The United States has had copyright laws since 1790. In 1978 a new copyright law went into effect. Under it, the creator of a work can obtain a copyright without waiting for the work to be published. In most cases the copyright continues for 50 years after the creator’s death. If the work was commissioned by an employer, the employer may hold the copyright. Such a copyright lasts for 75 years from the date of publication or for 100 years from the date of creation, whichever is shorter.

Permission to use a copyrighted work is usually granted on payment of a fee. Every time a disc jockey plays a song on the radio, the authors of the words and music must be paid. When a play is performed, the producer must pay the playwright. Authors of books receive payments for all copies of books that are sold. These payments are called royalties.

Using copyrighted material without permission is a form of stealing. The owner of the copyright can sue someone who does this. But there are exceptions to the law. Films and plays may be presented for educational purposes if tickets are not sold. Teachers may make a few copies of a work for class use, but whole books may not be copied in this way.

The laws of one country do not protect authors if their work is used in other countries. Two treaties provide such protection. They are the Berne Convention of 1886 and the Universal Copyright Convention of 1952.

Copyrighted material available over the Internet and in other digital forms is particularly vulnerable to theft. Laws such as the United State’s Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 regulate how such material can be used.

The symbol © or the word “copyright” appears on all copies of a copyrighted work. In a book this notice is usually on the back of the title page. On the Internet, it is usually at the bottom of each Web page.

Work permit is issued for one or two years renewable for the same period of validity with the approval of the employer and the worker for renewal. In this case, the work permit should immediately be renewed upon expiry – if the employer fails to renew the work permit and the resident permit, the applicable penalties to those who violate the laws of residence and labor shall be imposed on that employer. Whereas the worker is the one aggrieved for not renewing such permit, he/she shall ask the employer to renew the work permit and the resident permit as long as the work relation remained on going. If the employer did not respond to that, the worker should report this to the concerned labor office to make the proper procedures towards the employer.

All workers should carry with them the work permit and the resident permit whenever they travel within the kingdom, and they should present permits to officials from related governmental agencies, such as Labor Offices and the Directorate for Passport. The Ministry of Labor issues the work permit according to certain conditions. As for the worker, the following conditions must be met:

• Worker entry to the Kingdom must be legal.
• Worker should be contracted with a Saudi employer or with an authorized non-Saudi employer under the Investment Law.
• Worker should have occupational ability or hold educational qualifications required by the state.
• Worker should hold a valid passport for at least six months.
• Worker should physically fit and not suffering from any diseases.

While the resident permit is issued by the Directorate General for Passport located all over the Kingdom’s regions according to specified conditions mentioned above.

How important is Work Contract? According to the Ministry of Labor, the worker should know and understand what is written on his Work Contract such as:

1. The work contract is a contract signed by both of the employer and the worker, where the latter is obligated by this contract to work under the management and supervision of the employer in turn for a wage. It also includes the terms of work agreed upon between both parties.
2. Before arriving in the Kingdom, the worker should have obtained a work contract signed by the worker and the employer or a representative with whom the worker will work. This contract should be written in Arabic language. It may be written in another language in addition to Arabic, knowing that the Arabic version is the one that will be considered. There must be no other contracts signed.
3. The worker should obtained his/her copy of the contract and should hold on to it during the work period in the Kingdom.
4. The work contract should state the date of signing and the date of commencement. The location and period of work should also be specified in case the contract is time-limited. Additionally, the wage and allowances must be mentioned in the contract as well as the worker occupation.

The worker shall be under a probational period for three months as of the date of starting work. The worker should not be subjected to a probational period more than once with any employer. It must be stated in the contract, clearly and in writing, that the worker will be subjected to a period of probation. Also the period must be clearly specified.

It is advised to migrant workers to fully understand what is stated on his/her work contract – to avoid from being abused! Bear me with part three about Working Hours and Vacations.

Children are considered to be God’s reflections. Their innocence and purity of thought can touch everyone’s heart alike. However, child labour has surfaced as a major problem in India. It is indeed a shame for a civil society to make its children do manual labour. Child labour is a worm that is slowly eating up the lives of thousands of children across the world. It is difficult to imagine how small children can be forced to carry load or work in stalls or factories. It is as if have lost all sense of compassion and propriety. Poor people, especially those who lack adequate resources to feed their children, make their children work in small factories, restaurants, hotels houses etc. in order to support the household. These children do all sorts of menial work and are greatly exploited by their employers.

Most of the children who are forced to do manual labour are deprived of their basic right to education. If they were provided education in the first place, then they would not have landed in the gruesome world of child labour. The Indian Constitution provides for abolition of child labour in any form. The Indian Parliament passed the Child Labour (Prohibition and Abolition) Act in 1986 to the same effect. Recently, an amendment to the same act declared the engaging of children below 14 years of age in any sort of occupation as illegal. However, no amount of legislation can do away with this evil until and unless people are sensitized about this issue. Parents who send their children to work must be discouraged from doing so. Poor children must be provided with free education and food so that they can work towards a better life. All those who employ children must be brought to the book. The issue of child labour needs sensitive handling as it pertains to the future of India.

Now, due to changes in times, modernization and high education, the modern woman has found a place in society. She is now recognized and considered in discussions and decision-making. More and more women are now able to move freely on the social ladder above the ranks to attain leadership positions in various institutions with some becoming members of parliament, government ministers, C.E.Os and even presidents.

This is a positive achievement for women across the world yet a great challenge for women. This is because, the modern woman would now have to combine responsibilities of handling home or family affairs which include raising her children, supporting the husband in one way or another, catering for the family and her professional career.

This may be quiet stressful and may seem impossible to do but with examples of great recognizable women like the Queen of England, Queen Elizabeth, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, president of Liberia, Mrs. Dilma Rousseff, president of Brazil, Mrs. Joyce Adeline Bamford Addo, speaker of parliament in Ghana and many others.

The modern woman is worth celebrating considering her achievements and her works handling her family and helping society.

Though women are rising higher, structures should be created to enable more women rise in society to refute the notion that a woman’s place is limited to home affairs.

Involved in chaos of this contemporary we are living, in dreams and real life we tend, to rid of -at any time magically- whole oppressive things. We created since the distant past -talking in human life’s terms- the fervent neediness for a dream beyond, picturesque, full, vast, extremely satisfactory, perfect, no doubts nor stifling troubles, neither sorrows nor physical or mental exhaustion (even for somebody, spiritual).

The good new, is we know whole of these experiences and great virtues not because watching fiction movies, but because daily we find that these activities encourage us, our own pleasure. Whatever. And the best part, the big majority cannot experiment like us.

We mean, we have become accustomed to thinking in jobs, studies, activities (specially in intellectual activities) like was created to give pain and nuisances of all kinds. We need as species, as living beings, as a complex set and too wide, we need be near, more here not “more there”, more on the Earth, on the reality. It call us shouting to living here, to enjoy here from it, within all these same sensations and emotions we only believe (in fact, would have us believe) that exists only in the afterlife, beyond. Fun, entertainment, all kind of pleasures, fullness, satisfaction.. finally, an interminable terrain at happiness could be explored without necessity to recourse from dangerous rituals or yearn a reencarnation.
