Smoking is said to have been practiced around 5000 B.C., roughly the same time as when metallurgy, agriculture, ploughs, beer, and the wheel were developed. From its original use in religious rituals and ceremonies, people later smoked for recreational purposes. Today, tobacco has grown into a multi-billion dollar industry, with the U.S. alone churning out more than 400 thousand tons of the unprocessed plant.
