A wake-up call to the American pubic.

Well, Mitt Romney is at it again with his infantile mudslinging at Obama and his administration. This time it is over the shortfall of last month’s economic growth; only 69,000 jobs were added in May. Of course, that is still adding jobs, not hemorrhaging them at a breakneck pace as before. What continues to concern me even more is the apparent lack of even a modicum of long-term memory on the part of the American public. I can easily see why no one in the GOP has even acknowledged the abysmal pit of horror that Obama inherited from George (Train Wreck) Bush, Jr., since it certainly isn’t in their best interests for election purposes. But how we as citizens can continue to forget the near-miss catastrophe that was our economy before Obama took office simply flummoxes me! How can anyone fault a man who 1.) was even willing to be a Democratic nominee and take on the mudslide of fiscal irresponsibility and mind-numbing war debt that was flourishing under George Jr.’s administration, and 2.) actually managed to stop the total imminent collapse of the U.S. as a leading economic world power? Greece anyone? No? Do we actually believe that such near annihilation can be turned around in only four years? I can only assume that the memory of the American public is somewhat akin to mesh screening; flimsy, porous, and prone to damaging rust.

Meanwhile, I think it is fascinating that Romney has the nerve to attack Obama on a jobs creation platform since while Romney was governor of the illustrious Commonwealth of Massachusetts we had a jobs creation ranking (yes, I actually lived in the Commonwealth at that time) of 47 out of 50 by state. By the way, that isn’t a number I just pulled out of my shorts. This little factoid is according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. And just four years after he exited the premises Massachusetts shot up to 11 out of 50, according to the nonpartisan Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation. Hmmm. These numbers don’t seem to support the contention that Romney’s expertise as a businessman qualifies him to run a country. Perhaps he is planning on selling stock to get us through this crisis, like he did to get by in his “poor Boston University college days.” Selling stock, so he and his wife could both attend BU! At the same time! Without working! Are we hearing this America? Has anybody ever had the privilege of not working his or her backside to the bone trying to get through college, let alone adding a wife to the mix and attending a prestigious Ivy League university? It is obvious to everyone but him that he and his wife come from the disassociated stinking rich. They have never been in any real danger of losing anything, except maybe their cluelessness. Interestingly, Obama just recently admitted that he finally paid off his student loans just eight years ago. Me, I’m still paying, and I am thankful every day that our unemployment rate is only 8.2%. God, things could be so much worse.

This article is about how Obama's broken promises and failed policies prove Obama does not care about Americans.

Let us agree that a person who actually cares makes a positive contribution to your life. A friend hears of a job and calls you and gives you all the details so you can go apply. A spouse agrees to work extra hours in order for you to finish your education and improve your job opportunities. These people care.

There is no politician that is coming to your home with the perfect for you job under their arm. Making you weak and dependent on government is not caring for you.

The reality is that liberals have been tearing at your heart and soul for the majority of your life trying to convince you that government should be your second chance. With their art they get you to develop a bad attitude about life. This bad attitude makes you drop out of school, make children you cannot afford, join violent gangs, abuse alcohol and drugs, and spiral down to an existence of emotional turmoil and mental health hardship. They do this with their art ridiculing the foundations of society such as family, personal responsibility, education, and hard work.

We too are willing victims as long as we can be passive and emotionally blackmail people into taking care of us. However, when we get to a certain age we realize we squandered our potential and denied ourselves our romantic ideal.

If Obama cared he would realize the basic human function that gives joy and happiness from planning a dream and working to accomplish that dream. Obama only cares about feeding his narcissistic need to feed his own ego.

I believe it is appropriate after three and half years to evaluate the lack of progress of Obama. Jan 21 2009 the unemployment rate was 6 percent. It rose to 11 percent. It is now reported at 8.3 percent. The only reason the unemployment rate has gone down is because people have given up on looking for work.

In addition, Mr. Obama has stopped economic growth with his bad attitude towards the successful, his enormous spending, and his desire to raise taxes. Who wants to be successful when Obama wants to take the away the rewards of personal success?

I have said that one function of government is to administrate the departments of that government. Mr. Obama as chief executive officer of the American government has had “fast and furious”, “GAS splurging at Vegas, “Secret Service in Columbia”, “Department of Energy harassing American energy producers”, and many more scandals related to the departments he, Mr. Obama, is supposed to be administrating. Part of administration involves auditing for waste, fraud, and mismanagement.

Therefore, Mr. Obama has done everything wrong and it is costing the average American citizen. A person who cares makes better choices. These choices actually help people help themselves.

However, all we see from Obama is mismanagement, fraud, and waste. In addition, we see hatred and rancor from Obama towards anyone who disagrees with him.

Mr. Obama did the economy improve under your leadership? The answer is no. Therefore, you have not helped anyone.

The bigger question is “why are we being petty”. America needs mature and personally responsible people, who are self-reliant. People may tell me that I only say that because I do not understand how hard it is to find a job. I look at CareerBuilder and Monster.com almost every morning. Just because you do not want the job does not mean there are no jobs.

We need to care about ourselves. We need to be the solution to our challenges. Everyone blames politicians. Who lets politicians do what they did while in office. I believe that would be the apathetic, disinterested, and uninvolved citizen.

Now, I have a small fear that the independent voters’ narcissistic need to win will lead to another four years of Obama. However, you do not attack business people and the Christian church and then expect to win the presidency.

I am not going to say I understand how independent voters actually believe that Obama is a better choice for America. The following is what Obama with his own words and actions has proven:

1. Obama is not a leader in foreign relations.

2. Obama hates anyone who disagrees with him.

3. Obama uses bureaucracies to punish his political enemies.

4. Obama hates personal success.

5. Obama does not want anyone but liberals to have wealth.

6. Obama cannot keep his promises.

7. Obama likes to spend other people’s money.

8. Obama stops economic growth with negative criticism of business leaders, high spending, over regulation, and high taxes.

There are a variety of ways by which our employment crisis can be handled. Their pros and con are discussed. Some of these hold more promise than others.

Finding ways of handling unemployment crises have always been controversial. Some agree that austerity measures are the best, while others disagree. Some may argue that it takes both austerity and stimulation to make an economy flourish. What follows are some things that private sector and government can do to help the employment situation. Arguments pro and con are also discussed.

1. Reduce taxes – conservatives and the Tea Party argue that this is the way for our economy to grow again. As they see it, such an initiative will be good for businesses that are the creators of jobs. The down side of this is, that in the process there will have to be cuts and layoffs. As soon as a reduction of taxes is on the table, it is generally the social programs that will take the greatest hit. Do we want the least among us to suffer with policemen, firefighters, and teachers?

2. Raise taxes – liberals are quick to jump on the bandwagon concerning this issue in order to solve our financial woes. To date, many Democrats say that the rich should pay their fair share. It is generally floated that those that earn more than $1,000,000 per year should fall into this category. Others feel that one percent of all Americans should see such an increase in their taxes. Conservatives respond, not so fast, for if that was implemented it would be affecting small businesses that are the creators of jobs. Thus, there is gridlock for those advocating lowering and those that say to raise taxes.

3. Job sharing – according to some policy makers in the United States, job sharing has been successfully implemented in Germany. This is basically how it works. Two employees will split a job by working 30 hours each in a 40 hour week. Government will then chip in by paying each the extra 10 percent of their salary. In this way, a company can reduce its workforce, employees will continue to be employed while maintaining their skills, and instead of full government unemployment checks, government will pay less in the process. This arrangement has the potential to save billions and there should be no reason why it should not be embraced by conservatives and liberals alike.

4. Loans to entrepreneurs – there is no reason why private sector loans should be dismissed as playing a vital part. It is through these that “mom and pop businesses” strive. These entrepreneurs appear to be dwindling in American society. We hear that family farms for instance, are being gobbled up by big corporations. Still, small businesses around the nation employ the most employees and although they are not as diversified as they once were, they still play an important role in our daily lives. The problem is that when the economy sours as it is now, these loans dry up and there is no place to turn. We often greeted with the term, “banks are not lending.”

5. Subsidies – many subsidies come from government. We hear about subsidies to the “big oil” companies. Some wonder why, especially since they rake in billions in profits each year and their CEOs earn millions per year with hefty bonuses. Many conservatives argue that if you take these away you risk gas hikes at the pump and will lose jobs. As a result oil companies continue to enjoy these freebies. Corn was subsidized when there was a push for alternative energy through ethanol. Strange as this may seem, it impacted the cost of the food supply chain, for this grain is used by humans and to fatten farm animals.

6. Grants – there are private and government grants that support programs. Some of these are social programs, while others are in academia. Many of these last for a particular period of time and come with stipulations. Some drug companies may support cancer or AIDS research. Others like the Fulbright Scholarship Program support faculty and students while working abroad in foreign countries around the world. These initiatives make it possible for these individuals to obtain expert knowledge in various regions of the world. Such offerings play into the picture by providing temporary employment.

In this article I write about the respect for all people by Republicans and our compassion through wanting an economy that serves everyone.

It is apparent that the news media wants republicans to appear uptight, angry, and unsympathetic to the plight of members of the homosexual lifestyle. We all know that Obama and the liberal news walk in concert. Therefore, we can expect that Obama and the liberal news will continue to beat this homosexual marriage issue till the election.

It is not in our interest to let them set the conversation and debate. I say that our response should be that we respect all people. In addition, we say that if we offer a different point of view it is because we care and we want people to have the same quality of life we have been fortunate enough to have in our lives.

People always think disagreement means persecution and condemnation. We who believe in traditional values are trying to help people achieve a great personal life experience with our contribution to the conversation.

The reality is that everything carries the justice of God. Just because a person does not believe in God does not mean that Gods does not exist.

In addition, there are always going to be consequence to a person when he or she is out of the righteousness of God. An eternity in hell is the eternal destination to all who do not accept Christ as their Lord and Savior and do not follow the “voice of God”, i.e. the bible.

By telling you the expectation of God I am not telling you my self-created religion. I am telling you what the God smart and powerful enough to create a universe told his prophets to document in the Bible.

Now you may disagree with us about God, creation, and Salvation. Disagreeing with me is okay and acceptable. However, your disagreement does not disprove God or invalidate my belief system.

Furthermore, it must be noted that we-people of traditional values-are not motivated by hate and violence. We are motivated by concern. I do not want anyone to suffer an eternity in Hell.

Now, you may say keep your bias religion to yourself. I will abide by your request. It is not my job to harass people until they agree with me. I am only expected to make a good effort at delivering the evangelical message to a person.

Republicans do not show annoyance, anger, or signs of being upset when interviewed by the news media. Report that because conservatives care we want to get the American economy working again with low taxes, low regulation, and low government spending in order for there to be opportunities for everyone in order for them to have the life they want.

I believe we are being compassionate by wanting to help people avoid drug addiction, teen-age pregnancy, incarceration, unemployment, and other social stressors with employment opportunities and respect for individual freedoms. It is Obama who is being cruel with people for getting their hopes up and not following through with any real policy initiatives. All Obama said was that he agreed with the promoters of homosexual marriage agenda. Obama did not say he, as president, was going to work to guarantee homosexual marriage through passing legislation. Obama and his democrats when they were in charge of the presidency and congress did not initiate any “illegal immigration reforms”. It appears Obama and his kind just wants political support for saying they agree with people but not actually passing any laws.

Mr. Mitt Romney and Republicans want a healthy economy that serves everyone and respect for individual rights. It is Obama who through a bureaucracy has interfered with religious people’s faith by ordering Churches and religious groups to provide abortion and birth control to its members.

Now, we all know that Obama has been a miserable failure. The US is 7 trillion dollars more in debt thanks to Obama and unemployment has not improved. The lowering the of the unemployment rate because Americans have given up looking for work is not an improvement. This reality is a shameful embarrassment for Obama and the democrats.

There is your lack of compassion. Obama has burdened all of us with his wasteful spending and he has made it impossible to find gainful employment.

Therefore, Republicans learn the language of compassion through the positive and optimistic value of having a successful economy. I reiterate that when Republican, conservative, and traditional values person is questioned about homosexual marriage just state that because you care you want to share the philosophy that has led you to a great life experience. Then quickly reinforce the idea of caring by wanting to create and American economy that serves everyone.

Trade unions can be defined as union of personnel that look for, through communal negotiation with company to:

progress and provide job security

advance and look after the real salary of their members

provide a hall for improved working environment or conditions

Protect workforce against undue discharge and other issues relating to employment legislation

recommend a range of other work-related services

With specific professions, industries, trades, individual trade unions have previously been linked. Certain examples of trade unions which are still on the go comprise of those linked with flight attendants, teachers and lecturers, bakers, food and allied workers, communication workers and those linked to the transport and general workers. All these work for the welfare of the people and community as a whole.

Trade unions play varied roles but the two chief roles or functions of a trade union are to symbolize their associates and to better bargain with the company. Augmented bargaining and cooperation authority which is emerged from acting together as a group or a union is the basic notion behind a trade union.

“Unity is strength” is basically the statement for trade unions. The affiliation between employer/trade unions has always been one of disagreement. Nevertheless, in other cases or situations, unions and employers council have a positive productive bond. From the company’s point of view, unionization can have many advantages/pros, as well.

In helping a business undergo significant change the trade union can be a supportive partner. In between the employees and the business, unions are part of the communiqué progression. Also, rather than talking it out or discussing with all employees separately, bargaining with trade unions save time and cost. If employees know that their wellbeing is being confined by trade unions, their self-esteem and incentive may be enhanced.

There had been a major decline in union membership in the UK sometime back in 2008. Among the masses in the UK, only 28 percent of the people had been trade union’s members. The aforementioned percentage is from varied sectors whereas; in private sector the percentage is much lower than 28 percent even. In private sector less than one in six employees is the member of the union. Nonetheless, Unionization is much elevated in the public sector which is over 50 percent.

There are many reasons for the turn down in trade unions’ membership but most important are mentioned below.

There has been an elevated expansion in the number of small firms which don’t feel the need for the trade union. They don’t believe in recognizing the necessity of it. Fewer perceived need for communal bartering due to an enhanced employee participation in the administrative center. A downfall in service in manufacturing is seen where union membership stands out as it plays a pretty vital role. Also, boost in service in the service sector where unions are less well recognized. Lastly, noteworthy expansion in lithe working places which may be temporary, part-time or seasonal. At these places employees require less need for union security.

Contacting a trade union in your country wil help you to understand more about the unemployment benefits for 2012 (Danish agents say dagpenge 2012). Good luck!

200,000 Americans to experience a cut from unemployment benefits.

News from a reliable source indicated unemployment benefits for about 200,000 workers would be cut this week. Half of the expected affected people are workers in California.

The reason for the benefit cut according to CBS is due to terms and conditions of the benefit extension agreement in Congress. The benefits would be cut off if the unemployment rates fall below a certain threshold.

Speaking to NBC, Loree Levy of the California Employment Development Department said she was pleased with the news because she believed it was an indication of an improvement in economy.

In order for a state to be qualified for the extended benefits, it must prove its unemployment rate is at least 10% higher than it was in at least one of the past three years.

Other states losing their benefits this week include North Carolina, Florida, Illinois, Colorado, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Texas.

Earlier this year, 19 other states lost their eligibility. Authorities say other seven states will lose theirs by September of this year making a total of 34 states facing the reduced federal assistance to the long-term unemployed.

After having graduated from university I thought life was going to be a lot of fun because then I was thinking about how easy was going to be to get an easy job, but it hasn't. I'll try to tell you the whole story and I would like you to give me feedback. I apologize if you find many mistakes in my writing. My native language is not English, it's Spanish.

When I was in high school I was a very good student who pondered about his future with optimism. I used to live with my father in a small town that it is located in what I am going to call here the western planes of Colombia (I don’t know if the bloody translation is valid, but I don’t care, I just want you to get the picture), and for me life at that time had a better colour though once in a while we experienced some difficult situations that turned it gray. However, everything seemed to be going by the right way and my dad and mom seemed to be expecting lots from me. I had been accepted in the best public university in my country and people said I was going to become an excellent professional that one day would become quite an important person. Then I think I made the first mistake because although I had a lot of talent for many things, I decided to study languages just because I felt it was what I liked the most. What I didn’t understand at that time and I didn’t foresee as part of my professional future was that my only option was going to be teaching verb to be (English is just a name right here) for little money and with terrible contracts that expire every single term.

First of all, when I graduated I decided to get back to the western planes to fulfill my brilliant future, but it didn’t turn that way. I had an interview with an Australian lady who had been living in Colombia most of her life and I thought I had got the right job with a decent salary, but it seems to be I was totally wrong. First of all I had to work very long hours and when I mean long hours is because I had to be teaching classes since 6 20 am until 10 pm in the evening. Money was not enough, I was living with my girlfriend and her daughter, and I lost six kilos in less than three months. I fought hard for my rights in that place because according to Colombian law, full time means eight hours not 14 and that was nearly what I was working every single day except Saturdays, when I had only 4 hours of classes and sometimes some hateful reunions that were extended until 3 in the afternoon, and of course Sundays that were my only free days. I tried to find a better job in that location, but it was being really difficult until I found some news on the local newspaper related to some contracts on local public schools.

Public schools in Colombia are no longer public, and most of them don’t even have the necessary amount of teachers to fulfill the needs and requirements of the population. The hiring process was being made by a religious organisation known as the Pastoral Social, and the only requirement was to have the degree of “licenciado” (Spanish for a B.A.). The job interview was in charge of a priest though I have to confess this guy was very kind and they offered me a fair salary for the amount of hours I was going to work at a place where kids really needed me. I was appointed to teach “Verb to be” (Saying English would sound too pretentious for what we do here) at a school called Catumare in one of the most popular areas of Villavicencio. I had to work from 6 am in the morning (Yes, we started classes at this very early time) until 12 20; which I considered fantastic because that gave me the chance of having lunch at home. I can’t say much about this job because for the first time in my life I had nice fair bosses who didn’t give me many hard times, but God teaching kids can be awful and stressful, and if they think they don’t have a future, which I have to confess it’s true, it’s even worse. English, they can’t even pronounce that bloody word they don’t care for what you do in class. They behave like monkeys in the jungle who would like to be swinging from a branch to another one.

I addition to that, I had many bloody problems with my girlfriend due to my flirting with a local bitch, and when I recovered my good judgement, I convinced her to quit her job and we decided to come back to our beloved Bogotá. I promised many fucking things, like “whatever I did, I didn’t mean it, I just want us to start all over again, this time from zero and with no mistakes ” (Sounds like a popular song, isn´t it?), but it was not that easy. I felt reluctant to keep on working on colegios. “I don’t wanna be involved in those bloody institutions anymore”, so I decided to get back to Bogotá, jobless and with no wishes of coming back to teach in schools, which are basically the main places where people with teaching degrees and experience are hired. This was just another mistake in my long list of crashing stupidities I have made because I was unemployed for a long time and I had to take some classes where there were some horrible women who decided to accuse me of things I have never done just because they were not able to articulate even a word effectively. Life seemed to be black at that time and I was not able to get a job for a while, when suddenly I got a call from a place called “Foundation Teachers” and they decided to engage me in training for what they called Special Program and Saturday Program. Long training the one I had to bear there, with no payment, for more than a month and I even was in charge of a course and had to deliver grades when I was not sure of how you had to follow the whole procedure. However, I had to confess I felt life was smiling to me again and I was really positive about what it was going to come in the near future.

After Christmas Holidays that were rather long I started working there and it was not such a hell of a bad thing except for the supervisor who was always criticizing everything I did and the very long hours that I had to work on Saturdays. However, time just passed by and I spent a whole year working there. Actually It was not such a bad thing…but my fucking bad luck came again, I´ll tell you in the future what else happened.

Discrimination in interviews etc.

Yes another youth unemployment article, but this time we are going to look at what can stop young people getting a job.

Piercings
Many employers don’t like piercings other than the traditional ear piercings. So that means if a young person has nose, lip or stretched ear piercings then they’d better remove them if they want the job.

Tattoos
Again many employers dislike tats especially if its in a noticeable place ie. forearm, neck etc. Even more so if its something that can be deemed offensive. If a young person is unemployed, with a tattoo they can pretty much kiss a job goodbye.

Hair colour
Many young people love to experiment with wild and wacky hair colours like pink, blue, green and purple but this can have a negative effect on a possible employer as it can look intimidating or just too wild. Employers tend not to allow it.

Now there are a number of other factors that can stop a young person from obtaining employment but why should these three things matter? They are forms of self expression. Why can’t we express ourselves the way we want to? If you ask me its pure discrimination. Basing whether or not a youth can have a job based on hair colour?

Geez what is the world coming too?!

Summary:

Unemployment of youth may be a Problem but Population, being a human-resource, may not. Proposed model like Cottage-industry, every unproductive youth is compelled to establish a production system. Government will provide raw material, technical and financial support and purchase finished products and market inland or abroad like China and Japan. Model is long term continuous GDP gainer at a huge.

Keywords:

China, Cottage-industry, Economics, Financial support, Finished products, GDP, How to Human-resource, Model, Nation, Population, Raw material, Technical support, Unemployment, Unproductive youth.

The population was never be problem nor will be, but is a human resource of a nation. Real problem to break development of a country is unemployment of youth. A model is proposed to overcome the problem. Kutir Udhyog was almost similar model but could not meet out expected results as the same was cooperative societies. A policy can be laid out to force each and every unproductive youth to establish a system of production. The government to provide him raw material on subsidized or reasonably low cost, technical assistance and financial support to the youth in establishing set up and to purchase the finished product from same venue and market it inland or in abroad like China and Japan. It is a long term model to gain continuous GDP of the country at a huge.

Population is not a problem:

When we discuss regarding burning problems and issues of a country, it is told that population is one of the most burning issues before the nation. But the statement cannot be recognized as an intelligent comment. The population was never be problem nor will be. It is the base of development of a nation. Many countries which have low dense population are not developed and the same that have dense population with better management are being counted as developed countries today. Many countries are there in the world, that are full of natural resources are not counted as developed countries and the few others having high population, are not undeveloped countries.

Population is a human resource of a nation:

The population is the human resource which is most demanding resource of a nation for its development. There is not a machine or any other type of resource anywhere that can replace the resource. A country cannot be supposed to develop if it is lacking human resource. It can be suggest that the population of a country is not population but unemployment of population.

Real problem is unemployment of youth:

It is said that high density of population creates a problem of unemployed youth. Once again, The comment is not agreed, If a country has no sufficient number of administrator, teachers, research workers, doctors, engineers, lawyers, judges, officers, technicians, clerks, peons, police forces and military forces etc., the same country has no right to complain unemployment of youth. If most of the population is on the road in searching of employment and the departments are in need of unfilled positions to be filled, the comment that high density of population creates a problem of unemployed youth is nothing other than a wrong explanation and interpretation of a situation (not a problem). If it is analyzed, what the problem is? The problem is not a population but unemployment of youth. Without employment the population is unproductive and looked like a pest on the country.

Proposed model to overcome the problem:

Making unproductive youth a productive one is a primary requirement of a developing country. An action plan can be suggest to such countries. The government should take hard action plan to make each every youth productive. A policy can be laid out to force each and every unproductive youth to establish a system of production (in other words earning) from a product of his choice. If he is provided an option to choose an item to produce as per his choice, quantity and quality of finished product will possibly be higher. In case the youth has no technical capacities or financial resources to establish his set up, he may be supported by the government. It should be binding upon the government to provide him raw material on subsidized or reasonably low cost, technical assistance and financial support to the youth in establishing set up. A subsidy should be provided on financial support whereas, but technical assistance should always be available free of cost to the youth. The government has also to take responsibilities to make raw material available at the door of the establishment and to purchase finish product from the same venue. Thus productive hours will be enhanced, and the youth will concentrate on quality and quantity of the finished product.

Scope of the model:

This is a proposed model for increasing productivity of unproductive youth of the nation. They will be directly associated with the GDP of the nation. The model is not impossible to implement. Almost similar model of employment named cottage industry was proposed at the time of freedom movement in India. The best results of cottage industry could not be met out due to the reason that the model was based on cooperative societies. These societies were responsible to manage raw material, financial and technical support and marketing of finished product. In that model, policies and managing skills in various societies were varied and block the way of success on overall growth basis.

Almost similar model is being implemented in various countries at present. They are providing facilities at the door of the established set up and purchase the finished product from the same venue. The government will acquire interest on loans, taxes (at low rate but in huge amount because of high production) on production and duties on export (at low rate but in huge amount because of high production). Low rate of taxes and duties, the cost of finished product will remain under control.

As the quality of the finished product is not certified, the government can sale out the finished products inland or abroad on low costs without giving any guarantee or warrantee. By operating a model like this, a country having highest population has no problem because of high population.

It is a long term model to gain continuous GDP of the country at a huge.

The jobless rate has bounced around a great deal – when was it the worst/best?

The United States unemployment rate is like the weather. Everyone wants to know if it is hot or cold, up or down and whether it foretells bad times or good times. It’s become such a rabid fascination that the rate, which at one time people rarely thought about or if they did only on a monthly or quarterly basis, is now the subject of weekly news reports and prognostications by pundits over the state of the economy. It’s also used as a political bellwether – one candidate or another’s future dependent on if the unemployment numbers are trending upwards or downwards.

But, what should we make of a given week or month’s unemployment statistics (put out by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics)? Let’s look at the unemployment rate in the U.S. over the past century.

Great Depression/War Set Records

Currently, in May of 2012, the national unemployment rate is hovering between 8.1 and 8.4 percent. How does that compare to the very worst (highest) unemployment rate? That distinction, as you might expect, came during the depths of the Great Depression. In 1932, the rate was 23.6 percent. The following year, 1933, was not much better at 21.7 percent. The rate did not drop below double digits for several years thereafter when in 1942 it dropped to 4.7 percent – the first full year the U.S. was engaged in World War II. And, in the following war years the rate remained low. In 1944 it dropped to 1.2 percent the lowest it has ever been.

Immediately following the war, as more G.I.s came home, the unemployment rate began to rise. In 1946 it jumped to 3.9 percent. By 1950 it had climbed to 5.3 percent before dropping in 1952 to 3.0 percent – perhaps because the country was engaged in the Korean War. Following that conflict, the rate began to rise again and by 1958 it was at 6.8 percent.

For the next two or three decades the unemployment rate bounced between five and seven percent. When a recession hit the country in the early 1990s, the rate started to climb again – going as high as 6.9 percent in 1993. After that it dipped to the mid 4.0 to 4.7 percent range before another recession in the early 2000s jumped the rate again to 6 percent.

The Great Recession – as the period from 2009 to current times is often referred – has seen the unemployment rate go to 9.3 percent, and 9.6 percent in 2009 and 2010, respectively.

Clearly unemployment rates follow economic conditions. Sadly, it also shows that during the most critical times – such as during war – the rate drops dramatically.

For those seeking work, no time period is good until work is obtained.
