A lawyer on trial.

Stale smoke fills the air. Beams of light cast an ominous orange glow on the room’s already rustic wooden furnishings, flickering against the smoke particulates. I’ve been here before, a hundred times before, this is my element, this is my life, this is me—Court.

I’m on trial for a crime I didn’t commit, but that’s what they all say. I used to be hearing them say it, never the one pleading cliche. My watch reads half-past three, but my eyes burn as if its half-past 3 days. I haven’t slept since the start of this case, and it will be my toughest yet. Me, a respectable country lawyer, having to defend myself to these heathens I usually so easily persuade.

The last case I lost was more than a decade ago, it wasn’t my first, but it was the most important. I lost all hope in the system after that, I stopped trying, I stopped putting myself into cases. My background research is sloppy, my evidence is minimal, but my delivery is amazing. I could convince a jury that eggs boil faster on the moon if I had to. It’s not about what you say, only how you say it. But this was different, this was my case, I’ve never defended myself before.

“Mr Husker,” a distant voice cracked, “did you or did you not vandalize the hall vending machine?”

“It ate my last dollar,” I replied, lethargic and heavy.

Cigarette vending machines should be banned in pubs this weekend a new rule will be effective for quitting smoking among minors.

Cigarette vending machines should be banned in pubs this weekend a new rule will be effective for quitting smoking among minors.

Saturday, it will be illegal to sell tobacco in public places, pubs, clubs and restaurants with those who break the rules face £ 2,500 fines.

While vending machines account for less than one percent of net sales, from 11 to 15 years of age are more likely to buy their tobacco in the population as a whole.

British Heart Foundation estimates that more than 46 000 children in this age group to acquire them.

Sinclair Collis, located in Wolverhampton, and has 20 000 planes, fought to prevent the ban saying the move would eliminate the cost of £ 400million for the industry and 550 jobs.

The company claimed that the Department of Health for the action went against EU free trade rules and the right company to use the property.

The DOH made the rule to prevent youth from obtaining cigarettes and discourage others from smoking.

He said the government had failed to find other solutions such as using technology to enforce age restrictions.

Pubs will still be able to sell cigarettes, but they will buy at the counter so that the seller can verify that the purchaser is over 18 years.

The vending machine ban was approved in 2009 with health activists, saying it was a “brave decision” by the government.

Former Labour minister Ian McCartney, the proposed ban, saying they were “outrageous loophole in our country guarantees” against tobacco.

Then Health Minister, Gillian Merron, said he hoped the ban discourages young people from taking the habit.

She said: “The tobacco industry consistently recruited young people to replace those who give up smoking or die each year.

“We are obviously aware of how the current economic climate affecting small businesses, why we do not want to initiate the effect of this legislation until 2011 to 2013 and department stores to small shops.

Peter Hollins, director general of the British Heart Foundation, said: “relegated to scrap the machines are easy to cut cigarettes to children.

“This policy must be made in the United Kingdom as soon as possible.”

Nutrition.

In the face of what many see as an exploding obesity epidemic among both adults and children, a growing number of state and regional legislatures are passing laws that prohibit the sale of junk foods in school vending machines and cafeterias.

The new regulations differ from region to region, but the general drift is to reduce the availability of sugar, salt, and fat laden foods and snacks, and replace them with more nutritious healthy foods and snacks.

The money issue

Such good intentions are not always easy to implement. Money raises its ugly head at numerous points along the way, making it difficult to move to more healthy alternatives.

First, vending machine operators naturally prefer to fill their machines with junk food because these “foods” generally have two major advantages over other more healthy alternatives. They have a higher profit margin, and they sell better because kids (for whatever reason) prefer them. This means the vending operators can offer schools attractive profit-sharing incentives when they fill up their machines with pop and candy bars.

As everybody in the business knows, “healthy” vending machines cannot properly compete with “unhealthy” ones until attractive, good-tasting healthy snack products are made available at a competitive price.

And student organizations themselves are split on the wisdom of going “healthy”. Many student groups use candy sales as one of their primary fund-raising methods. According to Laura Thomas, a senior at Wilcox High School in Santa Clara, California, “These sales fit the needs of the clubs because they can sell at school, during lunch or in class. If clubs were forced to switch to selling other things like calendars or magazines, they would have to drastically shift their target market. Chances are students simply wouldn’t be interested in those new products as much as they are in candy.”

In other words, not allowing junk food sales by student groups would make fund-raising programs in the schools much more difficult, and would threaten the current fund-raising structure that feeds cash directly into the school program. Of course not everyone agrees this would be a bad thing. As another California student, Leah Karlins, a junior at Branham High School in San Jose said “it seems no one is asking the obvious question — why do our schools need to sell brownies to pay for sports teams and clubs?”

Meal changes don’t come easily

There are similar problems when it comes to changing cafeteria menus. Not only is it usually less expensive to offer french fries every day, but it is much easier, takes less planning, and will probably be more broadly accepted by the students doing the eating.

Menu changes usually involve a good deal of experimentation and have to be introduced slowly. Students are not going to switch to “eating healthy” without a relatively long and gradual transition period.

And of course cost is always a factor. Most school boards in the U.S. receive a meal subsidy from one or more levels of government, so they must keep their costs below that level. At the same time they must meet the gradually tightening nutritional standards. These standards are sometimes the result of intense industrial lobbies that appear to encourage “healthy” change, but can also make it difficult.

For instance, long-standing policies of the U.S. Department of Agriculture tend to discriminate in favor of diets that are heavy in meat and milk. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine notes that meat alternatives are not subsidized by government, while meat and meat products are.

The result is that a low-fat, low-cholesterol veggie burger is often twice as expensive as a high-fat hamburger. The same thing happens with milk. Milk production is subsidized, but not the production of low-fat alternatives. And milk is even mandated within the U.S. federal school guidelines which require schools to offer only milk to drink, and include it in the base price of the lunch meal.

The bottom line is that the problem of poor eating habits among children is not something that is likely to go away quickly. While schools may dominate a child’s daily activities, they still only account for one meal a day. So what the children are doing for the rest of their meals is even more important.

This fact supports the claim that what schools really should be doing is teaching about nutrition and the importance of physical activity, and using school programs to set an example — as a matter of “putting your money where your mouth is”.

The objective should be to have these habits carry over into the rest of their choices and activities. Lunch programs, vending machines, and school activity programs are not solutions to the problems of overweight and inactivity. They primarily serve as examples of a better lifestyle, and point children in a healthier direction.

The classroom is set up like it is, because it is a model for the normal business world. It is set up the exact way that most of today's businesses are set up.

Why is a classroom run like it is? Why are students made to sit and stay as they are? Why do they have to ask to do all the things that come naturally to a person such as go to the bathroom or get something to eat? The simple reason is that not only is the classroom a microcosm of the world, it is an exact representation of the average world that the average worker will move into in our society. When the classroom concept of today was created it was created in such a way to prepare the students for the new and upcoming business world.

The new and upcoming business world that was emerging in the late 1940’s early 1950’s was a environment of desks in a row with a manger looking over the whole scene. The exact model that is, to this day, the example of a class room environment. The basic business model of the middle class job of today has a group of cubicles in a row. At the end of these cubicles is a “team leader” or a “supervisor”. In a corner, in an office bigger than the cubes and in many cases a quite large cube itself, there sits a manager that it is assumed know more and has more experience than all of the other workers. The employees are discouraged from getting up from their desks, and they are also discouraged from frequents trips to the restrooms, vending machines, or even the talking to of other coworkers. If they are away from their desk for an extended amount of time, they are questioned as to their whereabouts and their reasons as to why they believed this was a good idea. As a former worker in many fortune 500 companies and call centers that are based on this model that creates this environment, I experienced these actions and the repercussions that are forced upon the employees that break these cardinal rules.

It is pointed out that these rules are in place to keep the workplace working most efficiently, and that the employees can not work to their maximum potential without these rules in place. However, it has been shown in many studies that “a smaller group environment with a worker given choices as to their time management, they will become more efficient.” (Marzanno, 1995) It has also been found that when a group of workers are allowed to cooperatively work in a fast paced, choice based, work encouraged environment “the output in exponentially increased.”(Covey, 1999)

However, our society is one of stagnancy when it comes to education and workmanship. We, as Americans, have always believed in the “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it”mentality which was seen in a glaring example in the great Japanese car manufacturer shift of the 1980’s. Because of this, the school environment has stayed exactly the same and still prepares our children for just this kind of environment. In fact it mimics the environment to a tee. The largest desk is say in a corner, and belongs to the teacher who it is believed knows more and has more experience on the subject in which they are teaching. They oversee and tell the entire class what they need to do, and how they need to do it. it is assumed in a glaring way that the Teacher knows the exact and right way of doing everything. There is no room for creativity or second guessing of the teacher’s authority, much like that of the upper level boss. If there is a teaching0assistant, they are below the teacher but it is understood they know more than the students, or they would not be in the position they are in. This, in fact, often is not the case.

The students are positioned in perfect rows, mimicking the desk and cubicle environment. they are not allowed to speak, unless it is with permission or if it is directly related to the lesson. They can not go to the bathroom, vending machines, or anything else outside of the classroom unless they have specified permission from the teacher or head manager of the classroom. Anything outside of the “norm”is considered wrong and insubordinate. If a student does not comply to these rules and dictates exactly, they will meet with repercussions that can eventually cause them to be expelled from the school itself. This expulsions is equal to the stress and reality of getting fired in a company. By being expelled, a large number of opportunities are held from the student. Just as getting fired will cause both financial and personal problems for an employee. These things are held above both the student and worker’s head as a possible and real happening, therefore it is a deterrent for getting out of line in any way.

The similarities of these two enviroments are too obvious not to be on purpose. As the archives of the teaching models reveals, it is not a coincidence. This teaching model has been created and developed exactly for this reason.

Ancient inventions that are still very much in use in this high-tech modern age of ours.

Some ancient inventions that are still very much in use today include the wheel (ca 3500 BC), wheelbarrow (1st century BC), buttons (ca 700 BC), ink (ca. 3000 BC) and soap (ca. 700 BC).

Let’s look some more truly fantastic ancient inventions, all of which were included in the list of the greatest inventions of all time, compiled by Encyclopedia Britannica.

Ice Skates

Chiefly used nowadays for recreational activities and sport competitions, this footwear was chiefly used for warfare during winter as early as 3000 BC, as some archaeological evidences from Scandinavia suggest. It was made of animal shinbones that were grounded flat for sliding across frozen surfaces and was tied to the feet with leather straps.

Encyclopedia

Greek for “all-round education,” this is a form of reference work, primarily employed as an aid for research, usually consisting of several volumes which give comprehensive information dealing with the entire range of human knowledge or a specialized field. Early examples include the collection of Plato’s teachings by Speusippus (4th century BC) and “Natural History” by Pliny the Elder (1st century AD).

Lock and Key

Chiefly employed to keep doors, gates, containers and vehicles secure to protect one’s belongings from theft, the earliest form of this device, which was invented by the Assyrians around four thousand years ago, was made of cylindrical wood with a hole bored through it, and has a corresponding wooden pin inserted through the hole to fasten it.

Alphabet

An ordered set of symbols invented by the Canaanite-Phoenician civilization (ca. 1400 BC to 1050 BC) to represent speech sounds, from which most modern day scripts were derived, including Greek, Hebrew, Latin, Cyrillic, Arabic, Coptic, Brahmi, Thai and many more. These symbols collectively called alphabet are rudiments that must be learned for one to achieve literacy.

Compass

Still very much widely used for navigational purposes, this instrument came into existence more than two thousand years ago, probably during Qin Dynasty of ancient China, after the discovery of the magnetic properties of lodestones that always align with the magnetic North-South of the Earth.

Dentures

An item worn to enable those who lack the real ones the ability to chew food more easily and also to project a more beautiful smile. It was already worn purely for aesthetic purposes as early as seventh century BC by the Etruscans; and was carved out either of stone, wood, ivory, dead man’s bone or animal teeth, secured with the use of gold wire.

Chocolate

Popular food item commonly mixed in sweets such as candy bars, cookies and ice cream. Archaeological finds indicate that this calorie-rich food was being consumed by Mesoamerican cultures of the Mayans and Aztecs as early as 2,500 years ago. Dark ones, high in cocoa content, are rich sources of flavonoids, which are believed to be good for cardiovascular health.

Vending Machine

An appliance that releases merchandise when sufficient amount of money in coins or bills is deposited into the provided slot. In the first century, Hero of Alexandria invented an early version of this machine that accepted coins that weighed down a lever to open a valve, which, in turn, released a predetermined volume of water for religious purification purposes. Modern ones sell a wide range of products consisting mostly of foods, beverages, cigarettes and toiletries.

Boomerang

It is usually made of wood or plastic with two or more arms formed at angles and fly in a curved paths returning to the point of origin when thrown correctly. This aerodynamic weapon is believed to have been in use for hunting and hand-to-hand combat by the Aboriginal people of Australia for more than 15,000 years.

Beer

A form of beverage, usually available in six-pack, which men often consume with their buddies while watching sport programs. Since carbohydrates from starch-rich plants like malted barley, wheat and rice naturally breakdown in a process called fermentation, this popular beverage might be the world’s oldest alcoholic drink, possibly dating earlier than 6000 BC based on recorded history of the Sumerians.
