A sign of health or a sign of wealth? From past to present, beauty for men and women...

Build: Nowadays, a woman who wants to make a career in the world of fashion has to watch her weight. However, during most of our history, being plump was considered more attractive for women: it showed that they didn’t have to work and could afford good food. However, the story is a little different for men. In Greek or Roman society, people thought that a muscular physique was the most attractive symbol of masculinity and this idea has continued through the centuries with a few small changes. For example, in the Middle Ages, men wore tights or stockings so it was fashionable to have muscular legs and thighs. Today, in the age of the T-shirt, men worry more about arm and chest muscles. It is still fashionable for men to look fit as it suggests you take your health seriously.

Hair: Queen Elizabeth The First started going bald at an early age. She started a fashion for wigs in England. The fashion spread and eventually wigs were popular with both sexes for the next three hundred years. Wigs became a status symbol – the bigger the wig, the more important you were. However, there was another reason that wigs were an advantage. In those days, even rich people rarely washed and the unhygienic conditions attracted fleas and other pests. Shaving off your hair and wearing a wig was often the only answer. People used animal fat to keep the wigs in place -the smell must have been terrible!

Skin: During the Renaissance in Europe it was unfashionable to have a dark complexion because it was a sign that you worked outside. Because of this, men and women did everything they could to keep their skin pale -often women used dangerous chemicals to paint their faces, which sometimes resulted in a painful death. This didn’t change until the 1920s when Coco Chanel, a famous fashion designer, accidentally fell asleep in the sun. The suntan was born and remained popular for the rest of the twentieth century -an easy way to show that you were rich enough to spend your holidays in exotic, sunny places!

The Renaissance time period started around the mid 1400s and ended in about the early 1600s. It was a major period focused on plays, art, music, and a rebirth in knowledge.

This time era was focused pretty much on the reflection of art. People also began to go to school to learn about their history, science, and their culture. Many famous artists first began in this time frame; including, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and many others.

The Mona Lisa

Artists during the Renaissance time period were considered to have a unique style by using their imagination and interest in art. Many famous artists became well known during this time, for example, Michelangelo. Michelangelo created the Sistine Chapel. Another person who was a famous artist was Leonardo da Vinci, who created Mona Lisa, also known as La Gioconda. Raphael was a very famous Italian Renaissance artist, who created the Stanza della Segnatura.

Stanza della Segnatura

The history of acting was completely changed during the Renaissance time era. People really began watching plays during this time because the directors and creators had a lot more to offer. They offered many different types of genres, for example, comedy, drama, romance, or a combination of them all. A very famous play writer then was William Shakespeare. He wrote Romeo and Juliet, The Tempest, Midsummer Nights Dream, and many more. There are a whole bunch of play writers during this time that got famous but, not all of them stayed famous, unlike William Shakespeare, who is famous to this day.

Another famous trait about the renaissance time period is the massive change in knowledge. People consider this time to be a change from god to man. During this time Christopher Columbus discovered the “New World,” Amerigo Vespucci discovered America, and many other discoveries took place. Things discovered ranged from microscope and telescope lenses, to wallpaper. The pendulum clock, the printing press, wallpaper, telescope and microscope lenses, a flush toilet, and the submarine, were all inventions of during the renaissance time era. If it weren’t for all of these inventions and discoveries, you probably wouldn’t be reading this paper right now.

The Temple of Vesta

There are many wonderful things about the Renaissance time era. Art, music, knowledge, and acting are just some of the few wonderful things about this time. People look at this time as a time of war and depression but, there was actually more entertainment than there was war. If I could chose whether to stay in this time or in that time, I would want to go to that time just to experience the plays, music, and see the art all up front and personal. If people skipped over the Renaissance time period everything would be very different.
