering in the millions. Thus print became the first of the modern mass media.

Other types of media were gaining public attention on this scale by the turn of the 20th century. Silent movies became increasingly popular. Dramatic narratives provided the main audience draw, with the newsreel and the documentary film also garnering viewers. Attendance grew as the introduction of synchronous sound to feature films in 1927 married voice with picture.

The phonograph (invented in 1877) emerged as a mass medium as well. It achieved wider use as electrification of homes allowed for replacement of hand-cranked mechanical models. Sales of recordings reached mass proportions during the 1920s, with commercial radio used to popularize musical genres and to make stars of artists. The first U.S. commercial radio station went on the air in 1920. Radio networks linked stations in various parts of the country to carry a single program simultaneously by 1927.

By the mid-20th century, newspapers and magazines, movies, phonograph records, and radio programs were all conveniently available to most of the American population. These media provided many aspects of cultural learning to a sizable number of people. Eventually these mass media began to rival such traditional cultural determinants as family and religion. Some saw this as a natural and positive extension of democracy. Others criticized the mass media for failing to propagate existing culture and replacing it with a new mass culture based on consumerism at the expense of traditional or any other values.

Broadcast television emerged as the nexus of the mass media during the 1950s. It contained news, drama, cinema, music, and at least some content from all other mass media in a single, convenient home appliance. Television’s overwhelming functionality was soon dictating supplementary roles to other components of the mass media. Radio began to produce specialized programming for smaller target audiences. TV absorbed general-interest entertainment—from drama and comedy to variety—which had been among radio’s most popular attractions. Newspaper circulation had started to decline in the 1930s as radio journalism proved itself both faster and more popular. The number of daily U.S. newspapers began to drop precipitously with the spread of television. Most cities were left with only a single newspaper publisher. Many general-interest magazines disappeared as well; publishers sought the smaller and specialized audiences that television did not serve. Motion-picture attendance declined in the face of television’s at-home convenience.

Mass Media Today

Evolving technologies continue to drive the development of mass media. Instantaneous communication is a process that originated with the telegraph; it reached a milestone with the successful launchings of communications satellites into low Earth orbit. The first of these was Telstar 1 (1962). It orbited the Earth at a speed faster than the Earth revolves. This allowed for “windows” of time when video and audio transmissions could be made within a shifting orbital footprint. There are now dozens of high-capacity communications satellites in synchronous orbit; a reporter may attach a camera or microphone to a laptop computer and report live via satellite from virtually any location in the world.

The nationwide dissemination of cable TV was a process that took decades because of the necessity of seeking legal franchises in virtually every U.S. municipality. Cable subscription reached a saturation point in the late 1980s. The new mass medium began to remake TV in much the same way that the introduction of TV had remade radio and magazines. Cable channels sought smaller audiences with special target interests for advertisers specifically intent on reaching these audiences. But that changed in the first decade of the 21st century; both the number of cable channels and the size of audiences grew. Millions turned to cable news channels for presidential election coverage in 2008.

The 1990s, meanwhile, were marked by an explosive growth in online services for people who used computers and had access to the Internet. Critics hoped that the Internet might offer an alternative or even a counterforce to mass-media influence over public taste and public opinion (with e-mail, newsgroups, and chat rooms).

Mass-media ownership was characterized by concentration of ownership through mergers and acquisitions in the late 20th and the early 21st century. In the United States a consistent trend of deregulation since the 1980s left most of the television industry (as well as other mass media) in the hands of fewer than a dozen companies.

The 2001 merger of Time Warner—an integrated mass-media company with holdings in publishing, film and television, radio, recording, and just about every other form of mass communication—with America Online (AOL), the then-largest Internet service provider, epitomized this trend. This deal, however, was struck at the height of enthusiasm for Internet and media stocks. When new technologies were created, new online providers jumped in. AOL began to lose many of its users. This was followed by highs and lows in the stock market; a recession ensued in 2007. Time Warner and AOL “divorced” in 2009. As part of the split, Time Warner kept the entertainment site TMZ (Thirty Mile Zone) as well as CNN (Cable News Network), HBO (Home Box Office), TBS (Turner Broadcasting System), and TNT (Turner Network Television).

Large media companies—such as General Electric, Westinghouse, News Corporation, and the Bertelsmann Group—also lost their luster by the end of the first decade of the new millennium. Their success had been fueled largely by a surplus of stock portfolios and the oversized presence—and dreams—of modern moguls.

Mass Media and Democracy

When mass-media ownership was in the hands of a limited number of companies, fewer communicators (and fewer types of communicators) were available to supply users with content. Although this changed with the advent of the Internet, television—both network and cable—remained the major source of news for many individuals. Political or social biases (whether perceived or actual) in the media have compelled some viewers to identify themselves in political terms—liberal, conservative, radical, reactionary. Many of these viewers, in turn, read or watch media material that accords with their own ideology.

The challenge to active participation in democracy was further compounded when the mass media seemed to be in concert about which issues to cover. Some critics think that the inclusion of foreign-based news organizations broadens the variety of American news coverage. Evidence of this appeared during the 2003 Iraq War; radio and television coverage included that by the British Broadcasting Corporation. The fact that a number of important American newspapers (and television stations) are moving to outsource foreign coverage in order to save money may have a significant effect on domestic issues in the future.

The diminishing coverage of world events is the result of budget constraints; it may also be caused by physical inaccessability to newsworthy places because of censorship or lack of a free press. Foreign reporters were banned from Iran after the controversial presidential election of 2009. Yet thousands of videos taken by Iranian citizens during election protests were uploaded to the social media site YouTube and were broadcast on TV stations and Internet sites around the world. In this way, a degree of public access to world news is growing; making this growth possible are new technology and participation of individuals who make their images available to the mass media.

The Effects of Mass Media

Because of their central position as a source of cultural and social learning, the mass media are easily, and often, blamed for many of society’s ills. Some researchers believe that the mass media shape the way people view the world, especially when people have little direct experience. Others point to the media as providing role models—positive and negative—imitated by members of the audience. The portrayal of violence in the media is perhaps the most prominent issue. Other behavioral areas are of concern as well, such as explicit sex or extremely coarse language. These arguments tend to be based on a couple of suppositions: one is that the experience of content presented by contemporary mass media differs in some qualitative way from material that people have been exposed to since the beginning of social communication; the other is that individuals will copy or be influenced by what they view. Attempts to hold mass-media corporations legally responsible for the criminal acts of the consumers of their products have failed. A general consensus has been reached that people will have to continue to be responsible for their own behaviors in the age of mass media.

The role of media and its effects.

Electronic media has gained counter stage within a very short span of time. Whether it is news, sports, politics, entertainment, everyone remains glued to the TV set to get or see their thing of interest. Hence electronic media have captivated the attention and mind of million throughout the world. Not only electronic media playing a vital role by giving us information about the on goings around the world, but it also evokes many people to come and face the real truth of the world. It has also started to play a prominent role in decision making of the people. As electronic media brings to light some of the hidden secret in front of us, we come to real terms with the existing truth and how are we to equip ourselves to face such tyrannous situations. If we take a few instances like corruption, illegal possession of land and property, conspiracy, sabotage, etc., all the truths of various persons associated on concertinaed are being shown in the true colour in front of the mass. Not only is electronic media confined to these, but even entertainment shows and sports related information are also being highlighted for the people and hence they receive their daily dose of information.

But, electronic media too has its consequences. It is often seen that in the urge of popularity, some electronic media agencies publish a telecast event which is actually fake, thereby spreading rumours and affecting the conscience and decision making of the people. Also due to competition among the electronic media agencies, they get into the matter which is not to be shown to the common man. One can take the example of 26/11 Mumbai attack few years ago. As the electronic media were capturing the movement of the armed force and security personals, the terrorists from the inside the building using the TV sets were able to see it and take necessary precautions to combat the armed forces. Thus, we observe that electronic media has had a great impact on the society in both positive and negative but one can say that it has done more good for the society.
