More people are struggling these days even in major counties like the US and UK. While we may have a benefit system to support those who are unemployed and struggling to find work its sometimes not enough.

People are finding themselves having to go to extreme measures to bring in some extra income, others are using it as an alternative because they don’t want to be on welfare. People are turning to the sex industry to make ends meet.

That doesn’t mean straight up prostitution but that doesn’t stop it from making people uncomfortable and ashamed of what they do. Eventually some people learn to enjoy what they do and/or become addicted to the money.

What about testing sex toys for a living and getting paid to review them? This option has been more popular of late and doesn’t require you to meet anyone or talk dirty down the phone to horny men.

While I wouldn’t want to take up any of these jobs myself but I can understand the appeal. Sex sells after all, but personally I wouldn’t want to add escort to my CV under job history. I don’t think anyone else would either, but some people just have no choice.

What did you do?

What should you do once you have finished school? continue your education or head straight out to work? While their is no clear answer I think most people would benefit from going straight out to work once they have finished their GCSE’s.

The reason? Nowadays employers value experience more than qualifications, you can be train on the job for a lot of things. And if todays statics are anything to go by you will probably be earning more than most of those who went to university.

For some university is still worth while but with the rising fees its not as appealing anymore and it may not even been worth going, once again university is for the rich. But thats just my opinion, what do other people think. For me I would go back and not bother with college I feel its made me worse off.

“ It depends on your major.”

“ in my opinion it is better to get a higher education as you are (usually) more likely to get a job with a higher qualification.”

“ Depends on your goals. A lot of people go straight to a four year, getting it done, all while working a part time. Then there are those that have no intentions on going. They are usually the ones that work right away. A few take a break and then go. It all depends on what you want to do.”

“ It depends on what you want further down in life. Do you have some plan for what you intend to overall with your life. Investing time in educating yourself is good and will give you advantage over the others, however if you go to college for the purpose to avoid working a job – that’s silly. You only need education for the reason of achieving some bigger purpose. On the other hand you can get self educated via books, courses, internet ,etc. (again it is for fulfilling a bigger goal that you might have) .

Getting a temporary job also might prove helpful (if you never had a job). You will learn new things, some real things from the real life and get some experience. However be careful not to get stuck with a job you dislike.

Smart people don’t work just for the money. More likely they work to learn and gain experience which they can implement further in life for achieving a desired goal. So yea.. it seems like it boils down to having a clear goal.”

A very ambitious student gets caught up in the recession; four years after graduating from university he finds himself with debts of $60,000.

As a child, each and every one of us has dreams of becoming a doctor, engineer, teacher or even president of a country. As the time passes by and we grow up, some of us are lucky enough to fulfil those dreams, while others remain behind closed doors and not able to achieve any of their dreams. Let’s imagine for a few minutes, what happens to those of us who are ambitious and have not been able to achieve their goal? Despite the fact they have devoted their whole life to the purpose of achieving one goal.
Let’s take the example of someone I have known for a very long time; he wants to remain anonymous. Ever since, I have known him, he has been a very ambitious and hard-working person. As a child he wanted to work in the media industry as a PR Executive and it was the only job he wanted. He was a good student at school, with an excellent character.
He wasn’t the brightest student in the class, but was average, yet very ambitious and diligent. As we grew up together, he successfully graduated from High School with good grades and proceeded to go to college. After graduating from college, he went to university to study a degree course to follow his dream. While studying full time he was working part time in order to cover his expenses. In addition, he attended unpaid work placements with major PR companies, which would be useful for him to secure a job once he graduated from university.
He graduated from university with a Merit grade, which he didn’t expect. He was shocked and disappointed with the grades because the low grade meant that it might jeopardise his long term goal to become a PR Executive. But he remained hopeful that he could start a career somewhere in PR industry.
After sending thousands of applications and resumes for two years, he didn’t find work in the media industry, so he decided to apply for jobs in the banking sector, as he had previously worked as a part time customer sales person. But it seemed he was running out of luck, as he could not find a full time job in the banking sector.
When he graduated, it was the start of the recession, which made it even more difficult for him to get a job in any sector. Like thousands of other graduates he was also the victim of the recession. After two years of searching for a full time job in all sectors, he was still jobless, although he worked as a part time customer service representative, which wasn’t his ideal job.
During this period, he had been borrowing money from credit cards and banks as he used to hold an excellent credit scoring. But he was unaware that he had borrowed too much. Four years later, he was still working as a part time customer service representative for a company, and he was only earning just enough to cover his rent. He was really worried about his health when he realised that he had borrowed $60,000, which he could not pay back any time soon.
His only hope was to buy lottery tickets, if he could win a lottery to pay back his loans. Although he didn’t consider himself lucky enough to win a lottery, he remained optimistic. Buying lottery tickets was giving him hope rather than anything else.
I had no idea that a degree course would cost you so much. If he had not followed his dream to study, he would not have been at the same position as he is now. Education is supposed to make your life better, not worse, but I have come across several people who have been left without hope after earning their degrees.
There is a question in my mind, after all those years: was it worth dreaming, spending most of your time and money in education?

Any Policy wonks out there? Final process of a 20 page paper.

Ok, first let me say that I have put a lot of time and effort into this paper, and several articles ago, I submitted the first two parts of this 20 page research papper I am doing.

The paper is about Poverty. In section one, I defined poverty and led into section two which covered minimum wage laws. Minuimun wage led into section 3, the ideas of a living wage to decrease the gaps between the rich and poor.

Now, I am feeling stuck at section 4. Here is what I need: this section needs to be about 4 pages of double spaced print. Everything must be cited MLA format Following are the guidelines:

Who is responsible for implementing this policy/program change for a living wage. I am thinking federal and state)

o Is this a National, State or Local change?

o Will this be implemented by Government entities (i.e. DHHS, OCFS, etc.) or Non-Governmental ( I am thinking govermental, with business grants as well as Community Action Agencies, local service agencies)

o How will funds be distributed? (block grants, competitive grants, through existing departmental budgets)

Will your change be implemented as a permanent or pilot project? Will it be short term in duration or a long term change? (I am thinking long term, with studies and data collection every 3 to 5 yrs)

o Consider whether your change is retroactive or could have a grandfather clause attached. Who will oversee project/program changes ( to ensure that the changes are actually made, I am thinking IRS and better business beareus)? The persons implementing it, a government agency, or a third party entity? ( not retroactive, a forward date)

Establish a clear evaluation strategy: How will you determine whether your changes have been successful? ( I am thinking research and data collection)

o What are the intended outcomes and how will you know if they have been met? How do you define success? (intentions are to lesson poverty, would define success by cost of living standards and levels of poverty)

o Who will evaluate this (the entities responsible for implementation or oversight or an independent third party would be IRS, better business, local agenices,)

Consequences: Present some potential long or short term intended and unintended consequences of this change? long term may cause more poverty by increasing inflation

so if there is someone here on triond that is up for helping a college student gather referenced information, please help and dont forget the reference links. Truly I would appreciate this help.

Each Article Is A Worker.

We strive to write many articles and some of us even get our content up to thousands of articles and the reason we do this is because most of the time the more articles that we have the more money that we make. This is because each article you have is a worker just like if you had an actual company with employees. All of your employees do work and in return this work this work earns you money, just like with articles, each article you write generates traffic and this traffic generates money just like workers do.

This is why it is very important to work quality articles poorly written articles are like incompetent workers. If you have a good working and is well rounded and fill with common sense then he would be competent in his work to get it done efficient and fast. But if you work to hire just anyone, let say someone who was lazy and don’t really pay much attention to his just, this would cause you a lot of problems and possibly even money. Same with your articles if you just write them any how and poorly then they are going to work poorly and generate poor traffic and income.

Treat each article like a worker and build up a strong work force of good workers, remember you are responsible for how well your articles work for you as you are the one creating the content. If you were to view your writing and articles like this from now on you would understand why you need to put your best into creating them. Remember you would not want a lazy work force so make sure you donnt write your articles poorly and lazy other wise they will produce the same results as of that.

Do you envy those who go to work every day truly cheerful and eager? You can be that happy, too. Just land a job at Nordstrom, GlaxoSmithKline or FedEx.

Of course you’re not guaranteed to be satisfied at these places—but the odds are in your favor. These are three of the happiest companies for young professionals, according to career website CareerBliss.com.

CareerBliss compiled a list of the 10 companies where young employees are happiest, based on analysis from more than 223,500 employee-generated reviews between March 2011 and March 2012.

“As college graduates make the transition from academic to work-life, the transition can be scary and intimidating,” says Heidi Golledge, chief executive of CareerBliss. “Knowing which companies have ranked well with recent graduates can help others identify what companies might be best for their new career path.”

Young professionals, defined by CareerBliss as employees with less than 10 years’ experience in a full-time position, were asked to rate the company they work for, in terms of happiness, on a five-point scale.

GE Energy, a division of General Electric, leads the pack as the happiest company for young professionals. Headquartered in Atlanta, Ga., the firm has over 100,000 employees in more than 100 countries. It earned an index score of 4.528.

“I believe strongly that people want to work at GE Energy because being here means working with highly motivated, highly talented colleagues–and that brings out the best work in each of us,” says Sharon Daley, vice president of Human Resources there. “From next generation wind turbines, solar panels, engines that run on biogas, smart grids and the latest subsea oil and gas technologies, GE Energy employees are working on things that matter to the world.”

Why are young employees at that company so contented? “With GE Energy one of the largest parts of GE, our employees know they are working at a company that has the size and scale to change things,” Daley says. “At the same time, we run the business as if we were a small company or a start-up. That means that young professionals joining GE Energy have high levels of responsibility early. They are actively encouraged to think and act like entrepreneurs. And they are out there talking to customers and working to understand and anticipate their technology needs. That mix of freedom and accountability means our employees can see the effect their efforts are having immediately. Each person sees that they are making an impact – and that’s rewarding. So, yes, there is a lot to be happy about when we walk into work each day.”

No. 2 Nordstrom, the Seattle-based upscale department store, earned an overall index score of 4.441. “We are humbled to hear that our employees think we offer them a great workplace,” says Tara Darrow, a Nordstrom spokesperson. “We have a great group of hard-working, talented and diverse employees and we appreciate that they’ve recognized us in this way.”

Darrow says Nordstrom believes in empowering its employees and creating a competitive environment. “We want our people to have the ability to solve problems and be heroes to their customers, and we want them to treat the business as if their name were on the front door,” she says. “We spend a lot of time listening, but we also strongly believe in taking action. Our success is dependent on bringing each person’s thoughts, ideas, suggestions and perceptions to the table, and we value that collaboration. And we believe in recognizing success. We encourage fun and camaraderie, and we have a longstanding tradition of recognizing hard work and strong performance. This culture of empowerment, respect and competition creates an environment that our employees thrive in. Everyone enjoys being part of a winning team, and the company’s recent performance can certainly be attributed in large part to the contributions of our people.”

Fluor, United Space Alliance and AstraZeneca round out the top five.

“What we see for young professionals is a desire to find a company culture that fits with their personal work-style,” says CareerBliss’ chief technology officer, Matt Miller. “They want a company that values their ideas and provides the growth opportunities and leadership to help shape their career.”

Here are the happiest companies for young professionals:

No. 1: GE Energy
Average Score: 4.529

No. 2: Nordstrom
Average Score: 4.442

No. 3: Fluor
Average Score: 4.419

No. 4: United Space Alliance
Average Score: 4.393

No. 5: AstraZeneca
Average Score:4.391

No. 6: Centex
Average Score: 4.342

No. 7: GlaxoSmithKline
Average Score: 4.322

No. 8: Wipro
Average Score: 4.313

No. 9: FedEx Express
Average Score:4.304

No. 10: Kaiser Permanente
Average Score: 4.301

In fact, sometimes, just by relying on hard work alone without the supporting factors which add to the ingenuity instead will lead to failure. Ingenuity is what I mean here is how the energy and cost as little as possible but the results obtained can be maximized.

Harland, the inventor of Kentucky Fried Chicken Recipe Sylvester Stallone:

In business life, we are required to work hard to achieve goals. But hard work alone is not sufficient for success. In fact, sometimes, just by relying on hard work alone without the supporting factors which add to the ingenuity instead will lead to failure. Ingenuity is what I mean here is how the energy and cost as little as possible but the results obtained can be maximized. Not just rely on muscle alone but practical thinking is required to perform this way.

I once heard a story of a Chinese businessman on the story of this ingenious work. He said at the time the product has a small stick-shaped lamp. He was determined to be able to sell thousands of products are in a very short and very low cost. Because the product-shaped lights and small and only lasts a few days, he concluded that the product will sell well if it is sold at the concerts or events conducted at night.

With a very low cost, and profits are not large in every time a sale is not possible he should rent a place to peddle his wares in the concert area. It could cost will break even or even lose if you must rent a booth. Finally he gets the idea of utilizing the hawkers and street children to sell the products to the system of commission percentage of every successful product sale.

The first advantage, the sellers are hawkers and street children were not required to pay the ticket when entering the concert area. Automatically operating costs to get in and mingle with visitors to the concert is zero. The second advantage, he does not have to pay people as a marketer and he does not need to bother to sell its own products. Finally, in just a few hours he managed to sell thousands of products with very low operating costs. Hopefully this story helpful.

Success for you …..

We have to have greed! and yet we look each other

and say that we love one another.

You say that but that’s a lie!

If we loved each other there

wouldn’t be the need for war, there wouldn’t be a need to die.

There wouldn’t be a need for greed…… or a need to cry.

I look to the sky and i see the hatred.

And all the love that we say we have for each other is just wasted.

Wasted away like a wealthy family’s food.

Wasted like the fruit of our soul.

Wasted like our lives in war.

I look to the sky and i see the violence,

I smell the burning of peoples skin

I hear the screams of men and women of war

And what for? To say that we are going to win.

One day we will all be able to soar.

Soar through the high heights of happiness.

Soar through the problems in our lives.

Soar through the lives we want to live.

But to get there… We must all,

Look to the sky!

This is a part in a series of articles related poverty. First, we will look at poverty, then minimum wage(Does it work or not?, if not how can we fix it?) and I hope to incorrporate some thoughts from the readers (with permission and reference, of course).

Identifying the working poor depends on how poverty and work is defined. For poverty, two of the most accepted definitions world-wide are from United Nations and the World Bank. The United Nations states that:

“Fundamentally, poverty is a denial of choices and opportunities, a violation of human dignity. It means lack of basic capacity to participate effectively in society. It means not having enough to feed and cloth a family, not having a school or clinic to go to, not having the land on which to grow one’s food or a job to earn one’s living, not having access to credit. It means insecurity, powerlessness and exclusion of individuals, households and communities. It means susceptibility to violence, and it often implies living on marginal or fragile environments, without access to clean water or sanitation“( United Nations, David Gordon)

The United Nations measures poverty through a set of operational definitions on the scale and magnitude of each dimension included in the definition. A similar, multi-dimensional definition that is also widely used is from the World Bank.

“Poverty is pronounced deprivation in well-being, and comprises many dimensions. It includes low incomes and the inability to acquire the basic goods and services necessary for survival with dignity. Poverty also encompasses low levels of health and education, poor access to clean water and sanitation, inadequate physical security, lack of voice, and insufficient capacity and opportunity to better one’s life.” (World Bank)

Income is a key measure and a widely used reference for the measures of poverty and poverty thresholds. (HHS) Poverty status is defined at household level where households that live on less than $1.25 a day are considered to be poor. Work or employment, on the other hand, may be defined differently across geographies or institutions. As a gold standard, the definition of employment as set out by the International Conference of Labour Statisticians (ICLS) is used to determine the reliability of surveys that identify the working poor.

Estimates show that there are 1.4 billion people living in poverty within developing countries.(Ravallion & Chen). Intuitively, employment, which should provide a means of living, should guarantee an individual out of poverty. It should be those inactive in the economy or unemployed who should be living in poverty. Excemptions to the minimum wage and exploitation of immigrant and seasonal labor is an example of the working poor. Aproximately 1 in 4 workers live near or at the poverty threshold. Most of the working poor hold service type jobs such as child care workers and janitors. ( Karger & Stoesz).

Among 53 countries on which there is available data, 60.4% of those who live below the poverty line and are 15 years old or older are actually employed. The notion here is that it is not unemployment that causes poverty but the other way around. Poverty causes employment because those who are poor cannot afford to be unemployed. (ILO).

In the United sates, there are two federal measurements of poverty, the poverty threshold and the poverty guideline. The poverty threshold is generally used for statistical purposes while the poverty guideline is used for determining eligibility requirements for federally funded programs offered to the poor( Karger & Stoesz). These governemental measurements of poverty are known as the absolute approach.

The private sector also measures poverty, this approach is known as the Relative approach. Relative poverty looks at average wages in a community, the standard of living wages (what do most people have?). The relative approach suggests that if a person/family does not have what others in the community have, then they are relatively poor and in need of assistance.

Another approach to viewing poverty is the basic needs approach. This approach looks at the basic needs such as clean water, education, shelter and health care. In America, the majority of people have these basic needs met, therfor, Americans, genrally, are not poor. This makes a widespread assumption and contributes to growing rate of relative poverty.
