Confused about what to do in college? How to figure out the right degree or the right combination of degrees to take in college? This article might help start the thinking process.

As we graduate from high-school, we are preparing ourselves to meet the challenges of the world. Some of us are ambitious to go into science and technology, while others have ambitions of running their own business. So, how do we determine which is the right degree for us?

Our brain is made up of two sides: Right Brain and Left Brain. The Right side is random, intuitive, holistic, synthesizing and subjective. The Left side is logical, sequential, rational, analytical and objective. Both sides of the brain are important to us. Using both sides of the brain yields optimum output as we are making informed decisions and observations of the world around us.

Therefore, the right university degree/s should involve both sides of the brain. For example, if you are taking Bachelor of Business Administration, then take a minor in Mathematics or Statistics; or take a master’s degree in Statistics. Similarly, if you are doing Bachelor of Engineering, take minors in Management or Communication. You get the picture. The reason for this amalgamation of different subjects is because the curriculum within these disciplines requires the application of both sides of the brain.

Now the argument could be that each degree on its own includes a certain level of logical and intuitive cognitive processing. Thus, another smaller degree in another discipline is not required. However, the cognitive balance provided by one degree is tipped in favor of one side of the brain; soft sciences towards the Right side and Science degrees to the Left side. While this may be convenient, it may pose challenges in the future. For example, as important it is to make logical derivations of a problem, right communication strategies could help in effective and efficient delivery of an idea or theory. The core idea is to make use of both sides of the brain when looking at things and obtaining a degree/s that does this is a crucial characteristic of the right university degree.

Another argument could be that courses under the soft sciences can be learned by practice. Why should I go to the university and take Communication or Management, for instance, as part of my major? True story. It could absolutely be learned by handling tricky situations and socializing. But a degree from a university speeds up this process and helps you to socialize effectively and reduces the amount of bad eggs you encounter.

I hope this alleviates the problem a little. Sure, the ultimate combination of degrees depends entirely on your interests and passion. But, it is ideal and beneficial if you chose a combination that made you think logically and intuitively. You will be an asset to any institution you decide to work for. Good luck in your endeavors.

The Economist has recognized the importance and role increasingly important role they are playing the online MBA , creating a sub-classification of the best distance MBA . And, whatever they say its detractors, the possibility of obtaining this board quoted without leaving your desk, combining vocational training with the family, is certainly something very attractive.

This program, ranked by The Economist as “excellent”, is taught for a decade and is structured as follows: students have three cycles of two-week classroom course at the beginning, middle and end, and in between there are two rounds of six months away from each. The program starts and ends with classes and meetings, and half considered a two-week stay. Another he describes as “excellent” is the online University of India, located in the second. Then comes the Online MBA in IT University of Management , although this program has to settle for a “good”.

The methodology used by the Economist operates as follows. The school highest score in each category, in this case IE Business School, receiving a score of 100% and the other schools are evaluated based on this rating. Those that manage more than 95% are rated as excellent, programs that achieve between 75% and 95% are classified as “good”, those between 50% and 74% are “average” and those that remain below 50% are considered deficient. The study by The Economist classifies programs according to three categories are given equal weighting.
The first concerns the content of the program and measures such things as the relationship between the number of teachers and the number of students, the percentage of teachers with doctoral students assessment of faculty do and they do the program. The second category is related to the quality of peers and measures the percentage of students completing the program, work experience and appreciation of the cultural level. Finally, the study considers aspects that are directly related to Distance learning MBA, which takes into account the sense of connection to school and value for money as the students.

Programs in business administration are valued in executive positions because through them the person improves an organization’s strategic vision and managerial skills in different areas of the company, explains the director of the MBA program at the Online Education.
For more information about this study please click here MBA .

My first year at university; what I expected, and what I got.

In the beginning…

I’m going to start my story before university, back when I was filling out UCAS forms. I was stuck. I wanted to act, but I also wanted a job after I got my degree. I wanted to apply to drama and psychology courses, so that’s what I did. Writing my personal statement was an interesting experience. It was as if I had dissasociative identity disorder, as I was trying to gage my statement so that it was clear I wanted to do psychology, but also clear that I wanted to do drama. Eventually I was offered places at York for writing, directing and performing, York for psychology, and Sheffield for Psychology. I accepted my place at Sheffield after much deliberation, deciding that it would be better to do Pscyhology, as to be a Clinical Psychologist, I need a degree, whereas I don’t to act.

The first day of Uni…

I arrived at Stephenson Hall on Oakholme Road. My brother and my mum started to unpack whilst I went on a hunt to find my room. I walked past it twice before realising that it was my room, and not just a store cupboard. It was next to another girl’s room – we had a mini corridor to ourselves. Through two sets of doors was a big corridor full of activity as new students unpacked and met each other. I heard the girl next door whining about forgetting test tubes (for shots) and I thought to myself ‘Oh God, I am not going to like this girl’ — I now live with her! How wrong I was.

The first semester…

I quickly formed a friendship group based on location, mostly. It included Becky (the girl with the test tubes), Nancy (a pint-sized giggler), Helen (a private-schooled party animal), Jon (a shy opinionated guy), Joe (a circus enthusiast) and Richard (a mumbling scouser). We all thought Nancy and Joe would hook up, because they kept hanging out and drinking tea. Nancy was appaled at the idea. We akwardly got to know one another, and often hung out in the evenings at the weekend. We quickly started talking about living together. There was a big drama because the girls were originally going to live together, but then the boys said they wanted to live with us. I really didn’t want to do this, but I was overruled. Christmas came, and another drama happened. I discovered that the girls I thought were my friends had gone to London without me for a trip. I felt so betrayed and friendless. That first semster was one of the hardest few months I’ve had in my short 20 years. I was not looking forward to going back.

Semester Two…

Despite my reservations, I quickly fell back into the university routine, aware of what my friends had done to me, but also willing to overlook it so that I still had friends. We began looking for the dreaded seven bedroom house, and quickly found one that everybody seemed to like. Thankfully, it was offered to another group of students. I had the idea of looking for a three bed and a four bed house next to each other — we were in luck! I got a call saying that there were two houses on Spooner Road suitable. We looked at them and loved them. That’s where we call home. I live with the other three girls, and the guys live two doors down from us. My perfect scenario. Things seemed to be going well!

That is, until I got some results back from Christmas examinations. Oh crap! I got 43. Barely scraped a pass. I’m an A* student, so this was pretty devastating for me. Moral of the story here kids — REVISE FROM THE FIRST YEAR! I’ve learned my lesson now, and currently average 78%, a 1st Class grade. Phew!

The second semester was blisfully uneventful. I had a house for next year, great friends and a really interesting course. All I had to worry about was exams! And worry I did. After my first results I was desperate to do better. I studied so hard, and although I probably could have done more, I felt that I was doing enough to get a good grade and still relax.

I was pretty much correct, as I achieved high 2:2s and 2:1s, and as these grades are only for passing the year and don’t count towards my degree, I was happy enough.

One lesson that I’ve taken from my first year is that I am at univeristy for studying, and although going out is great and I still do it weekly, we are expected to take initative and do some work as well to get good grades. Although a good lesson, it’s not the most important…

IT DOES GET BETTER! That is what I learned. I was struggling so much to enjoy myself in the first term, but by the end of the first year I was so happy to be at uni, with friends, independence and knowledge!

Yes children’ education and safety is my utmost drive because I am also a concerned documented French Alien citizen working overtime to protect any and all children… Again if you think my work is worth to read please join the Cosmic Code private website, become a VIP level 3 and get much more of my highly spiritual, educational work.

Two child abuse cases at Miramonte Elementary School? Do you have a remote idea of how many children were abused physically, mentally or sexually not only by such bastards but by Clergy men over the centuries? With the only difference of course that NONE of the highly placed clergy men were ever prosecuted of course! I can only hope exposing the universal ignorance will help the tax payers, responsible parents and teachers alike to help me fix a dismantlement educational system. When you think the Law Enforcement Agency, the secret services, FBI/CIA down to the public servants or the cops themselves omit the Universal Laws it is not a surprise to experience such a chaotic unruly world…

Continued: The school will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday to “take a break,” the Los Angeles Unified School system said. When classes resume Thursday, a new staff and social workers will be at hand to receive them, said Los Angeles School District Superintendent John Deasy. ”I can’t have anymore surprises at Miramonte,” Deasy told an auditorium packed with parents Monday night. “And if there are more, then we’ll have to deal with that.”

DT Rebuttal: But Mr. Deasy how can you and all the other School District Superintendents, the teachers, the staff, social workers and the parents of all the innocent children at Miramonte (and all others public schools, colleges and Universities in the US) can not have anymore surprises when all of you are part of the 99.09% of unconscious human beings unaware or unwilling to use Astropsychology?

The fact is when the born Plutonic teachers or priests are allowed to get close to your children you can be sure more of such disgusting surprises are on the way…The current educational system is totally unfitted to investigate and hire only committed souls willing to educate your children. Instead your colossal ignorance is opening the door to sick individuals overwhelmed with predatory sexual urge Plutonic UCI or “Unique Celestial Identity”

Super Bowl is Now Over…

Updated – Super Bowl XLVI and Mark Zuckerberg

Once more, how in the name of God can you and all the other School District Superintendents, the teachers, the staff, social workers and the parents of all the innocent children at Miramonte (and all others public schools, colleges and Universities in the US) expect no more surprises when all of you are part of the 99.09% of unconscious human beings unaware or unwilling to use Astropsychology?

Continued: Everyone from current custodians to teachers at Miramonte will be removed, he said. Those staffers who are not being fired are expected, after undergoing special training, to resume work at another location, he said. Staffers and students will be questioned as part of the ongoing criminal investigation. Parents will also be given the option of transferring their children to one of four elementary schools in the area.

DT Rebuttal: How smart of a decision this is for Mr. John Deasy? Totally insane, ridiculous reflecting the inefficiency of the School Districts he and so many “educated” morons supervise. Indeed so many good teachers were “removed” because that is all the excuses and the only way all Superintendent responsible for education had to do to keep their position and paychecks coming. Again your tax dollars at work America and you wonder why 85% of the kids drop out and end up criminals or drug/alcohol users?

And what type of training is he talking about? counseling the teachers? This is pure insanity at work knowing how difficult it is to get rid of the wrong grass messing up your beautiful yard. And if you think questioning teachers will stop anyone of them born with the wrong stars to control the Plutonic pull? Now changing schools if the worse thing any uneducated parents can do because Miramonte will become the safest place for any kids to be, at least for a while. Do you actually think a different school will not host any sexual predators? The beasts are everywhere and no schools is safe until Astropsychology become part of the curriculum period! This tells you when an unconscious Superintendent is himself powerless to a situation the solutions are not only ridiculous but laughable for someone who thinks the way I do.

Continued: “The actions we are taking are not a condemnation of the entire staff,” he said. But it wasn’t enough to appease outraged parents, who are demanding additional safeguards for the students. ”We’re saying enough is enough,” community leader Morris Grifton said at a demonstration Monday. “We want cameras in the classrooms, in the hallways and around the school.”

Did you see this Mom?

DT Rebuttal: No turning schools into jails where every kids and teachers’ moves are supervised is for criminals and not the children Mr. Grifton. Meantime what other options such another unconscious man has? This will cost the tax payers billions of dollars and infringe “privacy” some people will say and I do agree with this. However the money should be used to fix the problem at the core and not superficially because a sexual predator or a Plutonic soul is very smart. If the crooks can deal drugs, kill each others and control the outside from a jail loaded with cameras the predators will find a way to get your kids too. Education and recognition of what a Plutonic soul is all about through his/her natal UCI or “Unique Celestial Identity” is the cheapest, safest and utmost accurate way to deal with this problem. Traditionally educated PhD’s will never detect the predatory hidden instinct in any human because all human are adaptable. The entire educational system is faulty and as we move into the new Scorpius Dragon, criminals, cops and security system alike are battling each others physically and not spiritually which is the only way to recognize the born beasts.

Continued: Monday night, about 100 parents fumed outside the South Region High School No. 2 auditorium, unable to get in to the superintendent’s meeting because it was over capacity. ”The school authorities should have planned this meeting correctly to allow everyone in,” said one parent, Gustavo Morales. “If there’s not enough room in the auditorium, then they should have at least had it in the football field.” The arrests of both teachers, accused of lewd acts with children in their classrooms, came last week.

I graduated from Miramonte Elementary School!

DT Rebuttal: How can the School authorities responsible for your kids’ education make such a judgmental error? and you expect them to do a better job with the brain of your children? This tells you how empty the mind of those trusted educators really are…I just can not wait to have my own Astropsychology so you can trust my students and I to teach the teachers of the future on the reality of the Cosmic Code to keep the sexual predators away from your children.

In a world where leaders assign themselves to religious archaic convictions, or prioritize entertainments ,sports and trust its infantile scientific community only extreme stupidity can plague the rest of humanity.

Dr. Turi

Continued: The arrests of both teachers, accused of lewd acts with children in their classrooms, came last week. Mark Berndt, 61, was arrested and accused of taking bondage photos of more than two dozen students in his classroom, including some with suspected semen-filled spoons at their mouths. On Friday, a second teacher — 49-year-old Martin Bernard Springer — was arrested for allegedly fondling two young girls in the classroom. Parent Bessy Garcia, the mother of two children who were among Berndt’s alleged victims, spoke of betrayal. ”He wasn’t only a teacher. He was our personal friend,” she said. “He tricked us. We thought he was the best person in the world.”

DT Rebuttal: The fact is those two beasts, like any convicted sexual predators currently rotting in jail knew exactly what type of job offers such an easy option to get close to children. And if a damned priest, a man of God can mess with your child imagine a school teacher? These people have only one goal in mind and that is your child and if the perpetrator UCI is DUAL then you will be easily fooled. Blame it all on the humongous ignorance and on the religious induced fears stopping human to heed God’ signs. Blame it all on fears of the ridicule, blame it all on the “educated” scientific egotistical crowd unwilling to take a chance and honor the word science outside of the box. Meantime your children are at risk each time you send them to institutions run by well read academics morons trying to educate your children.

And if science could / would acknowledge, use or predict behavior within the UCI or “Unique Celestial Identity” software system I developed, might they (our politicians, the police, education authorities and humanity at large) not also find a way to control their mental shortcoming?

Dr. Turi

Continued: She described how she and her two children were having trouble sleeping, eating and functioning as they wrestled with last week’s disclosures. ”It’s been like hell,” said another parent, Claudia Rivera. “We’re just trying to get some answers.” The investigation into Berndt began in October 2010, when a drugstore photo technician told police he found images of blindfolded children in a processing order.

After an initial investigation, investigators notified school authorities, who removed Berndt from his classroom in January 2011. On Tuesday, the school board will meet to determine the fate of the second teacher, Springer. The developments come as the school district is dealing with a third case of alleged lewd behavior — this time involving a janitor at another school.

DT Rebuttal: Well Mrs Bessy Garcia the reality is you will keep trying for the answers educators does not have and will never uncover and if you are a church goer do not expect any priests to offer you the answers either. God has enslaved human to uncover the reasons that offers answers to the questions on how evil can control each one of his children. And it is only by building Cosmic Consciousness that those answers will become as clear as holly water, the question is are you ready to acknowledge if you child is prone to attract a sexual predators or will he become a sexual predator himself? Armed with those celestial answers God which is also evil in disguise will allow you and your child to control the horrific pull of his natal stars and control, refute, eliminate the potential evil lurking in his/her spirit.

Continued: On Sunday, the mother of a student at Germain Elementary School reported “inappropriate contact” between the custodian and her child, a Los Angeles Police Department statement said. The man, Paul Adame, was arrested and charged with a felony. He has been released on $100,000 bail.

Where are the kids?

DT Rebuttal: Yes and many more priests will also be caught messing up with your kids but if they are important enough the Diocese will pull some strings and the sexual predator will escape justice…

Continued: Back at Miramonte, officials hope the steps they are taking will go some ways to assure parents they’re serious about “a thorough, vigorous and fair investigation of all allegations” “The safety, welfare and education of students is our number one priority,” the United Teachers Los Angeles said in a statement Monday night. “We know that the public understands that the vast majority of teachers are doing remarkable work every day to motivate and educate the children of Los Angeles.” The replacements at Miramonte will come from a pool of applicants, including former employees, said district spokesman Tom Waldman. “We have had a lot of layoffs and budget cuts here and will also look at recent retirees,” he said.

*The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift. We will not solve the problems of the world from the same level of thinking we were at when we created them. More than anything else, this new century demands new thinking: We must change our materially based analyses of the world around us to include broader, more multidimensional perspectives.”

~Albert Einstein*

DT Rebuttal: “The safety, welfare and education of students may be the number one priority of the United Teachers Los Angeles and every states in the US but be assured concerned parents and teachers alike, this will never happen. Beautiful flowers (your children) do not mix with invading grass and the attitude of all School District Superintendents and the United Teachers in Los Angeles is to use pesticide. By this I mean get rid of all the grass (all the teachers) removing in the process a multitude of innocent, dedicated, moralistic teachers born to help your children.

All I can is to despair watching not only valuable resources going to trash but wait for the bad grass to once more invade the beautiful garden and suffocate the pretty flowers. The answer is simple, check the seeds before planting them or allowing them to mix and hurt your children. In the upcoming pool of applicants designed to replace the teachers at Miramonte is absolutely ridiculous and serve no purpose and add to the tax payers wasted money. This is only a repetition and a repecussion of ignorance that does not serve the good teachers which are the target of any moronic unconscious School District Superintendents all over the US.

All I can hope for is one day someone in power, someone wealthy and smart enough to perceive my wisdom will help me to educated the teachers, the parents and the children on the marvels of Astropsychology. As mentioned in Updated – Super Bowl XLVI and Mark Zuckerberg unless your tax dollars is used in the right direction, in the right education there is no hope to free your children from any sexual predators.

If you feel I can help any victimized teachers or offer answers to the parents and the young victims please pass on this newsletter to all the people you feel need to grow up and learn to respect God’ signs and how he designed some of his Plutonic children. Once more do not expect your political, religious and scientific leaders to offer you answers they can never have, instead help me to help them to think outside of the “educated” traditional box because at the end everyone loses, not only your children.

Its time to FIRE all Los Angeles School District authorities and their Superintendents and educate the United Teachers of all US cities! Do not fire the committed teachers willing to think, learn and teach out of the box or do anything that has never been tried before for the safety of their pupils!

Billions of dollars are exchanged, donated everyday for the children education and you may know a non profit organization willing to take a chance in my 45 years of independent research rekindling a rare wisdom that must be shared to all and for all the well being and safety of all the children of the future… Your help is desperately needed…

“if you are not happy or something is missing in your life it is simply because you do not live your destiny as intended by God through the Cosmic Code”

Ask and you shall receive!

Blessings to all

Both students and educators should be careful when participating in online classes.

While online classes can make the learning experience much more convienient and expedient, there are a few things that should be considered in order to make them truly worthwhile, and not a headache.

1. Technology should be airtight: As we all know, computers sometimes don’t work the way they should. Generally, if you invest in cheap technology, you will get more erroneous technology. Educators should consider this when deciding what programs they will use to administer education, or who they hire to build their websites. Someone’s grade may depend on whether the software or web page is running up to speed.

2. Instructors should know how to use the technology: Even if the technology provided is airtight, an online course’s instructor needs to know it inside and out. First of all, if a student does have a problem with an aspect of the technology, the instructor should be able to help. Second, if the instructor cannot correctly implement the technology, it is more likely that mistakes will be made, or students won’t be able to find what they need.

3. Students must be up to the task of being self-taught: It’s not just the instructors that need to go the extra mile when it comes to online classes. Such classes require a good amount of self-discipline, something that many students do not have. Students must be willing to read the assignments and manage their time well, something that is much easier in a structured classroom setting.

4. Student-Instructor communication must be upheld: It is much harder to ask someone questions and communicate when you do not see them on a regular basis. Thus, an instructor of an online course must keep the channels of communication wide open at all times. Also, the students must be proactive about this communication and willing to ask questions. Much of this ties into the teacher knowing the technology, as well as the students having self-discipline.

This is not to say that online courses are an outright bad idea. If implemented correctly, they can accellerate learning for able and motivated students. The problem occurs when the educators involved to not take great care to maintain a level of communication on par with the classroom setting, and that they are also proficient, as well as provided, with airtight technology.

For all film critics are stupid comedy movies or no reason. In the case of this tasty and educational history, where the character manages to rebound.

For all film critics are stupid comedy movies or no reason. In the case of this tasty and educational history, we discover that a person, even an art critic or film, if you can reinvent the overnight, after being the best permanent employee of the month, told his superiors that they must fire him because he is not prepared to ascend to a higher level

I wonder what would a critic of those who remain out of work suddenly? Perhaps because if suicide is not able to see ”between the lines” what is a story that can help us learn to get up after falling, especially when we forget that he who exalts himself will be humbled and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted, is the last straw. Better enjoy this story that has all the flavor of Nia Vardalos and Tom Hanks
What makes Larry? Despite being a regular guy, nothing special, then worked in a warehouse. As was told to prepare, search and find a course at the University of improvement which gives Mercedes Taino (Julia Roberts), a woman who is on the verge of abandonment because relations with her husband Dean (Bryan Cranston) foundered.

Attend class Mercedes Tainot on Speaking: public speaking. She stopped when classes have fewer than ten students, and when Larry arrives and is ten and has to deal with them.
Then go to class with Professor Economics Matsutani (GeorgeTakei) and although he takes the phone in each session, Larry learns, becoming the best student.

Be friends a group of his companions, all young people, especially Talia (Taraji Henson) and Dell boyfriend. She is responsible for putting in tune with the clothing and convinces him to buy a scooter and discover that Larry is very comfortable and cheap travel on a scooter.
Lamar (Cedric the Enterteiner) and his wife B’Ella (Pam Grier), its neighbors will sell the scooter and help to finish off their properties to pay their bills and mortgages.
Larry returned to college and take courses in Speech and Economics is an inspiration to two and his young companions, and especially for the teacher who falls in love with Mercedes Larry

Here I give five tips on how to write a good personal statement for any UCAS applicants.

Find out what your universities want

As with candidates, all universities are different, and each have their own individual preferences in prospective candidates. Some look for a student who is 100% committed to their studies, so these universities would like to see a personal statement with a strong focus on academics. This could include talking about books or articles you’ve read, any lectures you’ve attended or even any private tutoring you may have done relating to the subject. On the other hand there are universities that prefer to see evidence of a more balanced lifestyle. So if you’re applying to one of these uni’s then tell them if you play sports or have completed the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Elaborate on your points

4000 characters may not seem like a lot (and it isn’t) but don’t make any points without elaborating on what you have gained from it. Universities like to see an active involvement in your studies, so if you have read a book you found particularly interesting and mention it in your personal statement, discuss how it made you feel, rather than just saying that you read it and thought it was good. The same goes for anything else you talk about really. If you have been on a relevant trip (to a museum for instance), then what did you gain from it? If you have done some work experience, then what did you learn from it?

Steer clear of careers

From my experience, universities want students who really love their subject, and aren’t just going to grin and bear it for the three or four years they’re at uni so that they can pick up a nice salary when they graduate. So I would advise to steer clear of saying you want to study economics so you can go and work in an investment bank, for example. Obviously, if it is a course where the career is directly linked to it, medicine being a prime example, then ignore this advice completely and show that you have made an educated decision and put a lot of thought into the path that your life will be on if you study that course.

Read about the course

A major downfall many applicants have is that they are applying for something that they have a brief understanding of and pick their uni’s superficially without actually reading the course outline in either a prospectus or on the website. Some uni’s even outline the specific modules that you would be taking if that is where you ended up so why not make use of the information that is so easily available to you. Look at areas of the course that your selected universities have in common and base a few paragraphs around them. For example, if there is a foreign exchange programme on offer by your universities then clearly state that that may be something you are interested in. After all, if you discuss at depth an aspect of the subject that your university doesn’t offer modules in then they may see you not being a good fit for their course as an easy reason to reject you.

Don’t discuss your A Levels/other examination system subjects

Your teachers, referees, whoever, may disagree with me on this point but personally I feel that it is a waste of time discussing the subjects you study at college and how they relate to the course you are applying for. It is often recommended that applicants loosely link their subjects to their chosen course, but admissions tutors already know that English Literature has enabled you to read between the lines of a text, and that Mathematics lets you look at problems objectively, so the idea that you would tell them things they already know seems incredibly wasteful. Whilst 4000 characters may seem a lot to start with, believe me you will be looking for things to cut down by the time it comes to submitting your application. Make the most of the limited space you have.

Everything you need to know about surviving clearing, which will probably be one of the worst days ever!

So you got your results, it’s the end of the world, what are you going to do? Relax, take a deep breath and follow these rules:

1) Don’t panic! your teachers will probably say things like “you really need to start ringing universities” or “Clearing places are going fast!” Well quite frankly they are wrong. Yes clearing places do start disappearing early on but that doesn’t mean they will all be gone by lunchtime, there were still clearing places right up until the day I went to uni a month after results day!

2) Sit down and think about your options. Before you start frantically ringing universities sit down and think about what you really want to do. Had your heart set on that particular uni? Maybe the best option for you is to take a gap year, maybe resit some modules and apply again. Alternatively if you really want to go to university this year and have a uni in mind then go for it! Remember it’s your decision, don’t let anyone force you into something you don’t want to do, university is long, hard and expensive, make sure it’s something you definitely want to do!

3) Research universities and courses. Don’t just pick the first university you see available, check out their website, research different courses and if possible go have a look around. You will only regret not doing this later on when you are doing a course different to what you expected at a university you don’t like. Look at forums and reviews of courses and universities and at university compare sites which will give you an indication of league tables and student satisfaction.

4) Prepare for a long day! Thousands of unlucky applicants will be ringing universities during the clearing process, prepare to be on hold! In total I was on the phone for 7 hours before I got a clearing place, with a phone to each ear! Make sure you are somewhere quiet and comfortable, the last thing you want to be doing is trying to ring a university with your whole family fussing around you!

5) Get your facts straight. Before ringing up a university make sure you have your grades infront of you and some answers prepared to possible questions. For example, they may ask why you want to do that course or why you want to go to that university. Treat it as though you are preparing for an interview. The person on the phone will be having a long day too, the worst thing you can do is um and ah your way through the telephone call, it will only make the process longer and worsen everyone’s mood!

6) Don’t just ring one university! In some cases it can take a while for them to make a final decision and you don’t want to wait around only to find you haven’t been accepted and your next choice has gone. Ring two or three then when you have your decisions you can make yours! In most cases though they will tell you whether you are eligable or not in the same phone call.

Almost everyone has doubts about going to university, right up until they leave and sometimes a few weeks into university life. However in the majority of cases university will be the most memorable years of your life! Everything happens for a reason! Don’t blame yourself and have fun! Read University Survival Guide-Freshers for tips on how to survive your first week!

Everything you need to know about how to survive freshers week, from first meetings to the messy end.

Freshers, a familiar word amongst students and parents alike. For some it’s the week they’ve been waiting for, for others it can be a daunting prospect. Here’s your guide to surviving freshers from someone who managed to survive it themselves.

New friends

So you’ve passed the stage of moving in and realising just how much stuff you didn’t need to bring and now it’s time to find some new faces! If you’re lucky you will have Freshers Guides forcing you to be sociable whether you want to or not, (believe me, you’ll appreciate it later!) But if you are left to your own devices here are some tips:

1) Don’t be shy! Seems obvious but it can be very difficult to pluck up the courage to talk to someone, a good tip is to get in with a group of people already talking, that way if the conversation runs out, there is someone else to pick it up. Spares the awkward silences! If this seems far too scary, find someone else on their own, introduce yourself, ask what course they are doing and where they are from, small talk but you might find something in common! If not, at least you are not on your own!

2) Be friendly! No one is going to want to talk to someone who won’t talk back. Answer people’s questions and always wear a smile. An approachable person will be approached!

3) Don’t judge a book by it’s cover. I’ll be honest, I’m guilty of this. People can be very different to how you first perceive them. Do not write someone off because of how they look or sound, you never know, they could end up being a future friend or more! Make sure you know a person fully before forming an opinion on them.

4) Don’t hide in your room. University can be very difficult for people but the worst thing you can do is stay in your room until lectures. Freshers week is the best time to make new friends so get out there and make them! You’ll only find that people have formed friendship groups without you and you have no one to talk to. Similarly, if someone in your halls or flat hasn’t come out of their room or seems to be struggling, go knock on their door and introduce yourself.

Remember, everyone is bound to feel shy or scared, even if they don’t look it! You’re all in the same boat. It’s the people you meet and the friends you make that make your time at uni the best time of your life. You never know, you might even end up marrying one of them!

First Night Out

Now that you’ve made your new friends, it’s time to begin your freshers week! Most universities will have organised activities to help you meet new people and have a good time! Alternatively, local clubs and bars will have nights aimed at freshers. Just follow these simple tips and you’ll be well on your way to having the week of your life!

1) Don’t over drink or over spend! You’ve probably heard it from parents or other wordly wise adults but here it is from a student (who likes a drink or two!) Do not get wildly drunk on your first night! First nights of freshers are good for meeting loads of people, you don’t want to be waking up the next morning not remembering who any of them are! Get drunk, get happy, but remember your limit! You don’t want to be embarrassing yourself on the first night, you’ll only wake up with a sore head and a toilet full of vomit. Remember, you have a whole week ahead of you! Also, don’t buy rounds of drinks for people, you’ll only end up with an empty wallet and an empty stomach. Everyone prepares for freshers week, no one will need you to buy them drinks! (They probably won’t buy you one back)

2) Don’t get a reputation! So you’ve seen a few nice guys or girls? It’s uni, who doesn’t want to cop off a few times? Try to leave it a few days before you start pulling, maybe actually get to know them first? You’ll only end up with a Slag label if you don’t, even at uni!

3) Have fun but be careful! Get the week off to a good start but don’t ruin the rest of your week! Be responsible and use your head.

The Hangover

Good night last night? You’ve got a whole week still to go. Here’s how to beat the morning after.

1) Put a glass of water by your bed before you go out. When you come back after a heavy night the first thing on your mind is usually, bed. If you’ve got water out already you will see if as you stumble into your room. The worst thing to do is going to bed dehydrated, you’ll only feel worse in the morning!

2) Avoid salty foods on the way home. Kebab shops, chances are if you haven’t before you will now! Don’t cover your food in salt. Alcohol dehydrates you and salt will only make it worse!

3) Vitamin C. Drinking plenty of fresh orange juice the next morning will instantly perk you up. The Vitamin C helps combat effects of drinking alcohol, as well as being healthy!

4) Eat. The thought may make you want to curl up and die but don’t spend all day with an empty stomach. Eating things like bread will help soak up excess alcohol. A good plate of eggs on toast always does the trick! (failing that, biscuits will always make you feel better)

5) Drink Less. May seem the boring and most obvious answer but if you want to beat the hangover, don’t drink as much! You can still have a good time with half as much alcohol you, honest!

Hopefully this will ensure you survive your freshers week. Remember, be sociable, be sensible, but most of all have fun!

Lecture halls in the Wild West – semester abroad in the U.S

There are many good reasons and opportunities to opt for one semester at a university in the United States.

Firstly, the universities that participate in the exchange program, a very good course selection, which is often more diverse than here with us in Germany.

As the examples mentioned here are the Boston University, the California State Universities of San Marco and Long Beach. Even in the big cities New York, Washington and San Francisco is of course universities with which you can apply as a foreign student.

If you are not applying to the partner university of the home university, one should bear in mind that the tuition fees in the U.S. are considerably higher than ours. You should already expect approximately 8000-18000 U.S. dollars and at the elite universities can sometimes even be at the 30,000 U.S. dollars. In addition there are the costs for accommodation and meals. The accommodation is in most cases, a dorm room, which is often located on the grounds of the university, so a little different than ours. Sometimes there is also the option of staying with a host family. In any case, one must also the cost of the visa, which you can apply at the embassy, for example also take into account online. These are about 100 € and if you have not yet completed the language test (TOEFL), one should take into account for this include the amount of 180 €.

If you would like – and it is recommended – you can still take out additional travel insurance.

If you have this all thought out and planned, but the journey is nothing to prevent, or at least almost nothing, because we must, of course, still apply. This is best with all the recent testimonies, attended classes, the result of the language test and a letter of recommendation from a professor.

Versatile offer assistance while various organizations that advise and inform on enrollment are helpful. Feed information can be found at www.sem-usa.de.

Now the semester abroad can come at last. In addition to the lecture halls and libraries are often many different sports and recreational facilities on campus.

The university takes in the U.S. so a slightly different place in the everyday life of a student than we are accustomed to in Germany, because much play on the campus itself.

Then maybe you’ll find in baseball, football – or cheerleading team also made new friends and learn as well as the sport of everyday Americans know better.

Then you need some time off from campus life then the U.S. lures with varied landscapes (from sandy beaches to the ski area) and with many interesting cities. There are times only the cities of San Francisco, Las Vegas, New York and Los Angeles earlier, all of which are worth a trip. So no matter whether it’s the East, the West Coast or even the golden mean is, with a semester abroad in North America is one of many rich experiences and a good vocabulary.
