In the 30 day period beginning August 21, 2011 and ending September 20, 2011 Japan experienced 69 (sixty nine) earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 or greater. Although Japan has a history of earthquake activity this year the island nation has seen more than its share of the natural disasters. The country’s location relative to tectonic plate fault lines and shifting of the earth’s major plates could have something to do with this increased activity.

Japan is located right on the fault line between the western edge of the North American tectonic plate and the eastern edge of Eurasian tectonic plate. To make matters worse, it is also near where the two plates meet the Filipino plate and the eastern edge of the North American plate it sits on is actually a peninsula of the plate. Since this peninsula of the North American plate is relatively narrow, it means that any significant release of friction from the shared fault line with the Pacific plate will also be felt by Japan.

Image via Wikipedia

The added effect of the fault lines being in the ocean is that tsunamis are likely to occur in the event of significant release of pressure from the fault lines of the plates surrounding Japan. An example of this is the Fukushima earthquake and tsunami of March 2011 which produced tsunami waves that washed away complete towns and severely damaged a nuclear power plant. The cleanup of the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear incident will take years and remains a concern, not just of Japan, but most of the world.

The Fukushima earthquake was of magnitude 9.0 which is very rare and hopefully won’t repeat in our lifetime. However, with the continued activity, such as the earthquakes within the last month alone that have hit Japan one has to wonder.

If an earthquake strikes should you use your cell phone?

It’s a natural reaction during an emergency – such as earthquakes that hit Southern California or Japan (along with the tsunami). You quickly grab your cell phone and call home to make sure your loved ones are safe. Or, you frantically place a call to your friends to share the experience during the quake – the rocking and rolling, the aftershocks, etc.

‘SYSTEM OVERLOAD’

While that reaction may be natural, it can make a bad situation – busy signals and calls not getting through – even worse. During an emergency the sheer volume of calls can overload a cell phone carrier, making your cell so much dead weight. Sprint communications, for example, reported that during a Southern California earthquake they experienced an 800 percent spike in cell phone calls. The problem is compounded when people who can’t get through keep redialing, creating what cell phone companies call ‘system block’ or plain old ‘system overload.’

CONFLICTING INSTRUCTIONS

But even the cell phone companies can be confused as to what to do. Sprint, for example, cautioned against redialing your cell phone when you can’t get through to someone on the first try. But a statement by Verizon once recommended just the opposite, recommending that callers keep redialing until they can get through in the hope that as time goes by the volume of calls will diminish.

TIPS

Phone companies suggest a number of things callers can take to get call through.

Use text messaging – it takes up less bandwidth so calls have a better chance of getting through.

Some carriers, like Verizon and Sprint offer “push to talk” services. These services bypass cell phone towers, and operate from one point to another point so are less likely to experience problems during a quake. However, one limitation is that they work only when talking to someone within a few miles from where you’re calling.

If you have a smart phone – like Apple’s iphone – you can try emailing messages through the phone’s web browser. Email also uses less bandwidth.

Most experts agree that one of the wisest things you can do during an emergency, is NOT to use your cell phone – or land line for that matter – unless you absolutely have to. State officials at the California Office of Emergency Services even took the extraordinary step of urging people throughout the state to cut back telephone use – something to be considered anywhere an emergency strikes.

Yesterday many websites that offers live coverage of a seismic activity in the world first reported 8.4 earthquake in Libya, off the coast, but than most of them removed this earthquake from their maps.

Many people are now wondering what actually happened and why did they remove the seismic activity result from the majority of the websites.

While there is a war going on in Libya, something like this only adds to mystery surrounding US NATO military engagement in Northern Africa.

Some people are even suggesting that it may be a nuclear weapon that was activated which seismograph recorded as an earthquake.

American singer Lady Gaga created the design for series of bracelets with the purpose of raising funds for the tsunami-affected people from Japan.

Lady Gaga seems to be not only a very talented young singer who can make people all around the world get crazy with her songs but also seems to have a good heart.

In 2010 she raised over a half milion dolars for the people affected by the Haiti earthquake, donating the value of some tickets that she sold for her concerts. This time, she posted on twitter and urged everyone to help people in Japan. She asked her fans to buy those white bracelets that she designed herself so she can steal money for the devasted aria. Those could be bought beggining with 25 march and cost 5 dolars and it writes on each one of them ” We pray for Japan”, in english and japonese, including the symbol of a monster claw, a symbol that Lady Gaga likes very much.

1. Never apologize for pursuing what makes you happy. Even if you need to quit your job, transfer schools, or move across country, always do what you really want.

3. Never apologize for giving your best in a relationship that just didn’t work out.

4. Never apologize for being successful. Only haters want to keep you at their level.
5. Never apologize for crying. Wear waterproof mascara and express yourself.

6. Never apologize for ten pounds you need to lose. People who truly care about you will accept you as you are.

7. Never apologize for being frugal. Just because you save your money instead of blowing it on the latest fashion emergency doesn’t mean you’re cheap.

8. Don’t apologize for being a single Mom/Dad. Babies are a blessing.

15. Never apologize for wearing a weave or braids. You bought it so it’s yours.

16. Never apologize to your new friends about old friends. There’s a reason she’s been your girl from day one.

17. Never apologize for ordering dessert or more than one dessert.

18. Never apologize for dating outside your race. Just because you found Mr./Ms. Right across the color line doesn’t mean you don’t love your brothas.

19. Never apologize for demanding respect. You are to always be treated as a queen.

20. Never apologize for not knowing how to cook. Even if you can’t burn like Grandma you know how to order good take out. (Right!)

For the whole doomsday scenario, scientists have shown more exactly when eating event, estimating the impact in April of 2029 and even its place, the Pacific Ocean, 500 miles west of Santa Monica dd. Further calculations indicated that, although it is possible to bypass both the asteroid and Earth Month to date, would be an even greater threat, only seven years later, in 2036. Although this asteroid was discovered in 2004, information is not until recently has been published since its identification in space coincided with the tsunami disaster in Indonesia, and the scientific community considered sufficiently frightened mankind at that time for other grim news. Radius equal to about 270 meters and a weight of 2.1 x 10 million tons, Apophis is the most massive alien body will be placed so close to Earth in known history. There are voices which call for its destruction in space, but specialists do not encourage this idea because, they say, “the results of such actions are unpredictable and we even have the character to make matters worse.” Therefore, scientists rely for now on monitoring asteroid’s movement and careful identification of its rejection techniques.

Why has it become so important to keep yourself updated with the environmental problems of 2011? What are they and how much damage have they caused to our planet? Read this article to get more information...

Pollution
Environment pollution is the root cause of all other problems prevailing in nature. Release of high amounts of industrial gases in the air pollutes it to a high level. Air pollution is also one of the main reasons behind acid rain. These gases are highly poisonous which remains in the atmosphere permanently. The polluted air, when inhaled by human beings, gives rise to a wide range of respiratory system disorders and other health complications. Industrial waste, when disposed into oceans, poses danger to aquatic life. Apart from this, protecting marine species from oils spills of ships is also a subject of great concern of environmentalists. Thus, you can well conceive that an imbalance is created in the food chain, affecting the environment to a large extent.

Loss of Biodiversity
A large number of animal and bird species are on the verge of extinction. If you browse through the environmental issues of 2011, then you will come to know that protection of endangered species is a major concern. Whether they are found across deserts or forests, considerable steps are being taken by the government of respective countries for their protection. To name a few, they are Peruvian spider monkey, the Tasmanian devil, the scaly anteater, killer whales of Canada, the Jaguarundi, the Indian vulture, the Himalayan wolf, etc. Furthermore, the nature of protection depends upon the rules enacted and the classification provided by the ‘Endangered Species Act’, in the year 1973.

Ozone Depletion
The ‘Ozone hole’ in the Earth’s stratosphere, though diagnosed in the year 1970, tops the list of environmental problems of 2011. The polar regions have been affected much more than the other parts of the world. Destruction of ozone takes place by halogen compounds that are present to a large extent in chlorofluorocarbon (CFCs) compounds, halons and freons. These are notorious chemicals that cause gradual depletion of ozone layer. The ozone layer protects the earth from damaging ultraviolet rays in the range of 280 – 315 nm. UV light of this wavelength causes skin cancer like melanoma, basal and squamous cell carcinomas, cortical cataracts and overproduction of vitamin D.

Nuclear Catastrophe
The recent earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan has created considerable damage to nuclear reactors. Release of nuclear radiation had humongous effect on lives of human beings as well as marine species. Thus, protecting the population from dangerous consequences of radiation poisoning has become a serious environmental issue in the year 2011. Natural disasters causing nuclear catastrophes could be fatal to living beings as radiation causes cancer. The catastrophe in Japan is one such recent issue that has been included under the list of current environment issues.

Global Warming
Increase in temperature of the Earth is a consequence of global warming. This problem has been currently analyzed deeply and several measures have been implemented throughout the world to control elevation of atmospheric carbon dioxide. We are all aware of the fact that ice from polar regions has substantially melted due to rise of temperature. The temperature of Earth has been speculated to increase further in the near future if the measures are not strictly followed. Loss of biodiversity is also associated with global warming and extinction of species that are not capable of surviving under high temperature is inevitable. Planting more and more trees is a great solution for controlling global warming.

Apart from these, loss of natural resources, soil erosion, and destruction of coral reefs have also become an environmental issue. Now that you are aware of the environmental problems of 2011, you can make small efforts to protect our planet Earth. We should look into these problems individually and follow the rules given forth by the environmentalists to prevent further damage.

The crisis in Japan is a bad one. It may not strike you at first that it is going to have an impact on you too.

Call it globalization, call it the domino effect, call it whatever you want. But it is here and it is here to stay. In a way it is true that globalization does affect the whole world. A crisis in Saudi Arabia is likely to be felt in Sweden too. The world economy is no longer a collection of separate economies. All economies are now inter-linked, inter-connected and inter-dependent. There is no looking back.

Now Japan is a very important country in the international perspective. Until recently, Japan was the second-largest economy in the world. It is hard to imagine that a small country like Japan, a bunch of small islands, can have the second largest economy and can beat countries like India, Germany, South Africa, Russia and others.

The earthquakes and tsunamis have affected the country a lot. The worst problem remains the one at Fukushima. The entire plant had to be closed down due to radiation leaks which had reached the levels of Chernobyl.

It is important to understand that the Japanese economy relies on its abundant industries. It is a highly industrialized economy that supplies to both domestic and export markets. Now it is impossible to have a highly industrialized economy like Japan depending on conventional fossil fuel energy sources. It needs to look at more unconventional sources of energy which is cheap and is non-polluting. Nuclear power fits the bill.

It is tragic that the plant at Fukushima was hit. Fukushima was a big plant and it provided electricity to quite a large area of Japan. The entire plant, consisting of so many reactors had to just shut down because of excessive radiation leak.

As a result, many industries had to shut down so many units. Factories have been shut down either because there is no power or because the factories themselves have been destroyed in either earthquakes or tsunamis.

So how is it going to affect you?

1. Automobiles.

Planning to buy that Toyota Camry? Or a Nissan X-trail? Or any Japanese vehicle for that matter? You can book your car but be assured that you’ll get your car after a really long time. Did your Japanese car just break down? Chances are that it will remain that way for quite a while because spare parts may not be available in the market that easily for sometime. Factories in Japan are shut down due to power shortages. Your car and its parts are stuck in the long line. But you never know, it might be worth the wait.

2. Electronics

Want to buy that Sony Handycam? You might find that the prices of Japanese brands may just skyrocket because there are very few pieces left and it is unlikely that more units of that product will come from Japan for sometime to come. DVD Players, Television sets, Laptops, MP3 players, Handycams, Cellphones, Cameras, Speakers and other electronics from Japan won’t be available. Looks like you’ll have to adjust with a Samsung than a Sony.

3. Financial sector

Looking for a new loan? Boy, you’re in for a real tough time.

First of all, the world is reeling from the after-effects of a major recession. Banks are still very reluctant about giving loans to people. Japan’s financial sector was considered a really strong one. Now since the whole thing blew over, there is very little money left with Japan. To make matters worse, seismologists have predicted that the earthquakes in Japan are going to continue for a year. For a whole year, the Japanese economy will be trying to somehow repair the damages with the money it has. Japanese banks are no longer able to loan more money. There is very little money left in Japan. How can they possibly give more loans?

So you see, the crisis in Japan has affected you somewhere. Let us hope that the situation calms down in Japan and it comes back to normal.
