A survey and research study on pornographic video was conducted to determine the effects of watching pornographic videos containing sex episodes.

A conservative citizen born in a conservative country, we often expect that viewing videos with sexual contents often result to immature sex engagement or unpleasing behaviours. With global rise of home-based media technologies, most movies and video clips today having more sexual contents are becoming more accessible and influential to today’s youths. And oftentimes, some movies present sex before marriage which is also known as pre-marital sex.

The question here is that “What will be the impact of these rampant trends to the behaviours of youth?” “Is it true that youths having highest level of exposure to porn videos are more likely to have initiated sexual intercourse than those with the lowest levels of exposure to sexual content in the media?”

It is important to study the effects of porn videos in order to solve the problem of pre-marital sex here in the Philippines. However, we only limit the study with the effects of viewing porn and if it is really one of the causes of pre-marital sex today.

II. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

In an online article by Lagorio (2006), she stated that researchers found that “teens who see and hear a lot about sex in the media were 120 percent or 2.2 times more likely to have early sexual intercourse as those who are rarely exposed to sexual content.” Another online article by Strand (2010) stated that “adolescents who have experimented first with pornography tried to do what they saw on the screen”. Some effects of porn addiction could be early sexual behaviour, early pregnancy, ever-increasing sexual lust, masturbation as the easiest way of release, and even rape. “Men consuming porn rate their real partners much less attractive” and they prefer to go online.

Princeton’s Witherspoon Institute researcher, Pamela Paul (2010) also found out that “porn today is far more violent” because it becomes a “sexual junk food” for the men as well as women. 

In the contrary, the 1970 Presidential Commission on Obscenity and Pornography conclude that “there is no relationship between exposure to erotic material and subsequent behaviour.” Defenders of pornography argue that it is not harmful and should not be regulated or banned. 

III. METHODOLOGY OF RESEACH

Among the students in Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) in Dumaguete City, 

Philippines, the registrar listed 1,160 fourth year students including graduating and non-graduating. We get the 8.6 percent of the total fourth year population in Main Campus I and II to carry out this purposive survey. Thus, this study conducted in 2011 involves only 100 respondents. 

The moment we started wandering inside the campus to look for fourth year students to be surveyed, we noticed that there are different reactions given every time the questionnaires are passed to the students. Some frowned, laughed, mostly embarrassed and commented that they are disgusted with the questions and those should have been written in a different tone or way. Also majority of the students enquired why we chose this certain topic to be studied. However, there were also students who vigorously answered the questionnaires and some got conscious about what we have found out so far. We also noticed that most of those who reacted negatively were males. 

Moreover, there is this one male student from the College of Business and Accountancy (CBA) who accused us of promoting pornographic videos in the campus. He also corrected us saying we should have changed some of the questions because these were so vulgar.

Another student from the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) turned his back the moment he read the questions on the paper and said our questions are “brutal”.

Meanwhile, the Bachelor of Science in Criminology students had reacted positively to the survey. This 24-year old female said that students should be truthful in answering our questions since this is a good and interesting study. Another criminology male student expressed that we were brave enough to conduct the survey.

We finished conducting the survey under the frequent drops of the raining sky.

IV. ANALYSIS

All the 100 respondents revealed that they have seen porn videos for the last two years. Results show that 56% of the students have seen porn videos one to five months ago while only 13% admitted they saw porn two years ago. 

Thirty four percent of the respondents admitted they have watched more than 20 videos with sexual content for the past two years while 40% answered they only have seen one to five porn videos.

Rated X movies acquired 54% viewers while rated XXX has 34% viewers. Only twelve percent of the respondents choose rated XX.

According to the survey, 65% of the students have watched pornographic videos at the age 15 to 19 years old while 16% of the youths started seeing porn at the age of 15 and below. It only shows that most of the youths, boys and girls alike, are engaging into porn video viewing. 

The students divulged that the reasons why they are into these acts are curiosity (59%), educational purposes (40%), entertainment (23%), and pleasure (14%). Thus, this study shows that for the most part, youths are driven to see porn by curiosity.

Meanwhile, this study reveals that 55% of the adolescents watch videos with sexual content whenever there is porn video available in the market or in their houses. Others watch when bored (28%), lonely (13%), and depressed (4%).

 The research proves that 38% among the youths agree that they become matured by indulging in this activity while 7% strongly disagrees. Moreover, 34% have neutral thinking whether or not porn can make someone aggressive. Only 15% agreed that it is so. There is also 15% among the respondents who answered that videos with sexual contents can bring lust to the viewer while majority answered neutrally.

Forty eight percent strongly disagree that watching porn pushes them to commit sex. They don’t think that it can drive teens into committing sexual intercourse. Only 9% agreed and thinks so. 

Porn as making them more educated acquired 44% against 5% who strongly disagrees. Thus, they believe that it gives them more knowledge and learning.

Meanwhile, most of the fourth year students surveyed are neutral about this act making them malicious. Only 10% of them agreed on the matter.

Results of the survey show, however, that majority (36%) of the respondents agreed that pornographic videos can be one of the causes of sex before marriage although 76% refuted that they actually experience premarital sex. There is only 24% of them admitted.

V. CONCLUSION

In this 2011 study on the effects of porn video viewing, we verified that videos and movies with sex scenes is one of the causes of pre-marital sex among fourth year students of NORSU Main Campus I and II and most of the respondents agreed that it is so. 

Moreover, we found out that this activity can make them mature as well as educated.

VI. RECOMMENDATION

In order to stop or at least minimize the uncontrollable number of youths committing pre-marital sex, there is a need of the society to tackle issues that might be the reason of this. Certain studies must be conducted in order to find out the real reasons of sex before marriage. 

However, pornography must also be tackled the authorities like it finally demonized smoking. The government must take an action about this “widespread virus’ called pornography since it is against the biblical standards. We must keep pure by fleeing immorality but work to remove this sexual perversion.

If you are like me, you get confused easily!  Part of it is abnormal forgetfulness (post Alzheimer’s Disease maybe?) and part of it is not really caring all that much.  “Things” just don’t matter at my age. 

Unless, of course, it makes life easier.  In my opinion, the iPad does just that plus it makes me feel safer. 

NO MORE FROZEN CLAW SYNDROME! 

I have discovered that an iPad 2 gives our old fingers a break with Touch Screens!  Hang up that old mouse that freezes your fingers and thumb into a permanent claw!  The iPad’s touch screen makes it wonderfully simple for seniors to wander through screens and accomplish connections to the outside world.  All with the touch of a finger tip!

NO MORE SQUINTING OR SMALL PRINT! 

We do not like to admit it but our eyes are failing.  The programs on the iPad have large icons that are easily visible and are more inviting that an arrow (cursor) that you cannot find on the screen because you jerked your hand for some unknown reason.  Our bodies do not always do what we wish them to do! 

Plus, the websites can be easily enlarged by using the “pinch out” function.  This allows seniors to increase the size of characters quickly to a very readable size. 

NO MORE SAYING:  “WHERE DID MY FILE (OR PHOTO) GO?” 

Another cool feature is the ease in which photos can be emailed or received on the iPad.   The iPad decides for you as to where your photos will be stored so there is no hunting or guessing as to where to find what you need or where you want to put it. 

To email a photo, you go to your PHOTOS application, touch the “Send” menu option and tap “Email Photo.”   To save a photo, just click the attachment and an option window will pop up allowing you to “Save Image” and (TaDa!) the photo is saved to your Photos file.  You can also “Copy” or “Cancel.”  It is your choice.  

The automatic saving and sending of photos by email without having to hunt down where the photo is located (or saved) is a blessing all on its own.  It has always been a challenge for me to find where I placed downloaded files from my camera or from a thumb drive — especially since I have “Recent Memory Loss” Syndrome and forget the name of a folder I created for my new photos seconds later!  Talk about frustration! 

THE iPAD IS VIDEO CHAT READY! 

Another great feature of the iPad is that it is “Skype Ready.”   If you are not familiar with Skype, it is a video chat service (basic service is free) that requires you to install a small program so you can talk Face to Face with your loved ones over the computer or iPad.  

With the iPad, you no longer have to deal with the web cam installation and how to mount it near your computer.  The iPad has the camera already installed and you can see yourself on the Skype screen so you know what is being seen by others.  Skype provides a ring tone that is so loud you can hear it in Denmark letting you relax as you cannot miss any important calls as long as Skype is running on your computer.  

I FEEL SAFER WITH AN iPAD NEARBY! 

What especially appeals to me is that Skype could be my “back up cell phone” if my one and only cell phone breaks down or gets lost.  I could call my cell phone on Skype and the ring will tell me that “someone” left it under a towel in the bathroom!  

SEEING IT WORK: 

I wanted to see how the iPad actually worked.   There are quite a few videos on Elder Gadget (http://www.eldergadget.com/products/tablet/) that show all the features that appeal to seniors, such as:   

Reading magazines, books, poetry, and viewing maps, photos, videos, movies, music, TV shows, visiting senior chat rooms and, of course, talking on Skype.  Elder Gadget is only set up to give reviews that help Seniors — so do not expect to purchase anything from this web site.   

COST MAY BE A FACTOR: 

If you comparison shop at Shopping.com for just the iPad, you will find the smallest version costs just over $400 and the largest, with all the bells and whistles, around $900.  Other “tablets” can start as low as $140. 

IS IT ALL ABOUT THE SIZE? 

I was surprised at how many sizes are available for tablets.  From a pocket size of five inches to a monitor size of twelve inches, you can have your pick.  A seven inch tablet would fit in my waist belt purse (or a back pocket) easily.   That way I would be connected to the world (especially my family and friends) no matter what I am doing.  (Snoring included!) 

ONE DISADVANTAGE – ALMOST: 

The one small disadvantage is that passwords are required when downloading apps and the iPad’s browser does not have password memory capabilities.  Perhaps the next generation of iPads will solve this dilemma. 

Does a Senior Citizen really need an iPad?  

As long as you have a cell phone and a computer available 24/7 because you are home 90% of the time, then probably not.  But if you are retired and travel, then you may need to have access to maps and other information nationwide or worldwide (or what’s on sale at Dillard’s, JC Penny, or Walmart) while you are in the car. In that case, perhaps having an iPad is just what you want in order to reach out through a wireless connection when you need to do so. 

We knew this day would come, Seniors, we just did not know we would be alive to see it!   Sometimes I just sit back in amazement at technology.  Stay tuned in and turned on!

In the Windsor Heights suburb of Des Moines, Iowa, one can find what is believed to be the only sculpture on earth created – supposedly to scale and in extraordinary detail – of what the creator claims to be an adult specimen of the legendary creature commonly known as Bigfoot.

Clifford LaBrecque, 73, commissioned the sculpture as long ago as 1976, claiming that it three months were needed to get it from his head into that of the sculptor, the fiberglass-and-fur model costing $9,000 at the time, and according to the owner, accurate in every detail

This striking model, dominating his dining room at 8 feet tall supposedly depicts accurately what the 73 year old recalls of sightings and an actual physical encounter on June 18, 1977, between 9-10 p.m. near a woodpile behind his house.

LaBrecque claims to have observed, before the scuffle, on most nights a Bigfoot specimen that was on occasion accompanied by what appeared to be two juveniles. He argued with a Des Moines newspaper over Bigfoot photographs copyright should the newspaper act on his tip and obtain photographs, having decided that, on June 18th he would shoot the larger Bigfoot.

It had been in 1977 that he first laid eyes on Bigfoot, one night looking into his back yard to see what he thought was the neighbour’s dog on the wood pile, till he realized that height of the wood meant the creature must be something much bigger.

That set a series of sightings in motion that would lead him to spend countless nights looking for more evidence of the creatures.  He does fully understand that some people are very skeptical, though he has a video which he refuses to make public, swearing blindly that it is of the creature in the natural habitat.

There was a showing of his  Bigfoot model at the 1977 Iowa State Fair, and it did indeed attract many visitors, some of whom told stories of their own Bigfoot sightings.  LaBrecque himself has been the subject of ridicule for creating the Bigfoot model before actually seeing it, though to him that sighting merely confirmed all that he had previously heard..

This Bigfoot story has only come to light again because a news reporter showed renewed interest in the creature, sighted four years ago, supposedly in a rural area near West Plains. To this man, and many others, Bigfoot really does exist, but how you feel about this legend only you can decide.

Beyonce has been in a relationship with rapper Jay Z since 2002 and together they have collaborated on numerous singles. Beyonce and Jay Z are a very private couple and hide anything to do with the relationship. In April 2008 the couple were married in New York city but Beyonce did not show her wedding ring until September 2008. She only announced their marriage in an opening montage for a listening party for I am … Sasha Fierce.
