Water and electricity are two most spoken issues that people of Bangladesh have been dealing with. On the one hand Government is incapable of doing it, on the other will not let lose. Objectivity is the business, when government is a business enterprise, people have nowhere to hide from sufferings.

Water woes and listless Water Authority in Big cities in Bangladesh: A case of Dhaka WASA (Water and Sewerage Authority)

Collected by

Md. Rezaul Karim, Assistant Professor, Southern University Bangladesh

Continuing protests by residents of different areas across the capital Dhaka over the past few days against ‘insufficient supply of water’ deserve serious attention of the authorities concerned. According to a report of New Age on Friday, having experienced an acute crisis of water for around a week, residents of West Rampura and Ulun took to streets and put blockade on the Rampura-Baridhara road for about half an hour Thursday morning. Moreover, people living in other parts of the capital like Mirpur, Mohammadpur, Moghbazar, Shantinagar, Badda, Dhanmondi, Kalabagan, Gulshan, etc have also been reeling under acute water crisis for the past three to five days. Worryingly still, the managing director of Dhaka WASA, responsible for water supply in the capital, appears to have trivialized the problem by denying that the crisis is acute.

Against the demand of 250 crore liters of water, the Dhaka WASA has the capacity to produce about 220 liters a day through its 590 deep tube-wells and four water purification plants. However, there seems to be a big question about the actual quantity, not to mention the quality, of the water it produces every day. Although the Dhaka WASA seemingly wants to have the people believe that frequent power cuts that lead the pumps to remain inoperative for hours are behind the water crisis in question, there are some other factors relating to its own negligence which, in fact, have played an important role to turn the problem into a crisis. First of all, power outage problem is nothing new; it has rather become a regular phenomenon over the years. The Dhaka WASA should have enough number of generators or any other alternative means to continue operation of the pumps during load-shedding. Regrettably, however, the number of generators the DWASA currently owns falls way short of the actual requirement. According to the report, it has 233 permanent generators and 60 mobile generators while the number of pumps is 590. Second, the WASA pipelines in a significant number of areas have become rundown over the years causing leakage of huge quantity of water on the one hand and disruption in water supply to the relevant areas on the other. Worse, despite repeated protests on parts of the dwellers of the areas concerned, WASA has hardly taken any effective initiative to replace or repair those shabby pipelines. Yet, it has recently hiked its water tariff for the fourth time in the past two and a half years.

The government needs to take immediate actions to make the Dhaka WASA comply with the demands of the people of the areas in question to ensure adequate supply of water. It also needs to take the WASA top brass to task for its apparent failure in addressing the subscribers’ woes on time. Irony of fate is that if someone is interested to solve his or her own water problems thru’ deep well, it is illegal, reason is environmental affect – water layers will be falling down. But how the WASA is delivering! Again if you pay fees- legal! So, many draconian laws exist in the country only God knows what is to be done.

A very small effort from your side can bring great change to this world.

While going through the net I came across a very interesting finding by a Japanese scientist, Masaru Emoto. He found out that the crystal structure of water change according to the human behavior and emotions. A very weird and bizarre finding I would say.

In his finding he proved that the water becomes more crystallized when good things are said in front of water.

Now second most important thing which he observed, which actually makes this whole finding very important, is that with increase in crystalline structure, the energy of water increases. Also, its absorption in our body cells increases.

Now, if this thing is true. Then, the shortage of drinking water can be solved by thinking good things, whenever we are drinking water. It is very difficult to drink water in that way. But, then if we really want to save our precious resource then we have to do like this. Since this will help in reducing the water uptake per person. Hence, this will increase the amount of water available to us.

So, in this way probably we can prevent the water shortage in this world.

For more such interesting scientific paradoxical topics, refer following links:

1) Three Most Controversial Topics: There are three articles which have seen more controversy than expected. Find it all by yourself along with the reason.

2) Smoking is good for health, the title itself contradicts the notion which is being created in the minds of the people. So, this topic will attract controversy. However, you must read this article carefully to understand the paradox which smoking creates.

3) Why do Men Rape? , although I haven’t expected any controversy related to this topic but then it has been one of the most controversial topic in the most odd ways. Despite, the fact it tries to make a scientific and logical explanation of this question, this topic has viewed in a different sense.
