Enjoy what you do, especially if it's for a living, because surely money will simply flow your way despite the struggles and difficulties sometimes encountered.

It is true indeed, that when you love what you do, no matter what happens, money will surely follow. I hope I’m not making it sound like a nonsense, but truly, I’ve experience it myself.

I’ve been a quality assurance tester for two years now; and still the fulfillment with my work never fades. I enjoy what I do and despite the challenges and difficulties encountered, it simply pass me by without so much of a damage.

As a matter of fact, last 2008, the company I’ve previously worked for, like any other struggling company, have experienced the toll of recession. As a result, many employees were laid-off and I was one of them. I should have been miserable because of what happened, but I didn’t think of it that way. I empowered myself by updating my resume and went on crazy submitting them on-line.

Believe it or not, I was hired in no time after being laid-off, by a much bigger company, situated in a much bigger city which I believe has much more opportunities waiting to be tackled. The best thing happened: I was hired as a quality assurance tester! No doubt that I was very much thankful. I didn’t go into the trouble of demoting my skills and experience to get back on the career journey like most laid-off employee would do.

I don’t know what you call it: being lucky; positive thinking; good karma. But one thing is clear for me: love what you do and money will surely follow. I am one of those living witnesses that when you simply enjoy whatever means of living you have, money is so easy~!

Do you love your work? Why do you love it? Here is why I love mine.

I am currently working as a web tester in a Canada-based outsourcing company here in the Philippines, and I basically love my work because of the following reasons:

It is related to the course I graduated in college.

I graduated with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and ended up, well, being a web tester which basically involves the things I studied back in college. In the Philippines, most of the college graduates do not end up with work that evolves around the degree they paid for and worked hard for. Most of my batchmates who took a degree in Commerce, ended up as sales lady in malls or super markets. I, for one, started out as a sales lady in a computer shop after graduation. It took me a year to find the “perfect fit” job that I love and suits me just well. What I’m saying here is that I’m pretty lucky I ended up in the kind of job that I really paid for and worked hard for in college.

The Hefty Salary

Salary satisfaction differs from one individual to another. And for me, I can say it is quite enough and sometimes, more than enough. Being the eldest in the family and the very first to graduate, I am obliged to help my parents in any way I can, specifically in terms of financial matters — it is a Filipino tradition. With the salary that I am receiving, I am able to help them in so many ways. For me, there is no such thing as too little of an amount. It is just a matter of proper budgeting and handling of money — knowing the difference between needs and wants.

Benefits and bonsuses that cater to the well-being of employees

Like any other “good” company, we too have benefits. Aside from the benefits mandated by law, there are extras that comes solely from the company. These extras include wellness programs (beauty and health), monetary allowances (fare and food), and seminars or activities such as team-buildings. There is also quite a number of flexible break-time (a total of 2 hours and 30 mins) to make you feel less pressured. I included these extras as part of the benefits because some of the companies does not cater these things to their employees. They probably care less on the employee’s well-being and care more on their company’s profit, which is a bit wrong. All of these benefits and extras are enforced so that employees can cope up with stress, among others.

Unlimited access to the Internet.

Since our work involves the web, there is a need for employees to access the internet – more than 8 hours, 5 days a week, in a month. I just love this part! It is because this is where I get to access interesting and knowledgeable articles published from around the globe. Articles that involve about web testing, web development, technology and practically all other topics under the sun. These kinds of stuff are my brain-food and keeps me inspired to do things. It just opens my mind to endless possibilities…

Getting exposed to different cultures and services around the globe.

Since we are dealing with offshore clients, we get to be exposed to their cultures, attitudes and principles. It helps one to have the need for open-mindedness and be receptive about things. With the different variations of ideas from these clients, I get to be exposed to their ideas as well as to their services. Through this, I get to be aware about things and ideas that are not just in a box, but things and ideas out of the ordinary.

These are not just limited to the reasons mentioned above. I could go on citing other reasons, especially on a more personal note, but that is just ridiculous. One thing that I am sure of is that I just love my work and I will do my very best to expand my knowledge and skills that would both benefit me and my company. I love it so much that I give my thanks to the Lord above, each and everyday I wake up. Nothing can stop me from staying in this company – not even for love or marriage or anything else. I will continue to stay on this company even if clients cease to exist anymore (kidding!).

I know there is no such thing as a perfect life or a perfect job, but it just happens that I love the work I have now and am very happy about it. That is why when things don’t happen according to what I wanted or expected them to be, I just keep in mind that I am one lucky gal who has a job that I enjoy doing. And besides, I get to work with friends who keep on supporting.

How about you, why do you love your job (assuming you love it)?
