The USA PATRIOT Act of 2001 as enacted by the 107th session of the US Congress and signed into law on October 26, 2001 by President George Bush, radically abridged the prior restrictions which had been placed upon America’s law enforcement agencies in their continued duty to curtail terrorist activities. It unleashed new freedoms for the various crime agencies in conducting searches relating to e-mail communications, financial, telephone, medical and related records in regards to foreign intelligence gathering efforts within the continental United States of America.
