A New Estimate to mull over.

What has been amazing about the poverty line estimates is the politics around it and the pace with which the governments have shown reduction in poverty.

The poverty line had been a political tool to claim that the government schemes have been effective, shocking claim when official figures show that less than 50 % of actual beneficaries receive the benefit from the government schemes.

The biggest problem with the poverty line has been that it does not reflect the true picture of the well-being of Indians. The problem is not with the Planning Commission, which releases the poverty line figures, but with the survey on which they depend to come out with abysmally low figures.

The National Sample Survey Office’s consumer expenditure survey fails to capture how people are spending. In a country where poulty items consumption is on the rise, the NSS in 2009-10 estimated that a cost of a kg of mutton in Delhi was Rs 100 and a dozen of eggs was Rs 15. Its high dependance on cost of cereals, whose consumption is falling, adds to the flaw.

In today’s India it believes impossible for anyone to survive for Rs 28 in urban areas and Rs 22 in rural areas, the new poverty line. Even plan panel deputy chairperson Montek Singh Ahluwalia agrees that the poverty line is low but he his claim that even though this low poverty line helps in measuring the impact of social sector schemes on well being of people.

It is true because the planning commission compared the present NSSO figures with the similar flawed survey of 2004-05. So, it one has to believe that the number of people below the poverty line had fallen but how much can be debated.

Historically, the poverty line in India had been low. Here, is poverty line from before independence till 2009-10.

First poverty line was fixed in 1867-68 of Rs 16 per head in rural areas and Rs 35 in urban for a year.

Second came in 1939 with Rs 15 and Rs 20 per capita expenditure per month for rural and urban areas respectively.

After Independence, first poverty line was fixed in 1962 based on prices of 1960-61: It was Rs 20 per capita per month for rural areas and Rs 25 for urban areas.

First calorie based (2,400 calories per capita) poverty line came out in 1973-74. It was Rs 49.63 per capita per month for rural areas and Rs 56.76 per capita per month for urban areas. 321 million or 54.1 percent of Indians were poor.

1997-98: poverty line of Rs 56.84 per capita per month for rural areas and Rs 70.33 for urban areas was fixed. 329 million or 51.3 % of Indians were poor.

1983: Poverty line of per capita of Rs 89.5 for a month in rural areas and Rs 115.65 for urban areas was fixed. 323 million or 44.5 % of Indians were poor.

1993-1994: Poverty line of per capita Rs 205.84 for a month in rural areas and Rs 281.35 for urban areas was fixed: 320 million or 36 % of Indians were poor.

2004-05: Poverty line of per capita Rs 356 for a month rural areas and Rs 538 in urban areas was fixed: 301 million or 27.5 % of Indians were poor.

The government changed the methodology from calorie based to include expenditure on sanitation, education and health in the Tendulkar Methodology.

2004-05: Poverty line of Rs 446 in rural areas and Rs 578 in urban areas was fixed: 407 million or 37.2 percent of Indians were poor.

2009-10: Poverty line of Rs 672 in rural areas and Rs 859 in urban areas was fixed: 354 million or 29.8 % of Indians were poor.

From this it is evident that India had a low poverty line but what had hit the popular perception that the new poverty line fails to encompass the inflation in the last few years. On account of this, it helped the plan panel to claim reduction in poverty line of 7.4 % in a period of five years between 2009-10, which to many does not appear to be correct.

The public perception that the government with a stroke of a pen had turned over 5 crore Indians into rich was confirmed when the government scrapped its own methodology and Prime Minister came on record to claim that methodology was 30 year-old. But, what he failed to tell was that the government in 2005 had asked Suresh Tendulkar to recommend a new methodology to estimate poverty to canvass the presennt ground realities.

Tendulkar submitted his report in 2007 and the government accepted his recommendations in 2009.

The data released on March 19 was the first official poverty estimate based on Tendulkar committee and it did not last more than four days.

Both UPA and NDA has used the poverty line to claim that its programmes had worked and that of others have not. The NDA government in 1997-98 claimed a huge reduction in poverty to claim the number of poor have gone down since they came power. When UPA came back to power in 2004, it was quick to say that poverty had increased during the NDA regime and accused the NDA of changing methodology to show reduction in numbers.

Economists and political masters in Delhi believe that such claims have impact on people during elections. But, the results of 2004 elections showed that it fails to work as people see the ground realities rather than statistical jugglery of the government.

To me, instead of poverty line, the government should come out with well-being index of all the Indians indicating their income, expenditure and assets. This will truely reflect the number of deprived in India.

The government should depend on the Census data rather than that of the national sample survey, which provides the government of the day scope to manipulate the data.

Lets see the new technical group constituted to review the poverty methodologies comes out with something different which can end controversy over India’s poverty line.

This is part two of "The small town of John". Here you can read one of the things that had happened to him after he became so rich.

Well you all know who John is and that he became really rich, well now i am going to tell you a story of John of an adventure he had done after he became rich. This one time something really special happened. John didn’t know what had happened and i am not sure if i really know what happened. So i tell you and than you can deside what you think had happened.

John was walking down the street, the sun was shining and for the first time in his life John didn’t had to worry about money or had to worry about anything. Because everything was alright, there was nothing wrong. So John walked happy down the street with a big smile on his face. A smile so big that even people around him felt happy because of his smile.

So John kept walking until he saw 2 guys robbing a lady and John couldn’t believe it, those 2 guys were hitting the lady and were torchering her to get her purse, to steal her money. But this womand didn’t let go of the purse without a fight, but she was loosing and she was loosing big time. So John ran directly towards the woman, trying to save her. He started to fight against the 2 guys who had attacked the lady, during this fight the poor and injured lady took off, and ran away from the fight. While John was dealing mean punches to those guys, to make sure they would never attack or rob someone again.

So when he had won the fight and had defeated those 2 guys he walked away and he felt that his legs were to heavy to walk on, he had no more power in his body and he couldn’t move anymore. So he felt down on the street and there he was laying on the street with nobody near him and nobody to help him.

But he was so tired from the fight that he closed his eyes and fell asleep. The last thing on his mined was the lady he had saved and the good thing he had done today. He didn’t know that he had been stabbed by those guys and that he had a big cut in his back, he was laying there on the ground, nobody around him, nobody knew he was there so nobody could help him.

But the next thing he knew was he opened his eyes in a nice warm hospital, his bag had been healed by the docters and there was nothing wrong with him.

But how did he get to the hospital? Who took him there? You think you know or is it just another secret of John?

Korowai tribe that lives on trees and has been adopting the centuries old life style

In south east of Papua, there is Korowai tribe, which was unknown before 1970. This area is the south east part of the western New Guinea and it is doubted that their inhabitants still eat human flesh.

The Korowai people are 3000 in number. Even they did not know before 1970 that there are other humans reside in this world too. They used to think that they were the only humans residing in this world.

LANUGAGE

The Korowai language belongs to Awyu-Dumut family which is the language of South East Papua. An English linguistic expert has now prepared its grammar and dictionary.

HABITATATION

The majority of Korowai people lives on houses prepared on the trees. There residential area is totally separate from the rest of the village. They do not like to go any where from their residential area. But, when they related to the civilized world and especially the European people established many villages from the residence where they provided all the possible facilities, even then they did not move from their place. But from 1980s few Korawai people started shifting to these new villages in Yaniruma. But there number was very less. These villages are been established at the shores “Mu” and “Mbasman” of River Becking, which is not very far away from their own area.

In 1987 a village was established at Manggel, in 1988 second village was established at Yafufla, in 1989 a village named Mabul was established at the shores of River Eilanden and in 1998 another village was established at Khaiflambolup. In short these villages were prepared for Korowai people but in response they did not show the enthusiasm that was expected. This is due to this indifferent attitude that many villages are still shown empty.

The basic reason for that may be that these colonies are situated far away from the resources of food (Sago). In the local language the word “Sago” is used for food.

ECONOMY

The Korowai people are basically hunters and fulfill their appetite by hunting. They also do gardening and now gradually diverting towards yielding crop. The Korowai people are conscious of the importance of protein from the beginning and therefore they hunt animals and are very expert in fishing. They fulfill their requirements of proteins from the above-mentioned food.

What business Korowai people do? And what they sell or buy? The information regarding this is very little and not enough. There are special ways in Korowai tribe to carry out the daily chores of life for instance “Sago” means the responsibility of preparing food is of adult youngsters. They not only collect food but also prepare it. Likewise whatever religious ceremonies they celebrate according to their beliefs, youngsters also play their role in these ceremonies. There is no role of women in these types of ceremonies.

Some Korowai people started works which provided them little cash income. But this income was so-called. Such local inhabitants started work with tourist companies. They guided the tourists and serve them in every way. It means they can get both financial and materialistic benefits from their touring industry. These opportunities are on very limited scale for now. Local guides makes the tourists visit these villages and host them quite well. They also organize local “Sago” invitations for tourists, take their wares from one place to another and simultaneously show them traditional and ancient shows, which they perform themselves.

In the history of Korowai tribe, once for limited time (from around 1996 to 1999) anarchy prevails there. The basic reason was that the very precious wood (Agarwood) of this village, which is also called (gaharu) in the local language was started moving outside illegally. Actually the thing was that some outsiders or smugglers, who were aware of the value of this wood, started cutting the valuable wood of this jungle. Innocent Korowai people could not do anything against them and silently watched their valuable natural resource looting by looters. The value of this wood can be guessed by the fact that any buyer used to pay around 4 dollars for one kilogram of gaharu wood. Likewise this valuable “gaharu” wood reached the markets of Europe and Middle East, where one thousand dollars per kilogram of this valuable wood were also sought. The smuggling of this wood was also carried out by way of Southern shore “Agats” and also from “Jayapura” at the Northern shore. Help from missionary planes was also sought for this purpose which used to arrive and depart from “Yaniruma” and “Boma”. The control of “Gaharu” trading was under the army and army was running this business.

The valuable wood of Papua jungles was sent outside. Along with this loss, there was greater loss that the trading of “body selling” increased to greater extents, which played an important role in prevailing Aids in the whole Papua.

MARRIAGES

Here also like other civilized nations of the world, a parental system is established, in which father is the leader of the house and he runs the entire social, economical and political affairs. The polygamy tradition is also established in this tribe but normally they do not marry with the blood relations. Now they started preferring marriage with cousins from maternal side.

SOCIAL LIFE

Here the leadership structure based on ancient times i.e. any powerful person becomes the leader of the tribe with respect to his personal traits and capabilities. There is no role of any organization in this leadership. The fighting among tribes starts specifically due to disputes related to casting magical spells.

RELIGIOUS LIFE

The belief of Korowai tribe is that this whole universe is full of every type of spirits, in which some spirits are more special and harmonious to each other as compared to other spirits. Especially homage is paid to spirits of forefathers. According to Korowai tribe belief, the “Ginol Silamtena” is the spirit of the creator of this universe. But Korowai people neither give any importance to it in their daily lives nor do they accept that there is any role of it in their daily lives. It is essential for each and every person of Korowai tribe to arrange a special dinner once in his life time. According to their faith prosperity and growth occurs due to this dinner party.

In order to evade the difficult time these people altar the pet pig for their forefather’s spirits.

Korowai people are keepers of extraordinary and valuable customs, which includes their ghostly stories, folk tales, magical sayings and spells and ancient customs of natural feats.

In respect to death and life after death, Korowai people believe that in return of the acts of a person, he has to come again in this world. The people, who have gone from their tribes after death and now living in the world of spirits, any one of those spirits can sent his relative again in this world and that person will rebirth in the shape of any new born in their tribe.

COORDINATION WITH EUROPE

In the end of the 1970 decade, few Christian (Protestants Missionaries) started living with Korowai people. In the decade of 1980 an Indonesian human expert Dea Sudarman prepared many documentaries for Japanese Television.

In 1993 a film crew had arranged a research study in the “Dio Village”. The main theme of this study was “The houses made on trees and man-eating”. The Korowai people were presented negatively in this case study, which led to the creation of film “Lords of Garden”.

In 1996 a local Christian Community was established, which consists of members from the neighborhood tribe “Kombai”. For the long time it has been thought that Korowai people are fundamentalists in their beliefs and will never divert to any other religion and will resist against such efforts. Hence many people accepted Christianity in the end of 1990 decade and formally entered in this religion.

In the autumn of 2003 a small team of Bible Translators reached in Yaniruma and started their work.

In May 2006 a tour guide Paul Riffle led the crew team of Australian T.V. Show “60 Minutes” in order to prepare a special report on this tribe and their people. After few days of filming a man reached the crew team and claimed that his six year nephew “Wa-Wa” had been accused of becoming a sorcerer (Kakua). He was in great danger, since he could be killed and eaten. But the crew team of “60 Minutes” refused to help that person. But afterward Paul Riffle contacted his opponent “Seven Network”, who agreed to send a “Today Tonight” crew in order to take “Wa-Wa” out of this area.

But, before these people could reach this area, the Indonesian higher authorities deported all the officials from “Jayapura” on the issue of Visa.

MAN-EATING

One of the reports about Korowai people was received that they still eat human flesh. But human experts say that it does not happen now, since these people are in constant coordination with outer people and it is also revealed in the latest reports that false stories has been spread in order to proliferate tourism.

In 2006 a T.V. show “60 Minutes” claimed that when anybody is accused of becoming a sorcerer “Khakhua” in the Korowai society and on proving the crime he was beaten harshly, hanged and afterwards eaten. In this regard many uncertified claims were also made that the brain of a person is eaten immediately while the corpse is still hot and that pregnant women and children are not involved in this eating.

WAY OF CONTSTRUCTION

Korowai houses are made on height, for which higher wood pillars are fixed on the land initially. This way has been going on since past, in order to keep the houses safe from water and flood. Secondly these houses remain away from the reach of the invaders. This step is specifically taken for the safety of children and women; otherwise the conqueror tribe either makes women and children their slave or kills and eats them.

The thick, high and strong pillars of iron wood in one way keep the houses safe from fire too, otherwise the strategy of invader is to fire the houses made of wood, grass and straw, which compels the residents to come out of their houses due to smoke and suffocation and thus invaders arrest them. Iron wood is that hard and solid wood, which does not catch fire easily.

These people are living in the ancient past in spite of living in the present and are not ready to change themselves. But efforts are going on and it is hopeful that soon these people will change their present state by entering in the present.

Will you help a small village grow into a magnificent city, or raze it to the ground and loot the villagers?

Tired of mindlessly exploring the landscape and building houses and underground lairs? Notch’s new NPC Villages and the Testificates dont suffice? If you’re one of those people who agrees with me when I say the newly added NPC Villages are boring, then the Millenaire mod is for you!

Villages start out small and simple….

Villages are randomly generated around the map for you to find however, they are unlike normal NPC villages and have different NPCs who are tasked with different jobs. From harvesting to managing the village, to trading with you and building houses, each NPC has a role to play in the village. Trading with the village will increase your reputation with them and also help them to grow larger and expand.

..but can grow to be very large!

Chests spread out amongst the houses contain valuable resources that the villagers have gathered. They are however locked. Killing the all the villagers will unlock all the chests in the village. Be warned however, as all the villagers will start attacking you the minute one of their own is under attack! Also, killing villagers reduces your reputation with the village and its culture! Also, once an NPC dies by your hand it doesnt respawn! Other sources of damage like falling and lava will make the NPC respawn shortly afterwards.

A Hindi Village, one of the 4 cultures in Millenaire

Millenaire also features cultures! There are 4 cultures in Millenaire: Norman, Hindi, Mayan and Japanese! Each culture has their own unique items and archetecture. Once you reach a certain reputation level with a culture, you may build your own village of that culture’s type! Village construction is up to you, from placement to design to building type, the choice is yours to shape your very own village!

Quests, the most interesting feature in Millenaire

Some NPCs will readily give out quests to the player such as delivering an item or gathering items. Some quests may be much much more elaborate than that and therefore are much more difficult to complete (but have grand rewards)!

If you think you have what it takes to turn a small village into a thriving comunity then the Millenaire Mod is for you!

Unfortunately, the mod is not compatible for SMP. It is however compatible with SSP MC 1.0.0!

Download the Mod Here

Running a public server? Scraping to pay the server bills every month? Then how about some internet Moneyz to lighten your load!

Meal times are like feeding battalion, with the women of the family spending hours making dinner. A typical meal can see them plucking 30 chickens, peeling 132lb of spuds and boiling up 220lb of rice.

All the men of the family work as carpenters and Ziona says proudly: “We don’t want any help from the government.”

Ziona said I still look forward to marry if any woman want support.

My complaints about the modern world, and perhaps a solution...

Modern society is not ideal for humans. Not even close. See, on the surface it’s fantastic. Medical services available whenever you’re sick, plenty of jobs opportunities around you, you can own your own property, you can drive to Publix at any time.

It’s all nice but I’m not a huge fan. Way too much alienation. Without TV or internet keeping us “connected” the masses would have already rebelled.

You can call me a communist or a hippie and I would probably agree with you to some extent, because I believe the best kind of society is much smaller, and where everyone works together.

Keep in mind, this what humans did for most of their existence. Hunter gatherers, then agricultural tribes, this is what people did for thousands of years. The European whites came and fucked things up just like they always do and a few centuries later we go from hunting wild boars to paying 3 bucks at a hot dog stand.

Now someone says, “Hey I love, modern technology. The human race is evolving, not going backwards, you shmuck. You can go live in the jungle with caterpillars, I’m perfectly happy here texting my bff’s before we go to world of beer and try to pick up bitches.”

Okay, fine, my proposal is not to totally burn shit down, but to downsize. Drastically.

My ideal society is small. A little village, in the mountains if you will. Everyone knows each other and everyone’s equal. There’s no money in this society. Instead, everyone is trusted to take what they need and provide their contribution to the community. Everyone works hard by day, and at night we get together at the village square and socialize, dance, have spiritual ceremonies, have wild sex, drink, smoke weed, etc. Only about 100 people tops live in this village. Families live in small houses, and the houses are close together, no more of our suburban castles. Modern technology would still exist but it would all be greatly downsized. Power would be generated either from the sun, or turbines down the river. No oil or fossil fuels necessary.

One day I intend to develop a society like this. Hell stuff like this probably already exists, but I imagine it’s more of a slum like area than a healthy, vibrant village.

Now also keep in mind that this is ideal. This is assuming there won’t be those greedy motherfuckers who try to rule the village while oppressing the weak. This is assuming that people won’t steal, or murder, or take advantage of this very liberal community.

Unfortunately this village assumes the best of human nature, but unfortunately reality paints a picture of heirarchies, and rules, and politics, and other assorted bullshit. It’s funny how the system set up to prevent corruption from the masses is so corrupt in itself. Again, the dark side of human nature.

A little of the history of this quaint Welsh Village.

The village with the longest name in Wales. However I do believe there is one with an even longer name in New Zealand.

LLnafair pwll has been inhabited by people since the neothilic Period (4,000-2,000C).

Most of their economy in those days was Agriculture and until this lates century most of the estates would have been owned by farmers.

For example in 1844 almost 92% of the land there was owned by farmers.

I think we can safely say that most of the major changes came about as a result of the construction of thomas telford’s new road in the 1820s and also with the arrival of the railway crossing at brittannia bridge at that the beginning of the 1850s.

this in turn led to a development of a new part of the village (Pentre Isaf) Lower bridge.

As a result of this tradesmen moved into the area eg craftsmen, traders, and shopkeepers and Llanfairpwllbecame an important ciommercial centre serving agricultural acres Llanedwen and Penmynydd.

The period that came between 1850 and 1914 was a golden age in the economic history of this village.

Llanfair P.G. when translated to english means :-’The Mary church by the pool near the White Hazel’s ‘the village was renamed in the 19th century. Whyy was this?

The name Llanfairpwllgwyngylchgogerychwyrndrobwlllantysiliogogogoch, was actually inve ted by a cobbler from nearby Meani bridge,he had no idea at the timethat he had created one of the most successful tourist marketing plans of all times.

Because of this many tradesmen moed into this area they would have consisted of shopkeepers, craftsmen, traders and many more also.

Inbetween 1850 and 1914 there was the establishment of a Post Office,as well as six pubs, two schools,a brewery and a hotel.

however the period after qround 1918 did prove to be a very dificult time indeed.

When the soldiers returned from the war there were many problems facing themeg, emigration and unemplyment being two of these problems.

But coming nearer to the 1960s and 1970s the new illage began to take place.

there was indeed extensive buildings on sites, and the actual population un this village rose from 1,172 in 1061 to 3,101 in 1971

This quaint village to this day retains it’s village atmosphere ,even though there are nearly as many inhabitants there than in some small Welsh towns.

Child marriage, defined as marriage before age 18, devastates the lives of girls, their families and their communities. Widespread in many developing countries, child brides number more than 60 million worldwide. In some countries, half of the girls are married before they turn 18.

This harmful traditional practice of child marriage is most common in poor, rural communities, and its consequences only perpetuate the cycle of poverty. More often than not, child brides are pulled out of school, depriving them of an education and meaningful work. They suffer health risks associated with early sexual activity and childbearing, leading to high rates of maternal and child mortality as well as sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. And they are more likely to be victims of domestic violence, sexual abuse and social isolation.

Though child marriage is entrenched in tradition and culture, change is possible. Very often, girls and their parents want to delay marriage but lack options. Governments and communities are actively working to discourage the practice by raising awareness of the adverse consequences for girls, running programs that provide girls with viable alternatives to marriage, and demanding more effective enforcement of existing laws that condemn child marriage. With the right mix of effective programs, policies and political will, millions of girls will have the opportunity to fulfill their potential.

Every year on the 11th, 12th and 13th of September, a festival called "Fruit Corso (means Fruit Parade)" is held to celebrate the harvest of the Fruit of all the Villages in Tiel, Netherlands.
It includes a Parade of Cars which are decorated with Fruits. A Unique Event whereby Fruits, Vegetables and Seeds are used to make Beautiful Floats.

The Fruitcorso annually attracts the attention of more than 100.000 visitors

and is thereby one of Netherlands biggest events.

The Fruitcorso has, besides the improvement of the tourism in this area

a very important social and cultural function.

History

The godfathers of the Fruitcorso Tiel are Bernhard Bruggeman and Joop van Hesteren.

The first Fruitcorso took place in 1961 and nine villages in this region attended.

Soon it became a matter of honour for all the villages in the surrounding of Tiel to make a float as well.

They established Corso Associations and the designers tried really hard to make the best design.

Soon the Fruitcorso has developed itself to a big and unique event

by which the participants try to take the wind of each other’s sails.

Explanation Foundation 4-Stromenland

Foundation 4-stromenland is an organisation directed by volunteers with a relatively small board.

The different tasks are divided within the board.

It is clear that an event like the Fruitcorso cannot be organised by such a small group of people.

Therefore almost all board members have formed their own committee, who, under their responsibility, perform some tasks.

These tasks partly exist of executive activities but also of policy preparation activities which are mainly focussed on following the strategy on the medium term.

There are within the Foundation 4-Stromenland, apart from about 2.000 of floats builders, several dozens of volunteers active.

Goal

The statuary goal of the Foundation 4-Stromenland is the promotion of the tourism in the ‘Rivierengebied’ (river area) on non-profit base.

To achieve this goal, the Fruitcorso is organised annually. The Fruitcorso has, except for this formal goal, also an important social function. There is a major involvement of the floats builders.

The board has therefore decided to keep the amount of floats the same or preferably increase it. This is also to make sure that there will be enough volunteers to organise the Fruitcorso in the future.

To guarantee the commercial basis and the financial continuity of the Fruitcorso on the long term the number of corso teams must be kept the same and the aim is to attract more visitors.
