How science and technology evolve and how it affects our lives.

Our ancestors fashioned their tools from metals even before the science of metallurgy was know. Early people produced and drank wine, and used cosmetics even before the process of fermentation and the science of cosmetology were known and develop.

During early days, science and technology were separated from each other. Science belonged to philosophers while technology belonged to the tanners, millers, and silversmiths.

In the thirteenth century, science and technology became more closely related. We owe this to Roger Bacon (1214-1294). He designed experiments to confirm scientific theories. This led to a program of reforms in which new areas of scientific studies were opened in the universities of the west. These scientific studies brought together science and technology.

In the nineteenth century, many inventors based their inventions on the works of scientists. Examples are:

1. Thomas Edison (1847-1931), the inventor of the electric lamp, based his invention on what Michael Faraday (1791-1867) and Joseph Henry (1797-1878) discovered about electricity.

2. Alexander Graham Bell (1847-1922), the inventor of the telephone, based his invention on what Herman Von Helmholtz (1821-1894) discovered about waves.

3. Guglielmo Marconi (1874-1937), the inventor of the wireless telegraph, based his invention on what Heinrich Hertz (1857-1894) and James Clerk Maxwell (1831-1879) discovered about electromagnetism.

Today, humanity is increasingly dependent on science and technology to meet its material needs.

Most of the water we use for drinking has been scientifically treated and purified. We use electric appliances at home and in our offices. We use machines that simplify the tasks of daily living. Better clothing is available because science and technology have provided better fabrics and improved methods of textile manufacture. Technology has also made possible the development of better soaps and cleaners to clean our clothes, more nourishing food for our bodies, better materials for building homes, and more effective drugs to cure or prevent diseases.

Other far-reaching developments may accompany the advancement of technology. Examples are language-translation machines that will bring the goal of worldwide communication a step closer; increased success in the transplant of natural vital organs from one person’s body to another; and probably the most dramatic of them all, the establishment of a manned spacecraft on the moon. It is possible what within your lifetime, you may see the partial control of the weather; the complete elimination or control of viral and bacterial diseases; the correction of hereditary defects; and the laboratory creation of primitive forms of artificial life.

Soon many of you will receive computer-based instruction that permits a “conversation” between you and the computer programming, decision theory, and systems analysis more meaningful. We now live in a dynamic age of satellite-relayed television, electromechanical “brains”, guided missiles, and miracle drugs. Each of these far-reaching developments will affect our daily lives. A study of the products of science and a fuller understanding of the role they play in modern society is important.

Technology has helped improved our lives. Through technology we have better shelter and clothing, increased food production, and a higher standard of living. In the field of agriculture, technology has helped improved food production and preservation.

Technology can also have harmful effects. The outcome of technology should be considered and carefully studied to determine its effects on man and society. For instance, gases produced by cars and factories may pollute the air and produce harmful effects. Technology should be used with caution. It should be used to produced new products and develop new methods, which could help many people lead healthy lives. But the harmful effects of technology must be carefully weighed and prevented.

Things didn't always go so smooth.

• Henry Ford

Inventor of the first car, he originally started fives different businesses which all failed and let him broke. He later founded Ford motors.

• Bill Gates

Dropped out of Harvard, first business ended as a failure. Doesn’t seem like a road to success does it? Well now he’s worth $61 billion.

• R.H. Macy

Attempted to make seven businesses which all failed before opening Macy’s in New York. I guess eighth times a charm?

• Walt Disney

Fired from a newspaper because “He lacked imagination and had no good ideas,” and later failed at starting several businesses. His name now is known by basically everyone.

• Charles Schultz

Every comic strip he ever made denied by his school’s newspaper, and even denied by Disney himself! Didn’t look to good for future creator of the beloved Peanuts crew.

• Isaac Newton

Failed in school and then stuck in charge of his family’s farm. Failed at that, so his uncle took over and sent him off to Cambridge where he became the genius known today.

• Albert Einstein

Didn’t speak until he was four, didn’t read until he was seven, an later denied to Zurich Polytechnic School. Oh and his parents thought he was going to be disabled and antisocial.

• Elvis Presley

He wasn’t always the King. After one performance he was told “You ain’t going nowhere, son. You ought to go back to driving a truck.” I guess he showed him.

•Harland David Sanders

Better known as Colonel Sanders of KFC. Had his famous chicken recipe denied 1,009 times until a recipe accepted it.

• Thomas Edison

Told he was “too stupid to learn anything” and then fired from his first two jobs. Later failed 1,000 times to make a lightbulb until he finally got it right.

Many people claim that famous inventor Edison was the first to communicate with the death. He was also the first to invent a ghost machine. On October 1920, the Scientific American Magazine published an article titled "Edison building a ghost machine to communicate with the death. "

Edison And His Ghost Machine. Part 2

For many years, I have been wondering why Edison did not reveal any details about his ghost machine. Many people believe that he had gone crazy—he wanted to build a machine to talk to ghosts. When he was interview by the Scientific American Magazine, he told them that his machine would give him the power to communicate with the death. His machine had a turning valve that made a steam turbine for the spirits to come to us and to speak to us. After the interview Edison refused to talk about the machine. He told the Scientific American Magazine that one of his employees who was working on the ghost machine died, but if the machine worked, “he ought to be the first to use it”

There is no evidence that this ghost machine was built, yet given the fact that Edison was one of the greatest inventors of all time it is possible that he built the machine, but he destroyed it because he found out something he shouldn’t have or it never work. We can only wondered what it would be like to talk to death. To really find out what is waiting for us on the other side.

Edison Last words during the Interview

Edison believed that entities live forever and that death is simply the departure from our body—the departure of the spirit from our body. “I really believe that our personality survives,” Edison said. “If my personality really survives, my machine would be useful. That is why I am working on this machine. I am waiting for the results” Again, there’s no evidence that Edison’s ghost machine really work and is unclear whether his machine was real or a hoax. However, I seriously doubt that he wanted to attract some negative attention.

Well you can say they are getting smarter in term of Quantity and Quality. But where is the outcome of it. Where is next Bill Gates or Steve Jobs? Well don’t worry they are coming soon in this top arena of innovation. What i wanted to say is that, i really don’t care whether they are coming soon or not. But what i am really sure is that another Bill Gates will be coming from Americans too. This is America! Let me tell you in capital letter “THIS IS AMERICA”. This is America where an almost academically not so done well guy can gives some of the best inventions in human mankind. This kind of air is has been blowing since Thomas Edison and many more. This is America where someone came out of nowhere and amazed everyone.

I don’t say all the best will be coming out of America, I am simply saying that best of the best will still be coming out of America. I don’t care what type of political poison is flowing on the big river. There is someone and that someone is more than enough to maintain that level of achievement in the history of one nation successful civilization. Long live America. It’s good to have you. Love you from far far ………..EAST.

Many of us are taught to stay away from the occult. Some religions forbid the use of Ouija boards, witchcraft and ghost hunting. But religions can’t stop us from wondering: what’s on the other side?

Many believe that Edison spent most of his time building apparatus to see if it was possible for ghosts to communicate with the living. Edison was one of the greatest inventors of all time. He invented the electric light bulb, motion picture cameras and the phonograph. In October 1920 word got out that Mr. Edison had indeed built a ghost machine. Edison was interviewed by The American Magazine, and left everybody speechless when he said, “ I have been thinking for sometime of a machine which could be used to talk to ghosts”

GHOST OF A MACHINE

Did Edison really invent a ghost box to talk to ghosts? For many years, people have thought about the possibility that this ghost box really existed, but the device was never found. Did he really build one or not?

One article written by the Scientific American Magazine stated, “The machine which Edison is reported to be working on is still in the experimental stage”

However, since there’s no evidence that the ghost machine was ever built by Edison, we have to conclude that the tabloids back then are no different than the ones we have today; they sure love to make stuff up to sell more magazines.

It is very clear that Mr. Edison had an amazing idea. He was interested in the paranormal world. He never claimed that our souls pass on to another existence or dimension because he didn’t know anything about the subject. Not to mention, nobody knows for sure. But he did claim that it was possible to build a machine to get in touch with those who are no longer part of the living world. The machine would give people a better opportunity to communicate with the dead, and there would be no need to use dangerous Ouija boards or fake mediums and psychics.

It seems that Edison had a change to work on his ghost machine, but he was never able to go public with his new invention. The idea was very interesting, and since nobody knows what’s on the other side, such a device could answer a lot of questions, but first, we need a ghost to be willing to answer our questions.

Have you ever slept in on a weekend and woken up feeling like you had slept forever? Compared to some people throughout history, you hadn't even come close.

Take Charlemagne of the 9th-century Holy Roman Empire. Because of insomnia ridden nights, he was known to nap for 3 hours after his midday meal. French mathematician Abraham de Moivre was reported to have slept 20 hours a night (and day) as he neared his death in 1754. And sleep researcher Peretz Lavie reported on 19-th century women and adolescent girls who slept for days or months on end – there was even one who slept for a year.

Consider fiction’s legendary sleepyheads. Washington Irvings hero Rip Van Winkle imbibed a charmed drink and woke up 20 years later. He spent the remainder of his days as a makeshift historian, telling willing listeners what life was like 2 decades earlier. And who can forget Sleeping Beauty, who spent 100 years in an ageless, enchanted sleep, only to be awakened by her charming prince?

But if you’ve ever felt like you just don’t get enough sleep, you’re in for some competitive (and powerful) company. While running Great Britain, former Prime Minister, Winston Churchill who slept little, once chided a younger colleague who complained of fatigue, ” I have never been tired in my life.” Margaret Thatcher, another former Prime Minister, reportedly only slept 3 to 4 hours per night. It was said that President John F Kennedy worked in the Oval Office until the wee hours of the morning and then awoke just a few hours later at 7:30 a.m.

Short sleepers in history were at no loss for creativity, either. Inventor Thomas Edison required less than 4 hours sleep per night, often napping on his couch in his workroom only when he felt fatigued. He considered 8 hours of sleep ‘excessive’ and a symptom of weakness. Edison’s competitor, Yugoslavian electrical engineer Nikola Tesla, inventor of the wireless radio, scoffed at Edison’s sleep habits: Tesla reportedly slept only 2 hours each morning.

Fellow inventor and 15th century artist Leonardo da Vinci was said to have worked almost continuously by napping 15 minutes every 4 hours (a mere 1 1/2 hours per day) and not sleeping at all at night. Painter Salvador Dali was rumoured to have napped in a chair while holding a spoon over a tin plate. When he drifted off to sleep and dropped the spoon, the clatter would wake him, and he would feel completely refreshed.

For the majority of us, however we need at least 8 hours of sleep to maintain our energy and to be productive. To sleep is perchance to dream.

"Difficulties are either challenge or a handicap."

“Hell,” said Gian Carlo Menoti, “begins on the day when God grants us a clear vision of all that we might have achieved, of all the gifts which we have wasted, of all that we might have done which we did not do…”

Schott Hamilton would agree. Scott is the Olympian gold medal winner who earned the admiration of the world for his 1984 performance at Sarajevo. It was his talent, as well as his wholesome “boy-next-door” image, that captured our hearts; but, for Scott, it represented another kind of triumph as well.

When he was two years of age, Scott stopped growing, afflicted by a childhood disease that almost cost him his life. But Scott didn’t die, and his adopted parents encouraged his rehabilitation by teaching him skate. It was therapy for the little boy who was never quit as large as the rest of his classmates.

For Scott, his problem was not a handicap, but a challenge to be overcome, and overcome it he did. When individuals face challenges that can handicap them, they face an uphill fight, but Scott Hamilton for one did not give up.

THOMAS EDISON: another one who would have understood Scoot. From the age of twelve, Edison was afflicted with a severe hearing loss. Teachers urged his parents to take him out of classes. A “slow learner” was how educators classified him, but Edison turned his deafness into a creative tool that drowned out the distractions and allowed him to focus on what was of interest to him. Thomas Edison, the man labeled as a “slow learner” by teachers, gave our world more than a thousand inventions, including the incandescent globe and the phonograph. He did not give up.

HELEN KELLER: she went through life not only sightless, but deaf as well. In her day, individuals who bore the label “deaf and dumb” as she did, were usually shunted to institutions where they lived as animals in an existence that was sub human. Helen overcame her handicaps, though, and her indomitable spirit gave all humanity a legacy of courage. As the result of what she was able to conquer, thousands of individuals have refused to quit or crawl into the corner of despair. She, too, would have understood Scott Hamilton.

What is normal? And what is a handicap? And who sets the standard for normalcy, anyway? Is it being short or tall, thin or stout, a fast learner or a slow one? Is it I.Q.? Or your ability to change a flat tire? Or your ability to see which way the stock market is headed? Hasn’t God gifted each of us with abilities that can be explored to the depths? Aren’t the real handicaps lethargy, indifference, the inability to shut off TV set and pick up a book? The great handicaps do not belong to those who are born with challenges, but instead they limit the “normal people” who restrict their lives with mediocrity and boredom.

MOTIVATION, THE HEART OF SELF IMPROVEMENT.

Pain may sometimes be the reason why people change. Getting flunked grades make us realize that we need to study. Debts remind us of our inability to look for a source of income. Being humiliated gives us the ‘push’ to speak up and fight for ourselves to save our face from the next embarrassments. It may be a bitter experience, a friend’s tragic story, a great movie, or an inspiring book that will help us get up and get just the right amount of motivation we need in order to improve ourselves.

With the countless negativities the world brings about, how do we keep motivated? Try on the tips I prepared from A to Z…

A – Achieve your dreams. Avoid negative people, things and places. Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “the future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”

B – Believe in your self, and in what you can do.

C – Consider things on every angle and aspect. Motivation comes from determination. To be able to understand life, you should feel the sun from both sides.

D – Don’t give up and don’t give in. Thomas Edison failed once, twice, more than thrice before he came up with his invention and perfected the incandescent light bulb. Make motivation as your steering wheel.

E – Enjoy. Work as if you don’t need money. Dance as if nobody’s watching. Love as if you never cried. Learn as if you’ll live forever. Motivation takes place when people are happy.

F – Family and Friends – are life’s greatest ‘F’ treasures. Don’t loose sight of them.

G – Give more than what is enough. Where does motivation and self improvement take place at work? At home? At school? When you exert extra effort in doing things.

H – Hang on to your dreams. They may dangle in there for a moment, but these little stars will be your driving force.

I – Ignore those who try to destroy you. Don’t let other people to get the best of you. Stay out of toxic people – the kind of friends who hates to hear about your success.

J – Just be yourself. The key to success is to be yourself. And the key to failure is to try to please everyone.

K – keep trying no matter how hard life may seem. When a person is motivated, eventually he sees a harsh life finally clearing out, paving the way to self improvement.

L – Learn to love your self. Now isn’t that easy?

M – Make things happen. Motivation is when your dreams are put into work clothes.

N – Never lie, cheat or steal. Always play a fair game.

O – Open your eyes. People should learn the horse attitude and horse sense. They see things in 2 ways – how they want things to be, and how they should be.

P – Practice makes perfect. Practice is about motivation. It lets us learn repertoire and ways on how can we recover from our mistakes.

Q – Quitters never win. And winners never quit. So, choose your fate – are you going to be a quitter? Or a winner?

R – Ready yourself. Motivation is also about preparation. We must hear the little voice within us telling us to get started before others will get on their feet and try to push us around. Remember, it wasn’t raining when Noah build the ark.

S – Stop procrastinating.

T – Take control of your life. Discipline or self control jives synonymously with motivation. Both are key factors in self improvement.

U – Understand others. If you know very well how to talk, you should also learn how to listen. Yearn to understand first, and to be understood the second.

V – Visualize it. Motivation without vision is like a boat on a dry land.

W – Want it more than anything. Dreaming means believing. And to believe is something that is rooted out from the roots of motivation and self improvement.

X – X Factor is what will make you different from the others. When you are motivated, you tend to put on “extras” on your life like extra time for family, extra help at work, extra care for friends, and so on.

Y – You are unique. No one in this world looks, acts, or talks like you. Value your life and existence, because you’re just going to spend it once.

Z – Zero in on your dreams and go for it!!!
