The British tried to establish settlements on Roanoke Island in 1585, but did not last long. In 1607, the first English settlement to survive standing in Jamestown, Virginia. This settlement was founded by John Smith, John Rolfe, and other British people who are interested in wealth and adventure. Colony in Virginia nearly failed to survive because of disease and starvation, but succeeded because the planting of tobacco.

Banneker’s argument displayed key factors of persuasion and showed Banneker possessed much knowledge for being a black man. He mentioned the rights he should receive compared to those of whites. Banneker compared the society then to the Declaration of Independence and mentioned liberties whites have, but the Africans do not. Mentioning God and how we are all from the same flesh presented a reasonable argument to granting liberties to blacks. Most African Americans could not write, but he demonstrated that Banneker had a firm grip on writing with his use of complex words and meanings.
