The Trevi Fountain is much more than just a fountain - a fantastic work of baroque art, regarded as a true jewel of water and stone, and a hugely popular tourist destination.

This unique fountain has origins date back to ancient Roman times, when it served as the terminal point of the aqueduct Aqua Virgo – which. translates as Virgins Water, deriving from an old Roman legend, which states that a young maiden told a group of Roman soldiers about the source of the water.

They told Emperor Augustus. who immediately ordered an aqueduct be built – 22 kilometer long – specifically lead the water to his thermal baths, scenes from this legend dominating the the upper level of the fountain in bas-relief. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the fountain fell into a ruinous state, out of action for almost a 1,000 years, before Pope Nicholas V in 1453 ordered its restoration, after which the name was changed to the Aqua Vergine aqueduct.

It was during this restoration that the Pope ensured the Roman custom of the endpoint of an aqueduct being a fountain was maintained, insisting that a small, simple basin be built as the terminal point. It was during the reign of Pope Urban VIII that the fountain was thought not dramatic enough, so that famous sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini was about to become involved when the Pope died and changes were put off.

Planning began again, 100 years later, for a new fountain on the site, under Roman architect Nicola Salvi. Inspired by the sketches left by Bernini, he took 30 years to finish the fountain before it stood completed in year 1762, becoming known then as the Trevi fountain, not only the largest Baroque fountain in Rome, but highly regarded as the most beautiful one in the old city.

Perhaps one of most striking features of this fountains is the fact that it stands a massive 25 m tall by 20 m wide, built in a small square that makes the size even more imposing to the onlooker. Theme of the fountain is both the taming of, and the power thundering water, tumbling over rocks and petrified vegetation, in what some call the greatest show you can ever look at it.

Dominated by a several large statues, central to the fountain is the Roman god of the water and the seas, Neptune – also known as Poseidon in Greek mythology – standing in a large shell chariot, pulled by two sea horses, one of which is calm and submissive, the other is impatient and restless, symbolizing the fluctuating moods of the oceans.

The horses are guided by tritons, mermaid-like creatures forming the marine divinities escort of Greek mythology, adding add symbolic meaning to the fountain – the contrast in mood and poses – as well as providing symmetrical balance.

Any visitor will see lots of coins, stemming from the tradition of throwing a coin into the fountain to ensured a future return to Rome, one modern slice of folklore saying that throwing two coins into the water leads to new romance, while three ensure either marriage or divorce. Sources estimate that 3,000 coins get thrown in daily, collected each morning and donated to charity. The Trevi Fountain is much more than just a fountain – a fantastic work of baroque art, regarded as a true jewel of water and stone, and a hugely popular tourist destination.

Superstitions and Old Wives Tales often sound suspiciously similar and, in fact, many of these sayings show up on both lists. It's fun to read about these things, and to see how many of them we've heard before.

By Joan Whetzel

Superstitions and Old Wives’Tales have been around since time immemorial. Superstitions are seen as beliefs with no logical or sound foundation and Old Wives’Tales, once based in truth, are now considered merely unproven, time-honored beliefs. Read on to find out if some of your beliefs might actually fall under the categories of Superstitions or Old Wives’ Tales. Following a description of each is a list of some of the more popular Superstitions and Old Wives’ Tales.

What Are Superstitions?

Some of the superstitions we hold are just for fun (e.g. an itchy palm means you’ll have luck or you have money coming your way) while others can be so deep-seated that they affect the way a person lives his or her life. For example, the superstition that if a person doesn’t get out of the bed on the same side he or she got in on, they will suffer bad luck, could lead to a compulsive need to always get into and out of bed on the same side. Why tempt fate?

Superstition can be defined as a belief in supernatural or mystical causes for certain events or occurrences. In other words, certain things happen (good luck or bad luck) because of some uncanny, unexplainable, magical intervention, events or occurrences that could be described as nothing short of miraculous because there was no other way of explaining them. During the “Age of Enlightenment in the 1700s, Christian doctrine scorned belief in miracles, reducing them to superstitions and equating belief in miracles with belief in magic, which was considered sinful. In fact the Catechism of the Catholic Church deems superstition to sinful because it demonstrates a lack of faith in Divine Providence, which breaks the First Commandment.

While some superstitions may be suggest or represent religious practices (Voodoo for instance), most apply to views and customs about good or bad luck, the prophesying on the prospects of things that will happen based on previous events that are totally unconnected, and to spiritual beings.

What Are Old Wives Tales?

In the olden days, way before modern technology and modern medicine evolved into what it is today, women were the keepers of medical wisdom which was passed on from generation to generation. Women – especially the Old Wives who were the town’s mothers, grandmothers, midwives and healers – were responsible for delivering babies, healing sick family members and neighbors, were considered experts in nutrition, experts in children, folk medicine, herbs and even death.

Many of the Old Wives’ Tales developed from the wealth of their experience. Some of the Old Wives’ Tales, though were based in superstition, such as the Tale that eating bread crusts would make your hair curly. Many Old Wives’Tales developed from folk cures for every day ailments (toothaches, colds), or were aimed at teaching about things like deathand natural life changes (explaining pregnancy to kids, beginning of menstruation, or menopause), or to teach children about which behaviors to avoid by associating those behaviors with dire consequences (if you touch a toad you’ll get warts).

Whole books could be written about the Old Wives’ Tales concerning pregnancy (e.g. if you carry the baby high it’s a girl, but if you carry it low it’s a boy). There are way too many pregnancy related Old Wives’ Tales to go into here, but some of the other aspects of life still offer up some really intriguing examples. When reading through this list, you may discover that many of these Old Wives’ Tales sound suspiciously like superstitions.

A very happy new year

Hello friends, another end of the year is here again, on the other hand, this is beginning of a new era. I do remember the end of the year 2010; I was here with you and enjoying the same. This year is almost gone now and shall be, forgotten soon. Oh, that is so natural, we never remember the goners, but some things and people do not fall in that category. They always remain with you.

I am so sad when I do not see some of my good friends around, I know they are active and doing fine, but not with us on this site. I think this place does not make them feel comfortable here and they find some other places more attractive. I too thought the same for some time and was away, this site is so addictive that I could not resist but come back to enjoy your company.

As I see some of the friends doing well here and enjoying, I miss them all the more who were here and we were having all the fun. However, let us look forward and to the positive part of the story as this is natural, some go and some others join.

We can see some wonderful people have come and joined us, I am sure they will give us a good company and will try to fill the place.

In the last, I wish you all my best wishes for the year 2012.

May the blessings of God be, showered on you and your loved ones.

Wishing you and your family a very happy and prosperous new year.

Thank you all, for a being so cooperative and wonderful.

Songs that touch our hearts and make us think about the true meaning of Christmas.

Are there any Christmas songs that make you cry,or contemplate the true meaning of the season? Well for me there are many, not about toys or Santa, but the spirit of the Christmas holiday. Here are a few to hopefully make you a bit more open to the holiday spirit.

This one comes on the radio and I cry every time.

To remind us the joy of Christmas changes as we grow and to always hold on to the joy we feel.

I believe in Santa(in spirit anyway) and this is exactly what I would wish for.

Did HIS mother have a clue what her baby would come to mean to the world?

An old school Reminder of what the Christmas season is really a celebration of.

The way I wish it could be.

What I wish for all of us for the season

And I know this isn’t a religious song but it is based on a real cease fire on Christmas eve between Allied and German troops (snoopy wasn’t really there). And it’s just plain fun!!!!

HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL OF MY READERS,I HOPE THIS WARMS YOUR HEART.

Every December people are scared to greet each other, the reins of political correctness have frightened people from exchanging positive wishes. Don't yell at me if I say Happy Holidays.

I was inspired to write this by my good friend Karen Gross and her article “I want to wish you a Merry Christmas”, in which she asks if people are offended by her wishing them a Merry Christmas. Indeed many people are offended, it is not “Politically correct” to force religion down somebody else’s throat, but is wishing somebody a Merry Christmas actually forcing anything down another’s throat?

Now I do want to mention that while Karen is a Christian, I am not, while Karen celebrates Christmas as the birth of Jesus, I do not. I do not celebrate Christmas for the same reason as Karen but this does not mean that I have to be cruel to her and insult her reasons for celebrating. And before you ask… I do celebrate “Christmas” with the same traditions that predate Christianity – the tree, the gifts, and so forth, I just do not associate it with the birth of Jesus. If somebody wishes me a Merry Christmas, I thank them, why would I mad or insulted?

But not too many years ago I was yelled at while working in a retail store, I said “Happy Holidays” to a lady customer and she freaked out, you would have thought I charged her too much for her purchases. What is so wrong with saying Happy Holidays? It’s not like I said “Happy Saturnalia“* or called her ugly.

Just because a person is not the same religion as you should not be any reason you cannot send them greetings?

Image by The U.S. Army via Flickr

Why cant we wish happy Diwali to East Indians and others that celebrate it? I did earlier this year after eating at an East Indian restaurant. I also wished Eid Mubarak to my internet Muslim friends earlier this year – and why not? I would wish people happy Kwanzaa too if I knew anyone that celebrated it.

Just because we do not share the same religion does not mean we should be so ignorant to bash somebody for offering us good wishes.

I still wonder why that lady was so cruel to me on that day when all I did was wish her happy holidays? Perhaps she is happier off being miserable.

*Saturnalia is one of the ancient December 25 holidays that predated Christianity, in which trees were decorated, gifts were exchanged, and the ancient pagans welcomed back the return to the sun in the sky, and celebrated the virgin birth of the sun God.

If you have opinions, ideas, or knowledge, and would like to get Paid for sharing them by writing for sites like this, Click Here.

Santa has a traditional Christmas eve tradition which many families around the world join in each year. They are known as ‘The Seven Secret Sacred Blessings and Wishes for the Seven Continents for World Peace”.

For Santa, these are the most sacred moments before he takes off on his annual world mid-night gift giving journey. So each Christmas eve way up high amongst the stars Santa Claus in his sleigh has seven minutes of sacred blessings and wishes he bestows upon the earth at seven minutes to mid-night. It is a time of silence for all the reindeer as they blow energy into the wishes and blessings at the exact moment they are spoken by Santa Claus.

Santa invites families and people from all around the world to join him in these sacred moments by saying the following blessing and wish for each nation at the exact time of 7 minutes to mid-night each Christmas Eve. Santa always ends each nations blessing and wish by blowing energy with a kiss into the blessings. Here they are exactly as they are said:

Africa
Santa’s Blessing & Wish for this Nation:
“Great wishes are scattered beneath this starry sky to all our brothers and sisters on this eve of the birth of new beginnings. These seeds of hope, great dreams for unity, peace and freedom are too the seeds of remembrance to live in gratitude, to embrace together in peace, love, forgiveness and acceptance. The seeds to move the human race forward and connect all people hand in hand together as one!

A birthday wish can hold so much sentiment and it can also be the churned out and processed leaving you among the crowd of the other birthday wishes with no significance. So for that special person I’ve compiled a list of original and unoriginal wishes you can mold together to make the ultimately sentimental birthday wish.

The old saying is it’s the thought that counts, and to be fully honest the thing to remember is that it is the thought that counts. Why do people always smile when they get a terribly drawn photo from a child? It’s because it’s filled with sentimental value and general intent to please the reciever. So if your birthday message is filled with a bag of love you can’t go wrong (within reason).

Thanks for reading

                 Royal Facination (Part 2)

I remember even as child, I came across some very old books that belonged to my dad, about Royals, I was totally fascinated. A dreamer from the beginning, I was spellbound, those beautiful pictures, even the black and white ones, those jewels, the gold, the Tiaras, and Royal Crowns, scepters, the palaces, their beautiful furnishings. It was awesome.

How I longed to be a royal. I wonder if that’s how most little girls feel.

One would think, after all those years of watching them over and over again I’d have had my fill of them, but no, not me, the look of Princess Diana, in those beautiful gowns always seems to take my breath away, especially those pictures of her, taken during those first ten years or so of her marriage to the Prince Charles.

Yes I know, many won’t agree with me, but truly, that’s the way I feel I only enjoyed her pictures during those first years after her wedding, I’m not sure what it was, the innocent look, the hair….. I think it was the hair; I didn’t enjoy her pictures too much after she cut them shorter. I guess she seemed more feminine to me with the longer look. Too short, well that sort of looks masculine to me.

Anyway, back to the main topic. During that first decade or so after Diana’s marriage, I was fully engrossed in the royals, seeking their pictures, putting them up in my room, talking about them all the time.

Prince Andrew got married during those years too, and then I had an added interest in the royals, Sarah Ferguson, wow, some wedding that was. Andrew and Sarah, her dress was simply gorgeous, both looked so happy together, the easy going, friendly attitude, the fun. Yes that is one wedding I can never forget, I thought it was lovely absolutely perfect.I truly believe there was no other royal wedding like that till Prince Albert’s this year with Charlene.

But then, all the scandals and everything, not to mention the ones already going on about Prince Charles and Diana. I didn’t want to believe in any of those, so I never bothered to read about them. I only wanted to enjoy the beautiful pictures and my own little dream world where I would be princess some day, just like the Princess I had most admired, ever!
